Dr Waring is simply the BEST. For 57 years I have needed to wear contact lenses, not the soft contacts, but the "hard gas permeable ones". During that time I could not adjust to glasses and was totally dependent on my contacts. Being in my 70s, I knew that I would, at some point soon, not be able to continue wearing them, and at my annual visit this year to my eye doctor, I was told that I needed to move immediately to glasses because of the way the contacts were riding on my corneas. When I told my doctor that I was very concerned about wearing glasses and did not want to be forced to limit my activities to only those I could do with poor vision, he referred me to Dr Waring to see if surgery might be the answer to my situation. From my very first visit with Dr Waring, I knew that the procedure we decided on would be successful. On that visit he spent a great deal of time explaining what could be done to restore my vision and what were my possible options based on my situation. He was most willing to spend as much time as I needed to understand the two different surgeries and the process for before, during and after surgery. From that time on, I felt as though we worked in partnership or as a team. At each visit he allowed me as much time as needed until he knew I was comfortable with the procedure and surgery. His caring manner and his ability to put you at ease and feel as though you are talking to a friend who is excited and thrilled about what the outcome will be, encouraged me to go forward as soon as possible to have the first eye done.. Dr Waring visited me in the pre-op room to make sure I was doing well and to assure me that everything was going to be all right and he was there in the post- op room as soon as I returned to congratulate me on a successful surgery. When he came around the corner to enter my room after the first surgery, I realized that I could see every one of his features, where before I would have only been able to see an outline of a figure! At my post- op appointment the next morning, when I was tested for my corrected vision, I had 20/15. I could read everything on the chart including the very teeniest little line where the figures look like little black ants running across the screen. I was anxious to do the second eye and as soon as I had a successful four week appointment after the first surgery, I scheduled an appointment for surgery on the second eye. The operation went as splendidly as the first and I had 20/20 vision at both my post-op appointment and at the fourth week appointment. When I realized how well I could see and how much my life had been improved, I couldn't thank him enough. I wanted to give him a great big hug. His manner is so warm, kind and cheerful that he gladly accepted one. Dr Waring's staff is professional, efficient and personable. Calls with questions were answered immediately and I was provided with their email addresses in case I might prefer at some time to send my questions by email. I was always greeted with a smile and a warm welcome. I never had to wait more than 10 minutes before I was seen be Dr. Waring. It didn't matter what time of day I had scheduled the appointment, it held true for the first appointment in the morning as well as those throughout the day. I have recommended Dr Waring to everyone I know who would like to have the most qualified and successful surgeon to examine their eyes and see if he can improve their vision. My companion for my operations was so impressed and delighted by the success of my surgeries, that she immediately scheduled one for herself after my first one and had her other eye done one week after I had my second surgery. Now I can continue to travel and read as much as I want. I couldn't ask for more. I no longer have to rely on someone else to read the information descriptions given beside paintings, sculptures and displays in art galleries and museums. Also, I can now read street signs before I go right past them(GPS in not always accurate) and I have excellent vision at night. The initial visit was more thorough than I would have ever imagined, even for someone like me who's been nearsighted and stigmatic since her mid-teens, that is to say, a good portion of my life. Therefore, I was very anxious to know if we could proceed with adjusting my eyesight. When Dr. Waring introduced himself and explained the different possibilities available, I was not only relieved, but also charged with an energy that revealed my lifelong dream of awaking to a discernable morning light. The following visits (there were two more) to the MUSC Magill Vision Center revealed the professional approach the entire equip demonstrated. Everyone was courteous and professional as one would expect, but it was the certitude that only capable seasoned technicians have, something that constantly accompanied every examination I needed prior to the surgery. Dr. Waring suggested lens implants and that is what we did, first in one eye to be followed by the other nearly a week later. The day of my operation, I didn't know what to expect, so I was a little nervous to say the least. This feeling was quickly abated by how I was regarded, pampered and put on the same level as every human being in the hospital (yes, even nurses are humans!). I was reassured through each step of the process, even to what I might experience, and they were emotionally stimulating. In the first part procedure, I experienced patterns and colors, beautiful and fantastic that I cannot to this day easily describe in its entirety - my profession is within the visual arts. All of these experiences added to a disbelief; that is until the next morning when I opened my eyes and told my husband what time the alarm clock was showing. I danced, sang and played, as I felt strong without a care as if I were a youngster again. Even then, I had to get used to this new state of being after a lifetime in my condition; I was nearly -12! I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about my experience with Dr. George Waring and his staff at the MUSC Magill Laser Center. I was diagnosed with dysfunctional lens syndrome in both eyes. Dr. Waring performed "Catalys Laser Assisted Refractive Lens Exchange Surgery with Technis Multifocal Lens" on each of my eyes in May 2014. Dr. Waring and his staff were very professional and caring throughout the process. During the preliminary visits, Dr. Waring took time to explain the problems with my eyes and then to explain the options for correcting the problems. He and other staff members were so kind and caring on the days of surgery. They made sure that I understood exactly what would be done and continued to follow up after surgery. Dr. Waring called later in the day of each surgery to ask how I was feeling and if I had any questions or concerns. I have had wonderful results. After wearing reading glasses for many years, requiring progressive strengths, I now require no glasses. I now have better than 20/20 in both eyes. What a blessing this has been for me. I'm a pediatrician in Charleston, and have been a lifelong contact lens wearer. When contact lenses were no longer working, I started to look into Lasik. Before my refractive lens exchange, I was one who might have been referenced "the reluctant patient." Not only did I fear the procedure, I doubted it could clear up the acute angle glaucoma that had been a part of my life for around a dozen years. I was so wrong! The surgery (which I had postponed due to my fear) was a tremendous success. I now have 20/10 vision, no longer need glasses or contacts, and my pressures are in the normal range (no glaucoma drops). Dr. George O. Waring IV performed refractive lens exchange on both of my eyes in January 2016. At my last exam on February 24, my vision tested better than 20/20 in both eyes. It is great to be able to see at all distances without glasses. I enjoy not having to use a magnifying mirror to apply my makeup and reading the paper, driving and watching TV without glasses. I was totally relaxed during the procedures, and I had absolutely no pain during surgery and afterward. I must say that Dr. Waring and his team are very thorough. I have worn glasses for 35 years, and contacts for 28 years. I found out that I had damaged my eyes from over wearing my contacts. I was on the border for lasik PRK, and decided to get the Vision ICL procedure instead. This was the best thing I could have done. I could see 20/20 the next day. I think it may be even better now.
