Small restaurant close to University and shopping. Dedicated parking lot, traffic could be an issue during rush hour. Food and drinks were delightful. Ambiance good! Server warmed up to us! But the food was horrible! So I ordered a cheese enchilada with cheese and onions. Well I got sliced onion ( literally) in the enchilada! I was appalled that that would even come out of kitchen. The traditional way is chopped or diced onions in there not a sliced onion! YUCK! The sodas tasted funny! One time, the runner who brought my food out, threw my plate down and some of my food fell onto the table and she didn't apologize for it. A solid 3, closer to a 3.5. I ordered this through GrubHub, so the food is likely plated differently in the restaurant. The sauce on the burrito and enchilada was a bit thick for my liking, hence the tomato taste was overpowering. The ground beef was nicely seasoned however. We were seated immediately for lunch, but it appeared that there was only one server for two rooms with tables, so we waited. And, waited...about 25 minutes. Fortunately, the server was not harried. Quickly set out house made chips and freshly made salsa. Delicious! My lunch taco salad came in a flour tortilla bowl. The salad was fresh and tasty. My companion had Horchata with his meal. We stopped here for lunch on a Tuesday at 1:30. At first we thought they were closed. Two cars were all that were in the entire parking lot. When we walked inside, we did see one table of two enjoying their food -- but we waited five solid minutes with no one to greet us. We didn't see another soul. We may have left, but my daughter was using the restroom so I was waiting for her and by the time she finally came out someone from the kitchen had come to the front and we were seated. Have to say this was a real disappointment. We recently were in Iowa City to visit relatives and chose to dine at Casa Azul. The atmosphere was ok, but virtually every dish was disappointing: the sauces tasted like they just used a can of tomato sauce; and the tacos, enchiladas, and the chile relleno were all insipid. Years ago we were lucky enough to live near a fantastic restaurant in nearby North Liberty named Casa Azul. Sadly, it is no longer there...if they moved to Coralville and this current restaurant is a new iteration of the North Liberty place, they certainly lost something in the move. Patio delight. All the staples, masked staff. Vamos ahora! Haiku aside I have two tips, ya'll. 1) Breakfast is available for to-go and eat in -- Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 12pm! 2) That patio is fabulous, especially for distancing. There are several patio heaters for the upcoming fall! This particular day... Casa Azul was understaffed maybe? But it was nearly noon on a Sunday-- no refills, nearly an hour wait for food and my food order wasn't my food order. But, I'll chalk it up to a bad day. What can you do. Possibly the worst mexican food I've ever had. Everything tasted bad. The chips were stale, the salsa tasted really bad, I can't even put my finger on it. The pastor tacos were dry and burnt. The steak quesadilla probably saved them from 1 star. But all the other food was just bad. The rice was so dry it was almost crunchy. The service was ok, nothing to write home about. We hadn't been here since before the pandemic. It was great then and it is still great now. By far, this is the best Mexican food in the area. To start, the chips and salsa are very good that start the meal. The chips are fresh and the salsa has great flavor without an overpowering heat. They have a very extensive menu with lots of great options. My wife had the original fajitas. I enjoyed the fajitas creamy (basically cheese dip mixed into the cooked fajita meat and veggies). This is my new go to dish and I left craving more even though I was beyond full. The one drawback on the restaurant is that the margaritas are not very good. My wife got an original on the rocks and didn't even drink 25% of it. So, that is a flaw but the rest of the experience does a nice job of making up for that piece. read more

This place was WONDERFUL! We were referred to this restaurant by the front desk staff at our hotel, and they did not disappoint. We went on Conco de Mayo so it was PACKED. We didnt mind. Our wait staff was friendly and patient, explaining tobus what drinks they were making. The food was great. I had the Molcajete. While it wasnt my flavor (I wont order again as I'm not a steak fan), it was flavorful. Husband had the Carnitas platter and LOVED it. Margaritas were EXCELLENT. Traveling to I 80 we decided to take a break and have something to eat, we order a molcajete and quesabirria tacos and a couple of the specialty margaritas (casa azul margaritas) made from scratch with the tequila of your preference we love "don Julio reposado" not cheap but amazing, the food was delicious it took a little bit but it was worth the wait. Ok, where do I start. First, we were seated and never got menus, while another table sat after us and were given menus. So after 5+ minutes, I want and got menus. We ordered our drinks and waited another 10'mins to get drinks, then another 10mins to get chips. Yes we have the food but no menu, so you have no idea on price or what kind. So after another 10 mins he comes back and takes our food order, and said oh and I will bring you more chips in a little while. What?? Like what? After 10 more minutes another small basket arrived. Then came the food! Oh I wish we would have just left but here we are, they gave my kids some of the worst looking chicken nuggets meals I have witnessed. They nuggets were dark brown, appeared to be over fried. Then, my poor husbands quesadilla came, and it was so small for 11.50! I couldn't believe it, it was laughable. Then we get the ticket, $7.50 for kids meals! Bc mind you they have no menu! I mean the kids meal were not just nasty looking but literally the tiniest amount of food for $7.50! I really enjoyed Casa Azul! I normally go with flautas if I'm at a Mexican restaurant (y'all, GET THIS. It's a deeeep fried tortilla with chicken and topped with queso cheese sauce topped with that guac and lettuce and sour cream). But this time I tried molcajete! It was super good and had never had it before. The sauce isn't spicy but it's flavorful with that chorizo (Spanish sausage). Comes in a neat, volcanic rock bowl (casual) and filled to the top with steak, chicken, and a skewer of shrimps. Comes with rice, beans, and guac and warm tortillas. I didn't like the slightly burnt taste to the chips that came before the meal, but my friend did. It's just personal preference. What to try: molcajete, flautas Water rating: 9/10!
