I came here with a party of 4 and were seated outside during dinner when the whole place was pretty busy. Food came out quick, but we didn't have silverware. It took a bit of time to get someone's attention for it and by then most of the stuff started to get cold from the outside temps. I get that they were busy, but once you are seated outside it kind of feels like you're forgotten. We spent a good part of the night trying to get simple things for our table (water, drinks, napkins). The wine list they had was decent and the brussel sprouts were the best dish we had there. Everything else was just kind of just okay. The pasta sauces were either too watery or the flavors just weren't there. The pesto was the biggest letdown for everyone at our table. The place definitely has potential, so maybe someone in the kitchen was just having an off night, but outside of the appetizers nothing really stood out.

Insalata Di Barbabietole-roasted beets, spinach, almonds, cranberries

Went to Roma Antica Sunday, really not wanting to go into the Marina cuz parking is a bear, especially on a Sunday. But we knew it was going to be a good evening when we found a spot on Chestnut, half a block away from Roma Antica. Roma's rep is that they are a neighborhood restaurant, and to me it means they know their food, it's relatively reasonable, and its success depends on pleasing the people who most frequent them. We aren't from the neighborhood, yet the attitude of the wait staff is for us to have the best experience possible. The weather was sunny for SF, but knowing it can be fickle when we were offered to eat inside or out, seeing we were hedging, the maitre'd offered the window table, the "best table they had". It was 5:30, still warm, and it was the Best table. We started with Insalata di Barbabietole, a roasted. Beet salad, Crocchette di Melanzane-fried eggplant croquettes, and the Boscaiola pasta with mushrooms, Italian sausage in a tomato sauce. We also ordered the Kennebec truffle fries, with grated parm. The Barbabietole came first, dressed with a lemony vinaigrette that was just a hair too much vinaigrette, but refreshing nevertheless, we always order a caesar salad so the Barbietole was a welcome alternative. The sweetness of the cranberries played well with the salad. The Crochettes were crunchy and hot, a nice contrast to the cold salad, very tasty, the eggplant seasoned well, not oily like it had been sitting for a while. The Boscaiola was definitely the star of the meal. They split the serving into two, and there was plenty for my dining partner and myself. We both comment on how much we liked the rigatoni, cooked al dente, with big chucks of sausage, the onions playfully accompanying the sausage but not competing, the tomato sauce was rich and played well by the rigatoni, carrying much of the sauce with each, moist bite. Both servings came to us hot, not warmed under a lamp but seemingly directly from the sauté pan hot. We sopped up the sauce with the focaccia they served, spiked with rosemary and sliced cherry tomatoes. If I had an Italian mom, she'd expect me to not waste a drop. If the parking space on Chestnut when going to Roma Antica was an omen of things to come, we'd come into the marina more often. A very enjoyable meal, with wait staff attentive without overbearing. Even the busboys were smiling and friendly. The temperature had cooled where a light jacket would have been suitable, but our meal and the service made it much more tolerable. Roma Antica is definitely an asset to the Marina, we would definitely be back!

I try to come here whenever I'm in the area. Their focaccia bread is very tasty, and I always order the boscaiola (pink sauce) here. The staff were friendly and the space is cute (but dim with individual table lamps). There are outside seatings too where there's heating lamps and cute blankets. Would rec :))

Definitely an authentic Italian restaurant with great food and portions for a solid price! We ordered the truffle fries, margherita pizza, and coda alla vaccinara. Pasta was great, very flavorful and short rib was tender and juicy. Truffle fries were good, but the truffle taste is slightly on the lighter side. Margherita pizza was great, no complaints! The atmosphere is on the nicer end and love the decor and vibe of it all. Service was great! We recommend going early as it does get busy. We went on a Saturday night around 6pm and there were only a handful of tables free, def popular!

This place is wonderfully homey and intimate. It feels like you're at a friend's family house - albeit a loud and slightly chaotic house, but still good vibes. Came here on a Friday night with no reservations but we were able to be seated at the bar. The workers were warm and nice, though I think they forgot us sometimes - we had to ask multiple times for a to-go box and even to pay. The food itself was good. Standard portions, not too big but not too small. I got the carbonara, which was great. Nothing that I would change. My partner got a pappardelle dish. The sauce was quite salty, even by our standards (usually can tolerate high salt). Not sure if the sauce was erroneously salted too much, but the noodles itself in the dish were fine. Overall I think this a nice neighborhood spot for a casual meal. Would recommend!

Hidden gem with great pasta and even better service. This was our second time visiting Roma Antica. It is located on a cute restaurant and shopping street. Their cocktails are amazing. I particularly liked the passion fruit cocktail. For pasta I got the Sorrentina Alla Vodka. I never had this pasta shape before and it was unique and super fresh. I loved the cheese and chorizo on top. My partner got the Boscaiola which was amazing as well. I love that you can customize to red, white, or pink sauce (we went with the pink). We will definitely be coming back when we are in the area!

Heads up - this is not the place for a quiet romantic dinner. The servers are attentive, loud, very knowledgeable and friendly. You'll walk in and immediately feel like you've been here before because the vibe is "come in and have a drink and great food". The pasta is homemade and you can tell. I had the pappardelle, ox-tail ragu (suggestion from our server) and we finished dinner off with the pistachio cake (also suggestion). Everything was a flavor explosion. Not just good but very good. I wasn't as impressed with the calamari (not seasoned enough for me but the sauce had a good smoky taste) but everything else was so good this didn't matter. Fantastico!

I genuinely don't understand how this restaurant has such a high rating. The entire experience was disappointing from start to finish. The food was mediocre at best. For an Italian restaurant, the dishes lacked flavor and didn't feel worth the price. Even something as simple as asking about the different sauces for the Grandma's Gnocchi seemed to annoy our waiter, who acted inconvenienced by basic questions about the menu. On a chilly evening, my friend asked for a blanket, and instead of politely helping, a staff member practically slapped it onto their back and walked away. It came across as rude and dismissive. To make matters worse, servers were openly yelling at each other throughout the restaurant, creating an uncomfortable and unprofessional atmosphere. Between the poor service, lackluster food, and chaotic environment, it was hard to enjoy the evening. Overall, this was one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had in a long time. With so many better options available, I'd recommend taking your business elsewhere.

    Carbonara
    Shan C.

I tried the bosciola (both cream sauce and tomato sauce), and the carbonara. BOSCIOLA: obviously the flavor is different depending on which sauce you choose. The tomato sauce makes it more like a ragu. The cream sauce is really smooth and decadent (but not as cheesy tasting as a carbonara). The Italian sausage in it is AMAZING. I've never tasted Italian sausage like it--it's very similar to a Taiwanese sausage. A little sweet, and not as herbal forward. Nicely grilled with a slight crust. CARBONARA: really delicious and decadent. It's more salty than the bosciola and a lot more heavy. It's a dry cheesy sauce with salty bites of cured pork belly. SERVICE: Staff is very friendly and Italian lol. The food comes out pretty slow but I'm okay with it because they give you focaccia bread while you wait.

What a beautiful place with truly impeccable service. In authentic Italian style, my waiter made the entire experience absolutely unforgettable. But of course, I cannot leave the chef unmentioned, the meat was perfectly marinated, with such flawless texture that it created an indescribable pleasure with every bite. Thank you, Roma Antica. This is definitely a spot I'll be coming back to

    Margherita with Prosciutto

This is definitely my go to spot for great Italian food in the area! It can get busy if you come in at prime time 6-7 pm on a weekend, so we always try to avoid those times if we want to get seated right away. The staff are always so great and attentive :) We usually get a margarita pizza with prosciutto, which always comes out delicious every time. The pizzas are a decent size and they are always generous with the prosciutto which is nice. We tried the lamb shank last night and my boyfriend really enjoyed it - if you're on the hungrier side please do yourself a favor and try! It comes with a nice side of potatoes and spinach. Definitely coming back!

my friends and I stopped here for dinner on friday night and luckily were seated immediately! we loved the atmosphere of the restaurant- it was warm, inviting, and beautifully decorated. I also appreciate that it isn't too loud or cramped inside like some of the other restaurants in the marina area, making it more intimate and a great spot to be able to chat with friends. we ordered cocktails which we all loved! they were creative and refreshing- I especially enjoyed my aperol spritz. the complementary focaccia was delicious as well. as for food, we ordered the special (risotto with mushrooms and italian sausage), the pappardelle with oxtail, and the lasagna. the portions were large and presentation was great! the pastas were good but nothing too extraordinary- we noticed that the red sauces leaned on the sweeter side, just to keep that in mind. the risotto had great flavor and was cooked well but I wasn't a big fan of the type of mushrooms they used, as they got kind of mushy. our waiter was very attentive and checked in with us throughout the night. the lasagna took a while to come out so he comped it and gave us a free tiramisu which was very kind of him! overall, it was still a good dinner experience and I'd like to give it another try for the pizzas and other pastas.

Oh this place was such a good time. The food was amazing, the service and crew were so funny and extravagant, the ambiance was such a vibe. This place literally felt like being in a movie. It def gets packed and busy so plan to wait a while- we just got lucky! They sat us inside while a black and white movie was projected onto the bar wall and everyone was having such a good time lol. The pastas were so flavorful and the spicy vodka I got was the first pasta I've ever gotten where I didn't need to add red pepper flakes- deliciously spicy!!! The complimentary focaccia bread was also delicious. We had 2 plates. Could have had 8 tbh. I can't wait to be back!! P.S. the gentlemen singing happy birthday felt like I was in an opera house. That was our favorite part of the meal.

How long is the average dinner wait time on a weekend, specifically Sundays?

We had a party of 2 on the saturday right after valentine's day. We put our name on the yelp waitlist online around 6:30 pm. Got to the top of the list around 6:50, checked in with the host, and got officially seated around 7

Do they serve Jewish artichokes? We had them at several restaurants in Rome.

They did not when we were there but they often have different seasonal specials. The owners are great too so if you suggest I'm sure they will look into offering. Now I want one!

Do they have high chairs here?

Yes and they give a paper and crayons kids can play with.

    How good is this place?

Great menu, delicious food, impeccable & pleasant service, all reasonably priced. We'll definitely go again, and will again end our dinner with tiramisu! Nicely done!

Service is a little unusual in where you order outside (it was freezing and cold and I felt pressured to make a decision quickly so I didn't lose out on my turn in line.) I hope they change it but I guess it helps them serve more people. I also didn't like that there were people in bar stools to the right of us and I realized they were all overlooking our table and that was just too close for comfort. Service was alright tbh. Not anything to really acknowledge. I did not like the garlic bread. I couldn't taste the garlic at all and it was heavy on the parm and the bread was way too hard and crispy for my liking. But the pasta was incredible and only reason I'd be back. Their selection of beer/wine was underwhelming. Overall, I'd only come back from the pasta and nothing else.

The waiter had this game day World Cup football demeanor as though I was on the opposing team and his intention was to either kick the ball away from me, trip or make me fall down. My lunch mate told me this was their wait staff culture. They all act like that. Soooo weird, all I wanted was a peaceful meal. I ordered my favorite pasta which is linguine with clams (Most Expensive item on Menu at $34) and ask him about which sweet drink to order and that I didn't like sour or tart flavors. He suggested the Strawberry Limoncello (Beep Wrong Answer). All the drinks on menu had lime, Limoncello or boasted about being sour. Served my drink, it was tart, sour and slushy. The strawberries made me choke, cough loudly and gag more than a few times. I was determined to enjoy it and didn't want to spoil the ambiance. The waiter never came over to see if I was okay. I tried many times to get his attention waving my arms up high. Aren't they trained for victims who are choking and to recognize it right away? I managed to sip some water while guests gasped turning heads my way like I had Covid. So, here come the clams that surrounded the pasta. The thing is, 3/4 of them had no meat inside! They were empty open shells decorated on my plate how embarrassing! I've never seen that before served in any restaurant. Even more disappointing, it was so salty it was inedible. After my third forkfull attempt of telling myself this was a good meal. The overall flavor was delicious that absolutely, I couldn't eat! My friend told me several times, send it back. Even so the waiter side eyed me whisking my salty goodness away, never asking how's the drink? Minutes later he brought back a fresh plate of watered down swelled pasta and clams in every shell. Clearly they rinsed the pasta off so that it had no sauce. Steamed it, added butter, stuck it back on the plate. Guess what? It was still too salty! It was though the person who made the base sauce that morning added salt 3 times because he couldn't remember if he added salt and it wouldn't rinse off! I was so hungry and disappointed I ate it all. The clams were over salted delicious. Football wannabe quarterback waiter guy abruptly told me YOUR getting complimentary dessert, its your birthday right? Seriously, this guy needed etiquette and waiter lessons. Was that his way of saying Happy Birthday? I ordered the lemon merengue pie. Fluffy creamy whipped with a sparkler on top, soggy strawberries. No song and dance thank you! I took the pie home ate it later. The meringue was really white tall and fluffy barely toasted on top. Tasted like Cool Whip with whipping cream added, the lemon pie was tart, sweet and consistency dog food, the crust was like a hard cookie needed a knife to cut through, but it was the best part a little heavy on the shortening but tasty. Strawberries on the side looked 3 days old. (I've had better pies at Nation's Burgers!) Saving grace is I met a pair of nice ladies, sisters sitting next to me. One just became a grandma, baby born day before cutest baby ever. This made my day. The food however didn't. Will I go there again? Perhaps, for a salad with water and hopefully get a different waiter. I give it 3 stars for the delicious fried zucchini fries and because of the people I met, & nice interior design. Large windows, high ceilings and fresh AC clean air machines.
