However, I was scheduled last year for an appointment in May 2026 and I just recently was canceled since Dr Boatwright won't be available. My new appointment could be as early as November. What I have learned from my experience with this business is that they don't prioritize or value your time. I made an appointment with them for an inflammation in my eye and was not seen by the doctor for almost 2 hours after my appointment was scheduled. I also explained to him a concern for a specific blood test due to my family history , and he wrote me a referral for blood work, but didn't include what I had mentioned. Then, when that information got worse i called to make an appointment or see if they could write me a stronger prescription eye drop for my condition. Instead of telling me they couldn't write a prescription without an appointment they had me wait, and wait, and wait for a call back i was told i would get but never came. I called several times, and finally got my answer. So now my condition is worsening and I have wasted time I could've spent making an appointment else where. I have no issue with there not being time for an appointment, but to not respect my time and condition is disappointing. Will not be returning. read more

Before deciding which eye surgery I wanted to do . I had questions to understand more. It's my eyes after all. And it's a high cost surgery to correct the vision. I was told by the doctor that I would have to go back in. I explained that I was too busy with work and I would appreciate very much a quick phone call back from the doctor Hunter. They booked me for an annual eye exam and when I arrived they said the exam had been canceled and asked if I had been notified. I said no. They explained they probably didnt have the right contact information and I told them I booked it BECAUSE THEY HAD CONTACTED ME!! a long drive for me ( 30 minutes ) to find out they had canceled me.Well, I have canceled them. I went to Dr Clark at Carolina Eyecare Physicians on Long Point Rd, for a contact prescription. Dr Clark was great. It was easy enough to schedule an appointment but the follow up was a nightmare! The voicemail system is impossible and so was the staff. They ordered trail lenses of the new prescription and I was told they would call when they arrived. 10 days later, I had to call them. When I went in to pick them up, I had to wait 15 minutes for them to find the trial lenses. When I reminded them that they were suppose to call me, I was told they did and left several messages. I looked through my phone and showed them that there were no calls from their office. Then someone came out from a side office when she heard the conversation and accused me of leaving negative reviews on Facebook. I didn't know what she was talking about and told her that wasn't me. She pulled up the facebook page and I pointed out the message signed by someone with a different name! Yet, she insisted it was me and said some people change their names to disguise themselves. How absurd and what a horrible way to treat a patient. I turned and left. It's unfortunate you can't post a review with a 0 or negative star rating. read more

Dr. Boatwright and his staff do not leave you sitting and waiting too long. They are super efficient, helpful and excellent at explaining the problem of my cataracts and how precisely (nothing is guaranteed and I am good with that caveat) the surgery will result. I have been coming here for years and never had even any hint of a problem with the office and staff. read more

The service at the facility was fine but the bill was not. Even though I was "in-network" I got a huge bill. My co-pay was merely$35 for a specialist, so why was I billed $252 after they got paid? Billing code issues? Or do they think I will pay and not question? Even after I called to ask for a correction, I got the same bill again. They already got paid over $60 for the visit and yet did not reflect it on my bill and told me on my second call they re-submitted for more payment! This business has billing issues! Do not use them. their billings practices are shady. my insurance is an HMO Medicare and eye refractory is a covered benefit if billed correctly. instead, they make you pay upfront $65 so they get paid for it. the billing person told me they never refund any money. they billed under medical instead of vision and did not bill the correct network which they are contracted with. Their call center needs to be retrained, 4 times I told the girl new patient appointment. I told her I was returning call and want to make a new patient appointment for eye exam. She kept asking me to listen to the voice message I told her again new patient appointment I finally had to hang up because she was not getting it. Called back 3 hours later and made appointment Dr was great but they have you sign papers before visit about refractive not covered not once does it say how much and no one at front deck knew how much well it was $65 and you better pay now otherwise according to check out girl they'll send to collections. 1 star is too good for these people! I had an appointment with the same doctor I have seen for the past several years but it was canceled with about a weeks notice. It could not be rescheduled with him for a couple of months so I agreed to go to a new doctor. I arrived for that appointment and the entire place was shut down. I go to the Carolina eye care in west Ashley. Dr Berdine Burger is very good. She takes her time with you and I've always been very happy with my prescriptions. When I had a lengthy conjunctivitis she fit me into her schedule several times and took good care of me. The front office staff are friendly. read more

What business that you obtain service from and pay for that service that day and then over a year later sends you a surprised bill for that day for something else. Received a bill over a year later for a procedure I did not receive. I am a diabetic and have VSP which pays for retina scans. VSP doesn't pay for invoices over a year old. I have discussed this matter many times with Carolina Eyecare and VSP to work this out. I asked for the photos but none were given. And now they sent the bogus bill to a collection agency. read more

Today I was scheduled for an appointment with Dr. Newland at 12:30 in North Charleston. I waited almost a month for this appointment. After waiting for one hour in the exam room, I stepped out and asked the staff whether there was an issue. As it turns out, Dr. Newland was just returning from lunch. I waited a few more minutes in the exam room. Because of how disrespectful this was of my time and there was no apology whatsoever, I left without being treated by him. As Carolina EyeCare has grown over the years, they seem to be more disorganized and less caring about their patients. I called the main office and asked to speak with someone so I could share this experience. No one called me back. Also, I asked if there was another doctor in the practice that I could see, but it would be another month before I would be able to get into see the doctor. I contacted an ophthalmologist from MUSC. Instead of waiting a month for an appointment, I will be able to be seen tomorrow. I don't recommend Dr. Newland or Carolina EyeCare. read more

First eye (cataract surgery) operation went without a hitch. I felt well taken care of. Second time was a vivid nightmare. It was 3 hours late. I was FULLY aware of the proceedings. Had a different anesthetist, was fully conscience and felt smothered throughout the procedure. Although the results seem fine the hand off, post op treatment, all seemed off. When I came back for post op, I was given a machine vision test and afterward was told "Your insurance isn't going to cover the cost of that test". Really?? Should have said that before they gave me a test I had to pay for, worthless to me. I have NOT been back to these people in over a year and do not feel I should be charged for a worthless test that Medicare refuses to pay for, I should have been informed before they administered the worthless test. read more

This is primarily a poor review for the billing practices of this company (maybe a Carolina Eye Care issue or US Eye company issue) but I went to see Dr. Knowlton at the Mary Ader office to get a second opinion on a specific eye issue. After being there for 2 hours for what was like a 3-5 minute interaction with the actual physician, I was billed for my comprehensive eye exam (which I paid and accepted) but also $60 for a contact lens management fee. Short story is, I get my contacts and prescription managed by an optometrist. I did not go to this visit for contacts management, but they provided me a prescription anyways which I just thought nothing of and just took (literally just a printed piece of paper). Well, after calling 3x to dispute this charge (and after the original phone call representative telling me the charge was waived), they kept sending me bills and on my last phone call told me it is a patient responsibility. The second phone call the representative told me she would call me back after looking into it, and I never received another call. Simply by accepting the prescription and walking out with it, I have to pay $60. Imagine going somewhere and having something given to you that you weren't even seeking and then making you pay for it! Anyways, between this billing issue and the ridiculously long appt, I will never be going back to this office again or recommending this company/provider to anyone. read more

if you have to use Carolina Eyecare, avoid at all costs their West Ashley Office. I had zero issues with my first prescription issued by Dr, Boatwright. My glasses were properly fitted and arrived promptly. When I went back this year for my exam, I ended up seeing an optometrist as Dr. Boatwright was booked out for several months. The Doctor while professional enough, screwed up the prescription. The glasses when they finally arrived, were not right. I had to return for a follow-up exam and subsequent wait for new lenses. not only were the replacement lenses still slightly off, but the optician also did not attempt to ensure a proper fit. The staff referred me to a specialist unaffiliated with the Carolina Eyecare group. After a 3-month wait for an appointment, I said the hell with it. Finally went to their Mt Pleasant clinic where the optician was extremely competent and refitted my glasses which greatly minimized the vision issues.\ Today I headed back to West Ashley to order replacement lenses due to scratching the current set. While they offer replacement lenses during the 1 st, the optician was rude and insisted I leave the 2 $2,800.00 glasses with her while the lenses were made elsewhere. UNACCEPTABLE! Last time (2 years ago) on my previous prescription, the lenses were delivered and the optician swapped out the damaged ones for new ones. Apparently, that somewhat simple task is beyond the current optician's skill or motivational level. I got a copy of the Rx and will now shift to a different practice. read more

I'll never go back to this business. For several years Dr. Boatright kept telling me that I would eventually need cataract surgery, so finally last year I decided to go for it. For the first eye, everything seemed to be going well with the preop procedures, then after I had an IV and meds going into me, Boatright basically ambushed me with wanting to pray with me before the surgery. I had no idea that was coming! I have never felt more uncomfortable and had no idea how to react. As a non-christian, really non-religious at all, I felt like I had to go along with it, or how would it affect his confidence or feelings toward me? He was about to cut open my eye, after all. It was very very unprofessional. This is a medical center, not a church. Then, during the surgery, the anesthesia didn't work. I saw and felt everything, during the laser part, and the pushing and cutting and whatever was going on during the surgery and putting the lens in. I remember all of it. It was pretty horrible. I really felt like I had no choice but to go through with the second eye a few weeks later, and I told Boatright that I felt everything the first time and he said, "Oh, that shouldn't have happened" and basically just brushed me off. He also wanted to pray again just before wheeling me in, and I just figured whatever at that point, let's just get this over. After more than a year out from the surgeries, my eyes are totally messed up. At the checkups, he again just brushed off my concerns and said it might take a year to heal. But after about 16 months, my eyes are extremely light sensitive, I have trouble focusing and my eyes feel like they are vibrating whenever the the lights are on or if there is any contrast, like looking at a computer screen in a dark room. Plus, I still have terrible heavy floaters that cause me to have to keep shifting my eyes around to get them out of my center vision. People must think I'm crazy when I talk to someone, because I look like I can't look them in the eye. I hope I can find an ophthalmologist who can help me get my eyes somewhat better, but I won't go back to Boatright, he scares me. read more

I came here as a +1 with my wife, so she had a ride home after her corrective surgery, performed by Dr Solomon. The front desk staff and RN's were all very helpful and courteous, and allowed me to back with her while she waited on her turn. When she was done, they explained to me where to pick her up and have the car ready. Separate door for those who have had procedures done so that those waiting aren't shocked by the patients walking out with patches over their eyes (I joke). She's going back in this week for the 2nd eye, because they couldn't do them both in the same day, but the procedure has been a success with the eye that was already completed. Now, if I could afford the procedure, I would probably do the same thing at this location, but we'll save that for another day. read more

Love Dr. Boatwright but the hassle of dealing with his staff is no longer worth the effort. I've been a patient here for 3 procedures over 2+ years. Waiting to see him is the worst - sometimes up to 2 hours. I work so no can do anymore. I call to make payment on my account and the staffers can't get the name right, transfer me to various other locations, then after giving all info their computer goes "Blip, I don't know what just happened" and we do it all over again. That is, if you can get through. Often it's the answering service, even 8 miutes before they close at 5, telling me they are closed. Got my notice to have annual eye exam. Called today to schedule and they tell me that's a mistake, after last surgery in April I am good to go until April 2018. Again the clerical errors and all this took me 18 minutes to get connected to be told this after 3 transfers while I sit on hold at work. BOOM, I'm done. Dr. Itharat, here I come. read more

Do not hesitate to go to this office / group. We were visiting Charleston from G.R. Mich, and the first night here I developed an issue with my left eye that evening. We called first thing the next day and I was given an appointment that day with Dr Folgar the retina specialist. It turned out to be a torn retina which he was able to laser repair that afternoon. I cannot say enough about the awesome care I received from every staff member we encountered, including and in particular Dr Folgar. My wife had to have eyelid surgery and Dr. Howard came highly recommended by her general practitioner. Even her dermatologist said if he had to go to anyone for eye surgery, Dr. Howard would be his choice! I was her designated driver since she was sedated so I don't have first hand knowledge of her experience, but she told me that the staff and nurses were awesome. They put her at ease and took very good care of her from beginning to end. Don't tell her, but she looked a hot mess afterwards but I'm happy to report she has healed nicely and her eye is looking great! read more

Please avoid the Belle Hall location at all costs. Went successfully to annual appointment and provider (only beneficial staff member) had to order trials. Stated should be in office in a few days. Placed order for my traditional lens and was awaiting trial lens. Paid My copay and to my knowledge had zero balance. Waited 9 days for update on lens delivery and told to call back next week. Called the following week and told again to call back next week. At this point the office staff never reached out to update as to issues, anticipated delivery or simple follow up. All Follow up was on my part. Horrible service. When I called to get my prescription to order the lens on my own I met great resistance so I drove back to the office to get my records in person. At this point I was told I owed $5.00. Amount is ridiculous but I inquired why as I had a zero balance at my original appointment. Was told they didn't quote the right amount? Really! The support staff, billing and management at this facility is a very poor representation. dishonest billing principles. Will not return and will not recommend. read more
