I decided to stop into Carrs on Huffman for their $5 Friday deals and I was pleasantly surprised! First of all, I always find Carrs to be quite expensive but if you hit the right deals on Friday AND have the app on your phone you can walk out of there saving more money than you spent! I love this grocery store . Every time I shop here I am pleasantly surprised by how friendly and helpful everyone who works here is . The deli is superb , they have an array of very good burritos and sandwiches that are quite a bargain . They open early in the morning so you can get a burrito or a sandwich for breakfast or lunch . Of course they have a Starbucks so you can also get your morning caffeine fix ! This isn't the only place I shop for groceries because their prices can be higher than other places . But I have recently been taking advantage of their $5.00 Fridays and this might be a game changer . This is a pretty nice Carrs, especially compared to a few others in town. We rarely visit this store, however we do stop here to grab fuel and any last minute items on our way out of town, heading south for the weekend. I think it's fairly well laid out and easy to find what you need. The customer service has lacked a bit at times, specifically this last trip when a car was on fire in the parking lot. The cashier stopped checking out the lady in front of us to look at the fire and then the same with us. This happened multiple times and we stood there, waiting... waiting... waiting... easily ten minutes or more that we were there because she continued to be enamored by the fire across the parking lot. read more

This is just your average, typical supermarket. 2 entrances with a separate liquor store. If you enter on the right, produce with a mix of some organic foods and the pharmacy, right past a large floral section. Produce selection is ok - some finds tend to be a bit pricy and overripe. In the back is the seafood with some pre-made foods. There is a 3-4 aisle organic food area with a small organic frozen food section. The remainder of the store are your standard aisles, including an ethnic foods aisle. Toward the left side of the store (if you are looking at it from the outside) is the bakery and deli counter. Not a place I would run to for a fresh, hot or cold deli sandwich, but they do have your typical fried chicken and soup stations. They have improved their 'to-go' options if you need to pick up something for a lunch break. Bathrooms are in the bakery area - nicer than having to walk through the back storage room like some supermarkets. There is a Starbucks on one end of the store. It's ok. Good for a quick fix. Definitely not as good as a stand-alone Starbucks (and maybe even pricier). I haven't really had to ask staff for help, so can't really comment on friendliness or knowledge. Plenty of parking in front. They have a gas station which is well-priced. In the winter, they have a place where you can dump your Christmas tree which is a nice perk. If you shop here, make sure you use the Safeway/Carr's phone up which will save you some money. You can also sign up to get Alaska Airlines miles when you shop and discounts on their gas if you spend enough per month. read more

Well. At first I was going to say No. I would not recommend this location. I believe in giving people second chances. I've given this location numerous chances. The customer service from the management end is not good at all. The employees that work under the management however are trying and can only do what they can. I personally have had soooo many things that were missed priced with incorrect signage only to be humiliated by management saying well that's the price even though the sign clearly shows differently. But I continue to suck it up. They never do anything to make the customer happy and the poor employees are embarrassed. But my complaint now is 2 days in a row now I have purchased apples only to get home and find them rotten inside. I bring them back and nothing is done about it. Except make me feel bad for bringing it to their attention. Like I'm the bad guy. I shop here all the time because it's in my neighborhood. Fred Meyer has excellent customer service and produce and if there is ever a problem, no questions asked, they fix it right away. Like everyone else we don't have time to be returning apples. It's such a let down. Disappointing. I support this location but they don't care. I understand being short staffed with all the Covid and I have been very very patient. I think more people should take the time to bring things like this to their attention. Maybe they will start listening. I like to support locals. I do not like writing not so good reviews. Carrs Huffman is a pretty sweet store with a fantastic floral shop, bakery and meat counter. I just wanted to give a shout out to an employee there named Buddy. I had a birthday card and a gift card and was in line behind a gentleman who had about six months worth of groceries in his cart. Buddy was walking by, saw I had only a birthday card and took me to customer service, rang me up and got me out the door. Thanks Buddy! This is the easily the best Carrs in Anchorage. It serves the affluent area in town, so as you would expect, the store is spotless, well-stocked and has great customer service. Like most Carrs, the store has a bakery, liquor store, florist and hot foods bar. Even if this isn't your part of town, this is the store to go to if you're looking for a hard-to-find ingredient. You'll find lots of selections here that you won't find at other Carrs in town, including a lot of ethnic choices. This store is totally ab-fab. read more

This is one of the older Carrs around Anchorage. I thing they have done some remodeling of this location because it is better than some others I have been to. It one has all that you would expect of a Carrs/Safeway. I'm not a fan of the hot bar deli but have always received friendly service in all of the departments. I came by here a couple of days ago to pick up some groceries while running errands around town. This Carrs location is one of the largest in town located on Huffman just off the Seward Highway. The parking lot is always packed when I come down here regardless of what time it is during the day. The parking lot here is narrow and definitely a hassle during rush hour. There have been a number of close calls by speeding vehicles/impatient drivers coming in from the highway making the front of the store a hazard for people crossing the lot to enter the store. The store itself is spaciously laid out without feeling closed in like the Aurora Village or Gambell locations. However, the employees here have always been friendly and helpful and some of them have been working there for more than 25 years. The persistent issue I have always had with this place is the lack of product availability whenever I stop in to pick something up. Certain food, cleaning products, and bathroom supplies have been out of stock the last couple of times I came in. I approached an employee about availability and he offered to check in the back area. He returned a few minutes later saying that the specific item was sold out and that I should return next week when the new shipments come in. I did just that and went through the same thing a week later. Now stores like Walmart and Target would sell products like this at a lower price but the crowds are a lot larger at those places especially around 4 or 5PM. I won't bother to go into a crowded parking lot looking for a space close to the entrance or endure a chaotic wait at the registers of a Walmart especially if I'm just picking up one or two items. This particular experience was frustrating since they had buy one, get one free or twofer deals on the specific items I needed only to have those promotions end by the time the products are available. Product availability makes all the difference in the world if you want to get several errands done in one day instead of having to hold off for another day because of location or time constraints. read more

Maybe your grocery bill at Carr's on Huffman is higher than you expected because of the way Carr's prices items. I had two items I was overcharged for. First, Carr's advertised pork steak at $2.49 per pound but the packaged price in the store is $2.79 and that is the price I paid. Is this false advertising or an honest mistake? Second, Carr's had Nabisco crackers at $1.69 per box limit of 2 with additional boxes at $3.99 with card and $4.49 without card. I bought 4 boxes with card, in theory 2 @ $1.69 and 2 @ $3.99, for a total of $11.36. My receipt shows I paid $13.66. I do not profess to know what Carrs is doing but apparently the pricing built into their computer is different than their advertised price. The manager I talked to resisted refunding my money. She calculated the price of the pork steak and then told me I paid less for the meat than I should have paid. I told her with her poor math skills any price was possible because she did the math incorrectly. I told her if she would like to calculate the price per pound correctly she should divide the price I paid for the meat by the weight of the meat I bought and if she did the math correctly she would see the price per pound I paid was $2.79, not $2.49 as advertised. I was overcharged. The same was true for the Nabisco crackers. She finally refunded the money I was overcharged although it took her a couple of tries to refund the correct amount for the Nabisco crackers. Wouldn't it be reasonable to expect a manager to have basic math skills? It isn't the amount of money involved, it's the principle of being charged more than the advertised price. One has to wonder, were these honest mistakes or a deliberate attempt to overcharge? And why is the manager so resistant to refunding money when a customer is over-charged? Whether these were honest mistakes or deliberate overcharging, Carr's on Huffman is apparently not very trustworthy. read more

We stopped in after visiting out of town to get a few groceries before we headed home. This store is located just off the New Seward Highway and services a ton of people who are either leaving town heading south, or coming back home to Anchorage. We were there just past 11 p.m. My husband had to use the restroom before we shopped. The restrooms were closed. He asked a guy in an employee uniform stocking the bags of ice about the restrooms. The employee stopped for a second, looked up at us and said "Oh, yeah- the restrooms are closed." We stood there looking at him for a second, waiting for at least an offer to find the person in charge with a key to allow us access. Nope. So, we took our money to Fred Meyer on Abbott Road, just minutes away, who had open restrooms and did our shopping there. Duh. Carr's Huffman doesn't take care of their paying customers all that well in that regard do they? read more

Best grocery store in Anchorage, as far as I'm concerned. They sell these amazing cheese rolls - it's the first thing I want to buy when I get to Anchorage. They're simple but frickin amazing! Carrs is a great grocery store, and this is the one closest to my father-in-law's house. Not the biggest, but I really like it. They have all the food you could possibly want, even a decent selection of fresh fruits and veggies - important in Alaska. But they have several aisles of fun stuff, like Alaska souvenirs, books (including a decent selection of the Tundra comic books), toys and other funky little trinkets. There's a great floral section, good pharmacy, and excellent bakery and deli section. Difficult to have a raving love review for a grocery store - I mean, you buy groceries and you go home. But I really like this store, and I like spending time wandering around in it in addition to actual shopping. It's a great store - check it out! read more

It's hard to give even a one star. During the hard time, when you have very limited time to get out of the house and get necessities without too much risk, I finally got some meat (ground beef) and just a hand full of fruits and veggies. I did not have a bag, but the carrs staff "toom care" of me, by putting the ground beef on the bottom and everything on top. When I got home, 10 minutes later, everything I bought was covered in beef blood....so I need to say more?! Train your people!!!! This is a one-stop grocery store. Lots of selections and good prices. Lots of prepared food too. This chain used to be self owned but was bought out by Safeway some years back. But they have kept quite a it of their unique flavor. This is one of the few places where the baggers will actually carry your groceries out to your car for you for free, and don't accept tips for it. The prepared foods are quite good. It's gotten a little more corporate, and so I only give them 4 stars. read more

Like my previous yelper stated, this Carrs is one of the older ones in town and I do believe this is the headquarters of all the Carrs in the area. It is a good place to get your grocery shopping done or if you want to stop in for lunch. Fresh salad and fruit bars for your health nuts, and meats for your carnivores ;) I know in the Eagle River Carrs branch they have workers that will help you bring your groceries to the car. This is my last stop before heading out of town for a day trip or overnight to Seward or some other south from Anchorage destination. I usually get a juice, coffee, cheese roll from the deli, and a coffee from Starbucks. If I'm feeling adventurous I'll even get a maple donut or a bag of chips. The people are generally helpful and the store clean. I will definitely come again. read more

Recently, I was severely underwhelmed with the Bakery Manager and Assistant Bakery Manager. I saw how they were treating their staff and fellow employees, and personally, I just wanted to go back there and tell them how disgusted I was, because if there one thing I despise, that's a leader who can't lead and has no respect for his/her staff, and I know, because I am a business owner. I have been shopping here for over 30 years , and I am very disappointed with the customer service from the manager on shift. Carr's weekly add is spend $150 on groceries and get a free turkey . I have always done this with no problems . I forgot to grab mine so I called Huffman Carr's customer service and the lady said that's fine bring receipt and they will give me one . I went down later now and the manager Buddy hastily went over my receipt and said no you have dairy purchases on here and that doesn't count ! Pulled up the add and showed him and no where does it say anything about that . It says $150 on groceries. He said no! I told him when is dairy not groceries? Told him this is false advertising. He turned his back on me and walked away with no explanation. He basically just didn't want to give me one for some odd reason . Even the checker told me to go back when he wasn't there . Just sad to be treated like this after being such a long time customer...will be going else where. read more

This Carrs is a surge spot. It gets super busy at key times with folks doing small runs. When that happens, the checkouts back up, but then a little later, the place is a ghost town. That's why I dislike stopping there "on the way home" or on Sunday afternoon. Another pet peeve of mine is Carrs very dumb card slide device. First you have to tell it EXACTLY what you are about to slide, then slide it, then answer questions. If you forget to tell it ahead of time, prepare to start over. Most other places simply recognize if ANYTHING slid at ANY time is a rewards card, credit card (or do you prefer Debit?) or EBT or whatever. It's juts a pet peeve, but it's something they could fix with a software bump. read more

I'm new to Anchorage and Carrs suckered me into paying a much higher price for everything in my shopping cart because unless you look closely, the prices they mark in huge bold lettering in front of their groceries is only if you have a Carrs card. Also, I waited five minutes for someone to help me at the sea food counter only to be told he doesn't work in that department, he called for someone to come and I waited another five minutes, they never showed. read more

So the pharmacy needs work. I have given them a full year of monthly refills of meds for my entire family and they have been everything but accommodating. I was accused of cutting in line by a pharmacy tech then told to move back in line. (I had not cut in line.) I was mimicked by an actual pharmacist. She imitated what i said in a baby voice. I was stunned. This is only two examples. Both of these times they had made mistakes and i had come back for them to fix them. They often short my order, give me generic when my dr. has stated "brand name only." Then they punish me for their mistake with a poor attitude. i have gotten to where i felt intimidated going up to the window to ask for what i needed. I need to add that i have insurance and my order is rarely under 600.00 a month. As of today i am done. I will be getting my prescriptions from Ron's Apothecary in Juneau. They are fabulous and actually love customers. read more

I absolutely love the 'Baked Potato Soup' here at Carr's...it's so cheesy and loaded with big chunks of potato! If your body needs a potassium pick-me up, look no further! Plus this soup literally warms you up from the inside out on a wintery day. At $3.49 for a medium soup cup, grab some oyster or saltine crackers and slurp up! I usually can't wait till I get home and I sneak a few bites in my vehicle before leaving the parking lot. There's also a nice sitting area with a fireplace and tv where you can sit and eat, read the paper. etc. I also got to try a great cheese called Boursin here for a sampling. It was the greatest cheese ever and I bought the cheese and the crackers they had it on. Good store, I come here all the time. read more

Marita at the Huffman Road store is a floral genius. She designed and made the most incredible floral arrangements for my daughter's wedding. The arch flowers were incredible, the 4 different color cala lily bride bouquet was stunning and more impressive than anything I have seen at a top florist. I live in Florida, my daughter lives in Louisiana and we planned a beautiful destination wedding in Alaska. I've been shopping at the Carrs Huffman store for twenty years without incident until last Sunday, when I was very loudly and publicly reprimanded by the supervisor on duty named Mercy. I am 65-years-old. Last Sunday I was wearing mismatched work clothes, because I'd been working out in my yard all day. I was picking up a couple of tarps at Lowe's when my husband called and asked me to stop by the grocery store on my way home, which I did at the Carrs Huffman store. The last item on my list was a salad from the salad bar. When and stepped away from my cart for a few minutes to use the restroom in the store provided for that purpose. Mercy took my cart, then ambushed me when I returned, loudly and publicly reprimanding me, then continued to follow still shouting about the shopping cart. She even pointed me out to another employee in front of other customers, who had no idea what all the ruckus was about. When I tried to complain about her behavior, the only person I could complain to was Mercy herself, because she was the supervisor. That time, she laughed at me and then warned me that I'd better pay for those groceries before I left. My bill came to $214.05. I still have the receipt. I spend $10,000 on groceries in that store each year, which means that over the course of 20 years, I've personally generated $200,000 in revenue for Carrs Huffman, not including the money I've spent at the pharmacy. I filed a formal complaint, but received no response. BTW, there is no "shopping cart" policy at Carrs Huffman, and no signs either, indicating where shopping carts should be parked while using the bathroom, because I asked when I came back to the store with my husband the following day to complain about Mercy's behavior. There is no "shopping cart" policy at Carrs. Which means the only logical explanation for Mercy's behavior would have been my age and appearance. And, it's well known that women my age are going to need to step away from their carts to use the bathroom. read more
