The space has expanded since the building of the new Genoa Volunteer Fire Department (located next to the Genoa Courthouse Museum). You can still see the evidence on what the old Fire House looked like here. This particular building doesn't have as much historical charm as many of the other Genoa Buildings. However, since Gayle's Mom has been active here in local affairs, its a place that I've have the pleasure of visiting, both inside and out. And who knows how that might change if and when we decide to move here.....

I should have stopped by Payless ShoeSource, as they are closing nationally and have good deals, but I didn't have time. I have been here many time over the past four plus years. This plaza is located at the southwest corner of US Route 395 and Topsy Lane, just past Clear Creek Plaza and the Carson City limit. It is technically in Douglas County, but has a Carson City postal address, as it is served by that post office. It has two entrances on US Route 395, one entrance on Topsy Lane, and a back entrance on Vista Grande Boulevard (by Costco). It is also right next to Clear Creek Plaza to the north, on Topsy Lane. This shopping center has a variety of useful and somewhat higher-end stores than the neighboring Clear Creek Plaza. The stores are: Armed Forces Career Center AT&T Bank of America Bed Bath & Beyond Best Buy Bike Habitat Boot Barn China Jade Horse Cost Plus World Market Dollar Tree EyeZone Nevada Famous Footwear Farmer's Insurance GameStop GNC In-N-Out Burger Jamba Juice La Salsa Grill Marshalls Mattress Firm Maurices Michaels Panda Express Payless ShoeSource (going out of business soon) Petco Pier One Imports Play It Again Sports Qdoba Mexican Eats Roger's Carpet One Floor & Home Round Table Pizza Senior Care Plus Sierra Sewing, Quilting, & Vacuums Starbucks (with drive-thru) TeamClips The UPS Store Ulta Beauty Verizon Wireless There used to be a Claire's, Quiznos, and Styles for Less here, but they closed. It is a clean and well-maintained plaza, with just a few vacancies. The views from this plaza are also spectacular, as you can see the mountains on the west end and hills and desert on the east end.

I parked across the street in the public parking lot…read moreat North Stewart Street and East 2nd Street, and got to use a flashing crosswalk indicator for the first time ever! It worked, as everyone stopped right away for me. There was also available (and free) street parking closer, next to the park, on East King Street. This building is amazing. You first climb the stairs on North Stewart Street, and enter a grand entry hall, with a few carrels and a book return at one end and a view of the Capitol grounds at the rear. The library itself is to the right, and is open from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday. There is a librarian at the front who is very helpful. They take turns and there is a new librarian every hour. You can check out books with your Carson City Library card. If you want to do work here on your laptop, this is the place to be So much better than the Carson City Library. It is much, much larger, on two stories, with plenty of carrels and tables to work on, many by an electrical receptacle. There is also free, secure wifi. There are so few people here. I had the entire second floor (upper level) to myself. And the clientele is better. I only saw one person who may have been homeless, vs. many in the Carson City Library. I have nothing against homeless people, but I have seen them abuse services in other libraries (like taking to separate indoor seats for the day and not occupying either one, instead choosing to lie down on the picnic table outside). There are also public computers, which are available for an hour at a time I think. They also open at 8 AM, vs. 10 AM at the Carson City Library, which is more conducive to work. There are clean restrooms on the second floor. I saw a rock collection there as well, with Nevada Tartan Stones, on the west wall. There was a display of the original hand-written Nevada State Constitution as well. At the south end of the second floor, there was a spectacular view of the grand entry hall as well as a book monument that was shaped like an igloo. As I left, I saw a virtual reality station near the librarian's desk .You put on this headset and you experience something amazing. The librarian said it was open to the public. I went to the lower level (basement) to look around. It is just a collection of archives, which looks like a closed office hallway at first. The patron coming up said she was scared to use it at first, as the basement halls go on forever and look all the same. I agreed with her, and decided not to look around. Maybe next time.

While visiting Markleeville, we stopped at the library to use the WiFi, and later to rent some…read moreDVDs. The librarians there were GREAT! They insisted on signing us up for library cards even though we reside hundreds of miles away. We gave them some greeting cards as a gift on our last visit, and they even mailed us a little thank-you that we received after we returned home. They invited us to join the little happy-hour gathering of local businesses taking place in the back of the library and help ourselves to some snacks (we declined). I agree with Liv K. that the tiny adjacent park is a nice place to hang out -- I sat with my laptop on a bench with the sound of a stream running nearby, doing some necessary work in a lovely environment. This is real, old-school, small-town charm. The only reason I give 4 stars rather than 5 is that I didn't check out the book collection, and I don't think I can really provide a complete review of a library if it doesn't include the books.

The library has a decent selection of books for your weekend getaway in the country, plus free 24/7 wifi if you need to check-in with work or catch-up with your status feed. There is also a children's section complete with play area. During the hot summers and cold winters, head inside for relief from the elements as they offer A/C in the summer and heat in the winter. If you've had your fill of the stunning views of snow-capped mountains and wildflower-filled valleys, or you're worn out from the fantastic hiking, mountain/road biking, or long, leisurely drives along the mountain passes and need a different type of getaway, grab a good book and curl up on one of their comfortable chairs. Once in awhile, they have a book sale on the side of the library, too!
