Scheduled twice and waited about a month for my daughter's appointment. The office had her age on file but still allowed the appointment to be booked. When we arrived, they refused to see her due to an age policy that was never clearly communicated in advance. This resulted in a wasted visit and delayed dental care for my child. They took my 7 year old daughter back and gave her two different x rays without asking my permission. They were extremely unprofessional and sly. They try to separate the parent so they can do more to your child without your awareness to get more money from insurance companies and patients. 9/2/21: My son's insurance changed & he needed a cleaning. So, I found this place. I read the reviews, but I gave them a shot anyway. I completed the online form requesting an appointment & it took a long time for a response. When they finally called me, they took all of his insurance info & my demographic info and scheduled an appointment. Luckily, the appointment wasn't that far out. When we got there today, the front desk rep wasn't the most pleasant. She gave me about 10 forms to complete and asked us to have a seat. I completed them & left them on the desk. Then a hygienist came out asking if I had any concerns. I told her my concern & then she took him back alone. They don't allow parents back there & I didn't feel comfortable with that. He's old enough to speak up for himself though, so I allowed him to go back. After awhile, the hygienist came back to get me to speak to the dentist. I was shocked to see that it was a huge open room with a bunch of children sitting in seats instead of separate rooms like I'm used to. The dentist was nice, BUT she came up with all these things that my son needed done including a bunch of tooth extractions. She took X-rays and then said she was sending them over to the Oral surgeon. I didn't feel comfortable with what she was saying because his normal dentist never saw nor said these things before. On top of that, she said he had cavities yet they couldn't get him in until after JANUARY 2022. Huh?!?! How important is it for the cavities to be filled then?? That is ridiculous!! We got home & then the dentist called back asking if I could come back because she forgot to get a certain X-ray. I told her I would come back the next day. She told me to be there before 7:30 am & I was. They were the ones late. I sat there for over 45 min before they came to get my son. They took the X-ray & I left. I will never take my son back there. I don't trust them or their practices. I feel like it's a money thing. They were saying I owed for things they insurance covers. Certain insurances probably get better service. I will pay out of pocket to his normal dentist before I go back there. read more

I have been coming for years and the front desk was very unprofessional and whispering about our patients and you knew they was talking about one of the patients mother while in the front because one was ducking down in front of the other coworker. One of the workers would not make eye contact after that conversation because she knew I hear it. They saw my son for an emergency. It was a bait and switch when I called another dentist I was interested in, and they scheduled me at this other place. Then after all that, they told us we can't be a returning patient there because we aren't up to date on shots. They overcharged me and owed me a huge refund and then put it on me to "come in and bring my original method of payment if I was up to date on my shots" and eventually months later they told me they would just refund it. Then they proceeded to call me about 4x per week saying we were overdue for our next appointment. My son lives with Autism but is able to communicate well and is very bright. We came for an appointment and they basically do everything they can to keep parents out of the exam room. They advised he needed teeth pulled and I told them he has a horrible gag reflex. NO ONE LISTENS- he can't stand to be held or hugged and they literally gassed him up, we're holding him down while pulling his teeth. He was distraught for 2 days! The dental assistant was the only person who talked to me and the dentist didn't even have the courtesy to speak to me. They tried to charge me the original amount quoted when they did not complete the work and the check out clerk wanted to argue with me. He still has several teeth that need pulled and some wisdom teeth so the dental assistant said that they could do them all at that time, Today I come for a follow up and now I am told it's only for a cleaning so let's drag this out and get as much money as you can. I have Delta Dental but they want cash and want me to chase the insurance money down because they don't want to be bothered. I am so over this place! I had a good experience at Carolina Pediatric Dentistry this morning. I went in because my 16 month old had chipped both of his front teeth. As a new patient I had to fill out several forms that included explanations including insurance and the type of exam rooms. We had an X-ray since there had been a traumatic incident. I was able to hold my son during the process. We had a teeth cleaning with the hygienist. For little ones you also help hold your child during the process. We saw Dr. Kalaskey and she listened and was helpful. She went over possible options for the future and things to look out for in the coming days/weeks. I had doubts about this location after reading reviews. But after an initial visit, I plan to continue to go here. read more

They wouldn't even schedule an appointment without all of our insurance information. I didn't have it on hand, and said I would call back with it as soon as I was able to get it from my spouse. She told me the reason they HAD to have the information was because they have Medicaid and all cash pay patients (so patients that don't have insurance at all) sometimes they have insurance issues that come up right before an appointment. I wasn't trying to schedule for the next day or anything, and the fact that there are sometimes insurance issues the day before an appointment should not mean that you need my insurance to put my kids on the schedule at all. Not only that, if you have patients that have no insurance at all why do patients that have insurance need to have it on file to schedule an appointment? So patients with no insurance can schedule, but patients with insurance can't schedule until they provide insurance information? It seemed super sketchy, so I just ended the conversation without giving them more of our personal information. Judging by the reviews here I made the right call. read more

I have 2 young children and have been going here for about 3 yrs now. This place... I don't know where to begin... I'll just say that they will try to get every dollar they can from your children's teeth and pull at your heart strings to get it, you will feel like a shit parent who doesn't know how to properly brush their child's teeth and they will find some way to either cap, pull or talk you into a root canal for a baby (2-5yrs)..... I am so sick of the trickery and mental anguish I receive every 6 months I take my kids for a cleaning. The staff are forceful AND THEY DONT WANT YOU TO GO BACK AND BE WITH YOUR CHILDREN DURING ANY OF THEIR PROCEDURES INCLUDING CLEANINGS..... Hello, red flag! I even had a question about something written on my daughter's exam paperwork and the RECEPTIONIST tried to give me medical advice that was completely wrong.... Dr Johnson and Morris are very knowledgable and I have gone to other dentists for a second opinion and they would agree with their diagnosis but their practice is run very strange and cold and I think they teach their subordinates to act in a money fueled way; in fact I wouldn't be surprised if they get a commission on convincing parents to do unnecessary procedures.... they technicians don't show you where the kid's teeth have problems just a picture with circles and 'normal, moderate and severe' rating..... We decided to take our son to Carolina Pediatric Dentistry for a second opinion after finding out that our 10 year old needed to have 9 teeth pulled. Dr. Johnson was amazing! She made both me (Mom) and my son feel comfortable about the procedure. She even came in early because the procedure was somewhat urgent. Dr. Johnson checked in with me later that evening and the next morning to make sure that my son was doing ok. I can't say enough good things about this practice. read more

We had to wait 20 minutes past out appointment time and they don't let you go back with your children. You don't get to talk to the dentist, only an assistant at the very end of the appointment. She told me my son needs extensive dental work done on baby teeth. She said it was due to poor hygiene and when I questioned that, because we take very good care of my sons teeth, she had no other explanation. When I asked how our previous dentist didn't catch these issues before they got this bad, she said that non-pediatric dentists can't detect cavities in children's mouths as well as a pediatric dentist... wait, what? Isn't that the whole point of going to a dentist? We asked to speak to the dentist and even called later, but were told they were unavailable. We are getting a second opinion because this just doesn't feel right. Overall, the experience was really impersonal. My kids had an appointment for a cleaning. We do not have dental insurance and I pay everything out of pocket. When it was time to pay, one of the girls was explaining problems with my kids teeth and treatment plan. The treatment plan added up to $4000 and I was told if I didn't schedule something in 2 weeks, they were dropping my kids from their practice. I explained that I don't have $4000, yet alone the $2000/$1000/$1000 with it being split up. She was very rude and pushy, didn't offer any other options, and treated me like if I didn't get this done, I didn't care about my children. Needless to say, I left in tears. I was never shown an itemized bill for the visit yesterday, just told a price. 10/10 do not recommend, especially if you don't have Medicaid/dental insurance, and thousands laying around for them to poach off of you by guilting and bullying. read more

Do not under any circumstances if you are a family of color take your child/ren to this dentist. They are ridiculously slow and over book people which has the kids young and older, waiting for hours. On top of this the dentist Dr. Johnson doesn't take the time to speak with parents even when you request to speak with her about your child. I truly believe if you are a minority and have non commercial insurance they do not prefer your business. I'm glad to never go back to this office and I hope others heed my warning. If I could give zero stars I would, by far worst experience I've had with a dentist period! My 2 year olds doctor (Dr. Johnson) was very rude and un-compassionate, giving me absolutely no hope to salvage my 2 year olds front 2 teeth. Long story short, my son fell and chipped a tooth, she didn't give me any options besides removing not only the chipped tooth but both due to the "tooth being dead Bc the nerve was exposed for too long". Giving me only two options with removing both teeth or getting a root canal and paying 400$ for a crown that "may not stay on but I'm still responsible for paying".. Mind you he's 2 years old. My issue is not with my son chipping his tooth, but her attitude when she had told me bothered me very much, very nonchalantly saying it needs to be removed ASAP before it decaying not explaining anything, and just leaves! Her assistant explained everything which bothered me Bc he wasn't the doctor (but very helpful) and I wanted to ask questions being very upset about my 2 year old losing his 2 front teeth. No care at all!! I definitely think as a pediatric dentist the doctor should be more compassionate and hands on with the patient and parent! P.s hoping that this message gets to the office or the doctor, I would like to inform them that I did see another doctor immediately the next day and his tooth was perfectly fine (not dead and definitely not decaying) and they weren't trying to push me to pay for a root canal, crown, or anything else. Dr. Johnson was one of my first experiences at the dentist as a child 18 years ago. I was one of those "tricky little, anxious children" that she talks about on her website. Over time I requested that parent be allowed to sit with me and that request was repeatedly denied until my parents demanded that they be allowed to see what was happening, but I still couldn't see them during the treatment time. After that we never returned to her office. However 18 years later I am still terrified of the dentist due to the trauma of such an early dental experience at an early age. STAY AWAY! This office is full of scammers. My son was seen here in 2019 for an incident that his daycare said they would cover. Almost 2 years later, I started receiving bills for a portion of this payment. I called because he had a cleaning appointment scheduled to make sure the balance wasn't going to be an issue with his appointment. They assured me that it was in the notes that the daycare said they would be covering the cost of his 2019 treatment and that payment was not expected from me. I have no idea why it was taking them so long to collect that money from the daycare. So I took my son for his cleaning and x-rays. On the way out, they said I owed $142 for his visit that day. I was confused because I've never had to pay for a cleaning before; our insurance covers that 100%. I asked if that included that prior balance and they assured me that it did not and stated that the insurance wasn't covering the entire cost because of the x-rays. I shouldn't have paid but I paid $100 after triple checking that it was for that day's visit because that was about all I had in my HSA account at the time. The transaction felt strange to me so I called my insurance to double check and sure enough, I should not have been charged for the cleaning and x-rays. Insurance covered it 100%. I called probably about 10 times to get my money back, got the runaround and ended up speaking with Whitney (office manager I think) who informed me that they applied my $100 payment to the balance they didn't collect from the daycare and refused to refund my money. They obtained this money from me under false pretenses by saying I owed money for his cleaning and then kept it. TOTAL SCAM ARTISTS RUN THIS COMPANY! Used to love this office. I had been taking my daughter to Carolina Pediatric Dentistry since she was 2.(2003) They take very good care of my little one! She always leaves her examination laughing. I have only had one negative experience. My daughter needed to have a cavity filled. I requested a local for the filling. I *specifically* requested a local because I did not want her to incur any of the side effects of nitrous oxide . Upon checkout, I realized my child was given laughing gas. I was furious!!!! They were quick to rectify the situation after they tried to make me pay for the laughing gas but, they did administer laughing gas to my child without consent. Thank God she is not allergic. I know it was a minor oversight and my daughter is not allergic, I am sure it says that in her chart but, I was really upset. Prior to this incident we did have 5 years of quality service and did truly enjoy Carolina Pediatric Dentistry. Wonderful experience!!! My son is almost 5 and I was SO impressed with the way things were handled here. I left a different dentist's office feeling hopeless and convinced that we'd have to use sedation for everything including cleanings because my son was so traumatized. Today I wound up having to make an emergency appointment for him for a painful broken tooth and I found Carolina Pediatric Dentistry on Google. Immediately I was impressed. The staff here (ALL of them, but Jessica in particular) was so friendly and they took such GREAT care of my son (and me). They consistently kept me informed with how he was doing and they even let me peek in every now and then to see how well he was handling everything (without sedation!!) and calmed my own fears. They never made me feel like a bad parent for my son having cavities and I'm very happy with their treatment plan. I'd absolutely recommend them to anyone and we're lifetime patients now! Terrible experience here! Booked the appointment a month in advance and when we showed up on the day of the appointment we still had to wait an HOUR before they took my daughter back because they had overbooked the day. The hour wait time just gave my daughter more time to be anxious. I was not allowed to accompany my child back which freaked her out and the hygienist had to pry her from my arms while she cried for her life. When they were done with my child I never got to meet or speak with the actual dentist even though it was our first appointment. The hygienist simply accused me of having done all the wrong things for my daughter's teeth, even though none of the accusations were true. This place is the WORST! read more

I'd better give zero stars because they just REFUSED to treat my child. The reason - no vaccination. I asked how are these things connected - dental work and our vaccination preferences. They answered nonsense which makes the refuse even more offensive. They told me their pregnant patients can catch viruses from children without shots. Maybe it's just the girl on the phone doesn't know that any person with all the shots can transfer viruses. Or are all the doctors in Carolina Pediatric Dentistry this incompetent? Dear sirs, there's no threat to pregnant patients from kids without vaccination. Not more than from any other kid WITH vaccination. It is inexcusably for doctors not to know that. You guys at least should have chosen a more reliable reason to cover your discriminatory policy. I understand this is not about health. This is about peace of mind to some of your patients. This place is all about making money on your kid. My child always been a patient of Midtown pediatric dentistry but our insurance has changed and I took her to Carolina pedo and what a difference this was! She has never had no problems with teeth and her previous dentist never even offered x rays since he was experienced enough to see that her teeth are perfect and x ray would be unnecessary, explaining when a kid has milk teeth you can look around and between them to check for cavities. But at Carolina pedo x ray is a must no matter what and when I refused from it they said that my daughter has some problem with her enamel that developed in infancy and now she is at risk for getting cavities and has to have cleaning every 3 months. Amazing how her previous dentists never even mentioned such a thing. I'm writing this review just to warn parents to think twice before trusting this place. It is not good to put your child under the risks of radiation every 6 months if there is no obvious need for it. read more

Dr. Johnson was adamant about pursuing treatment for my son in a certain way, and when I politely requested a different treatment option, she refused and had one of her staff dismiss me and my son from her office! She even refused to see my child unless I chose her treatment option. That is so Crazy!!!! I have NEVER had a doctor or dentist not be open to a parent's decision about his/her child. Beware of these dentists. If you do not agree with their dental assessment, they will call child protective services on you. My nephew recently went to their practice and he needed a filling on one of his BABY teeth. They quoted my aunt and uncle a $6,000 bill. Their health plan only allows them to spend $1,000 per year and they cannot afford to pay an additional $5,000 out of their pockets. After being harassed over the phone numerous times by Carolina Pediatric Dentistry at Wakefield, the business decided to try and force my family to pursue treatment by calling child protective services and having a police officer visit their house. I don't think ONE cavity on a child's BABY tooth constitutes neglect of the child's welfare, do you??? By the way, it wouldn't let me leave NO stars. read more

As a parent you are always a little apprehensive when you first visit a new office. When I walked in the place (office/waiting area) was very kid friendly. As I checked in the receptionist was very kind full of smile and patience with any questions I might have. Both of my children were seen there together. My youngest was a little bit nervous but they did everything in their power to both soothe me and my daughter. I was a little worried so the receptionist suggested checking on my daughter just to see if she was okay. She did and said she was doing great. I appreciate the extra mile they go to just make sure the parent and child are happy and going through a pleasant experience. I like how after the examination/cleaning was done how they called me back to discuss in full detail all the work that had been done and everything that took place. To say that I am "happy" with the experience would be putting it lightly. This place is awesome! My kids have found their pediatric dentistry home at Carolina Pediatric Dentistry!!! Took my child here for her 1st dental visit at 4.5 years old. I am not at all impressed with what I experienced. 1st, the reception kept her back to the desk when I walked in, for over 5 minutes, and ended up sitting down until someone else checked in. If you don't know who is in your waiting room, you are completely understaffed or need higher caliber staff, especially with a playhouse for kids to play in the waiting room. The bathroom had urine all over the floor and the trash was spilling over. Feminine hygiene items were visible in the trash (get a separate container for the wall)! The dentist did not have the courtesy to come introduce himself before he saw my daughter. It was unsettling to sit there not knowing who exactly was touching my daughter or checking her out, and no, I do not trust adults as I have seen plenty of poor judgement in the daycare and medical/dental settings. There are 2 doors between the waiting room and room where they examine the kids. There is nothing more that I hate than for a business to prevent a parent from hearing or seeing their child when they are at the "impressionable" age. Basically, well behaved children are punished for the misbehaving children. The receptionist threw a lot of papers at me wanting to sign various documents for wrapping my child up during exam, medication, etc. I can't think of a worse way to introduce a young child and their parent to "Pediatric" dentistry by demanding excessive information without explaining why one needs the information. No one needs your social security number, Never hand that out! Thankfully, my child had no cavities and I have a chance to look for other practices. I have called around and it seems that splitting up the parent/child for everything is common in this pediatric setting for this area. Even the state insurance division strongly suggests that a parent stay with a child during their exam. For the record, I have worked in Pediatric clinics and NEVER would we separate the child from the parent, except for an Xray, if it put the parent at risk. In fact, there were several Pediatricians that I did have to report for excessive force, so don't blindly trust anyone, make them earn your trust. A professional would know how to work with the parent present for young children. In fact, there was a boy there bleeding that freaked my child out. Had I been there to try to discuss the situation to her, she would have likely not thought of it as a scary situation. I strongly suggest you consider going elsewhere if you care about your child's best interest. read more

We have been going to Dr. Johnson for 10 years starting when my 13 year old daughter was 3. She was fantastic for my daughter who doesn't have any special needs. Dr. Johnson was great about watching the irregular growth of her jaw. Looking back there was A LOT of teeth pulling and nitrous going on but my friend worked there so I trusted all was well. My 13 year old now has a beautiful smile. My 8 year old boy started when he was 3 as well. He was good for awhile when he was allowed to go back with his sister. My son has selective mutism and anxiety. He recently needed a spacer so he had to go back on his own and we have been going monthly to check up on his spacer. Last month he came out crying and seemed traumatized all week. He said he tried to scream out for me but couldn't. I contacted the office to say I needed to be by his side at the next appointment because of his disorders and they seemed fine. I went back with him today and he had a panic attack. We refused nitrous because it makes him feel sick. He just needed a sealant but had the panic attack. She blamed me for coming back with him first, and then secondly for not forcing the nitrous. He was crying and freaking out and I was crying and defending my position. I refused the rest of the treatment and offered to pay her for her time. She it wasn't about the money but I was reinforcing his behavior that would be detrimental down the road. Selective mutism is difficult to work with and the worst thing I could have done was restrain him during a panic attack. I'm so disappointed. I had planned to stay there forever. She let me know she was the professional and I reminded her that I'm his parent. The assistant tried to have me exit the BACK door. the 40 or so times I've been there I've never been assisted to the back door. We are now looking for a dentist who understands unique special needs.
