The Doctor and Everyone there were all Very Kind and Very Helpful! And they got me in immediately to resolve my eye problem!

I had been going to this practice for several years when they purchased Adler Optometry in Chapel Hill. I have always had a good experience with the optometrists but have had issues with the opticians the past two years. Last year, my prescription was changed such that all the negative powers were entered as positive and vice versa. I had only discovered the problem after picking up the glasses late one Saturday afternoon and had to have the lenses remade once they figured out what the error was. This year, I went in and found out that they no longer supply Essilor lenses and coatings which are my preference. This is because I used to work for the company that makes the equipment that Essilor uses to put coatings on their lenses so I am well aware of the quality of Essilor's lenses and coatings. I was a bit hesitant but decided to get glasses anyway since I was there. They came in about 10 days later but I received a message that they didn't pass a quality check and they were being sent back to be remade. I got the final pair about 2 weeks later. I had only worn them 3 or 4 times when I noticed a small smudge in the corner about 2 weeks after that. I tried removing it with the cloth provided, then with the cloth and water, and finally with lens cleaning spray, always with the lens cloth. Since it wasn't coming off, I took it in thinking they could get it off but they said it was a scratch. To be fair, I did not have the scratch warranty as I've had glasses for 45 years and never had an issue and having worked in the business am aware how to care for them. To me, it seemed like a defect. The optician's exact words were, "Well, you didn't purchase the warranty so there's nothing we can do. Have a good day." And then she walked away. $650 for glasses . I asked to be dilated because I didn't want to pay extra for the machine scan and the staff ignored my request and ran the machine scan anyway. The eye doctor was fine. The real kicker was the $650+ for the glasses and that was after insurance paid some ($200ish). Next time I'll go to Costco or Sam's club. read more

I had my eye exams there, but the prescription is so bad that I can't wear the new glasses while working in front of computers. But my job requires me to use computers all the time. They offered a reevaluation within one month if the glasses are not good, but when I got back to their office, they said nothing is wrong with the prescription. So basically I got a new pair of glasses with all extra features - index lenses for high prescription ,transition lenses, blue light filtering, Etc. But after paying a lot for this new pair, I just can't use them. I had to continue to wear my old glasses. What a joke with their service! I would never go back to them. read more

For my son's first glasses, I tried an "independent" optometry shop in hopes of getting away from the racket of the big businesses -- and I still got ripped off. He simply needed lenses to improve vision, but the optometrist offered extra tests at extra charge. My usual concern is that unnecessary testing leads to unnecessary treatment, so I asked, "in your experience, how often has it turned up a problem in someone his age?" The optometrist was honest: never, in her career. In other words, it was a pointless service. The selection of frames come mainly from the same fashion conglomerate, at extraordinary markups. When ordering lenses, I noticed that the optional anti-reflective coating that was automatically added, more than doubling the price, and I asked whether the default coatings were adequate. The salesperson told me: "we do not recommend buying our lenses if you don't the extra coatings". That's my advice too: don't buy their lenses. Go to a shop that respects the customer enough to offer real options. read more

This past Tuesday, I went into Carrboro Family Vision to get my frames (which I had bought there) adjusted. They used a heat gun to adjust the frame, however they melted the glare protection (which was upsold to me during the original purchase) and now the lenses have a crazed texture. I have never even heard of such a mistake. Now I can't see out of them 48 hours before Thanksgiving. They said it was my fault because they are out of warranty. After cycling through 2 management levels and explaining to them they were at fault for 2 hours, they gave me a refund check for my lenses. However, they told me they wouldn't put new lens back into in my frames, which I bought there and are a little over 2 years old, effectively rendering them useless. Yes the check for the lenses was a move in the right direction, however they needed to make me whole again. In order to be made whole again, I need to have a no hassle pair of glasses on my face right now. I went in being able to see quite perfectly and left with ruined glasses. This all being said the doctors here are great, but the tech folks selling and adjusting frames have a lot to be desired. *UGH This is a edit made after the Doctor replied: I repeat the frames and lenses are about 2 years old. read more

The staff was accommodating and seemed friendly enough for me. With insurance I still managed to spend almost a grand for my husband and I. This included contacts, fancy lenses, sunglasses and a whole lot of upsells. We figured it was worth it. Long story short, the eye exam did not yield the correct prescription. I only realized after checking my previous optometrist's prescription and the old lenses were stronger! They were then replaced with a lower tier and I still had issues with one of my eyes. Afterwards I had another checkup and the prescription was slightly off but at that point I gave up. It's so awkward to go to a clinic multiple times in a month. My husband also had issues with the strength and essentially our prescriptions were useless. I guess if I was a previous patient they would have more information to latch on to and could progressively strengthen every so often. For a new patient, not so much. What does that say about their ability to give you the correct prescription if they can't do it themselves without the help of a previous practice? I feel that this was such a waste of money I would not recommend this establishment to anyone. I would rather see an MD/ophthalmologist and pay out of pocket. Lord knows it would be less expensive. My main point is that I went for a service and was not provided with adequate care. End of story. If my prescription from CFV was weaker than my previous one and I complained about my vision worsening, then objectively the clinic made an error and/or mistake. read more

But as a consumer I feel your staff does not have the customer at heart. $1092.00 without the sunglasses I wanted is absolutely outrageous. She was thorough, personable, and answered all of my questions thoughtfully and with patience. If you can afford it, definitely consider Carrboro Family Vision for you and your family's eye health. My first time here, 3 years ago, I had a fantastic experience and service. I returned in April 2023 to have my lens prescription updated in three frames. Exact opposite experience with salesperson/optical team member Ellie. No follow up or information from Ellie or their lab as requested, inability to solve simple eyeframe issues with manufacturer. I went somewhere else in CH that gave me excellent, uncomplicated service and there was no issue with having new lenses put in my Rudy Project frames. I had them in less than a week. read more

I wanted to register my complaint concerning Carrboro Family Vision. I recently broke my glasses. I called to see if I could get a replacement. They indicated that I would have to come in and get a exam and then be fitted for new glasses. I do understand their interest in making sure my prescription was current with my need. I am in a high risk category for COVID-19. I am astonished at their lack of sensitivity concerning requiring me to be examined and fitted. All I need is a replacement set of glasses. Terrible place. In my 15 years of wearing contacts and glasses, I have never had such a bad experience. My first visit, the doctor got my contact prescription wrong. Very wrong. I cannot recommend Carrboro Family Vision enough. Setting up my appointment is always a breeze, the staff and doctors are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, and everyone treats me like they would a friendly neighbor (which I am!). When I first started coming here I had some bad contact lens habits (not throwing them away often enough, using the wrong solution, etc.) Dr. Chow took the time to thoroughly explain eyeball anatomy so that I could better understand why breaking these habits was in my best interest. He treated me like an intelligent human, which not every doctor does. (BTW, Dr. Chow, have you ever thought of calling this lecture "Eyeball Anatomy 101"?) I've recommended multiple people to Carrboro Family Vision, and everyone is more than satisfied. So, I have to say that while I agree with Kat. T that the prices on their glasses are a bit high, you pay for what you get--and what I mean is that after going through glasses at Costco & another place in Chapel Hill that will remain nameless, I finally got smart and went to Carrboro Vision and got a pair of Silhouette glasses there that I LOVE!!! Yes, they're pricey--but they're absolutely worth it. And most importantly, it's the staff there--from the Opthamalogists to the receptionist--who really make this a fantastic practice. The customer service is above and beyond--everyone is extraordinarily friendly and honestly I can't say enough positive things about this practice. In particular, I have to give big props to Dr. Jason Chow--who took the time with me to figure out why I was having problem wearing contact lenses--and now I am happy wearing them! read more

Very impressed. I am vision-care veteran... I have been wearing contacts and glasses since I was 15. I've been through tons of contacts brands and eye exams and doctors. I've never really been thrilled with my prescriptions or experiences but considered it all a necessary evil. My contacts script expired so I begrudgingly made an appointment here, disappointed that I couldn't find a Groupon deal that would be cheaper than the $200 exam fee they quoted me. Well... let me say I am so glad I didn't go for a Groupon! They are so professional, friendly, accommodating and kind. I had the most thoughtful, thorough exam I've ever had from Dr. Misko. I was acting dismissive and grumpy about spending the money on yet another exam when I just wanted to renew my crappy contacts script, and Dr. Misko was totally unruffled. She casually offered to check my medical insurance even though I don't have vision coverage, and sure enough, she got my exam covered! A $20 copay! She also seemed to make it her personal mission to put me in a pair of contacts that I liked, not just settled for. She was doing tests that I've never had before, checking under my eyelids and my peripheral vision, advising me about sunglasses because of my light eyes and large pupils, reminding me to use a good eye makeup remover to avoid infection and dryness, etc... I was blown away. They even managed to find me BETTER contacts that are more affordable than the ones I was using, and I got a new pair of decent glasses for $99, lenses included. I walked out the door with a thorough eye exam, a glasses script, a pair of new glasses, and a free followup appointment for $200, which was originally the cost of just my exam. Every staff member I interacted with (probably 5 women total) was above-and-beyond friendly and accommodating. Anyway... these guys have earned the 5-star rating and I am really glad I went in. read more

I had a great experience with at CFV and will definitely be back. Dr. Chow was attentive and thorough in his care. When I described what my symptoms were, he elicited the nuances and got right to the problem (certainly a rarity given the rushed nature of most doctor visits). Ordering glasses was a breeze, and the woman who helped me was just as thorough as Dr. Chow, explaining each charge and what my options were; even nicer, she helped maximize my discount! Only con: the glasses were pretty steep. Perhaps this is because of my new prescription, but I'm coming from a state with a much higher cost of living, so the sticker price was a bit of a shock ($400+). But my surprise may be a result of the fact that I didn't use insurance (for the first time every); maybe glasses have always been that expensive? Anyway, that small negative aside--I could, after all, have taken my prescription to a cheaper place but decided to order from CFV anyway--I would wholeheartedly recommend their services. I've been going to Carrboro Family Vision for 3 years now. I found them through Blue Cross Blue Shield's list of accepted providers through my UNC student health plan. I keep coming back because they are very professional, knowledgeable, organized, helpful, and straightforward - exactly what you would want in your health care provider. I have received eye exams (for contact lenses and eyeglasses) and purchased contact lenses from them. Dr. Vizithum is diligent and knowledge. I appreciate his candor and attention to preventive health. When I came in for my annual eye exam a few winters ago, he noticed moderate dryness in my eyes, gave me prescription wetting drops, and had me come in for a follow up consultation. It was extremely helpful because the dryness was becoming problematic to daily functioning and work, but I would not have brought it up on my own because I thought it was an infrequent occurrence attributable to headaches and staring at the monitor too much. Dr. Chow is very personable, efficient, and professional. His explanations are straightforward and easily understood by the layman. He has exceptional bedside manner and a great sense of humor. Both Dr. Vizithum and Dr. Chow educate you on good health behaviors and they always clearly explain *why* you should practice these behaviors. (Like regular replacement for your contact lenses, why dilation exams are necessary every few years). I find it helpful because I need to know the negative consequences and the medical rationale to reinforce my behavior, haha. I'm very comfortable asking questions - it's because they're trustworthy providers. Finally, their receptionist desk is well-staffed with organized, knowledgeable, friendly personnel. Without fail, I've always been provided clear instructions on how my insurance works and all the requisite paperwork necessary to file my claims paperwork. I also request copies of both prescriptions and they provide it promptly. I've never had difficulty scheduling an appointment and waiting times are never long. The waiting area is clean and pleasant to sit in. read more

My first appointment here with Dr. Misko was fantastic. We have complicated insurance with a secondary benefit, and the staff had no problems with it. Dr. Misko was very thorough which is very important to me. I had to bring my 3-year-old son along, and they were very kind to him (I've been to some practices where kids are seen as a hassle even if they're being quiet). I'm taking all three kids (9, 6, and 3-years-old) back for eye exams next week. CFV contact lense and eye wear prices are very competitive, and I received a discount. I feel more confident working directly with my optician and ophthalmologist to ensure I'm getting the correct prescription and contacts rather than going through a web service or big-box store. My contact lenses are being shipped to my house! How awesome is that? Great practice! Great service! And being able to receive my receipt via email is AWESOME! read more

I really like this office. They make everything easy. The first time we visited was before we were even patients. My husband's wireframe glasses had gotten bent. Someone from the office was happy to adjust them for him and fix them up. My second visit was for myself. I was getting an eye exam by the very friendly and thorough Dr. Jason Chow. I don't have eye insurance through my employer so I paid out of pocket. Everything went smoothly for my visit. The next day, my husband told me that I actually had eye insurance through his plan (we had both forgotten). I called back the office and they immediately refunded me and charged our joint plan. So easy. Next, I ordered a pair of glasses through Warby Parker with my new glasses prescription. I got them and they felt really weird. I brought them into the office and someone from the glasses section spent a long time with me checking over the glasses and figured out that the focal point was wrong although the prescription was correct. Although I had not purchased these glasses from Carrboro Family Vision, they were more than happy to help me out. I sent them back to WP to have them corrected and now have a pair that work quite well. I walked into the office this past weekend to order my contacts. They cost the same as they would on 1800contacts and have free delivery. I was handed a rebate form as well and used my vision benefits to pay for a good portion of the contacts on the spot. I couldn't be happier with my entire experience at this office and will highly recommend it to others who live in the area. I've worn glasses since forever and have never had a doctor that I consistently visited for eye exams until I discovered Dr. Chow and the staff at Carrboro Family Vision. I've been in at least 3 times and each time somehow improves upon the last. On my most recent visit, I was given the option of forgoing the awkward dilation process and instead was able to get a digital picture of the eye done. It wasn't covered by my insurance but was worth the extra $35 to avoid feeling like my eyes are stretching out of my face. The woman who did the pre-screening stuff was fantastic. Super friendly, explained everything that was going on and what it did all while making casual small talk and generally being awesome. Felt totally natural and made the time go by quickly. Dr. Chow is the man and provided a thorough eye exam, as usual. It was a pretty routine visit for me, so it went by quickly and efficiently. He's the man. Definitely go see him. I didn't have enough of a change in my prescription to make it worth changing up glasses so I didn't visit the optical center. I did, however, buy two boxes of contact lenses for the 3 times a year I decide to forgo the glasses in order to wear sunglasses. They had my prescription in stock and it was covered by my insurance. Easy to make an appointment, everyone was extremely friendly (must be a Carrboro thing!). Did not have to wait in the lobby very long for my appointment, was seen within 5 min after doing paperwork. One my appointment (yearly eye exam) was finished the receptionist gave me a cost breakdown of eye exam and also cost of contacts with all my discounts (instant, insurance, mail in rebate, etc). She also gave me a sheet where I could cost compare Wal-Mart and 1800contacts. Carrboro Family had best prices and contacts will be here in 3 days, which is the shortest time I've ever had to wait for a year's supply. Will definitely go back for next year's exam. These guys are great - you never have to wait for an appointment and then are seen promptly when you're there. I particularly appreciated the care at the contact lens appointment, where I was able to try and test a couple of different lenses right there in the office at no extra cost, which ended up with me finding a pair that was miles better than what I'd been wearing. read more

Very professional and helpful office. I hadn't had an eye exam in a few years, so I'm not sure if all offices are adopting the technologies that they use, but they have a machine that tests...whatever it is that that annoying puff of air tests...without blowing air into your eye. I have really weird reflexes with my eyes from that test and I just CANNOT do it, so I really appreciate that. The doctor took quite a while to see me once I was in the exam room. I could hear her in the room next to mine, and she was taking great care to answer a lot of questions from that patient so I can't fault her for the delay. It seemed to be unpredictable. Had an easy time with the exam, clear communication from the doctors and went on my way to choose frames. That's where they really blew me away. The woman that they sent me to to get frames just seemed to "get" me, the first pair she picked up I loved. And she was great about getting me everything that my insurance covered. read more

A few years back I started having issues with double vision or "ghosting". After trying what my then optometrist told me - "mind over matter, just ignore it", I was fed up with not being able to see. And it made it hard to pull a 3 horse trailer. I found Carrboro Family Vision thru a referral from my daughter. Dr. Stiegemeier and Crystal worked together thru a couple of iterations and found i had a couple of treatable issues going on. Crystal recommended prisms and Dr. Stiegemeier spent a lot of time finding the right combo. They were both so patient when i had trouble trying to verbalize what i was seeing but working together and with additional tests, i can see - and only see 1 of everything! Life Changing!! For three years I have gone to Jason Chow to have my contact lens prescription adjusted and he is definitely the best optometrist that I have ever been to. I first went to Jason Chow to have my contact prescription improved and I was impressed that he took the time to fit me into contacts for astigmatism. He must have tried putting me in 3 or 4 different contact types in one sitting. I then wore a pair of contacts for a week and they just didn't feel great to me. Jason had me come back to the office and further tweaked my prescription (this second appointment was free). After all his effort, I eventually landed on a great brand of contacts that really improved my vision. On top of his willingness to get you the right prescription, Jason is just a great friendly guy and is easy to talk to. The staff in the office is also great and it is easy to book an appointment and pay your bill. I like that they use new technology and don't use much paper (they take notes on laminated-type sheets that they wipe off for each new patient after entering the details in the computer). Overall, this is a top notch place to get your eyes checked out (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!). read more

After changing vison plans I was on the hunt for a new eye doctor and checked Yelp out to see where to go. I treat my eyes as I treat the rest of my body. I don't frequent minute clinics at the local Target nor do I go to Lens Crafters in the mall. Carrboro Family Vision fit the bill for me and I was seen by Dr. Priya Joshi who has completed a residency in Primary Care Optometry and Ocular Disease. She was outstanding in giving me my exam to insure she provided me with a great prescription. You have the option here to have a photo of your eye taken instead of the dilation and that photo becomes part of your record to work as a baseline for future reference. The selection of frames here is about the same as anywhere else. I was able to find a handful of ones that I liked and that fit my narrow face well. The young woman who assisted me offered me color choices in the fame I settled on. Unbeknownst to her the color was discontinued. I did not find out about any of this until 10 business days when I called them to find out when my glasses were going to be ready. She went ahead and ordered me a color I did not want but was trying to find the ones I did. I would have preferred her letting my know about the situation before hand but long story short she was able to find me the frames we agreed on initially. Other than the delayed period to get my glasses, I was pleased with them and plan on using them again for my future vision needs. read more

I really like this independent, locally owned business ideally located down the street from me! It's not just the locale but the people that make the difference. I never feel like I'm just a patient, a number, a paycheck here. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly and take the time to make sure you are well cared for and happy. I have worn glasses since the 6th grade and contacts since 9th grade so I've had plenty of experience in vision care over the years and I can say this place does it right. They maintain a nice, family size atmosphere but have a very nicely stocked optical center to pick glasses from. Also ordering contacts was a breeze and I got them delivered to my home in 3 days. I saw Dr. V. and he was personable and provided feedback on my eye health, how to treat a condition I had and options for testing. I really like the lady that did the pre-testing too. She was incredibly sweet. I picked out frames that day and never felt rushed into making a decision and he also was good at making suggestions and letting me try on as many as it took. I like their selection. They have a good selection of brands and price ranges. I like that they have some really cool hipster (gawd, I hate that word) selections and some edgier styles but you could also find something more conventional too. I think it took about 10 days for me to get them. Even if I didn't live in Carrboro, I would still come here. Those big box places just don't have the same customer service and caring attitudes as they do here. read more
