The original truck opened in 2010 in Mid-City by Oaxacan brothers Raul and Mario Martínez, and the eye-catching trompos al pastor were an immediate hit. Countless imitators have popped up, but Leo's remains LA's most recognizable al pastor purveyor. Now, the fleet has expanded to over a dozen loncheras (including one in San Francisco), and Leo's continues to receive recognition aplenty from Time Out magazine to Taco Chronicles on Netflix. I visited the Silverlake location at the northmost end of Hollywood Blvd. The sunset-orange food truck is posted within the parking lot of a run-down strip mall just a few blocks from the hospital complex. Beside the truck, bright red metal stools are pushed up to folding tables underneath a large E-Z Up canopy. The forested hill of the Hollyhock House is visible in the distance. I've visited multiple times for lunch and ordered immediately. The wait for food has usually been about 10 minutes. Unsurprisingly, the most impressive item was the al pastor. The bonfire-orange meat sports a thin charred line and a dynamic depth of flavor. The Taco Al Pastor is a masterclass in simplicity, featuring finely shaved pork and a single pineapple flake atop two thin corn tortillas. Even without any added salsa or fixings, this meat dazzles. Meanwhile, the Mulitas Al Pastor opts for chunks of meat; larger, thicker, pillow-y corn tortillas, and a generous helping of melty cheese; the result amps up the savory notes. The Vampiro de Asada is presented like a closed-faced tostada with grilled cheese; while I appreciated the crispy texture, the cheese overwhelmed the muted, mostly forgettable carne asada. Lastly, the Torta Leo's was stacked with assorted meats and a fried egg; however, the total was less than the sum of its parts, and the messy concoction reminded me more of a greasy food cart BEC sando than a terrific torta. Salsas were freely available by the ramiken; across the rainbow of varieties, my favorite was the smoky salsa de chile de árbol. The taco was a reasonable $2.30, while the mulitas and vampiro were each closer to $8 (and were 2-3x the size of the taco), and the torta was $16. While the asada and torta were forgettable, the al pastor was some of the best in LA. In the future, I'll be sticking exclusively with the tried-and-true al pastor.

This is what you want in a taco. This is high quality meat. Then when you blend all the ingredients together, you have everything you want. The service is solid. The ambiance is outdoors.
