"If your kiss turned me to stone I'd be a statue standing tall in Ancient Rome" (Luke Combs) (The English translation of Roma Antica is Ancient Rome) When your son is getting married and you want to host a Welcome Dinner for 28 adults and four children, but you live 3,000 miles away... what do you do? Well, you'd probably do what I did and check out a few restaurants close to the wedding hotel (to make things convenient for the out-of-town guests), send out some e-mails with a rough idea of what we were looking for, check if they have an appropriately sized private room for the date and times in question, and wait for the data to roll in. When all of that was crystallized, we had a clear choice - Roma Antica. Banquet Manager Andrea was quite responsive and answered our questions as we exchanged e-mails over a ten-week period. We held our dinner in the Baccio Room which served us well and even had a private bathroom for our guests. We ended up choosing a Prix Fixe dinner with four appetizers served family style, two pizzas, six entrees (ordered individually by our guests), and four desserts also served family style. We also had access to the Children's menu, and drinks were rolled up into our master bill. The food was great. The appetizers included meatballs, calamari, Caesar Salad, and Eggplant Parmigiana. The two pizzas were cheese and sausage. Our six entrees were Sausage Rigatoni, Mediterranean Sea Bass, Chicken Parmigiana, Mushroom Ravioli, Pesto Gnocchi, and Oxtail Pappardelle. The desserts were Tiramisu, Pannacotta, Biscottis, and Pistachio Cake. My favorite appetizers were the meatballs and calamari. My Sea Bass with potatoes and roasted vegetables entrée was excellent. My cocktail of choice was an Aperol Spritz. It was stronger than I expected but was a great combination of Aperol, Prosecco, Soda Water and Orange Juice. One unexpected highlight was a serenade by a server named Flavio. He must have had operatic training because he led us in a rousing sing along rendition of "Nel blu, dipinto di blu", better known as Volare. He dedicated it to my son and his fiancée who were married the next day. I just did a search for the English translation of the Italian lyrics, and found this phrase: "Singing, oh, oh, oh, oh! The Crocchette Di Melanzane were crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and disappeared from the table in minutes. For pasta, we ordered the Boscaiola Pasta, Porcini Ravioli, and the Diavola Pizza. Honestly, every single one was delicious. The Boscaoila pasta was creamy and comforting and my favourite, the porcini ravioli had a rich mushroom flavor without feeling too heavy, and the Diavola had a nice kick that wasn't overpowering. I came here with a party of 4 and were seated outside during dinner when the whole place was pretty busy. Food came out quick, but we didn't have silverware. It took a bit of time to get someone's attention for it and by then most of the stuff started to get cold from the outside temps. I get that they were busy, but once you are seated outside it kind of feels like you're forgotten. We spent a good part of the night trying to get simple things for our table (water, drinks, napkins). The wine list they had was decent and the brussel sprouts were the best dish we had there. Everything else was just kind of just okay. The pasta sauces were either too watery or the flavors just weren't there. The pesto was the biggest letdown for everyone at our table. It can get busy if you come in at prime time 6-7 pm on a weekend, so we always try to avoid those times if we want to get seated right away. The staff are always so great and attentive :) We usually get a margarita pizza with prosciutto, which always comes out delicious every time. I genuinely don't understand how this restaurant has such a high rating. The entire experience was disappointing from start to finish. The food was mediocre at best. We had such a wonderful Sunday night dinner here, dining alfresco. I love that the outdoor patio is covered not only with heat lamps, but they give every seat a little blanket as well. They start you off with fresh focaccia bread, and olive oil. Our beet salad was OK, you should chop the beats differently, so it's not so easy confusing with cranberries, but I really appreciated that they split the salad into two without us having to ask. The kids meals here were amazing. My son's pasta with marinara sauce and meatballs was so tasty that we ended up ordering extra meatballs. My daughter's cheese pizza was also very good. We loved that they shaped it as a Mickey Mouse. The bread was so fresh that even though we didn't order a regular pizza, I can tell that their pizzas must be really spot on. As a pescatarian, I regularly end up ordering the Branzino and this was one of the best ones I've had. They were two fillets that were both really juicy and tender. I find a lot of branzino dishes end up being kind of dry and thin. My husband was so in love with his trophie pasta - pesto sauce was so tasty, and the pasta was really fresh. The tomatoes were really juicy and sweet. Hard to tell if they were fresh tomatoes, or slightly sun-dried. They were also thoughtful enough to serve the meat on the side for my girlfriend, which was a nice accommodation. The pasta shape they used was interesting and unique - while I would have preferred a classic rigatoni for that traditional feel, this combination was still enjoyable and showed they're willing to put their own spin on classics. 3.5/5 Tiramisu had nicely flavored cream that was tasty, but the execution fell a bit short. The ladyfingers were too dry and could have soaked up more of the coffee and liqueur mixture, which would have given it that perfect melt-in-your-mouth texture that makes tiramisu so special. I'm really glad we finally tried Roma Antica! It's a solid Italian place in SF, and I can definitely see why it's rated highly in the area. The vodka sauce pasta has earned a spot as one of my top places to get this dish in the city. Between the quality ingredients, thoughtful service from Peppe, and creative takes on Italian classics, this is a restaurant I would absolutely return to. Went to Roma Antica Sunday, really not wanting to go into the Marina cuz parking is a bear, especially on a Sunday. But we knew it was going to be a good evening when we found a spot on Chestnut, half a block away from Roma Antica. Roma's rep is that they are a neighborhood restaurant, and to me it means they know their food, it's relatively reasonable, and its success depends on pleasing the people who most frequent them. We aren't from the neighborhood, yet the attitude of the wait staff is for us to have the best experience possible. The weather was sunny for SF, but knowing it can be fickle when we were offered to eat inside or out, seeing we were hedging, the maitre'd offered the window table, the "best table they had". It was 5:30, still warm, and it was the Best table. We started with Insalata di Barbabietole, a roasted. Beet salad, Crocchette di Melanzane-fried eggplant croquettes, and the Boscaiola pasta with mushrooms, Italian sausage in a tomato sauce. We also ordered the Kennebec truffle fries, with grated parm. The Barbabietole came first, dressed with a lemony vinaigrette that was just a hair too much vinaigrette, but refreshing nevertheless, we always order a caesar salad so the Barbietole was a welcome alternative. The sweetness of the cranberries played well with the salad. The Crochettes were crunchy and hot, a nice contrast to the cold salad, very tasty, the eggplant seasoned well, not oily like it had been sitting for a while. The Boscaiola was definitely the star of the meal. They split the serving into two, and there was plenty for my dining partner and myself. We both comment on how much we liked the rigatoni, cooked al dente, with big chucks of sausage, the onions playfully accompanying the sausage but not competing, the tomato sauce was rich and played well by the rigatoni, carrying much of the sauce with each, moist bite. Both servings came to us hot, not warmed under a lamp but seemingly directly from the sauté pan hot. We sopped up the sauce with the focaccia they served, spiked with rosemary and sliced cherry tomatoes. If I had an Italian mom, she'd expect me to not waste a drop. If the parking space on Chestnut when going to Roma Antica was an omen of things to come, we'd come into the marina more often. A very enjoyable meal, with wait staff attentive without overbearing. Even the busboys were smiling and friendly. The temperature had cooled where a light jacket would have been suitable, but our meal and the service made it much more tolerable. This restaurant has it all! I have been to it several times and it is a gem. The staff makes you feel like you are dining at a family home. They are extremely attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is romantic, cozy and comfortable. The food is like your Italian mama cooked for you. Their wine list shines, and their unique cocktails sparkle. Indulge in their delicious desserts with a rich cappuccino or espresso. All this and more for a very reasonable cost. TLDR: This place is TRULY a neighborhood spot. Think large portions of Italian comfort food and waiters who will joke with and serenade guests. Reservations from 11 - 6 pm and walk-ins only after 6 pm. I'd come back to try more pasta dishes if coming with a larger group and if surrounding restaurants were booked for the night. ------ FOOD: 1. [MUST TRY] RISOTTO WITH ITALIAN SAUSAGE (5/5) Some of the best risotto I've had in a while. The rice was cooked nicely, the dish was perfectly cheesy, herby, and infused with deep truffle oil, and they were extremely generous with the sausage chunks. Think of them more like chicken meatballs vs. sliced up sausages. Not listed on the menu but offered as a special (sometimes with sausage, sometimes with short rib). 2. LAMB SHANK (3/5) It was a large shank but it felt like 60% bone and 40% very tough-to-cut meat otherwise. Not only was the meat not tender, but we were only given blunt butter knives to try to cut the meat. The shank was served on a bed of mashed potatoes with a side of fried Brussels sprouts, which were actually very nicely fried without being too oily. The Brussels were sprinkled with a lot of sliced almonds and cranberries in a matchup I've never seen before. * Every table also gets a basket of this surprisingly delicious and fluffy forcaccia bread with cherry tomatoes baked into the bread. The bread was springy and flavorful. Came with olive oil. ------ ENVIRONMENT * Located very close to Little Original Joe's in Cow Hollow * Lots of street parking available around this area * The restaurant itself is surprisingly small with a narrow front dining room and a bar in the back -- most tables are for two or four * It's a cute vibe and feels very neighborhood-y, probably better for a group of friends who want a satisfying and fun / lively meal * Slightly darker ambiance with table-top lights at each table * The tables for two felt small, so really only two dishes fit on the table at any given time. I wouldn't recommend ordering too much at once if you're at one of these tables. ------ SERVICE * Feel very conflicted about the service. It was both pleasant and unpleasant at the same time. Sometimes the waiters seemed funny and charming. Other times they felt a bit rude to us. The vigorous serenading was a novel touch the first time of the night, but by the second and third time it started to get a bit distracting given the restaurant is quite small. * I had made a reservation for 5:30 pm but they seemingly couldn't find it in their system. There was a lady sitting facing the sun who looked like she was fully emersed in living her best life. Just sipping her wine, people watching and having a good time with the serves. I was walking over to Joes, husband caught bad vibes over there. So we left to enjoy Roma Antica. Had a wonderful meal with the family. Boy had the roman sausage pizza, we had the procuitto & burrata along with a mushroom truffle ravioli. Sat on the patio. Had a few glasses of vino and some chocolate gelato.
