Dr Smith has been my dentist for over 10 years now. I really love how clean and nice he and his staff keep the office. The staff is always the same and the hygienist is never rushed or trying to get to the next patient. Dr Smith is a very chill guy and pleasant to talk to and never do I feel anxious or worried about pain. The staff is good about never making you wait and I have honestly never waited more than a couple of minutes for my appointment. In a nutshell, the dentist strikes me as both competent and professional, but I can't say the same about his staff. Several weeks ago, I called and spoke to the receptionist (?) regarding an urgent care referral I received for a crown replacement (a crown Dr. Carr had installed six-ish months ago). I asked quite a few questions and described the issues I was experiencing because I wanted to know whether the dentist thought a crown replacement was a good and correct solution. I stated this specifically, YET I was assured my questions and concerns would be addressed on the day of the procedure. Fast forward a couple of weeks later ("urgent" care is not so urgent in a 4 day per week dental office) and, once I was able to pose my questions and issues to the dentist, I was referred to another endodontist to check for a specific issue the dentist thought might be causing the problem (I had already had two root canals IN THE SAME TOOTH elsewhere). The gist? The receptionist was wrong and my time was needlessly wasted. On the same day, as I left for the endodontist, I was told I would be contacted on Monday regarding the results. When I had heard nothing by Wednesday (now giving a whole new meaning to both "urgent" and "care"), I called and the receptionist informed me that "everything was fine," and that I should reschedule the crown replacement again. When I probed for more information (to understand what specifically was being looked for when I was referred out) I was met with misinformation, resistance, and disdain. Far be it from me to actually want to receive clarity and understanding in relation to an issue that I've been plagued with for well over a year. An issue related specifically to the crown this office/dentist installed. An issue that four dental appointments and four endodontist appointments (and 2 root canals) had not resolved. But, SURE, as a patient in pain, why shouldn't I also have to deal with a rude receptionist with a superiority complex? Makes perfect (non)sense. Anyhoo...she curtly ended our conversation with "someone will call you." Now, as I write this review weeks later (as I not longer fear poor service and/or retaliatory billing), did anyone ever call? You guess it: NO. small, but supportive quibbles: Don't expect anyone to answer the phone during lunch hour. Expect to hear staff gabbing/laughing while not checking you in--or acknowledging you in any way--during the same period of time. (I called a couple minutes prior to my appointment to let them know I might be a few minutes late due to an accident, but no one answered the phone. When I arrived, a couple of minutes after the hour, no one was behind the desk and several people were already waiting.) BOTTOM LINE: We all deserve kind, compassionate, professional, and comprehensive care from dentists AND their staff. Based on my experience, you won't receive such care from this dental team. Based on this office's limited days and hours, you also are much less likely to receive truly urgent care when/if needed. AVOID. read more

On a VA Community referral there are only two locations (in Austin) that work with the VA to provide dental services. The office (a competing dental office) closest to our home had already proved to be unreliable, so we crossed our fingers and opted for Carr and Smith Dental, which included a 24-mile commute. We have needed to make a few appointments thus far; the ease of scheduling, submitting new patient paperwork (all electronically), communicating via text, and squeezing us in around all of our schedules has been a breeze. Plus, the front desk staff is super patient in allowing my husband to defer the organization of the entire process to me and working around my schedule to make appointments. Upon handing me the business card, my husband asked me to "Yelp" Carr & Smith Dental, I awaited the negative list of reasons he could potentially provide. Much to my surprise he stated he liked this dentist better, he appreciated the front office staff, and that the 24-mile commute was worth it. He continued, that the front office staff was hospitable, kind, he enjoyed the "old-fashioned" vibe of doing business kindly, and the dentist/assistants knew what they were doing was nice, quick, and virtually pain-free. read more

I work in the dental industry, and have been seeing Dr. Smith for all my dental needs for about 10 years. He and his staff take an approach to dentistry that is conscientious, skillful, and intelligent. Other dentists push for additional (possibly unnecessary) services at additional cost. Dr. Carr was recommended to me by my old dentist in Indiana before we moved here in 1997. I am not blessed with great teeth and have spent quite a bit of time in Dr. Carr's chair over the years for new fillings, replacing old amalgam fillings, lost fillings, broken & cracked teeth, several crowns, etc. Dr. Carr has done a good job with all of these. He is also good at "waiting and watching" on potential problems to see if/how they develop. You can count on him to let you know when you really need to do something ASAP and when you can wait a bit. He is also probably one of the most personable people I've ever met. Dr. Carr's front desk staff is amazing. Ginny is so sweet and friendly and frighteningly efficient. They do insurance filing for you if you are lucky enough to have it. I don't think I have ever waited more than 10 minutes for any of my numerous appointments over the years. The dental hygienists and assistants are capable. There has been little turnover in the last couple of years. They seem to have their system down well and the office flows nicely. They go to some kind of dental seminar as a team each year, which is nice. Dr. Carr has some movies you can watch if he is going to be in your mouth working for awhile. He likes comedies. I saw "RV" while I was sitting in his chair. I would never have picked it but his recommendation was good: I laughed quite a bit, which is truly an achievement considering the venue. read more

I went to this dentist for two crowns. After trying to anesthetize the area 5 times, he finally gave up and said that I would have to go under general anesthesia. I've since had a very knowledgeable medical school anatomy professor tell me that if a dentist can't hit your mandibular nerve in two tries, leave the office since that means that he is incompetent. Carr actually told me that it was my "faulty blood chemistry" that was rejecting the anesthesia...that I was "too acidic." This was all traumatic and horrible and made worse by his mean staff. I couldn't have been treated worse. The staff are all the most miserable hags. Carr referred me to another dentist who works out of his office (Dr. Ersick...who actually owned the business before Carr bought it) and this dentist was able to anesthetize me and complete the crowns perfectly. read more

I came to see Dr. Bryan Smith a few years ago for a second opinion and haven't looked back. He recommended a much more conservative approach to fixing my damaged filling, and not only did it save me thousands of dollars but the fix has held up just like he said it would. I've been thrilled about that. The staff is really nice and courteous every time I'm in here. Everyone is welcoming, friendly and they do their job extremely well. We're self-employed and haven't had dental insurance for many years, but going to Dr. Smith's office isn't something I dread. Every procedure we've encountered, from cleaning to whitening to X-rays to filling repair, has been more than reasonable and fair. I have been seeing Dr. Carr for almost 5 years which is the longest I've ever stayed with a dentist. I really appreciate that he has never recommended a particular kind of toothpaste to me, or that I should be washing my mouth out with listerine or a mouth guard like my last dentist. I only had to tell him once that I liked the chip in my front tooth and wasn't interested in getting it fixed and he never asked about it again unlike a few of my other dentist that thought it was an affront that I didn't want perfect looking teeth (no I'm not British, but I do think Clive Owen lost some of his charm once he got Hollywood teeth). If Dr. Carr sees something off, he generally puts a watch on it before asking to do anything with it, so far I have not had to have anything major done. I'm probably even a bit biased about it since Dr. Carr always tells me my teeth are great and whatever I am doing keep doing it. I've also really liked his hygienists who have helped me not only brush better, but really taught me how to floss. Since I have been brushing the way Dr. Carr likes, I've had no more receding of my gums which was really worrying me. Dr. Carr can be sort of odd and funny. When he first saw the x-rays of my root canal from a previous dentist, he left a message on my answering machine that it looked good, but he would have done a better job. My husband also goes to Dr. Carr. His only complaint is about Dr. Carr's personality which is for my husband way to cheerful, goofy and talkative. I told him maybe he should see Dr. Carr's partner Dr. Smith who is a lot more solemn. read more

I have been going here for 3 years now. Everyone in the office are so friendly. The doctors and assistants know what they are doing. In the past my other dentist weren't caring towards my tmj. My husband and I have been going to David Carr (Austin, Texas) for over twenty-five years and he is BY FAR the best dentist we have ever been treated by. My adult children use him and their spouses as well... all VERY PLEASED! He is personable and fair. I first started using him as a second opinion after getting a very huge estimate from another dentist on work he felt was absolutely necessary. I went to Dr Carr without mentioning the estimate but for a well exam to see what he might find. His response was everything looks great... no cavities, etc. When I ased him about the teeth the other dentist had recommend a crown and bridge work for... Dr Carr. said he didn't see any problems with those teeth and no reason professionally to do anything to them. Like I said Fair and honest. When you go to see Dr. Smith and his team you will always feel valued and they treat us like family which is hard to find nowadays. Most importantly, his dentistry is excellent. First of all this for the staff or I should more specifically say Renee who works for Carr and Smith Dental. I had recently changed jobs and needed to find a dentist in Austin as my former is in Temple. On referral from my wife I decided to go to Carr and Smith Dental. My first appointment for a cleaning was in October of 2014, which went well. I scheduled for my six month follow up in April of 2015 and upon leaving the April cleaning, Renee informs me that I owe them money for the October visit and will need to pay soon. I'm thinking to myself, 1) I've never had to pay out of pocket for a cleaning because insurance covers it, 2) I never received a statement from my insurance denying my claim, 3) If I owed Carr and Smith for services, why did I not receive a bill and why did it take six months for them to tell me? So Renee tells me that I need to figure this out with my insurance provider. This was all annoying to me, her attitude and the fact that my work had changed insurance provider for the 2015 year. Anyways I get with my HR, get my old policy number and wait patiently for a half hour to speak to a live representative. Finally I get someone on the phone and explain the situation. They check the records to find that Carr and Smith NEVER SUBMITTED THE CLAIM! Okay, so I call Renee up and inform her of this and she tells me that she'll take care of it from there. No apologies or anything and it should be good from there. Remember this is in April. July comes and there's something in the mail from Carr and Smith Dental. I open it and what do I find? A PAST DUE BILL, which is from October and of course has almost tripled for "non-payment"! I immediately get on the phone and who do I get on the other end? You got it, Renee. I asked her what this is all about and she says in a snobby way, that my insurance refused to pay it. I tell her that she billed the WRONG INSURANCE! I had went over this previously with her. I told her that she needed to bill the old insurance, you know the old one on file from 2014, the one that you didn't bill in the first place? She continued to argue with me about it and finally I couldn't take it anymore and told her to cancel my upcoming appointment. Which she did and still no apologies. I hung up and got on the phone with my HR to handle the situation, which they did. What a TERRIBLE experience! I'll never go back. Not only does Dr. Carr and Dr. Smith lose a patient, they are losing my wife as a patient as well and her friend and husband who referred us from hearing how ridiculous this whole thing was. Poor guys probably won't even know that they are LOSING FOUR PATIENTS from this debacle. Renee probably won't even tell them and keep this whole ordeal to herself. I went years and years without going to a dentist and I've had to have some serious procedures on account of it. They've been great about it and are really making it easy to get things in order and to take proper care of my teeth in the future. I never have to sit in the waiting room for ages, which is important to me. Just as a side... Ginny at the front desk is awesome. Kind, friendly and sweet and terrific at her job. I have been a consistent, frequent patient of Dr. David W. Carr since 1977 - 30+ years. Without a single exception, on every visit I have been treated with the utmost professional competence and enjoyed the epitome of a sincere, caring bedside manner. Even when I first began seeing Dr. Carr, so many years ago, it was his practice to care about his patients long after they left his office. I cannot count the number of times he called me at home to see how I was feeling after a procedure and if I was having any problems, and he still does. I have phoned him late at night and even on Sundays to get advice or refills on prescriptions. I have never seen Dr. Carr without a smile on his face or genuine compassion in his voice. Beyond that, his entire staff has been equally caring and competent. His office is the most friendly medical office I have ever frequented, and I have frequented many over the years. I have recommended Dr. Carr to dozens of friends and co-workers over the years and all of them have later thanked me for sending them to such a wonderful dentist. I am not related to Dr. Carr nor connected to him in a business sense. I am just a very grateful life-long patient. read more

I was recommended to Dr. Carr from my chiropractor because a week before my wedding my jaw 'popped' and I was unable to close my jaw completely or chew. Initially the staff was friendly and so was Dr. Carr. I was told to take my Motrin and I was put on a muscle relaxer to help with swelling and once that went down, after a few days, he told me to come back after the weekend. It is the week of Christmas and understandable they are busy. But I was in pain and still not able to chew on that side and my wedding just that upcoming weekend. When I Finally got an answer Dr. Carr told the lady to tell me he was hoping the meds. would have helped, to stay on them and see him the next week. That is Not what he told me when I first went in. He told me he would be able to work on my jaw to get it back in place. So I was feeling, 'I am suppose to stay drugged up and in pain for the wedding??' He could at least have got on the phone to talk to me or referred me to someone else. But his answer I got through his receptionist was try the electronic acupuncture machine again (that initially did not make much of a difference). I'm sure he is good at some things he does, however clients trust on being able to depend on a doctors word when he says come back and he can do something. And also it comes across as less then professional and a bit scattered. Nice friendly staff, yes, and I'm sure he can be good. But my experience was lacking in professionalism and follow through, especially when one is in pain and a wedding coming up. read more

I have been going to Dr. Carr for quite some time. I was referred by my periodontist who was moving to another town. All the staff are wonderful and friendly. I have lots of dental problems and have been fearful of dentists since I was a child. Everyone here puts me at ease. Highly recommend both Dr. Carr and Dr. Smith. Dr. Carr is very personable and will keep you entertained while you're in the chair. However, I got 6 fillings from him (in ~ 3 months). Two years later, one of the fillings fell out (6 months after it was completed), and four more needed replacement. The same thing happened with my girlfriend, so I don't think it's just me. For cleaning, he's fine, but I would go elsewhere for a filling. read more

After reading some of the other reviews here, I felt it only fair to express my opinion. I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about when they post negatively about Dr. Smith and his staff. I have been a patient of Dr. Smith's for years and I can honestly tell you that I have NEVER had any issues. First of all, Dr. Smith is an amazing dentist. I have had issues with my teeth since childhood and he is the first dentist that didn't make me feel ashamed. He was gentle (never have even felt ONE of his shots) and conservative with treatment. And he listens to you! I never feel rushed. Plus, his nurse or assistant Kim always re-explained things if I had more questions. Calling to make appointments for cleanings was so easy! Kayley was sweet and friendly and worked to accomodate my work schedule. Then she offered to call me if they had a cancellation so I could get in sooner. Talk about customer service! The hygienist, Audrey, was very thorough and chatted with me when I asked her to help me keep me mind off what she was doing (I'm a bit of a coward). Renee is a SUPERSTAR with insurance. Mine was a bit complicated due to COBRA but it didn't seem to phase Renee at all. She explained the insurance to me and what my out-of-pocket would be. She was friendly and smart. Just the kind of person you want on your side if you have to battle your insurance. I've never had any billing issues with the office either. Anyway, I just cannot recommend this office enough. Even my aging parents who live two hours outside of Austin drive in to see Dr. Smith. You will not regret coming here!! read more
