Loved everything about the Carolina Inn and their restaurant, Crossroads, was no exception. We ate here Sunday morning before checking out when they only offer Sunday buffet. The buffet was one of the best I've seen from an omelette station, lots of delicious food stations (my daughter said the shrimp was so good that she went up for seconds) and so many yummy tasting desserts. We were in and out within 45 minutes since the buffet was self serve. We did have to track down a waitress in order to pay, but no biggie since it was a lovely atmosphere to enjoy while waiting. I can't speak to their normal meals, but if it was as good as the Sunday buffet I"m sure it's great! read more

Just like others have said before the staff were amazing. I do wish they would've had name tags because I like to know the names of the servers to give them credit. One of the girls recently turned 21 she said and she was very friendly and approachable. We sat at the bar to eat and have a few drinks for a girls night. It definitely is a special occasion type of place because it is so extremely expensive. I literally cringed when I paid almost $50 for two drinks for the night. I got a single glass of wine as well as an espresso martini. Not really anything special. It almost seems like a lot of the hype around it is because it's so expensive it's considered "classy". It's just silly It was cool to check out some of the downstairs area of the hotel but I wouldn't be back anytime soon unless for an event or another gathering. I will say everything that I got from the drinks to the shared appetizer of pistachio feta(?) and pita was good. It was a lot better experience with the food than my first experience during a lunch time I came with my nana years before. Not sure why this place gets mediocre reviews. We went for both dinner (at the bar) and breakfast. Breakfast was great all around. We did small plates for dinner which was a bit hit or miss. The she-crab soup and the limoncello crème brûlée were not good, but that was more than offset by the lamb sliders and other plates. Service was very good, as was the ambiance. read more

We had delicious dinner at Crossroads but I have to say the Sunday brunch buffet was my favorite. The dinner menu offers classics such as steak, fish and they have wonderful appetizers and salads. We had the she crab soup and the burrata salad and both were fantastic. I had the salmon and my mom had the filet mignon and both were very fresh and healthy and tasty. We had the sorbet and ice cream trio as dessert. The ice cream tasted like freezer burn though so I would not get that again. The real winner was Sunday brunch. There is a buffet with all kinds of hot entrees and sides, salads, pastries and omelet station. Our server was so gracious and kind and the service was excellent. Brunch comes with coffee and juices and is really all-you-can-eat. At $39 a person before tax and gratuity, that is also a great price for the selection and quality. Pancakes bigger than your face, hot cholesterol chocolatier than a bar of chocolate, brunch service better than your wildest dreams. Breakfast at crossroads is EPIC! You can either get alacarte on weekdays or go for their brunch buffet on Sunday for $40 a pop. I ordered the chocolate chip pancakes and hot chocolate. I could not even though i wanted to finish the pancakes. They were light and fluffy, big and delicious yet crispy! Then the perfect hoy chocolate to sip on while watching the university game. Next morning we got the buffet! The spread was amazing. We spent 1.5 hr chilling and eating their. All their desserts are delicious, the live omelette station was very nice as well. We were staying at the Carolina inn and had breakfast included with our stay. The restaurant is on the ground floor with plenty seating options, both indoors and outside. The first morning I had a hot chocolate and bagel with cream cheese and salmon. It was delicious. I didn't think they could top that. But the did. The next morning they had a whole breakfast buffet. The spread was delicious. The staff was sweet too, elevating the experience further. Their food is amazing, and I would recommend it to anyone in the area. read more

I came here for their Christmas in July afternoon tea. The concept is super fun! In the afternoon tea room they had Christmas decor, were playing Christmas music, and had a super fun (and inclusive) tea and treats menu. While our server was friendly she basically dropped everything off and never came back. They were unfortunately out of the tea I wanted and the suggestion of a great replacement was not actually a comparable replacement at all. The tea treats themselves were tasty, but nothing that blew me away. Especially for the price, I was expecting a bit more. First and foremost, the staff that took care of us were fantastic. Want to lead with that. But I do have to express how disappointed I was with this experience. My fiancé and I went for his birthday. We were perusing the menu and ordered a couple of drinks (lemon drop & a vodka soda). He decided that he wanted the Panko crusted chicken so instead of getting an entrée, I decided to get the burger upon a recommendation from our bartender. Later, overlooking the wine list we see Sonoma Cutrer listed for $22 a glass (and 120 a bottle!) you can buy Sonoma Cutrer for $17.00 at Wegmans (or Winestore in Morrisville-yet the glass was five dollars more than that in the bottle... Well, you get it! The chicken sandwich was inedible! Incredibly dry and, the taste was awful. Apparently they used to serve a buttermilk chicken sandwich that the server told us was much better. When we kindly told our server that the sandwich was terrible he said "well you get a free dessert for the birthday" versus offering us a substitution or to take it off of our bill (we literally had one bite and that was it.) We also stated that the price of the glass of wine at $22 was outrageous. Server told us ha ha we were just talking about the cost of wine here-they get that the prices are off. As I said, the servers were lovely, but I was incredibly disappointed, especially after waiting so long to go there and then to have a birthday celebration be so disappointing, when we could've gone to so many other places for a much nicer meal (at much better prices). Two drinks, a beer and a glass of wine-a shrimp appetizer (that was delicious by the way!) a burger and a chicken sandwich cost $150 plus tip equaling $180 total. I was stunned that they didn't take the sandwich off of the bill, send over a manager, to discuss... or again, offer to swap it out for something else? Anything etc. but I was also stunned at the exorbitant prices for what you received. We did get a nice birthday dessert, (thanks!) but we will not be returning to crossroads. I rarely leave bad reviews and I enjoy dining at many places and don't mind paying a higher price for quality. This was not that. read more

A friend and I reserved a table for afternoon tea this past Sunday and it was a lovely experience. They have a (small) separate room for afternoon tea-goers, so you're surrounded by the towers of pastries and tiny sandwiches. I can definitely understand why a reservation is needed, since there were only a few tables there. The teapots and teacups were so cute, I love that each person gets a unique design. I ordered the Carolina Inn Blueberry tea, which had the most stunning ruby color, fresh blueberry flavor, and some sweetness without any sugar cubes added. Our waiter was super kind and explained what each dessert was on the tower. Our favorite dessert was the layered cake which included layers of cream or mousse. I absolutely loved the scones, which came with lemon curd, clotted cream, and some sort of jam. I highly recommend reserving a table here and spending an afternoon chatting with friends. read more

Went as a couple on thanksgiving night. Was concerned when we arrived to find out the was only one waitstaff for the restaurant. I noticed right away there were three bartenders however? Anyway, Clarissa , the sole waitstaff pulled it out! She hustles all night.... I realize this is supposed to be a review on the restaurant but this effort deserves top billing. The hotel was beautifully decorated and the food was very good. She had the roasted chicken and I had the fresh catch on top of a Lowcountry Bouillabaisse. Hers was very good and mine was great! The food was relatively timely so no long waits. The only critical mention on the food would be the bread with the bouillabaisse had a spread on it - seems almost counterproductive for bread with bouillabaisse as the best this for bread is to soak up sauce!! We also had the sangria and the "nebula" which was surprisingly good. A rye whiskey with Pinot noir and simple syrup. Very tasty! So - 4 stars for limited gluten free choices ... sorry but I gotta stay true to my girl! read more

My experience at Crossroads was okay, but not what I expected from an experience at the Carolina Inn. When my party arrived, no one at the hostess table really acknowledged us and he had to ask to be seated. Once we were seated, service was great! My food was also okay. The grits were superb! Probably some of the best I've had. I was not a huge fan of my omelet though. The sun dried tomatoes tasted a bit like raisins (very sweet). The restaurant was also very empty and quiet which felt odd. Overall, I am glad I tried Crossroads but probably will not return. read more

My spouse and I decided to try the Sunday brunch buffet recently. We haven't dined here in a number of years, which previously was for the lunch buffet. The dining area had been completely revamped to modern and somewhat sterile. We received a friendly greeting and were seated quickly. The young lady who took our drink order was very nice. I wish she'd been our waitress throughout, as the person who did get assigned our table didn't have a very warm personality. Oh, well, off to the buffet we went. The scrambled eggs were delicious and creamy and topped with finely chopped chives. Nice touch. The bacon and sausage was good too, but that's where it ends. The fried potatoes were a bit overcooked. The waffles were already made, cut in triangles and under lights, and very hard. I ordered an everything bagel to have with cream cheese, smoked salmon, capers and red onions and only ate about half. The bagel was blah and so was the salmon. The capers and equally tiny chopped red onion is nearly impossible to pick up with the oversized tongs. The lunch type food was a vegetable medley that didn't look very appetizing. My spouse had what was labeled as fried chicken that was actually chicken tenders that she said were greasy on the outside and dry on the inside. I had some of the Cesar salad, but the dressing by it didn't look appealing so opted for what was by the arugula that I thought was ranch, but it turned out to be an over flavored Cesar dressing. For dessert I had a cup of whipped cream raspberry that was very tasty. The tiny chocolate cake slice was just ok. The pineapple perfectly ripe off the fresh fruit tray. My spouse wasn't impressed with the cheesecake. All in all between the lackluster waitress and so-so buffet we weren't impressed, especially with a $64 check to pay. read more

We stopped by Crossroads today for lunch. Although it's technically a hotel restaurant, don't hold that against them. It's excellent, easily worthy of the 4 stars I awarded it. It's newly renovated, now with a more stark feeling, unlike it's previous warm atmosphere. Service, as always here, is extraordinarily good. The food, a glass of French Chardonnay and a fried green tomato sandwich with breaded (!!!) fries was great. As a matter of personal policy I won't give 5 stars based on a review of lunch. The Crossroads Chapel Hill is the restaurant at the elegant and historic Carolina Inn. Sadly, the restaurant is neither, and disappoints on nearly all levels. Our family attended their Sunday brunch with our UNC senior daughter on just another Sunday. The ambiance is that of a mid-tier suites hotel free breakfast. The service was absent from start to finish: there were frequently no plates for the buffet; the serving utensils were caked with product (the single tongs for the co-plated smoked salmon, capers, onions, and hard-boiled eggs were so caked with egg that at least one guest served themselves with their fingers, rather than smear their salmon with unwanted eggs); the server brought coffee, but never returned to offer refills; and we had to ask the hostess to find our waitress for the check. Lastly the food was lackluster with dry pastries, tasteless sausage, and cold stacks of waffles. The custom omelets were just OK. I stayed at this hotel for 8 nights for business and only had their cocktails in the evenings--until breakfast on my last day. The food leaves more to be desired but I at least thought the prices are reasonable for a hotel breakfast. I got the eggs benny and loaded grits (bacon, tomatoes, and cheese). The bennies were tasty though the bread was hard to cut into. The saving grace was the crispy ham and nice runny eggs. The grits were the star of the show, but mainly cuz I haven't had loaded grits before. The 3 stars are for the good, but if I could, I'd give 5 stars to the bar and bartenders. Went for a family tea together, as we'd gone many years ago, and it was very nice. This time service was absent, the finger foods were minimal and lackluster, as were the sweets. There was 3 times as many sweets as finger sandwiches, all of it was subpar. The price does not even come close to justifying an afternoon tea. This used to be a more upscale restaurant but over the past few years has been converted more to a bar and grill. The decor and centrally located bar all indicate a more casual ambiance. We had originally booked a Saturday dinner for my birthday but had to switch to a lunch reservation when something else came up. We ordered a beer, bloody mary, pulled pork sandwich, and pasta dish. I'd have to say the food and the service were okay but not spectacular. In fact our server seemed to disappear for long periods of time. Perhaps their dinner menu is more refined, but lunch was just okay. I did enjoy the fact that the pulled pork was chunky and had burnt bits instead of being shredded mushy. Sunday brunch at Crossroads inside The Carolina Inn...delicious. If you need a little pampering, and are willing to spend the money, then find your way over to Crossroads Chapel Hill. My wife made a reservation for 10:30 and insisted there would be a dress code. Well, bless her heart, she grew up "visiting" the Carolinas Back in the day when those things were real. Today's meal was not over crowded, and families came and went in everything from shorts and flip flops to Sunday best. They start you off with coffee an juice of your choice. Lattes and espresso is available, which made me happy. They bring out cheese biscuits, fruit, and little fruit smoothy shooters (yum!) The buffet line has eggs Benedict, home fries, bacon, sausage, pork, grits, etc. The dessert side has many wonderful treats, and the waffle table was chock full of toppings and such. The omelette bar with everything you'd want in an omelette was manned by a locally known chef named Pheron. Seriously... the chef was making omelettes! However, it's the details that make it amazing. The eggs Benedict had poached eggs that have not hardened over the burner. The bacon was crispy and had thick slices of bread under it to soak off excess grease. The grits had everything from cheese to bacon to jalapeños for toppings... it just goes on. The atmosphere is relaxed, the service is excellent, and a chef made my omelette. Such an upsetting experience. Since the Hyatt bought the Carolina inn, they have been increasing getting rid of everything that made the Carolina inn so magical. From the furniture, decor, ambience and food, everything has been ruined. The menu at crossroads is completely different, with worse quality and higher prices. The decor and furniture at crossroads is trying to be upscale modern but it looks cheap and tacky. I have gone to the Carolina inn and crossroads for 15+ years but I will never be dining here again. What a sad, sad thing that Hyatt has completely destroyed a true gem of chapel hill. They should be ashamed. It takes a lot of effort to destroy something that was so magical. read more

We stayed in the Carolina Inn and the wife made Dinner reservations as this place is attached and convenient as we had a busy day and did not want to walk all over town again. We lucked out and we were sat in Zubar (Pronounced ZooBear) Spelling(?) and he was so personable, I am not sure why they have a 3 1/2 star rating? Boggles the mind. Dinner was amazing (See Pictures), cooked perfectly, Was hot, timely and other then a few minutes into dinner having to ask for water, we wanted for nothing during the entire meal, Zubar took care of us. Do yourself a favor and ask for him except on Sundays! lol He is spending time with Boston..He has been in the States longer than his home country of Morocco. If I had to point out a spot for improvement, it is that the restaurant gives you mixed feelings about what it is, a Bar, A Diner, a Nice Restaurant? The service and Food say Nice Restaurant! The ambiance is really dumbed down to a Regular Hotel Buffet Breakfast feel, not the food. The food at Breakfast was very good. So Do yourself a favor, stay here and eat good and GO HEELS! read more

We went for holiday high tea. It is served in a quaint tent in the courtyard. The presentation is on point, with a mad hatter style mixture of tea pots, cups, and plates. The scones were served warm and delicious. Those were the highlights. The tea selection is bagged variety (rather than loose leaf) and extremely limited. The tea is served lukewarm. The remaining food selection is underwhelming for the price. The clotted cream is heavy like butter. The chocolate ganache cake was inedibly heavy. Also, beware seeking vegetarian accommodation. They were able to accommodate only after reminders and the replacements were an afterthought (a tiny salad and two tiny quiches). Also, the temperature alternated between freezing cold and burning hot in the tent, depending on whether the heater was clicked on. It was a valiant attempt at high tea, but ultimately disappointing - and what should have been the main event (tea) was lost in the experience. If you want excellent high tea, try Fearrington instead. read more

This review is for happy hour only - not food! This spot is connected to the Carolina Inn which our friends were staying at. We had a fun happy hour here with a large group in the outdoor cabanas. There are some really nice shaded lounge chairs that i thought were super fun. A waitress came out to take our drink orders and brought them out rather than having us go to the bar to order which was a nice touch. They've nailed the ambiance here. The selection of beer was not extensive but enough variety for me with some local NC beers. I tried an Appalachian Mountain Blonde that was good. read more

If they were short-staffed, I certainly understand but they could have offered a table. After being seated, we waited 10+ minutes and had to ask the same host to find our serves - she ended up waiting on us (because our table was next to the host stand). The service was certainly not what we expect from Crossroad. This is a can't-miss timeless restaurant in the heart of Chapel Hill. On top of the classy ambiance of the actual restaurant, the hotel itself is beautiful and grand with both hints of classic and modern details. There's almost always weddings happening on the weekends in one or more of the many ballrooms, and on Fridays in the summertime they have live music on the back lawn. I went to the last one of the season, and my friends and I ordered every single appetizer on the menu - everything was delicious! I think the pimento cheese and crab dip were my favorites, but you really can't go wrong. There's a food truck for these events too if you prefer that instead. I love that they change the menu based on what's in season, and the fish is always going to be the freshest catch possible. I came here recently with some friends for dinner, and we got a full spread - octopus, charcuterie and a pressed watermelon and crab salad as appetizers. The charcuterie was definitely my favorite, with their pâté making a fan out of me. For my entree, I got the scallops and they were seared to perfection. The sauce is what made it though. Food was top notch. We're vegetarian and they were able to accommodate accordingly. We had the fried green tomato salad with the bacon taken out. Very well done and tasty. For the entrees we did the butternut squash risotto and potato gnocchi. A bit heavily buttered but the taste was amazing. The gnocchi melted in your mouth. For dessert, we had the chocolate pot de creme. It was good but felt that it could have been better. Overall, a great dinner! read more

This was our first time at the restaurant/bar since it's been totally made over, and we liked the changes! Felt way more welcoming to "outsiders" than it used to. Less stuffy, yet they still retained some of the old charm on the walls. We sat at the bar and found it to be very comfortable, with nice Service, good drinks and good food. We shared the Clam Frites. Wow good! Perfectly cooked tender Clams with Benton's Bacon & Fennel in a Smoked Pork Broth...brilliant! I don't know who Benton is, but they found their calling making Bacon, and that Smoked Pork Broth was killer. Loved the fennel in it also. Not to mention the Carolina Bleu hand cut fries. Mmmmm. We also tried the Lemon Poppy Chiffon with Lemon Curd and Blueberry Ice Cream. The "Chiffon" tasted like pound cake to me. Not quite what I expected.
