    Pain Au Chocolat

I almost don't want to write this review because Juniper is already busy and I don't want it to be even harder to get great pastries, but here we go. Juniper should definitely be in your top picks for San Francisco bakeries. There's so much hype these days on social media about pastries in general, but Juniper delivers. I always go with a Pain Au Chocolat on my first visit as my litmus test and boy did Juniper pass. I also enjoyed the Kouign Amann that my partner got. I NEED to go back to try more, and can't wait. I have a feelin' I'll over-order next time and take some to go. My only regret was not ordering more, but we were walking around and didn't wanna lug a box of pastries :) Would absolutely recommend - the line moves fast and the service is friendly. Not a TON of seating, but people tend to eat and move on, so you should be able to find a table for two fairly easily. Bigger parties might want to grab and go.

Came by a Thursday morning at around 8AM. There was a short line, but moved very fast. I was in and out in round 15min. I ordered a cubano croissant, almond croissant and a cappuccino. The cubano croissant sounded very unique and it seemed to be very popular, so I decided to give it a try. It was actually pretty good, although I expected it to have a bit more pork inside. The almond croissant was also very good, the dough was more flaky than buttery, but nonetheless flavorful. The cappuccino was good, the actual coffee taste wad more on the acidic side, but not super tart. Overall, would revisit and try more of their pastries!

Busy bakery on a Saturday morning but luckily the wait wasn't too long (~20 min). The bakery has a small crowded space for seating but typically turnover is pretty quick. We got the asparagus proscuitto danish, cubano, juniper lemon choux, and seasonal blackberry croissant. The croissants were all perfectly crisp and flaky - lived up to the hype! Wish the cubano filling was a little warmer inside when we ate it. Will come back next time to try more of the chouxs :)

No real complaints here. The space is a bit tight, but the line moved quickly when I visited on a Friday late morning. The coffee was fine, nothing particularly memorable, but the pastries were the highlight. The traditional croissant was buttery and well executed. I later got to try a few more items thanks to a friend, including the mushroom danish, which was a nicely balanced savory option, the banana chocolate almond pastry, which was pleasantly not too sweet, and a chocolate chip cookie with a great chewy texture. Everything felt thoughtfully made and well balanced. That said, my friend waited about 40 minutes in line for those pastries, which I personally would not do. While the quality is definitely there, I'd recommend coming during off-peak hours to really enjoy the experience without the wait.

There will be a line after 9am on the weekend even on raining days! Parking is difficult on Polk unless you come very early in the morning. All the pastries are baked fresh and you can even see some being baked right in front of you. The indoor seating area is very crowded. My favorite is the Sesame Kouign-Amann which was unique and I haven't seen at any bakery elsewhere. You can taste thick sesame paste. I liked the Chocolate Crossiant more than regular crossiant. Ariscault's crossiants are still more superior, but they have a lot more variety here.

This place has won a lot of different awards of best croissants of SF, so had to check them out. Better than most croissants, but prefer arsicault and b&c. Still very good though! Didn't have to wait in a line, so that was a pro. Decent amount of seating too!

Unassuming from the outside but decent once you walk in and see rows of pastries in cooling racks. We got here towards closing time so they were out of their hyper-popular Kouign Amann. Got the pain au chocolates, Raspbery almond and banana chocolate croissants. Didn't like the banana one too much but the other two croissants were very good. I get why this bakery is so busy.

Ham and cheese croissant, mushroom danish

We ordered four pastries-- pain au chocolate, which we both thought didn't have enough chocolate, the mushroom danish which tasted fine, ham and cheese croissant also fine, and the sticky bun which I thought was meh. We also ordered the Sister Moon coffee which was good and a chai latte which was meh. I'm always chasing a flavorful chai that I once had during college and this was fine, somewhat the same or worse than the store-bought teabags that I make at home. The customer service was very good. We ate in instead of walking back to our hotel. The cafe was very cramped and busy. You can easily eavesdrop on the person sitting two feet away from you.

This upmarket bakery cafe comes from the owners of Saint Frank Coffee, so I knew it was going to be a worthwhile stop even before I stopped by. I remember when this location used to be a middling roast chicken shop, and way before that was a rich LGBTQ history that included a major pre-Stonewall riot in the cafeteria that was here back in 1966. There's no evidence of that all these years later. Now the most arresting sight is the display of huge croissants. I wasn't hungry enough for the mammoth $9 Cubano filled with ham, mojo pork, pickle, French-style seeded mustard, and gruyere, but I indulged in the $5 Traditional Croissant, among the most buttery flakiest I've ever had (Photo 8). Along with my piping hot $4.75 Americano (Photo 10), it was enough for breakfast. FOOD - 4 stars...a satisfying combo of caffeine and croissant AMBIANCE - 4 stars...pleasant enough, crowds quickly SERVICE - 4 stars...attentive TOTAL - 4 stars...if size matters to you...and flakiness RELATED - Exploring Polk Gulch? The title of "best croissant in SF" is a big one. But after multiple visits here, I just really can't say that I agree with that assessment. Sorry, but I cannot lie. I actually think the choux pastry are the stars here, & they certainly warrant a visit. These works of art are as delectable as they are pretty. I try every flavor available & the lemon has been the favorite every time. I just couldn't believe how good this was. One of the best sweet things I've eaten in a long time. I want a dozen for myself! The Cubano croissant was a must order due to sheer curiosity. The croissant itself was superior to the fillings, both in taste and in volume. Tried it, won't be a repeat order. I'd rather get an actual cubano sammy from the deli. Parking pretty nonexistent. Our system is pull up, I hop out & order, he circles & picks me up. These choux are so worth it. 4 stars

In the quest for the best croissant in San Francisco I was referred by someone who said their favorite croissant was located on Polk street. I was intrigued by hearing that was awarded the best croissants in San Francisco in 2024. I was puzzled because I was not aware of the award. I started to wonder who their competitors were and if they as flakey as some in SF. The place I had to investigate their croissant is Juniper on Polk street in San Francisco . I am quite skeptical about awards and always find them subjective and if there are motives behind the decisions. I came in with an open mind . I first ordered their Raspberry Yuzu Iced Tea and it was not sweet but a bit tarty . I then ordered the traditional croissant. It looked good but wonder if they passed the flake test in SF. The croissant was delicious. It was buttery and flakey like some in SF. It was one of the best croissants I had in the city but not the best I had. It's definitely top 5 in San Francisco and a must try. This place is not the best croissant but its top "rank" that's "point-blank "provides coffee inside strong like a "tank"courtesy of coffee roaster "Saint Frank" It's a "must "this ranking I somewhat "trust"the croissant has a good "crust" it's flakey like in SF you can see the "flakey dust "

Make sure to try the choux pastries.

    1. I tried Juniper three days in a row while on a business trip. The pasties here are beautiful but more importantly the quality is excellent, consistent and they taste great. 2. My goto to when I try a new coffee shop is either a macchiato or cortado. Their cortado was consistently great. 3. The line often goes out the door but it moves steadily. And you get a chance to watch them make the pastries while you wait.

Black sesame loaf, ham and cheese croissant, 2 chocolate croissants, and a plain croissant
    Iris G.

Came here for the croissants and they absolutely lived up to the hype. The line moves surprisingly fast, so don't let it scare you off. If you're not getting coffee, the black sesame croissant loaf is an absolute must -- seriously delicious. Their croissants are buttery, flaky, and honestly taste like something straight out of France. Definitely worth paying a little extra for the quality. Would 100% come back.

I've gone a few times around 10-11 AM and gotten through the line pretty quickly, plus they've never been sold out of anything. Another plus of this location is its proximity to Golden Gate Park; when the weather is nice it's great to pick up pastries from here, find a grassy area in the park to put down a blanket, and have a mini picnic. My favorite thing to get here is the chocolate almond croissant, especially since it's fairly unique and not too many other bakeries do it. Everything is perfect from the almond filling, the flaky croissant, the crunchy baked almond filling on top, and the melted chocolate. It's pretty heavy and dense though, even when hungry I can only get through half of it. It's still good later on (even after a day or two) but nothing beats it fresh. I also like to get the plain croissant and their kouign amann. The kouign amann has the same buttery, flaky layers as the croissant and has this caramelized sugar coating that I love. Don't love their chocolate chip cookie - too much chocolate and not enough cookie. But everything else I've tried from their is so worth the drive over, line, and prices.

To get the best choice of pastries it is best to go before noon before some of the most popular items sell out. I was able to get Almond Croissants, Morning Bun, Kouign Amann and a chocolate chip cookie. My wife said they make the best almond croissant, not overly sweet and nice flakey croissant, she liked the Kouign Amann but she said B Patissere makes the best. The chocolate chip was big, soft in the middle with a slight crunchy edge, the cookie had a good sweetness balance. I was lucky enough to go at a time when there were a few porn parking spots. The parking can be a challenge but it is worth the hunt for parking to get some tasty pastries.

Even so, they were refreshing that pastry case so that I was not without options. So many amazing-looking things, so I got 3 things just for myself: Chocolate Banana Almond Croissant $5.25: The classic, I had to try. And it was so good!! I thought it might be too rich, but I actually found it to be quite balanced. I loved the fresh mashed banana/banana purée inside, and it went really well with the chocolate. I didn't get a ton of almond flavor comparatively, but I appreciated the coating on the top for a heartier crunch in addition to the croissant flakiness. Like everyone else, I would definitely recommend this one! Passionfruit Bostock $4.25: The staff person helping me told me this was a good option, so I was happy about that. I would agree! It has a beautiful crisp on the outside and a moist crumb inside. The passionfruit flavor was really nice and not too strong. I believe they rotate different flavors of this one, so I'd definitely want to try more. Bostocks on the whole are underrated, and I think they have just the loveliest texture. All-in-One Cake: This is so creative. I was going to stop at the above two pastries, but when the staff person said that this cake was quite literally made up of all the other cakes seen in the case, I was already sold. How cool and creative and reduce-reuse-recycle is that!!!?? I love! And it was such a fun eat! I love how they added crust at the bottom and a gorgeous chocolate layer on top to tie everything together. And every bite was a little different: some fruity, some nutty, some crunchier. Super cool. I was able to nab a table and work a little bit, which was nice. It's a good vibe inside with a little hustle and bustle, but still cozy overall. I'll be back!

Definitely go early to get everything fresh, but you probably won't run into a line if you don't. Highlight of the menu was absolutely the kouign amann - it was so buttery and flaky with this caramelized sticky sweet inside, rivaled in my eyes only by the Arsicault one. We also got the seasonal one (raspberry and guava) which was also really good. The passion fruit bostock was also interesting with this spongy cakey texture with an almond topping. The banana chocolate almond croissant was another favorite of mine, it's also such a unique item and definitely a must order. We sat inside at a table so we could eat some of the pastries right away which I highly recommend - everything lost freshness after a few hours and I probably wouldn't get anything from here again with the intention of eating it later. They have a ton of cakes too, tried the chocolate mousse cake, the berry cake, and the passionfruit orange and guava cake. The chocolate mousse was my favorite and runs on the sweeter side compared to other chocolate mousse's I've had. The other two are also amazing and have a bunch of different layers. I also tried the prosciutto burrata and cherry tomato tartine - an open faced sandwich basically - which tasted good but was kind of difficult to eat, either with hands or fork and knife. Would definitely come here again both because what I tried was so good and there are so many other things there I'd want to try.

I placed online orders in May 2021, April 2022, October 2022, June 2023, January 2025, and then today. (Thanks to my email which reminded me of the dates) Every single time I had to wait extra time for my previously placed online order to be ready. After several times of waiting for an extra 10 minutes, I decided to give them extra time to prepare the buns. It simply did NOT work. They always, and I mean always, asked me to wait for 5 more minutes. 5 minutes passed, and the order was still not ready. The average wait time has been 10 minutes in addition to the announced pick-up time. You might want to say, oh, I would like you to receive your buns warm and fresh. Thanks. But if a customer is late, they don't deserve warm and fresh buns. On the contrary, for us who are on time, why do we have to wait for extra time? Please consider adjusting the estimated pick-up time if you are super busy. I understand your store gets busy, and congratulations about that.
