Decided to try a new restaurant on cinco de mayo and also because it landed on a taco Tuesday I ordered the 5 taco #8 special. Two of them. After tax and a credit card fee came out to $29. For 10 tacos seems ok. Carne asada across the board. 1/2 with onions and cilantro. Other 1/2 just meat. Service was friendly and place was nice and clean with ample seating. Not a fan of this plaza though. Parking is horrible and hard to get out sometimes on to Topanga. Esp midday. read more

A lot of restaurants are closed today for the holiday. I ordered food and was getting ready to pay. It went down hill from there. There was an extra $1 charge on the register. I asked about. It was for the use of a credit card. She gave me a long winded explanation of it. I'm trying explain to her that nothing is posted about the charge. She didn't explain to me prior to it. She did the same thing to the person in front of me. Didn't notify the customer. If she told me about it or there was posted information on it, I would of paid it. Never going back. read more

Yum! The 5 tacos for $13 is a steal you get to pick your meat with a few exceptions but I always pick the Al Pastor, Pollo, and Carne asada. It's enough to share too, two tacos are delicious! Came in for a quick bite the tacos durados were ok but the chicken soup was perfect for this weather. Excellent service from Luis. The free refills on the drinks were unexpected. It was overall a great experience I'll be back. Thanks for being open this late. My boyfriend and I were hungry late at night and were excited to find a Mexican food restaurant nearby that was still open. We ordered a quesadilla and several different tacos with different types of meat in each one. I'm very sad to say that these were some of the worst tacos I've ever had. The tripe tasted like crunchy dirt in a tortilla. I couldn't swallow it. The buche tacos were slightly better, but had a strange slimy texture and were very bland. The pastor tacos were the best ones we tried, but they still tasted slimy and old. But at least there was some kind of flavor in these tacos. I've never ordered Mexican food anywhere and not eaten all of it until today. This place serves shockingly bad food. I really wanted to love this spot. If you are a fan of hole in the wall restaurants don't care about aesthetics and super clean table tops this place is for you. They are a cash-only business with an ATM located inside. Reasonably priced menu items that are available 24/7. Did I mention that their carne asada was amazing. I ordered tacos and nacho Supreme. I'm not going to lie ... I think I probably would have been better off going next door to Yoshinoya. I stopped in and ordered an Enchilada dinner. It was a cheap, filling meal at $6.50. The problem was it was also hella bland and of perceptibly low quality (ALL of it - the carne asada enchiladas, beans, the rice, even the guacamole and sour cream). It didn't help that the large (machine-dispensed) Pina beverage that I also ordered tasted quite watered down. The folks that work here seem ok, I've got nothing bad to say about them. Parking was not hard to get, and I like that the restaurant is open 24/7. Perhaps I'm being unfairly harsh, and should try an alternate menu item. Perhaps I should give this place another chance. The cashier was pleasant and I felt welcome. Ordered two asada burritos, and thought it would at least be decent. Some of the rice was uncooked, meat was tasteless and hard to chew. I used to work in Watts, and I remember I could walk down the street and people would be cooking in their front yard, or at the gas stations all day until late night. Greasy, cheap tacos on small double tortillas, topped with cilantro, onion, lime and salsa. I've missed simple street tacos since moving to Oceanside 14 years ago. I was always sorely disappointed that there was nothing as good or better even though I was closer to Mexico. Flash forward to this place, and it fit the bill perfectly! Unfortunately, over the years the quality of their meats has gone down. I've bitten into a bone in the Pollo multiple times now and actually cracked my tooth once. And their once delicious Carne Asada is no longer juicy and flavorful, it is now rubbery and dry. Fun fact: when you walk through the strip mall door into Casa de Tacos, you teleport into a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Mexico. Not sure how it works, but it's the only way to explain how legit this place is. So, there are some conclusions you can draw from that: don't bring your uptight friends who think chain restaurants are good. Veggie options are not amazing (though I really like the veggie burrito, they aren't exciting). However, you also get: awesome pollo/carnitas/asada, weird meats (cabeza, lengua, tripa... they're all fine, but I only ever ordered them once, the other meats are just so good, and I am a gringo), authentic atmosphere, good pickled jalapenos, and great prices. I recommend drinking too much at a nearby bar (Casey's is amazing, but the Scotland Yard is fun too) and stumbling over here for some late night tacos. read more

Great deal considering how much food you get. The burrito was delicious. Came with beans, rice, carne asdad and some pico de gallo. Nothing fancy, just a focus on top notch ingredients and taste. At 12am, the place was packed. Clearly I am not the only one that thinks this place is great. It's a small little restaurant, but nevertheless the food is great. I think they are open pretty late, maybe 3 or 4am for those ending their nights out at a club. I couldn't understand why this place was getting such high ratings until I looked more carefully at some of the reviews and noticed one common factor - the reviewers were drunk. This place lost me at hello when I noticed a strong and horrible smell while I was standing at the counter waiting for my food. I won't get graphic, but let's just say it wasn't a food smell. It was dirty and grimy. People with unacceptably dirty clothes were coming in and out of the back, which looked even worse than the front. As I was leaving I noticed the "B" in the window. I wouldn't have come in if I'd noticed that on the way in. ( I once had a friend who worked as a chef and she told me the kind of violations you have to make to get a B. It's pretty egregious. You don't have to do much except follow the basic rules of cleanliness and sanitation to get an A. In other words...be worried if you see a B...or worse.) Once I have a gross-out come over me it is pretty hard for anything to redeem a place. However, the food did not look bad, and the money was already spent so...I soldiered on. Tacos el Pastor - not good. Beans - had one bite and couldn't eat more. Rice - okay. Side salad looked a little over it's eat-by date, so I didn't eat it. Horchata - just the powdered mix kind, but okay. I also had a candied yam - they just called it "azucar" or "camote", which I think just means yam. It seemed to be half a yam boiled in sugar. I didn't like it, and I'm a pretty adventuresome eater. I hate to hate on people who were so nice, and you know I love a dive, but the operative word when it comes to dives is "CLEAN". CLEAN DIVES.
