We started with a round of Ahi Tuna Toatadas and I had to have a second order! The tostadas are completely covered with the most deliciously marinated Ahi Tuna and are completely mouth watering! I been here several times as I live in the area. I always make my reservation on line with the comment section to be seated outside. It's been many many times where it's an issue. The outside is closed or they're cleaning to close. Mind you I come 90 min -ahead usually. Today I came in for a reservation at 8pm and they did not have my table ready. Came here to celebrate a birthday and take advantage of their happy hour. The drink deals were a great value, the staff were friendly, and they brought out a scoop of ice cream for the birthday, which was sweet. We didn't get around to try any food during our visit. Unfortunately, the patio experience was ruined by a rat that stayed directly behind our table against the railing for almost our entire visit. We had to be the ones to ask to switch tables to get away from it, and while the staff apologized, no effort was made to compensate for the disruption. Many others noticed the pest and either left or tried to get the staff to handle it. What made it frustrating is that I've sat on the patio at Gus's literally four feet away dozens of times and have never seen a single pest. The pest presence here isn't just "being outdoors"--it's a clear management and sanitation issue that needs to be addressed. Decent spot for cheap drinks, but I wouldn't sit on the patio again until they get this under control and train staff on better customer recovery. read more

My friend and I had reservations for 7 pm for a Saturday night. Once we arrived, we were seated immediately but to a super tiny table, so I asked the waiter if we can sit at one of the empty booths which he said wasn't available, which I thought was a bit odd since it was open. Anyways, once we were seated we got fresh tortilla chips and a red salsa which was delicious and on the house. My friend and I both wanted to tacos so we got two taco plates. I got the ribeye taco plate and she got the chicken tinga taco plate. We also each got the watermelon hibiscus margarita. The margaritas were the highlight of the night. They were well made and delicious. I could definitely drink a couple of them. In regards to the food, I enjoyed my tacos but my only complaint is if I'm being charged $20 for ribeye tacos, there should be way more meat in each taco. I feel like they skimmed on the meat, which I didn't appreciate, especially at that price point. Other than that, service was prompt and the interior was pretty. I'm usually not the biggest fan of Mexican food because it can be pretty heavy, but I really enjoyed this place. First, I have to mention Yvette. She provided outstanding service from start to finish. She was friendly, attentive, and constantly checked on us to make sure our drinks were full and that we had everything we needed. The food was excellent. I'm especially picky about guacamole because most restaurants don't season it enough, but this was one of the best I've had. I still think Chipotle has my favorite guacamole, but this was a very close second. It was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of salt. The chips were also great--light, crispy, and not overly thick. For my entrée, I ordered the chicken and shrimp fajitas. Both were cooked perfectly, well-seasoned, and served with just the right amount of grilled onions and peppers. I also really liked the flour tortillas. They were soft, fresh, and the perfect complement to the fajitas. We also ordered the carne asada skirt steak, and it was outstanding. It had a great smoky char on the outside, was packed with flavor, and was cooked perfectly. The only downside is the parking, but that's really not the restaurant's fault. The area is just extremely busy, so finding a spot can take a little patience. Overall, this is my favorite Mexican restaurant I've tried so far. I've been to La Popular several times for happy hour but never reviewed until now. Speaking of, the happy hour isn't bad, but it's not one of my first choices for. Anyway.... Today we went for brunch, our first time. Awhile back the restaurant mailed BOGO free brunch cards to households in the area, and since this was the 2nd to last weekend to use, we went. Came in a little after 11, not very busy (The Vineyards tend to get very busy later in the day on weekends) I order a Spicy Watermelon Passion Fruit Agua Fresca - it was good, but the Watermelon was so overwhelming it was hard to taste the passionfruit. My mom had the breakfast tacos (not pictured) which she liked a lot, I had the avocado toast and added ahi tuna. The toast may look small at first, but was very rich and filling. I will say I was surprised to see the tuna in lox-like strips, but maybe that's because I'm used to ahi tuna either seared or in chunks poke style. All in all, a very nice experience. Loved the happy hour here, where you can get good food and drinks for a good price! I came by to check out their happy hour Friday afternoon around 4 pm and it wasn't too crowded. Happy hour is offered daily 3-6 pm and 9 pm to close and includes both food and drink specials. They also offer all day specials on Tuesday for Taco Tuesday. I had the LP margarita for $9 off the happy hour menu. It was a pretty good margarita! We started with their complimentary salsa. I was very happy to find that it wasn't spicy but still very flavorful. I'm a picky eater and usually don't like restaurant salsas, but this was right up my alley. We then shared an order of their guacamole ($8.25 hh), cachetada ($6.25 hh), and a couple of tacos ($4.25 each). The guac was amazing as well, made with ripe avocados and just the right amount of salt and flavor. It comes with a giant plate of chips which were still warm from the fryer. I just wish there was more of it! For the tacos, I tried the ribeye, the gochujang carnitas (monthly special), and the regular carnitas. The regular carnitas was by far my favorite. The gochujang was okay but I personally found it too sweet, and the ribeye was a bit bland. I didn't try the cachetada as it was way too cheesy for my personal tastes, but I would recommend getting this if you like cheesy foods. And, even better is that a la carte tacos on Tuesday are $3 instead of the normal HH price of $4.50! Aidan was our server-in-training and, while he was mistaken that I could sub mezcal for tequila for the HH, he was lovely. He was attentive when needed and also let us girls catch up! What we ordered and thought: -Chips and salsa brought to the table. My experience at La Popular was simply okay. The ambiance is definitely gorgeous. The restaurant is well decorated. Where I fear they lost points was speed of service and in part, the food. We were seated for an entire inning of baseball on the TV before we were even greeted, let alone given waters. Roughly 10 minutes? I do want to say, our server was an angel. He was very helpful, patient, and nice. After putting in our orders for drinks, apps, and entrees all at once, it was interesting that our drinks came out much later than our appetizers. I had ordered the Maui mahi tacos. The tortillas of 2/3 of my tacos were basically mush. I ate one taco like a taco, and the other two I ditched the tortilla and made a little salad I guess. It's not necessarily that I had a bad experience, the flavors of the guacamole, steak chicharron, and my mahi mahi were definitely good, but other than that, it just wasn't anything to write home about. read more

My sister comes here pretty often and have been telling us how good it is and it definitely lived up to the hype. Great date spot, though they are also set up well for larger groups and family/friend outings. We've often walked in without a reservation and sat down without a wait. Service is warm and efficient. Stopped in here before going to the movies. I was excited to try La Popular due to the positive reviews on Yelp. Upon being seated, we were almost immediately greeted by our server Maria, who was very friendly and took our drink orders right away. I ordered the birria burrito which states on the menu right above that all plates come with rice and beans, so I assumed this was included in that category. I received my burrito with no rice and beans. I asked our server and she stated that the burrito does not come with rice and beans. She said she could bring a side of each anyway to which I replied, "that's okay." I thought it was pretty strange that a $19+ burrito did not include rice and beans but I accepted the fact. Maria ended up bringing a side of rice and beans anyway at no charge, which I thought was very nice until after when I looked up the menu and I was right in thinking that I did read that it came with those sides. The menu does in fact state that all plates come with rice and beans. Anyway, not a huge deal but the food is pretty pricey and I wish I could say that I would come back to eat here, but I felt it was very mediocre for the price. The burrito was just okay. Nothing too flavorful or memorable. Salsas were just okay too. The restaurant does have a nice ambiance for grabbing drinks. I just wish the food was a little better because I frequent the AMC next door weekly and I love Mexican food. Unfortunately, they missed the mark on the food quality for the prices they offer. Los Angeles county sprawls in every direction and so is blessed with dozens and dozens of beautiful, charming neighborhoods. One of these is Porter Ranch. I had not been there in a decade but decided to give a trendy restaurant, La Popular, a try this weekend. When we drove through the area, I was immediately struck by how lovely it is and the fact that it has developed into a major town. There is smart building evident everywhere. All the malls are well designed and pretty, and loaded with great places to eat and shop, some standards like Whole Foods and Mendocino Farms, others unique like La Popular. La Popular is located in The Vineyards, a terrific outdoor mall that has been thoughtfully laid out and landscaped. The parking is ample and there are places to relax outside with small playgrounds for the kids. There is even a water course. LP is huge and impressive as you approach and once inside, well, it is downright glamorous. The lighting is layered and subdued with elegant bespoke fixtures. There is a variety of seating from leathery banquettes to high top tables to a long and glittering bar. A patio outside provides shaded dining as well. The menu is wonderful and, as a vegetarian, I had to study it carefully as there were quite a number of items that I wanted to try. You can see the ones that made the cut, lol, in my photographs. Everything was delicious. Our server, Josie, was cheerful and efficient. Our dishes came out quickly and were piping hot. The tables are substantial solid wood, and the thick napkins and heavy flatware are tinted dark to match the overall decor. The effect is of an exclusive but airy club with niches for an intimate experience. All the building materials are high quality. There was an appealing mix of '80s/'90s music at just the right volume playing in the background, some of it World Beat. It is hard to think of something to change but one thing I would like to suggest to the owners is to offer beans that do not have lard. I love Mexican beans but all of them on this menu were made with animal fat -- not healthy or tasty. It can easily be substituted with vegetable oil. I had to do without beans and that was a major drawback for me. Other than that, this is a wonderful place for an almost perfect meal and we want to come back soon. read more

Came to "La Popular" this past Saturday evening and we were seated in the outdoor patio, luckily it was not actually outside and it was warm. Ambiance includes dimmed lights, pretty dark interior, loud and it was crowded that night. Out waitress was decent for the most part, except at times it felt like we were being rushed to place another order or what not. I tried the "queso fundido" (melted manchego cheese / served with corn and flour tortillas (+3 chorizo) --but it was not a hit on my page; the cheese was not as "stinky" as it could be, and it tasted plain. What gave it flavor was the chorizo's grease but not the best queso fundido I have had. 2/5 My friend decided to get a pineapple margarita (Chile Pineapple Mango Margarita Monte Alban Blanco / Ancho Reyes Chile / Pineapple / Mango / Lime) and I ordered their version of an old fashion "Oaxacan Old Fashioned" (Teremana Reposado / Mal Bien Espadin Mezcal / Agave / Bitters) For me, the old fashion was a hit 5/5 smooth and can taste mezcal in the sips but it was not overwhelming (yes old fashion made with tequila) must try if you are into these types of drinks. My friend loved this flavored margarita the best as well. We decided to order a margarita flight which was ok nothing spectacular on my opinion. It included flavors: Chile Pineapple Mango margarita, Watermelon hibiscus margarita and LP margarita. Once again the winner here was the Chile pineapple mango margarita. This place is good for drinks overall, we placed about three rounds of cocktail drinks and they were coming out rather quickly. I would have to give them another try as far a food goes. I love La Popular for their happy hour deals. They do regular happy hour, reverse happy hour, as well as all fay happy hour on taco tuesdays. They have a pretty good selection of happy hour selections: tacos, different chips and salsas, and pretty basic drink selections. It's never too loud inside that you can still hear whoever you're with for a great catch up session. Service can be a little hit or miss sometimes. Some days it's impeccable and other days you'll really have to intentionally flag someone down for water (the cups are really tiny as well). Pricing is decent and the food is delicious. The main plates menu isn't always worth it however the drinks, tacos, and the small plates are worth coming back for every time. read more

Dim lights and great for any occasion.... Birthday to date night. They have indoor and outdoor seating for dinning and for the bar. The drinks were good and they have a good happy hour menu as well. The bartender was very nice and friendly and gave good recommendations. They have a full bar but I opted to try some of their signature drinks on the menu. Although I cannot really speak on the food....(I only came for drinks)... the food did look delicious as the servers passed us by to deliver food to other tables. Now, although I understand restaurants have become quite pricey over the years, I cannot understand how this fajita combo plate ($34) is justified with a tiny piece of chicken and a tiny piece of steak. Insult to injury, it was served with two pieces of corn tortillas and one piece of flour tortilla. After making the manager aware of our issue, she simply told us to order more food next time. The only snafu occurred when my friend ordered a Marguerita and wanted to substitute the tequila with vodka. She was told there would be a $12 up-charge to do so (WTH!). She spoke to the manager who said he tried to make an adjustment in the system. His result was an $11 up-charge. Of course, she passed. It sounded as if the problem is corporate and local staff have little ability to make modifications. That's when it felt like the old La Popular -- inflexible. Still good food and a nice ambience. I first found La Popular in Porter Ranch through Uber Eats and decided to visit in person, and wow! The decor stunned me: low lighting, romantic vibes, perfect for a date night. Not even sure how to get around it. I debated parking at the hotel across the street or the Best Buy shopping center before getting lucky. Edm music throughout the night like you're in a nightclub. La Popular is located at The Vineyard at Porter Ranch, a classy shopping center with a cool nearby climbing structure for the young. Service was great here. Not only did they provide chips and salsa gratis, but refills were brought out with nary a suggestion from us! I had my first birria taco experience here, and it was great! In reading the menu, I thought two tacos a bit light in portion, but they arrived well filled with tender braised short rib and was served with a portion of Mexican rice and refried beans for $19. The spice wimp that I am was able to handle the limited heat from both the salsa and my lunch entree. My dining companion came away with a good impression, and didn't understand why it was under 4 stars on Google. read more
