Wandering through many grocery stores over the years I have learned one lesson and that is uncut fruit is a risky gamble even at some Farmers Market. Yes I seen all the hacks about certain fruits which should be ripe but end up not ready for consumption. Then there are some which are visible like green bananas and green mangoes. These are usually found inside the chainstore grocery stores. There is one place for decades in the Mission District which has been offering one of the freshest fruits around in SF. It's located on 24th street and it's called Casa Lucas. On a Mission District Summer stroll I landed at Casa Lucas. Growing up in the Mission Casa Lucas has had a good reputation on having great juicy fruits. Although our family shopped at Safeway for groceries but the fruits were usually bought at Casa Lucas. Inside Casa Lucas you will see lots of fruits and also some vegetables. You also find salty chips and cheese like some in SF. This is a good place to grab those sweet juicy strawberries and mangos on those sunny days. I have been a loyal customer at this store for many years, but I have noticed a recent drop in cleanliness. The refrigerators are becoming quite dirty; for instance, the fridge holding the cold salsa shows clear signs of mold. Additionally, the produce quality has slipped. Just last week, I wanted to buy yuca, but the skin was moldy, which completely discouraged me from purchasing anything. Great selection of reasonably priced Latin groceries including produce, breads, cheeses (queso's), tortillas, cooking chocolate for moles, and canned goods including Goya brand ones. This is my first stop when I have to buy specialty ingredients for Latin meals. Best to have at least some Spanish speaking capacity if you need to ask the staff questions. I have shown them pictures and language descriptions and they were able to direct to where I should look and likewise, confirm if I brought something to the checkout counter w/o asking beforehand. read more

I've been shopping here since I was a broke 20 something. It is now not actually the cheapest place to shop, but it's still super reasonable, and it's conveniently located next to the Grocery Outlet. This speaks specifically to one Peruvian item. Due to the current pandemic I've been taking Zoom cooking classes. Different cuisines. The most recent one is a Chifa Peruvian dish. Chifa has Chinese origins in Lima Peru. Ethnic Chinese that immigrated to Peru. When I was in Lima several years ago, the local tour guide said Chinese moms would shout out to their kids to come in to eat. In Cantonese Chifa translates to "eat rice". I needed aji Amarillo chili pepper paste. The cooking class suggested buying it on Amazon. But hey I live in San Francisco where there are many diverse ethnic groups. Sure enough I did a Google. Awesome little market! They have quite the selection of organic everything in such a little corner store. Plus, they carry my favourite chlorophyll aloe juice that is sometimes hard to find and really good coffee brands. Its perfect for picking up some organic meat without having to go to large store or butcher. Such a convenient location too - near a bunch of muni stops to grab stuff for dinner on the way home. Been getting my groceries here for almost 25 years. I'll never change it whenever. I'm looking for something kind of rare. That's a Latino Product I find it the ambience here is so amazing. There's so many people of different cultures in there. The service is wonderful so much people go there that there's lines out the door. The food is great they have so much of a selection you'll never be disappointed I get my agua Fresca powder is there all kinds of flavors instead of using Kool-Aid it's more better than Kool-Aid. I love this market. I've been coming here from many many many years and I always find those hard to get items. It definitely isn't near my normal routes but if I'm in the neighborhood I always try to stop. And his last particular visit I needed some aged coconuts, really difficult to find in San Francisco or in the Bay area for that matter. They had a great selection. But on the other hand all the women that work there are the rudest I've ever come across, not one woman greets you hello says how are you or thank you when you leave, they sit and talk and gossip at the register while customers are just standing there, staring at them waiting for them to finish their conversation. Then when you tell the women something they get defensive as if the customer is in the wrong for wanting service and to be recognized and greeted. They have been poorly trained on customer service. I always loved casa Lucas since I was a kid I've been shopping there. I love supporting local stores in my neighborhood and community instead of bigger stores. I spend hundreds of dollars a month there. This has happened not just once but more than 10 times and I have been going there since I was a little girl with my mother me and my mother both have given up on reaching out to the manager who hires poor staff, and I will never give them another dollar of mine again. read more

They don't have many things my regular store circuit doesn't have (except maybe tomatillos) and they seem to carry only deli meat and no wine/beer. That said, Casa Lucas is a reliable market to buy an edited selection of fresh, well-priced produce and basic grocery items. Oh how convenient it is to live a few blocks from a Mexican market that sells pretty much all kinds of produce and a carniceria (meat shop) right next to it. I go here at least 3 times a week on my way home from work. I don't have to go anywhere else for my grocery needs. This place has it all. From organic produce to spices to kitchenware, Casa Lucas is my one-stop-shop when I'm too lazy to make the trip to Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. I like to cook so I'm always buying vegetables. They carry pretty much all the vegetables I need. And they carry 3 kinds of kale! That's pretty impressive for a Mexican market. Their fruit selection is one of a kind as well. They have Hawaiian pineapples all year round, manila mangoes, guava when in season, huge Haas avocados, an assortment of berries, different kinds of oranges, apples, pears, kiwis and different kinds of coconuts. I make a lot of smoothies and shakes so I'm like a kid in a candy store every time I come here. And their prices are fairly reasonable. The great thing too is that they are one of the few stores in the Mission that accepts credit and debit cards. The market right across accepts credit but requires a $10 minimum. I hate it when they do that. I never have any cash on me. An added bonus is that you get to practice your Spanish while shopping here. When one of the girls at the register asks "quieres bolsa?" you just say, "no gracias" or "si, por favor" and she will talk to you in Spanish the entire time. Just play along. The prices are also great and don't hurt the bank.....what I buy here will cost me at whole food 3x to 5x times more. The place is also clean and friendly knowledgeable staff. I laugh at all the hippie hipsters who buy their basic veggies at Andronico's, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. You can get tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber...ALL that shit here! For HELLA cheaper! I bought a pound of tomatillos, chiles, a pack of corn tortillas, a soda and two limes...all for $3.37. The soda was the most expensive item! I truly found Casa Lucas to be an amazing produce store! After having experienced price shocks for groceries in the city, I am glad to have discovered this little gem and saved myself from little heart attacks. (And holes in my wallet). For $16.93, it was well worth the trip from SOMA. I managed to get some really good tomatoes, green chillies (thai and serrano), plantain, onions, cabbage, tamarind(!), cilantro and a bunch of other fresh produce they were unpacking. That's all my veggie needs for the week since I cook at home... for 2 of us... which would have costed me like 30 bucks at Safeway or the pretentious & self-righteous Whole Foods. Service was excellent - I couldn't locate tamarind and they helped me by giving it to me in my hand. They have a ton of spices at reasonable prices. My world for our weekly food needs. read more

One of my new favorite markets! I usually venture out into the sunset to go to the asian markets on irving and 24th to find some good deals. I feel this place definitely RIVALS the asian markets. They have great prices, fresh fruits and veggies and some bonuses like dolce de leche cookies $1 DELICIOUS. queso fresco? you got it! Tamales $1.50 ish. Corn tamale is delicious, sweet and yum. Casa Lucas is the only place in the states where I've ever been able to find fresh Spanish Chorizo. I typically have to order it frozen from expensive specialty shops. Additionally, Casa Lucas is a great little grocery store with an excellent produce selection and plenty of fresh, dairy-made cheeses. The prices are fantastic and the isles aren't too cramped. Once again, I found myself craving pan dulce after normal panaderia hours. Given the size of this place, I figured they had to at least have some conchas somewhere in the shop. They totally did. The pan dulce was in a plexiglass shelf thing and I helped myself to a clear plastic bag and loaded up. Miraculously, even though it was pretty late in the day, none of the breads had gone that hard and the plastic of the bag helped to keep them that way well into the following morning- the ones I hadn't already eaten, I mean. There were a ton of people in line waiting to check out and I used the inevitable wait to look for a product that has been getting harder and harder to find anywhere: Planters Redskin Spanish Peanuts. i have a pretty bad habit of spending my money in ways most others might not--- i spend it: going to bars when i can afford that, buying my own liquor when i can afford that, cheap beer when i can afford that, and a bag of chips that sounded really great after the cheap beer... when i couldn't really afford the beer, bars, or liquor in the first place... THE HOURS POSTED ON YELP ARE INCORRECT. They are open everyday until 8pm (not 9:30pm). If you decide to call and verify, you need to speak Spanish or they will hang up on you (they are not rude, they just have no way to communicate with you). Great local market with a nice organic section. Very reasonable prices and the produce is pretty high quality. They have a butcher next door too. I found Lizano sauce here!!!! Hallelujah! I was really contemplating going back to Costa Rica or mail ordering it over the Net to get my fix. The front of the market could really attract more foot traffic if they open up a bigger entrance way. Half of it is blocked off by produce bins, leaving just a 2-person lane only. While I was squishing the avacados for ripeness, people were squishing me! They have an extensive bulk dry spice and chili section. I was estactic to find Mexican cinnamon in bulk. I really didn't need a packet of 5 sticks of this rarely used spice. If I only knew my chilis and how to cook them, I'd go to town with some rich mole sauce or a "hot flash" chili marinade. The aisles are pretty spacious and kept really neat. Cheese section is behind the counter and the cashier was more than happy to assist me. Friendly service and affordable produce here... too bad I don't live in the neighborhood because this would be a weekly visit. read more

I Googled/Yelped "Mexican grocery" and was lead to Casa Lucas. For the most part I was not let down (thanks Yelpers), here's why. I decided to go strait to the source, well figuratively anyway, when a craving for chips and guacamole struck that I felt my local grocery store could not appropriately satisfy (I can be a food snob every now and then). Although I left sans salsa-- though it looked delicious I don't love salsa enough to pay $4 for some-- for $18 we bought: - plantain flour - empanada wrappers - 4 small California avocados (4/$1) They also sell giant ones - a nice sweet, sour, and this is key, NOT stringy mango (I have low tolerance for string) - 1 Malta drink - thick tortilla chips - jarred cactus - powdered coriander - cascara - shredded coconut - a guava (it smelled like it might be sweet so fingers crossed) - and 1/5 lb of cacao beans ($5.99/lb) KEY THINGS TO NOTE: They have the largest selection of El Guapo spices (the cheap spices from Mexico that come in small plastic bags) I have ever seen! I sure can't find ground coriander from El Guapo at my local Lucky's, can you? They sell cacao beans in bulk and packaged! The packaged beans were $4.29 for a 12 ounce bag. I don't know what Rainbow charges for their nibs but I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that their prices are higher. You can buy any amount of fresh Mexican cheese (I think it was cotija) you want because it's sold by weight. My mom, who was just along for the company ended up picking up the majority of the items because she is South American from Guyana and was familiar with the items from home. The products there are pan-Latin. I saw things from Cuba, El Salvador, and Mexico, just to name a few countries. They sell Three Twins ice-cream, go figure! I'm not too familiar with this part of the Mission so glad I abandoned my original plan which was to wander aimlessly down busy Mission St. and found this little gem after a laborious internet search :) Overall, minus a star for not selling more than one brand of chicken tamale, fresh salsa that isn't almost $4, and according to my mom plantain flour that doesn't taste 100% like plantain. 4 stars for returning some childhood favorites and memories to my mom. Great store! Great selection of incredibly well-priced fruit and veggies. Goods seem fresher than other stores in the neighborhood as there is a speedy turnover of merchandise. Their selection of fresh chiles is unparallelled in SF. What really drives me over here however, are their frozen fruit purees. Certain produce is not allowed to be imported into the US but it can come in, if frozen. And because of how these are frozen, they do not suffer any for cooking with. This is where I buy Passionfruit purees, Peruvian Aji chiles, as well as a bunch of other fruits that I need to take home to babelfish to figure out what they are (Banana-Guava?!). Also a good stop for Dulce de Leche and exotic fruit juice concentrates. read more
