We went to the Schoolyard to watch a hockey game and see what was going on here. Let's take the big…read morethree questions one at a time. First the food is very lacking. There is really only two choices, a mac and cheese place and Mikey's Cheesesteaks which I will review separately. Definitely need more options, not sure if they have food trucks in the summer or not, but need more. Let's skip to the best attribute, the ambiance. Love the old elementary school layout, with the courtyard and various little businesses in the old classrooms. The bar is in what I assume was the old cafeteria, which was roomy with various seating options. There was a couple guitar players playing which was nice, and prices were reasonable. Now the low point. The afternoon bartender couldn't wait to get out of there fast enough. We asked for the game outside on the big TV as there was nobody there but us. She told us to ask the night bartender as she was about to leave (not sure why that was important and she was there another 15 minutes before relief arrived), but we had almost an hour so we got our drinks and sat down. After shift change we ordered round two and asked for the outdoor TV as instructed, but in the meantime someone had asked for the basketball game so we got a TV near us in the bar. Whomever had requested the outdoor TV didn't even make it to halftime of there game, but by then I didn't feel like moving. Great history, great idea, just lacking in execution at this point. I hope things work out.

This is an interesting place with an interesting history. A…read moreformer schoolhouse that opened in 1871, the first public school for Black students in Seguin. It was made possible by the Second Baptist Church. It was called Abraham Lincoln School. In 1892 the school became part of the Seguin public school system. In 1925 the name was changed to Ball High School after its first principal and one of the founders. The school ceased being segregated in 1966. There is a sports bar here called Seguin Schoolyard (opened in 2024). However, the entire grounds are also known as the Seguin Schoolyard as they are an extension of the bar. This review is for everything because it's a really cool concept. There is a huge outdoor area with a stage that is kinda sorta giving Luckenbach vibes. Lots of covered and uncovered seating featuring picnic tables and deck chairs. A great outdoor stage for local and national performers. The outdoor space also has an outdoor bar for concerts. The grounds are lined with several businesses including a bakery, hair salon, art center for kids, cheesesteak shop, the namesake bar, shops, and more. What a great addition to Seguin! Heck, Paul Wall will be performing there in November 2025. The (indoor) bar itself is spacious and comfortable with bar seating as well as living area-style seating. The staff are super fun, friendly, and attentive. Family, kid, & pet-friendly.

On this days adventure I found myself in Seguin at the "Power Plant Texas Grill". But let's start…read morefrom the beginning, as you arrive you are greeted by an incredible view of the river and the restaurant that was once an old power plant (hence the name). Parking is little limited but on the side of the establishment is an auxiliary parking. As you walk inside you see the old power station. As you enter you are taking to your seat, either inside or in the patio area to see the view of the river. The personnel are very helpful and kind, they answer any questions regarding the menu. Now the food I choose the "Pecan Crusted Chicken" with a side salad and "Poblano Corn", there are many options for your sides to make it your choice. As far as the taste of the meal, it was delicious and outstanding flavors, I highly recommend this place.

Guests were having to come to the bar to check out, because their waiter was talking at the bar. Drinks were good enough. Nothing to write home about. Food was just okay. We spoke to an employee about the men's room. She blamed it on the fact there was no busser?!? Location is fabulous... it could be so much more. Word around town is, go check out the location, but don't eat there, service is horrible. Just a reminder to everyone in the service industry, YOU'RE IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY.

I usually stick with the cheeseburger while mixing up my sides. The cheeseburger is an absolute masterpiece. It is exceptionally juicy, packed with flavor, and seasoned to perfection, truly outstanding. To drink, I branched out and ordered the non-alcoholic dragonfruit energy drink, and it was so good! Vibrant, refreshing, and delicious, i definitely recommend this drink. However, as a self-proclaimed onion ring connoisseur, visiting a venue with "Rings" right in the name naturally raised my expectations. Sadly, these earn a generous 4 out of 10 at best. The batter is far too dense and aggressively crunchy, while the onion itself lacks any distinct flavor. For true onion ring greatness, the crown still firmly belongs to Clear Springs in New Braunfels. Service was a bit of a mixed bag. Our waitress started off wonderfully, engaging, and setting a great tone, but her attentiveness dropped off sharply as the meal progressed. We ultimately had to flag down another staff member for a simple drink refill because our server was nowhere to be found. Despite the inconsistent service and underwhelming rings aside, the incredible quality of the burger and drinks means I will definitely be back.
