Mercy House is seriously a life-saver. After dealing with housing crisis/rent assistance emergency…read moremid-to-late last year due to heart attack from undiagnosed condition I had suffered leaving me unable to work and awaiting disability benefits application process I was facing eviction because of inability to pay my rent. Miguel who was then the main individual at Mercy House who was in charge of/or responsible for working with people with similar particular housing/rental assistance issue & predicaments as mine WAS AMAZING! I believe he's still with Mercy House but I believe was promoted within company if I'm not mistaken It would make perfect sense that he was because he's literally the most genuine, sincerely helpful person I've ever met. Not just saying that lightly. He went over and beyond to provide assistance with clarity & empathy, even reaching out to my property manager with a message for me after unable to reach me by phone I had just lost. I cannot recommend Mercy House and their staff/team members such as Miguel Alatorre-Munoz enough to any out there who need or knows those who need assistance. They are great and compassionate group of people doing the Lord's work for sure.

1 star because I was able to receive assistance…read more The remaining stars were kept due to the gate keeping of resources, specifically for the Latino community and shelters for undocumented individuals and families. They like to pick and choose who can receive access to necessary social services, which is absolutely wild. Ive experienced this first hand with Erica Hernandez, who not only has a very unwelcoming energy, but would not give me access to any resources I could reach out to seek other types of necessary assistance. All this while recovering from a c section with three small children. She also threatened to keep me from ever being able to come back because I took too long to fill out her exit form. She wanted me out of the program so badly, she contacted me more to be exited than she did to help keep my kids under a roof. I hope God has Mercy on those type of people (who go into social work jobs with extremely low and nasty vibrations). You're a civil servant, take pride in ALL of your community. Thats all folks.

My daughter lives there and she's recently gotten 2 violations…read more She didn't get a warning just vollations. They have no proof and everything they said was incorrect. 3 violations and supposedly she's evicted? She called me crying yesterday be cause of the 2nd violation. They are harassing and discriminating her. We are not going to take this lightly. There are so many other residents doing much worse. I've seen this place go down the drain since it first opened. Dog barf in the elevator...homeless people doing drugs out front, human pee in the stairs. I could go on and on. They say they help people but they are doing nothing but giving my daughter stress and anxiety. After the first violation...which was a joke...Myself,my daughter and her boyfriend went to talk to the manager. She was only patronizing us. The newest violation says she's had people living here for over 14 days? Both me and my daughters bf live elsewhere and can prove it. We are seeking legal counsel as well as other alternatives.

WISEPlace has offered transitional shelter to women only, for 32 years. I've volunteered there off…read moreand on for about 25 years. Admittedly any "business" that operates on a shoestring comprised mostly of donated money, goods and services will be imperfect, and WISEPlace is no different. That being said, my experience of the staff and volunteers has always been that they all care deeply about and are respectful of their guests. I know many women who have successfully graduated from the program and are now contributing to society. They come back to give a hand up to their "sisters" who come in behind them. These staff and volunteers wouldn't be doing that if they didn't care and sincerely want to help. SAFEPlace, which is a TEMPORARY emergency shelter came to be when the county requested assistance bringing our many homeless indoors. WISEPlace was one of very few that stepped up to say, "we will help". It is not a permanent solution, though the folks at WISEPlace are hard at work raising money and awareness to build permanent housing for this population of chronically homeless women. This is a non-profit with an inspiring history and a bright future. I enjoy every visit I make to the shelters and believe that everyone there is hard at work trying to make life better for the residents. It is a great place to volunteer!

I honestly would have given this place a five star, but I've been here for almost a year now and…read morethe ladies who recently just got hired for the women's program are so horribly fake & VERY uncompassionate. I was ONE month away from getting my housing and they did everything possible to take me out of Community Leader position, and kick me out of the house saying I had a 'behavior problem' when I would stick up for myself. Not to mention I've had mail stolen from them & they packed all my belongings in my room without my consent & they lost my W2 FORM. Completely unprofessional & the women who work here in the house of SERENITY are very immature.

When there was a problem with a staff member falsely accusing me of drug use (I had been in the hospital the night before and I had proof), Je'net Kreitner made the situation right instead of standing up for staff member's accusation. That has stayed with me especially since I've been in two shelters with unethical staff members who treat their program guests badly. While Grandma's House of Hope can be a little strict with their program, I always felt safe while I stayed there and NEVER felt bullied by staff or the one in charge of the temporary shelter. I would rather pay a program fee than stay at an abusive temporary shelter for free. Assuming the program is similar now to how it was when I stayed there in 2017-2018 you'll be in good hands. You do get assigned chores but you'll never fear for your safety here and they keep their word. If they allowed me to go back I would in a heartbeat as I am in a temporary bind again (after my dad sold the house)! However, I'm a Buena Park resident and things changed due to COVID I'm assuming so I had to stay in a Buena Park shelter instead. Thank you Grandma's House of Hope!

Out of 5 meals they served I was only able to eat rice at 1 meal. I was so hungry. I was very stearnly advised by a woman worker that I had to get a doctor's note & then they would make a special meal. I later found out from another worker that would be their "healthy meal" which was a soy burger, rice & veg. Soy is one of the things I absolutely can't have! They would not help me! My case worker who works somewhere else was going to try & help (Grace-bless her heart), but I had already decided to leave for another reason. I arrived late Fri night & went right to bed, left Sat morning to do errands & was on my bed the rest of the day. First thing Sun morning they put the entire shelter on lockdown due to someone testing positive for covid & some people were taken to a hotel for quarantine. That's all good, but there were people like me that just got there & had zero exposure. They weren't lifting the lockdown until afternoon Xmas. They could have had those vaccinated like me tested per CDC guidelines 5-7 days later & allowed us to go have Christmas with our families!! I left the place, know I don't have Covid but will get a rapid test done on Thurs to make my family feel safe. Never want to go back there!
