By far the best place to eat in Portugal at least from the locations I've eaten at this far. I haven't been very impressed with the local cuisine but today that changed. The restaurant was very busy and we had to wait 20-30 mins for a table. I ordered the garlic shrimp and man were they tasty... like the best shrimp I've had good. The butter garlic sauce with lemon squeezed on top were some serious eats. Then the Torbo Cataplana came and almost made me forget about the garlic shrimp. The waiters are clowns who make the dinner fun. If you like spicy try the hot sauce that they only offer by the drop. Literally only give you a drop to taste it. It was fantastic I'm guessing a ghost pepper hot sauce. It made my dish even better. Great place and the restaurant next door although good was pale in comparison. Reasonable prices too. Try the house wine for 6 euro. We took one UPDATE: went back the next night and got the seafood platter. It was very good! UPDATE DAY THREE: we went back for lunch before leaving for airport. They open at 12 noon. We got the clams in garlic butter sauce and the seafood rice for one. It was the best meal thus far. read more

I went for lunch and absolutely loved the food here. I initially wanted cataplana but unfortunately, they only served in portions of two people. Hence, I ordered the seafood rice instead. And it was divine. The risotto-like dish was flavourful and filled with the most mouthwatering seafood. Service was pretty good. My waiter had a good sense of humour and was generally prompt in bringing everything. Ambience was cozy and very local. Alpendre was one of our favorite restaurants in Lisbon. To begin with the staff is fabulous - making jokes and making the whole dining experience a complete enjoyment. But even without the staff, the food spoke for itself. We started with our usual sangria - and it was quite good. For food - my husband had the garlic shrimp and I had the Melon with Jamon. For the melon, I anticipated sliced melon with jamon slices. What I got was this huge piece of melon that was semi sliced. It was gigantic and big enough for two people. The melon was perfectly juicy and complemented the jamon. I enjoyed it. As for the garlic shrimp, the garlic sauce was the best we ever had and we used the bread to ladle up each last dripping! For entrees, I had the crumbled pork and my husband had the hot stone steak. Wow on both dishes! The pork dish was huge - it was three thin pork cutlets paired with fries (I believe?). It was huge and very tasty. Needless to say, I could not finish it all. As for the hot stone steak - my husband was a little apprehensive about grilling his own steak, but the waiter showed him how to do it, and he mastered it. Paired with the garlic and two different dipping sauces, he loved all three large pieces of steak. The hot stone stayed hot and sizzling throughout the meal and it was definitely a highlight. After those large entrees, we thought we were full and done. However, our waiter showed us the dessert menu and we couldn't say no. They had so many uniquely crafted desserts - we wanted to try several of them. However, we decided on a nice glass of port and the taca whiskey dessert. I can't remember what exactly was in it besides whiskey and ice cream, but it was delicious - just like the rest of our meal. I would highly recommend Alpendre to you and strongly suggest you book your reservation now. It's not a large place, and the great service and food will cause it to fill up quickly - especially given the extremely reasonable prices. read more

FAVORITE RESTAURANT in Lisbon! Our last meal in Portugal was at Alpendre and what a way to end the trip! Everything thing we had was amazing and the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed! Our family of four shared the Seafood Platter - which was huge and able to feed 4-5 people, as well as the seafood with rice. Seafood was extremely fresh and the fish were cooked absolutely perfectly. We were blown away by the food. The staff also pulled a couple of fun pranks on us throughout the meal and it was just an enjoyable experience dining at Alpendre. Definitely recommended if you are looking for the real Portuguese cuisine or if you want seafood. I would dine here 100% if I'm back in Lisbon! read more

I have to be honest, this was my favorite meal of my entire trip to Lisboa. My husband and I stopped in for lunch around 2pm on a Saturday. It was full, but luckily there was a seat for us. The staff didn't speak english as well as most other places, but we didn't care. Everyone was very nice and had a good sense of humor. The food was absolutely fantastic. We had the mussels in garlic and onion sauce and they were the best mussels I have ever had. I had the grilled sea bass for lunch and my husband had the octopus. They were also the best we have ever had. The dishes are very simple, but they have so much flavor. Take note that there is no air conditioning, so it was pretty hot in there but its worth it. Dropped in here for a lunch late afternoon on our way into town to explore. After a little trouble finding it we arrived and were seated immediately! The servers were attentive and were very funny! They definitely enjoy the work and environment that they do. I ordered the fish of the day (a mackerel I believe) and it came out cooked to perfection! The rest of my party ordered a slow cooker pork, fried fish (similar to fish and chips) but it came with tomato rice on the side. They were both delicious from the small tastes I got of each!! The wines are on the menu but not worth the price if you classify yourself as a wine connoisseur. They are €3-4 bottles that cost that much per glass. Grab a large pint of beer instead on a hot day. All in all we enjoyed our trip to Alpendre and I would definitely return again if I was here on a lengthy trip. read more

Disappointing experience when we were here. We asked if they could accommodate to our dietary restrictions since our daughter has many food allergies. They said they could so we sat down. Then our waiter said that the rice has butter and that we should order potato with vegetables. I told him that our daughter is very picky. Could they do some kind of spaghetti in lieu of rice? He said that wasn't possible, just potato and veggies were the only option. He also looked angry and irritated when I told him our daughter is picky and eats dishes w rice or noodles. I told him that we had to go and he just stormed off without saying a word to us. I understand that they couldn't accommodate but what do they do with people who have food allergies? Make them eat potatoes and veggies? Also, did he have to be so rude to us when they couldn't accommodate? Lastly, they have a kitchen, they can't just make more rice without butter? They are just unwilling to make new rice for us, offering only the premade rice. The restaurant next door was super nice and made our daughter delicious rice with olive oil. They have a freaking kitchen. It's not such a ridiculous request to ask for dairy free rice. The rudeness really turned me off. It's not that hard to be kind. I wouldn't have been upset about not being able to accommodate had the waiter not been so rude. read more

The service is absolutely charming. The waiters, most of whom speak several languages, are full of humour and love to play practical jokes on their guests. We thought they were so sweet. But. This is a place for tourists, and tourists alone. The food is under seasoned and over cooked - the flavours simply aren't there. We ordered two main dishes that were served with the same sides in spite of being represented differently in their pictures (oh, you should never trust a restaurant that posts pictures of their food outside! When will I learn?). I was so surprised our airbnb hosts recommended this place to two people who wanted to eat like locals. I doubt a native of Lisbon would ever set foot in a place like this one. This is hands down one of the best experiences I had in Lisbon. Clearly very popular with locals and located in the beautiful alfama district. The staff has a fun demeanor and play cute jokes such as bringing us our beers and pretending it was a cappuccino. They served our beers in copper mugs.
