Lotsa Yelp hate for Carvel?! This is a place I've been going to 25+ years. When I'd get my motorcycle tuned at Fun Wheels next door, I'd swing in for a quick cone. I had to get a part for my sons Jeep at Medford auto wreckers and I have my wife in the car with me. As I'm making the turn I say, Cherry Bonnet? She says, your sugars. I didn't have this problem when I was coming here back in the day. Damn your eyes woman! I pull in and get out of the case a frozen cherry bonnet. We have been going to this Carvel for over 40 years but will not be returning. We went to buy Flying Saucers and the 6 pack selection was limited. They had many flavors in single packs that we asked make into a 6 pack -- something that was never an issue under old ownership. They refused and said I would have to buy them individually. We drove to another Carvel and they had plenty of flavors in stock. We will be going there for now. read more

Horrible service... I've tried many times and they never get my order right... which is simply a soft serve cup with sprinkles on the bottom and the top.. every time i get it home there are no sprinkles on the bottom and i could probably count the amount of sprinkles on the top. Whole visiting my boyfriend's hometown, he decided to stop as his favorite ice cream spot!!! HUGE MISTAKE!!! After placing our order and paying for his ice cream cone and my raspberry sorbet, he was asked if he wanted his ice cream cone in a cup because the ice cream was very soft...HUH? I was so excited to try this new place and booooooooy was I disappointed... This service was HORRIBLE! I had to ask this guy 3 times to try a sample and then he tells his coworker to get me a sample instead of doing it himself. The other worker was in the back fixing something on her shoe and then came to help serve us and I did not see her wash her hands...one word: UNSANITARY! The ice cream did not look appealing to the eye at all...Some flavors just looked like goop while others I had to play the guessing game with because there were no signs of what flavor it was. The ice cream was expensive and not even all that good. My roommate got a coffee milkshake and he said it tasted like vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup??? hmmmmm i'm not an expert ice cream maker but vanilla flavored ice cream with chocolate syrup does not = coffee flavor! I found a Carvel that doesn't serve custard! We were staying near here on a recent weekend in NY and stopped because hubby love love lovesssssss himself a Carvel custard and we don't have any where we live. I ran in to get us some cones and asked the teenager for two small chocolate custards. I was shocked to hear that they didn't have any custard although he said they had lowfat custard. I called hubby to tell him they ran out or whatever and he said he didn't want anything if there was no custard but I had seen ice cream and had to have something. As he was scooping my hard ice cream chocolate/peanutbutter cone out I asked if he thought they'd have custard by tomorrow, hoping hubby could get his Carvel fix. His reply? "Oh - we never have custard". I blinked several times and my pupils whirled as I tried to process that. Wasn't Carvel primarily a place that served custard? I pointed to the custard machines and stuttered, "well, what are they for then?" wondering if I had gone mad? He looked then said "oh, did you mean SOFT SERVE?" My eyes narrowed, suspecting he was f-ing with me but it turns out he said what Rita's serves is custard but what Carvel serves is different - or something. But why was the lowfat called "custard"? I am still so confused. Maybe it's a regional thing (like soda vs pop, heroes vs hoagies etc?) but this was a new one on me! It seems he could have made a slight connection and asked if what I wanted was "softserve", I mean really I don't see a lot of difference between what Rita's serves versus Carvel ?? Okay Call me a hater but I had the worst experience here. I came in around 10:15PM because I get off of work at 10:00PM. I wanted some Ice Cream. As soon as I walked in the one girl who was going to serve me does a silent "OMFG"... Are you serious right now? You work in retail and you are no control over your actions? Anyways I let that one slide. So I was like Whatever. So I order a Nutella Banana Dasher. I've had this at many places, this is the first time I had it here. I came in at time of closing (They close at 11:00PM) so I get why their soft serve machine wasn't working (They were cleaning it). So she gives me hard Nutella ice cream. But nothing was supposed to be like the advertisement. This is the worst carvel I have been to. Never realized it until I went to different carvels. The ice cream is thin and watery. The workers do not care and don't know how to make Dashers, sundaes and sometimes even cones. They need training. I walked in the door on a Wednesday afternoon to see the girl with a bucket under the soft serve machine. I thought she was just cleaning it and emptying the machine. I ordered my sundae and she used the other soft serve machine. It came out liquidy and she threw some of it away. I went home and when I looked at my sundae, it was half liquid. I have never had a bad experience at an icecream shop. I cannot believe that she knowingly served me liquefied icecream. read more

This is by far the worst carvel around. The older short lady with the curly black hair is always bothered about doing her job. Always has an attitude, makes crap dashers which we get all the time and pay 9 bucks a pop for. When we ask for it to be made a certain way she replies with "well it's supposed to be made this way" We've been there maybe twice when she was not working and everything was fine, but she is always there. Definitely disappointed with my latest experience with Carvel. I walked in with toppings, sauce, and ice cream all over the floor. This lead to me walking stuck to the floor with each step. The servers seemed all over the place. My younger sister order vanilla soft serve with caramel. The cup was dripping with caramel on the outside. You couldn't touch any part of the cup without having caramel all over your hand. We asked for a new cup only to then be upgraded to a bigger size cup with vanilla soft serve dripping down each side...the server then left our spoons on a dirty table. When I asked for a new spoon she said I could grab one of the ones on the table. I paid, walked out, and don't plan to return to this location. read more

Typically this place fine. A carvel is a carvel, really. The customer service tonight however has me fuming. As I ordered a medium cone the messy haired unkempt employee taking my order felt the need to tell me "well the medium is pretty big you know." UM I DIDN'T ASK AND HOW DARE YOU COMMENT ON MY ORDER SORRY I'M SO FAT. Then this kid makes a point by overloading my cone and then saying the ice cream was too soft to make a cone. And threw it out. The other employee a very nice young lady told me there was no problem with the ice cream and I could have had a cone but at that point I had now waited for them to refill the ice cream machine and got my mediocre bullshit order and left. read more

Im giving this place a 2 stars because im basing my recent experience there. I ordered a medium size cup of rum raisin there. The kid who put together my order seemed very nice, but when I got home to eat my ice cream. I realized that my more than half of my cup is full of raisin!!! It seemed like that the kid just scraped all the raisins for me and forgot the ice cream part!!!! On top of that the ice cream does NOT taste like rum raisin at all! So I paid almost $5 for it was a total waste!!! I will not go back there, especially for the rum raisin...such a disappointment. read more

I have lived in Medford for over 12 years and been coming to this Carvel. The ice cream is very good. Every time I go to the store there are at least 1 or 2 other customers there at the same time (regardless of the time of day or time of year.) So I'm confused by these negative reviews. If it is so bad why are so many people going here? The only thing I can think is that people like to complain and don't leave a Yelp review to say something nice about an ice cream shop (heck it took me 12 years to do it!) Now I ask you to remember how you were at your first job, because I will say that over the years many time the person making my sundae was working their first job. That being said, if you are nice to them, they will usually do a good job for you. I do also tip good service because I DO remember how hard it was starting out. Tonight, I felt so bad for the 2 ladies working. When I went in they were being berated by a customer. The customer purchased a cake from another Carvel and was unhappy. There was not much they could do since the cake was from another location, but the way this man spoke to them was uncalled for. I give them credit for how they handled the situation, but he still left screaming at them as he walked out of the store. They apologized to ME for having to witness the incident. I will continue to go to this Carvel for the great ice cream and regardless of who helps me, I will always treat them with respect. read more

We walked in around 6pm and placed our orders, the black curly haired lady began to explain to us she did not have that particular kind of ice cream we understood and asked her can we have the same style ice cream with a different flavor. Shee began again to explain to us slower and staring like we were mentally challenge that she did not have that ice cream. Yeah, Idk about this one Yelpers. I went here last night around 7:00pm. I'm not so sure about this location. Service was apathetic... In fact there was I believe 4 people working the counter. One of the employees was assisting some lady pick out a cake. Another one was finishing up assisting another lady. The 3rd one was now helping my friend.. the 4th one just stared into the abyss. Never asked me once if I needed any help. Just stared at me lol. I even gave that awkward, "Are you going to help me or nah" look.. Clearly her blank stare answered for me... So waited until the 2nd employee was done helping the one lady and then he came over to me and asked if I was being helped. He then took my order and went to make it. Simple Reese soft serve with fudge. I watch as he goes over to the Soft serve machine, and it's giving him problems. So he called into the back asking for some tool, my eyes wonder over to the back and saw 2 people back there. One on their phone, other was drinking a milkshake. Service is always bad. They just stand there with blank expressions a lot of the time and are rude and apathetic (there are a couple of good employees though) but we went in last night there was only one other customer in front of us. The kid behind the counter just stared at us didn't say anything so we walked up and asked for 2 Oreo soft serve cones. The first was completely lopsided and looked weird. The second they could barely get out of the machine, the kid tried like three times to fill the cone before going in the back to ask for help then the lady gave him a spatula or something to stir it (which grossed me out I was already skeptical after the first cone went wrong) then he finally got it on the come but it looked even worse than the first all mushy and lopsided. We took them and dared to taste it in the parking lot and they tasted gross do we just threw them out right there. Horrible experience inside THEN OUTSIDE a group of kids on bikes wouldn't let us move our car and were heckling us and causing a ruckus in front of the store but nobody inside seemed to care so it was just a poor experience all together. That's just one bad example every time I go there we have problems. Corporate needs to evaluate this location of you ask me. read more
