Soup that came with Colombian lunch
    Julie S.

We had a really nice lunch at Casa En El Aire. We were driving around on Labor Day and thinking we'd have lunch at Franklin Mall, but literally, there are only a few restaurants still there, and they were all closed. This place is only a few minutes away, right on the Alameda near SCU. I'd been to this location in a few previous incarnations, maybe a bbq joint and Mexican place? It had been a while. We were pleased that this place was open and also that the menu looked interesting. We both ordered the Columbian Lunch special which I guess can differ daily. You start with a big bowl of soup, which was full of vegetables, noodles, and big pieces of chicken. Plus we got a beverage that was a lime-based juice with brown sugar. It was very refreshing. The main plate had a large piece of chicken pounded flat, with a delicious seasoning, plus beans, rice, and a small salad. It was a really large amount of food for about $16! We ate outside in front, they had a lot of seating both inside and outside, plus second floor seating. It does seem like it would be fun to hang out with cocktails as well. The service was fast and friendly.

First time trying Colombian food. I enjoyed the Bandeja with chicharron and plantain. It is the best I ever had ! Highly recommended! Service is great and I also enjoy the atmosphere!

Located by Santa Clara University, parking is non existent. There are a few spots and you'd need to pretty be lucky to get a parking spot. The interior is spacious and several tables to sit at. Petacon con todo (1/5): absolutely terrible. The quail eggs were cold. The pork belly was stale tasting. Plantains were ok. They were kinda thin and mushy and weren't too flavorful. There was way too much cheese making the entire dish really mushy. The sausage was good though. Not sure what was going on with the service. We were amongst the first people there but got served last. At least 2 other parties came in after us, and they got their food first. I ended up waiting 30 minutes for something not even edible.

I've seen this all the time, everytime when I'm at Santa Clara University. I'm in Silicon Valley today. Now I think I did great work covering Latin American cuisine, I've done Mexican, Venezuelan, Peruvian, Spanish, and Cuban. But today I wanted to do something different, I wanted to do Columbian. I'm here at Casa en el Aire this Sunday evening. And yeah, it does look like a Casa in here. I went with a Carne a la Plancha. I didn't expect it to look like this, this looks really good, big portion, slightly impressive Platter. I like what they did with the Grilled Beef Steak, it feels homemade. And I think I never had Fried Plantains like this, it's smashed, it kinda reminds me of a Plantain Sope, or some Plantain Chips. And I like what they did with the Avacado salad, the dressing is indescribable, but pleasant, and out of this world. I was thinking this was going to be a 3.9-4.3 stars, but I give this 4.3/4.4 stars. That's a high score.

Really good Colombian food for cheap! Worth coming here. Probably the best Colombia food in San Jose / Santa Clara area.

Cut me and my friends off from bottomless mimosas when we were fine and had twenty minutes left of our two hours. Food mediocre.

Every time I showed up it was closed. Never had their food. Cut to recently and there is now a Colombian food stall! Ironic yes? Now Ill have to tell my Colombian friend this even though they dont live nearby anymore. I will often make a sandwich or pizza run at the building next door but I decided to check out something new. I guess they are open normally on the weekend evenings but I happened upon a lunch special where they were serving Calentado which is rice beans chorizo and a fried egg plus a mixture of coal roasted/barbecued meats called picada. I'd had the picada at Juancho's deep in San Jose a while back so I figured Id do a comparison. Now with Juancho's it's a big restaurant and they have a large grill setup, plus the items are grilled to order as the flow is constant. At Patacom, they only have the one barrel with coals and it's 2 people working so they have to cook and keep it warm, so you dont get the straight off the grill freshness. However the pork and beef were both very well seasoned and had good flavor. I guess it would be best to catch them right at opening. THe meats also come with an arepa topped with cheese, boiled potatoes, yucca and plantains. So it's a pretty hearty meal. Id definitely come back and try some of their regular items at some point, especially if they do the bandeja paisa which seems to be the most widespread item I've seen amongst Colombians. And next time for the picada gotta show up right at opening!

The shrimp and the octopus was perfectly "cooked" in the juice. I felt the white fish could have soaked a little more. But it was great - I loved it. We also ordered El Borracho which is a slightly different take on the standard Arroz con Mariscos. there was an abundance of seafood along with the tasty rice. Lastly we had the standard Lomo Saltado. The beef was very, very tasty and really tender. Overall, it was a fantastic meal. The interior of the restaurant is kind of a standard strip mall restaurant. So don't expect anything fancy. The parking lot was small and full. But street parking was not a problem. However, service was wonderful. For drinks, we only wanted water - our normal. The glass mugs came cold from the fridge with ice cubes. Nice touch. The food did take a long time to come from the kitchen, so that would be my only gripe.

I decided to give Emelina's #2 an opportunity despite having some initial reservations about…read morewhether a restaurant operating multiple locations could maintain consistent quality and attention to detail. Unfortunately, my first visit only reinforced those concerns. I ordered the Tallarín Verde con Bisteck, listed on the physical menu as an 8 oz. New York grilled steak served with creamy pesto pasta. My girlfriend's steak was perfectly acceptable, while mine was composed largely of fat and was, for the most part, inedible. I asked whether the steak portion could simply be replaced. I was told it would take approximately 15 minutes, by which point the pasta would have been cold. I was then informed that I would need to purchase an entirely new entrée. The fact that I had touched the food was also raised, even though cutting into the steak was the only way to determine the extent of the issue. My girlfriend is Peruvian, and I chose this restaurant in the hope of surprising her with a well regarded local Peruvian dining experience. Instead, the quality of the steak and the manner in which the situation was handled made the experience feel markedly less refined and professional than expected. I left my phone number and requested that the owner contact me, as I am still giving the business an opportunity to address the matter directly. A sincere apology and a reasonable resolution would have been enough to preserve the relationship. As it stands, however, Emelina's #2 lost what could have been a loyal, long term customer.
