Some sweet treats after hiking to Pena Palace and back.
    Alison M.

I loved this location right in the heart of historic Sintra - it was very nearby to our hotel at NH and I made my husband stop here every day for light drinks and snacks after we walked all over Sintra after our first morning breakfast here. It's super popular and crowded - I realized later there is a second location further up the hill which has a patio and more seating - but this is the original and it's fab. Seating is easy to come by if you walk past the crowd getting to-go items from day trippers. You walk on past and find the sign for waiting to be seated and can easily find a table. Staff are friendly and they are very fast and efficient. We tried several things here and I really enjoyed their fresh orange juice and coffee. Pastries are wonderful and they have a large selection. We tried several things - chocolate biscuit cake, coconut cake, a ham and cheese croissant, chicken savory pastry and a few other beef and cheese items. My favorite was the "pillow of Sintra" Travesseiro pastry which was rich, warm, and almond-flavored. SO good. You must try it. Maybe it's sacrilege, but I loved it more than the Pastel de Nata.

Piriquita in Sintra is a must visit if you have a sweet tooth. It gets very crowded so be prepared to take a number and wait for your turn but it is absolutely worth it. The traditional pastry is scrumptious with layers of deliciousness and a rich almond center that really stands out.

Located in a cute town in Sintra, it is a must go and the most famous dessert, is worth the try. The area surrounding was also very cute and it's worth eating a snack and walking around. It is translated into "Pillow" or travesseiro in Portuguese. This is a super famous one, according to the tour guide. Econ tasted like an apple fritter. It was flaky and sweet and covered in sugar. It was very lightweight and honestly, I would highly recommend anybody try it. It paired nicely with the latte I ordered as well. The place is very busy and very high paced. If you want to get takeout, you have to get a ticket at the front of the entrance. And they call you out as you come in. Your order at the counter and they usually grab and go. Otherwise you can sit inside and there's around 20 people worth of seating it's a relatively smaller place though she just be mentally prepared to squeeze.

Delicious desserts, service was quick. Place was packed with people. Cute little tables.

The historic bakery was established in 1862. I watched "Somebody Feed Phil" and this was one of the places he tried. If it's too busy, they do have a second location close by. The most popular item is the "Pillow"- puff pastry with an egg cream and almond filling. We also tried the Pastel da Cruz Alta- egg cream, almond and white beans, wrapped in puff pastry. We enjoyed both. It was a quick and delicious break.

The selection of pastries here is fantastic and I wish we got more of the pastry with Nutella inside because it was . Must stop here during your visit! You get a number and the wait in line was short. Buy several!

I ordered the original Travesseiro. I was afraid it's going to be dry and too sweet but it was moist and was perfect sweetness. I really enjoyed it even in the heat! Thought I have to wait long but you just grab a number and the wait was not long.

Cute spot with a line full of people eager to find the most talked about pastry. Just so you know, I'm not a big fan of sweets so it takes a lot for me to be impressed. I had the ham and cheese croissant, the famous almond pastry and the mini Queijadas and travesseiros. They were good but the sugary one had A LOT of sugar; too much for my liking. The customer service is great and the place is cute. In spite of the long line, it goes pretty smooth. Enjoy!

This is a very popular pastry shop in Sintra, located right in the heart of the cute little village -- a perfect stop while exploring the area. The place is always busy, and you can tell it's a hotspot for tourists, especially for their famous "pillow" pastry. However, the service was just so-so. Communication was difficult since most staff spoke only Portuguese. They're very particular about the dine-in process -- if you order first and then say you want to sit down, they'll cancel your order and ask you to find a table before reordering. I assume this system helps them manage the crowd and avoid long lines, but it felt a bit confusing for visitors. As for the food, the "pillow" pastry wasn't my favorite -- too big, heavy, and overly sweet, more like a dense donut than a delicate pastry. The egg tarts were average, and the drinks were just okay. Overall, it's worth a stop for the experience, but not something I'd go out of my way for next time.

I would've missed this place completely if not for our tour guide's recommendation. It's important to note this place has two different locations. The one that's situated closer to the main square opens earlier and is far busier, but if you walk uphill a bit you'll find this second location which opened around 10 the day we were there. If you come here you need to get the Travesserio, which are pastries shaped like pillows. Light, airy, fluffy, and perfectly sweet, these were some of the best pastries we had besides the pastel de nata. They were so good we ended up ordering another round. The ambiance of this place is very humble bakery vibes. The staff were mostly little old ladies which added to the charm. It felt like we were having dessert at grandma's house, really. If you're in Sintra definitely stop in and grab one (or a few) Travesserio.

Left to right: Traditional travesseiro, Nutella travesseiro, Queijada, Pastel da Cruz

The pastries here were so good! We got the travesseiros de Sintra, which contain almond and egg yolk cream, the Nutella travesseiro, queijadas de Sintra, which contain cheese, sugar, and cinnamon, and pastel da Cruz Alta, which contains egg cream, almond, and white beans. My personal favorite was the traditional travesseiro - it was very flavorful and not too sweet. The Nutella travesseiro was extremely sweet but still very good. The queijadas and pastel da Cruz were also pretty solid. If I were to go back, I would just get two traditional travesseiros. This was a perfect first step for breakfast before going to Pena Palace and Moorish Castle during our day trip to Sintra from Lisbon.

First stop in Sintra was a bakery, obviously. I'm a tourist, fatten me up and call it culture. We hit Piriquita, the oldest bakery in town and basically a rite of passage. Grabbed the classics: a flaky Travesseiro (pillow, but make it sugar) and Queijadas (cheese tarts). Pro tip: this place gets swarmed, so carb-load before you go get enchanted by castles. Priorities.

    Steve S.

We were hard pressed to find ANY negatives about the pastry and treats in Lisbon and Casa Piriquita didn't let us down. We tried queijadas and travessieros and both were delicious. The whole town of Sintra was beautiful and the people were so friendly. Absolutely thrilled we used tour guides.

I saw a woman bring a dozen to our breakfast spot, Cafe Saudude. The egg tarts are well known in Macau, Hong Kong, and now in China. The queijadinha, 葡式椰香小蛋糕 or 巴西椰蓉球, is less popular. Per wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queijadinha - Queijadinha is a custard tart that originated in Brazil. The locals, aka the Portuguese, beg to differ. Another aspect of Brazilian influence on Portugal is that, even though Portugal was the colonizer and Brazil was the colony. It's funny to get different answers on who or where Queijadinha originated. Our guest house lady from Sintra said, "Wiki is wrong. It's from Portugal." One Uber driver from Brazil said straight, "Oh, it's from Brazil." Wherever it originated, it's delicious from Sapa. They have a minimum of €4.5 for a credit card purchase.

When we arrived, they were just doing counter service and closing for the afternoon, but we were able to get a panini and we found local craft beer (which was pretty neat) and they let us eat on their patio. I had the Iberian sandwich which has Iberian prosciutto, flamengo cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickled red onion. It was the perfect sandwich to cure my hangry. When we went for lunch the day before we did not know that this café was also the breakfast part of our bed and breakfast. We stayed at a bed-and-breakfast the next street over and both mornings a continental breakfast at this café was included. This is one of the best breakfasts I have ever had as part of the bed-and-breakfast. We were each served a portion of fresh fruit (which changed by the day), a boiled egg, a couple slices of ham and cheese, a pastel de nata, a basket of crossiants and rolls to share, and whatever you would like to drink. I had fresh squeezed orange juice, and a latte both days. Thankfully, like most places in Portugal they offer dairy alternatives. I honestly still dream about this breakfast. The wait staff on all of our trips were so friendly and helpful. It is really a beautiful set up and they have many things that you can purchase as well. I personally purchased a bowl shaped like a strawberry that I now have in my kitchen. This is definitely a stop. You need to make while in Sintra!
