This theater is a slice of history! I would choose it over any of the big chains anyday. Why? Ticket prices vary between $5-$7 per person (depending on time of day) and concessions are even inexpensive as well. We paid around $3 for a small popcorn. The theater has plenty of seating and the staff are all so friendly! There are stairs so be sure to check the website which tells which films are being shown upstairs for anyone who has limited mobility. The seats are surprisingly newer & very comfortable. They "rock" or "give" a bit for anyone who likes to lean back instead of sit on what feels like a wall of bricks (like most old theater seating.) Lastly, parking deck is directly across the street if you can't find street parking. Enjoy your movie! read more

You're not going to find a better community theater than the Carolina. Over 80 years old, the theater retains that golden age of cinema charm while still providing movie goers with modern day digital projection and sound. I simply love going to see films here. Such a great facility. You're not going to see what opened in the multiplex that weekend. The Carolina is 2nd market and gets films a few weeks after they open in elsewhere. But its worth the wait - or taking the opportunity to see something a second time. And the whole family can enjoy a film without breaking the bank. At $3 a ticket, a family of four can go for under $20 and still have change for snacks (which are equally reasonably priced). The upstairs screen has stadium seating. Downstairs has the more traditionally seating but the chairs are super comfy and with the old school hardwood floors, I actually love seeing a film downstairs on the giant screen as its an experience rapidly fading away. I look forward to coming here every time I'm down in NC visiting my parents. read more

This is a nice, old fashioned movie theatre that holds true to the incomparable downtown hickory. It's also kid friendly which is an incentive if you have littler ones. You really can't beat it! read more

I have been coming to this theater for years. It's really impressive at all the upgrades that has been done over the years. The digital projectors, the digital sound quality, the pop corn and the pricing. You can't beat it. The most comfortable seats in hickory for a movie theater available. Don't pay attention to anyone saying something negative about this place. You have got to experience it for yourself. Much cheaper than the other places in town. They show movies here that has left the main big theaters then they get to show them at a discount. It's a win win here. Love this place and will continue to support this local movie theater. Very poor management. Booked a birthday party which was told it was $100. When I went to pay with my debit card they said it would be $120 but I could leave and get cash out for it to be $100. When you are with a group of kids you do not have the ability to just leave and get cash. They would not budge bit finally the manager/owner have me $20 out of his pocket but gave me a long winded argument about how he is justified and how we were in the wrong. Never brining my kids here again and I won't be back either. For a hometown movie theater fighting the bigger theatre they should be more reasonable and not putting blame in their patrons. read more

There's nothing better than the experience of going to see a new flick or to go see your newest favorite film , repeatedly on the " big screen ". Not talking about ur 55 inch plazma @ home , but rather on a theatrical size screen. And to see a film for under 5 bucks in this economy is a steal. The Carolina offers all of that. No , I'm not a paid endorser either. Just a customer. I've been going there since high school and I'm in my 40's now. The seats are comfy , the consession stands are cheap and the sound system is solid. Great courteous staff and they are the last of a dying breed that still show actual 35 mm instead of digital. When all the other " dollar " theatres have long closed , it's nice to still have one that's lasting and it ain't from luck. The Carolina is my absolute favorite place to see a movie. The recent investment in digital projection and brand new seats makes this theatre a true value. Even the concessions are reasonable. After spending $50 to see a "matinee" with my sons at the local multiplex, it was a welcome relief to the wallet to go to the Carolina. And the experience was even better! Love this place. Have been going to this theater for 24 years. Took the family to see Iron Man 3 yesterday. Ticket purchase was through the concession line. Ordered two drinks and 3 tickets. Was informed the credit card machine was down, we had enough cash to pay for the movie and they poured our drinks out. DSL internet in Hickory is backed up with a dial-up account, no reason not to accept credit cards. The lady at the concession stand was extremely rude about this. Overflowing trash cans IN the theater and a floor that looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a couple days, popcorn, candy boxes, drink containers under the seats. At the end of the film as the credits started rolling and we stayed because Marvel movies always have a teaser trailer, we were blinded by banks of floodlights. Something I have never experienced at any theater in the country. The lights were so bright after being in the dark for 2 hours we had to leave. I will spend the 2 extra dollars to go to the Carmike Cinema matinees with my family. 1 star is too many for this experience. read more
