The wine selection is fine -- prices are a probably 5 to 10 percent higher than Whole Foods -- but the help is profoundly lazy. The two old guys that seem to live there can barely look up from their ham salad sandwiches to say hello. The last time I was there I was using a walker (broken femur) and they didn't even get up to open the door when I came in or left. I told them to fuck off and it felt spectacular. read more

What a great walk-in experience! I'm a casual wine enthusiast but the selection features domestic favorites that I'm used to and a large amount of imports, I really enjoyed picking out a half dozen bottles and the wine monger was incredibly helpful as well. One of my favorite places! I have been there to just buy wine and have been there to sit at the bar and visit for awhile with friends (pre-Covid) I love walking around looking at the huge selection of wines- that's half the fun. Bob, the owner, and Peter are so friendly and wildly knowledgeable. They have been in this business for years and you can tell they love what they do! This isn't some place you go to have a wine flight and appetizers- this is an authentic wine store where the people know their craft and want to share it. This store shall henceforth be called Catnardo. Why you might ask? Well, let me explain. In April, I was living in Brooklyn with my partner and her friend X left NYC to go to Columbus to stay with her parents after facing some housing issues. My cousin happened to be living with her parents in Columbus at the same time, and by coincidence, they lived less than a mile away from each other. I owed X a small favor for helping with a birthday present I made for my partner, and she joked that she accepted cats and wine as payment and sent me her address. I got busy organizing mutual aid in South Brooklyn forgot and about it until months later, upon which I searched for wine shops near her home and I found this one! I called to ask if they had any wine bottles with cat labels, and the owner - Randy? - said he wasn't aware of any but if I left my number he could ask around and call me back. A couple of weeks passed and I didn't hear back so I figured this fun little mission was dead in the water, but then one morning the phone rang and it was Catnardo calling me back to tell me they could special order a bottle of wine that was SHAPED like a cat, and I could pick it up by Friday. I got my cousin to pick up the wine, she covertly dropped it off as a surprise present at X's house, and we had a hilarious moment while playing Jackbox that night! The friend, X, ended up moving into my partner's apartment in Brooklyn in July, and now the wine bottle doubles as a beautiful flower vase display. 11/10 read more

I love a good wine shop- and Carnardo's is just one of many in the Arlington- Grandview Heights area that I frequent, because I honestly like the staff at least 3 or 4 different wine stores. However, Carnardos stands out to me because of the smiley, friendly owner who never pressures us into buying something we don't want. He was even kind of enough to suggest a really good bottle well under my $20 limit. It was probably closer to $12 and tasted fabulous. He could have sold me a $20 bottle and reaped the $8 profits, but he didn't! He listened to exactly what I wanted and gave me the bottle I envisioned with our meal. I also appreciate the tasting bar, which is a rather creative way to recycle old wooden wine cases. The sides of the crates emblazoned with the vineyard logos create the front of the bar, making for an artistic conversation piece- and as I learned, represent a lot of crazy good wine. Granted, you can go to any grocery store and get a decent bottle of wine, but patronizing these smaller, independently-owned shops not only allows for a more interactive shopping experience, but a more educated one. I like to know what I'm spending my money on and if I can get more for my money, why not go somewhere a knowledgeable wine-lover can help? I recommend shopping here expecting to spend at least $10 on a bottle and we always go to a private store for more expensive wine purchases. I can't find mention of this shop anywhere online so I had to stop in after driving by. Place has a lot of wine but the sections aren't labeled. So, when you walk in you simply see a ton of bottles everywhere. Gets a little crowded and confusing if you're not a regular and you have no idea where anything is when there's only one person to ask. Besides that the prices are good; selection's not bad at all. There are some dusty bottles here and there. Bought two Malbecs tonight (2009 Arido and Tilia) for $9.99 each. They have a small wine tasting bar off to the right where you'll find the register. A few guys were drinking wine and eating a pizza, which that odor mixed with the smell of my Great Aunts attic gave the place an interest perfume. Perhaps it was from the Subway next door. I digress. Roughly five coolers in the back hold craft beer six packs (local and other), a few 40s in the bottom and chilled wines. Also have a small selection of cheese and a very, VERY small selection of cured meats in the end cooler. read more

Carnardo Wine & Cheese was a stop of mine because of a friend's referral. Thanksgiving was two days away and I was going to run to another local retailer until it as suggested I stop - mostly for advice from the helpful staff. So I stopped. Yeah, baby. I always feel like I've hit the jackpot when owner(s) and staff are there to help, not load you up with useless info. I wanted two bottles of the bubbly stuff and with some help landed ARGYLE 'brut' from Oregon US @ $22/bottle; owner asked that I report back 'cuz the product is getting strong reviews. I also grabbed a DARTING gewurtztramminer kabinett from Germany at $17/bottle for the turkey meal along with a $15/bottle DECOY chardonnay. I think the family will enjoy either or both as complimentary wine to the meal. There seemed to be some flights being sold at the smallish, non-plush bar area. Kinda cute in presentation and there weren't but a handful of wine lovers rapping about what was being poured. It all sounded good. In the famous words of a burlesque show fan, "We shall see", ... with the taste and body of the ARGYLE 'brut". I did like the helpfulness of sales staff and the wide assortment of wine. The best small wine stores have caring staff that learn about the preferences of their customers and do not sneer when someone asks for something less than the accepted best. I love Italian wines, especially the simple table varieties such as Barbara di Asti. Sure, a Barolo is swell and all but there are other choices out there. What I liked about Carnardo is that the staff didn't balk when I asked for the Barbara. They showed me the selections and helped me understand the differences in vineyards. Very helpful and courteous. They didn't try to upsell me, which I appreciate. When I'm ready to spend heavy, I know where I'll be taking my business. read more

This place has so much potential. But it falls short all day long. They do have an amazing wine selection. Story ends there. When you visit there are one of two guys there. The main guy I see is horribly rude and unsocial. Often found outside smoking like a chimney. I've come in on several occasions and attempt to be friendly, but it's always a no-go. He's pompous and wants to think he is much more sophisticated than most of his clientele. He has treated me like a second class citizen every time. He acts like their wine selection is so high end and European, which may be in some small ways, yet mostly I see all the regulars found in grocery stores. Tonight, I tried a wine and ended up not liking it. Instead of offering something else he said I must like more California wines and that California can only aspire to be as good as the wine I just had from France. Ummm k? I'm an American and yes, sorry, love Napa Valley wines. Then I asked him about my upcoming wedding and ordering wine from him. He quickly snubbed the whole idea of me buying wine from them. I don't know why I bother to be honest, other than it's so close to my home and I love wine. Tonight solidified it. I'm sure this guy has amazing knowledge about wine, but l whenever I asked any questions he barely answered. He never even acknowledges me when I walk in. He's useless to say the least. There is another guy there, but I do not see him as often. He's nicer and friendly. But he must work opposite times I stop in. When it comes to wines, you either know it or you don't . The staff at Carnardos definitely know what they're talking about. All of them are enthusiasts and have personal cellars at home. They can make great recommendations for every occasion, and have a large enough selection to work in any price range. Every year our company places a large champagne order with Carnardo for an event. This was our fourth year ordering (an order that is close to $10,000). I called to place this order, and my phone died mid-call. The owner called back immediately and our receptionist answered. She was told verbatim to "Never call back here again, you pulled me away from my customers on my busiest day to just hang up." and "I'm gonna go all Trump on you." If he was so busy, I'm not quite sure how he had the time to call back to yell at the company receptionist, who wasn't even aware of the order. I am appalled at how this is how a large customer is treated. How rude, let alone unprofessional. As a business owner it is completely inappropriate to speak to a customer with such disrespect. I have come to this shop over the past seven years, and I have come to appreciate the friendliness of the staff and the expertise of the owner. He is friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable.
