I generally hate going to the dentist because it just hurts so much but because of her I do want to come back. It does take four months to get an appointment for a cleaning but it's well worth it. Dr. Cook and his team are wonderful! Dr. Cook is very laid back and creates a really nice environment in his practice. The dental hygenists are wonderful, and always do a really thorough job while cleaning. My husband and I saw Dr. Cook for all 8 years that we lived in Davis Square, and never had a bad experience. Whenever one of us had an issue that extended beyond his specialty (wisdom teeth removal or jaw issues), he made really good referrals for us and ensured that we understood what the likely next steps would be. Where do I begin? Hearts? Flowers? Unicorns? I love this dentist. About ten years ago I had a very rare cyst encompassing my entire lower jaw. I had to have all of my lower front teeth removed and my jawbone filed down. I am originally from NY, and so all of this oral surgery was done there. Needless to say, given my circumstance I was extremely nervous about finding a dentist who would do right by me. THEN, I got a tip from a coworker who told me that Dr. Cook was both hot AND cool, and since that is what REALLY matters when finding a dentist, I decided to give him a shot. I hardly had to finish explaining what had happened to me ten years prior, and Dr. Cook knew what was up. He was able to explain everything to me in a very thorough manner, and I totally trust him to tell me when I need work done...he's reasonably priced and avoids anything invasive unless absolutely necessary. OH! Also totally worth mentioning-the one thing I absolutely hate the most about going to the dentist is the Novocaine shot. I've never had a dentist administer the shot without intense pain...until Dr. Cook! He finished with the shot, and I didn't feel a thing. I was like, "Are you done?" Except it was kinda slurred. Cause, you know, Novocaine. I had an appointment with him yesterday and not only was I psyched to arrive, but I was also sad to leave. (Don't tell anyone). I've always had the most wonderful friendly hygienists, and I simply must give a shout out to Eric B. I have no idea what he does there. He wears scrubs, and I do see him running around doing dentist-type stuff, but I think his main job is head of patient entertainment. SO, in sum, Five stars to me for having no cavities, (although I AM a little upset that I did not get a sticker) and five stars plus miles of smiles to Dr. Cook for being the most talented AND lovable dentist I've ever had. Another 5 star review for CBC, DMD. I hadn't been to the dentist in 8 years before I came to Dr. Cook last year. That's right: 8 freaking years. A combo of fear and embarrassment kept me away for so long, but that's all over now. I can genuinely say that I'm not at all nervous about the dentist any longer. I can't believe that people would rate Dr. Cook's office at anything less than a five (or maybe a four for the exceptionally stingy reviewers). Anyone giving a low rating simply due to lack of immediate cleaning openings for new patients might need to grow up a little bit. A popular solo practitioner like Dr. Cook can't just clone himself to perform dental work demanded by everyone in Greater Boston. I started coming here a while back based on the great reviews and was not disappointed. Warm vibe, with excellent music. The receptionist is welcoming and friendly. My cleanings have always been as comfortable as you can get considering what it is they are doing. The hygienist is very skillful and knowledgeable. I've done countless cleanings with other offices over the years but I actually learned some new tips from her. Dr. Cook is amazingly personable while still being a highly skilled professional. Best Dentist Ever! I hadn't been to the dentist in at least 5 years, and finally went when my wisdom teeth became intolerable. Dr. Cook referred me to a wonderful oral surgeon, then provided me with excellent follow-up to the surgery. Unlike other dentists, they didn't make me feel bad about having not gone to the dentist in a long time. They had a very "well, that's the past--lets get you back on track" attitude. Everyone at the office is incredibly nice, have great personalities, and are just great at being "people persons". And best of all, they are very willing to work with you to figure out payment. I have to agree with yelper L B. this practice is the bee's knees. Dr. Cook was recommended to me by my roommate, who has been going to him for years. I had about a six month wait, but the office was good about calling me if they had a cancellation (unfortunately timing never worked in my favor). The quality of service and professionalism was fantastic and refreshing. The hygienist made me feel right at home and made conversation throughout the cleaning. Dr. Cook is an affable guy who makes potentially scary follow up appointments seem like no big deal. I'm totally psyched to have found this practice, and it will be one of the first things I mourn if I ever leave the Boston area. read more

Started going here in mid-2009. Stopped going early 2011. Casey Cook, the dentist, is a really friendly, fun guy. He has great bedside manner. The office has good music, everyone seems like they're in a good mood. That's all stuff that's in the typical Yelp review I read before calling to make my first appointment, and it's true. What differed in my experience was that there was no long wait to get my first appointment. Also, his rates are very reasonable (I was paying out of pocket). But the longer I went to see Dr. Cook the more I realized that I wasn't confident I was actually receiving good quality dental care. I'm not a dentist, how am I supposed to know? I started getting nervous when I realized that my cleanings took about 15 minutes and my teeth never had that shiny-smooth feeling I was used to after visiting the dentist. Then when I had my last cleaning/exam in October and he breezed in for a quick 2 minute exam and told me everything looked just fine I started to really wonder. See, I'm VERY cavity prone. I can't remember the last time I went more than a year without a new cavity. For him not to take any xrays and tell me I was fine made me uneasy. When I first went in I had told him about pain I was having in a tooth when I bit down on something hard. He had told me he couldn't see anything wrong in that area, so I should just ignore it unless the pain got so sever it impacted my life. So I ignored it the best I could and just chewed hard food on the other side of my mouth, all the while wondering in the back of my mind if this was the right thing to do. Long story short, I saw a new dentist recently. When I described the pain I was having in my tooth, he said that is the classic presentation of a cracked tooth. There's no need to "see" something wrong with the tooth, the description is exactly what is needed to diagnose it. Like Casey Cook, the new dentist had me bite down on a plastic thing to find out exactly where the pain was, but unlike Casey who told me to ignore it, the new dentist told me I'm at risk of having my tooth crack open and I need a root canal and crown asap. So, my conclusion is that I no longer feel that Dr. Cook was giving me good dental care, however nice he was or as convenient as his office location was. read more

I am embarassed it has taken me so long to give Dr. Cook and his incredible staff this stellar review! No words to do this justice other than to say Dr. Cook is ROCKSTAR. Particularly since he likes to sing along and rock out to whatever fantastic radio station it is they always seem to have playing. No muzak here folks! I have awful teeth that I have horribly neglected for some years now. I have terrible dental anxiety and avidly avoided the dentist even after I had dental insurance in my adult life. About 4 years ago, I finally decided to be a grown-up and go get what I knew were some mega-cavities looked at. With much trepidation, I started the online process of researching dentists in my area (at the time Somerville). It didn't take long to find the visible following and fan base Dr. Cook has developed. I swallowed all of my anxiety and got myself booked for an appointment with Meg. The day of my first visit, I was literally hyperventilating I was so nervous. Unlike some folks, I knew my mouth was in rough shape and going to need some work. I had also never had my wisdom teeth out and suspected that I was going to need to be referred to an oral surgeon. The visit felt high stakes. From the minute I walked in the door, I realized my nerves were fore naught. From the lovely receptionist who greeted me and reviewed my insurance in fabulous, informed detail to the free toothbrush when I left, everything was top notch. Meg is a dental angel as far as I am concerned. She has a feather light touch and warm demeanor that will put almost anyone at ease. She both honored and respected my anxiety, keeping me informed each step of the way what was happening and was very attentive to any pain I might be experiencing. Similarly, she avoided the lectures that so often come from not visiting a dentist for so many years, knowing how anxiety provoking this was for me. The highlight of the visit definitely came in my first interaction with the good doctor himself. From his warm bedside manner to witty banter with both myself and Meg, he put me right at ease. Dr. Cook also avoided the lectures, speaking frankly about the needs of my teeth, but embracing that I had taken the step to come in at all. Fast forward to 2010, due to both budget and time constraints, while I kept up with cleanings for a while, I wasn't able to get a lot of the work I have needed done at that time. I just returned to Dr. Cook today for a LONG overdue cleaning and the scheduling of many appointments for further work. Despite their incredibly hectic schedules, they squeezed me in for both a cleaning and visit with Dr. Cook on 24 hours notice (thanks guys!). I also had the chance to try Corey, one of his newer hygenists. While I will say that I prefer Meg, she took great care of me and even gave me some mild numbing gel to ensure my visit wasn't too painful. A word to the wise: New patients looking just to get in the door for basic care and cleanings are likely to wait 10-12 months depending on how booked the schedule is. However, urgent needs (pain, fillings, root canals etc) are generally seem more quickly. You should also get yourself on the cancellation list, and they will call you if a space opens up. I've had good luck with this when I've had to cancel a cleaning last minute in the past. Regardless of your fears, phobias, concerns or past experiences, give Dr. C and his amazing staff a chance. Been going here for almost 6 years and now looking for another spot. I am in the medical field and have a very unpredictable schedule. I have waited in their offices for my appointment a few times for over 15minutes and never complained. I was late for one appointment in 6 years and I called 1 hour before to say that I was seeing my last patient and I was running late and would really appreciate it if they see me. The dentist was outside behind the counter and just said hello and walked away while the secretary told me that he was busy. Once in a while seeing a late patient as a courtesy is not a big deal. If my patients show up late and have called in advance, I still see them, even if I am almost out the door. Going to find a place where patients are valued. read more

Dr. Cook is so awesome that there is very understandably a waiting list to become a new patient, and I was on the waiting list but then sadly needed an emergency appointment for an abscessed tooth (floss, kids - just floss, every chance you get). The office called me the next business day and gave me a same-day appointment. Everyone is incredibly nice, I was made to feel very comfortable, and they took x-rays to diagnose the problem right away. I need a root canal, post, and crown :( and was given a referral to a great endodontist who specializes in root canals and offers preferential scheduling to Dr. Cook's patients. I called them late-ish yesterday and got a call this morning offering me an appointment for the day after tomorrow. I think it says a lot about Davis Square Dental that 1) they not only have wonderful staff and provide amazing service, but also have such a strong relationship with local allied professionals for specialized procedures 2) the abscess is healing on its own and the pain has subsided greatly, so I wasn't prescribed antibiotics because they're just not necessary at this point; I *hate* the CYA over-use of antibiotics that's currently so prevalent in many medical practices, though I was totally prepared to take them if they were prescribed 3) the staff was relaxed and clearly happy to be working there, suggesting that Dr. Cook is a good employer as well as a good dentist, which is very important to me as a customer or patient anywhere 4) I have dental insurance, but they didn't ask me to pay a single penny at the time of the visit; I can only assume that they'll follow up with me to bill for anything the insurance doesn't cover, but I got the impression that the quick visit wasn't a big deal and they might not? I'll be back for the post and crown, and it will be worth whatever they charge. 5) I was given an appointment to come back in five weeks, right *after* my sister's wedding and thus perfect timing Also, a grateful shout-out to Eri(c/k) who took the x-rays and the warm receptionist. I was depressed and nervous when I walked in the door, but actually smiling when I walked out -- even though it still hurts to smile. read more

great dentist, nice guy. waited a spell before reviewing to see how the work held up over time. experienced some severe pain (i.e. couldn't sleep and was starting to feel the effects at work) in my bottom molars, went to another dentist who saw old filling work that needed to be redone but didn't really get to the root of the problem. came to dr. cook and he saw that my teeth were dying and referred me to a fantastic endodontist (pat machalinski) who got me sorted asap. fast forward to regular work. i had maxed out my dental insurance with the two root canals and crowns, so he helped prioritize and schedule the regular work around that. did a great job with the crowns and with the standard work on my teeth. i've heard every dentist has a signature in the way they do their work and his work has been complimented by a specialist and another dentist (i've since switched cities). read more

So far so good. I went to Dr Cook after a different dentist was unable to explain why my tooth was hurting after she had filled a cavity. Dr. Cook still wasn't sure why, but he offered some thought-out guesses, and explored and explained each one, which was reasurring. I'm supposed to keep monitoring the pain for two more weeks... I sure hope it goes away on its own, but if it doesn't, at least I trust Dr. Cook to help. read more

dr. cook is my dentist! most of the appointment is spent with his hygienist, as it usually goes. the first hygienist i had was perfect, and efficient. the last one was probably a bit newer and a bit more pokey (ow, ow), but not traumatizing, by any means. and dr. cook is dr. cook. chipper, friendly. clean office, no frills waiting room with a clean bathroom and friendly people. the receptionist is a sweetheart. on and on. i give 'em 5 stars because they appear to have all the latest technological doo-dads (crazy lit magnifying glass eyewear!) and do the requisite oral cancer screen (move around your tongue) that i've seen with all the newest kids in town. they also sell a whitening kit for a couple hundred which you can do on your own with a mold that you cast with them. it works pretty well. read more

I moved to Davis a couple of years ago and was reluctant to go to the dentist because I hadn't been for quite some time and I knew it'd probably mean $$. Luckily, I got put on a cancellation list and was seen much sooner -- and boy was it worth it! Now booking *seven* months ahead for cleanings! The first time I went to this guy to get a cavity filled, he and his hygienist had this Monday morning conversation as they prepped me for drilling. Dr. Cook: So I got your text message on Saturday - totally illegible. Hygienist dude: Yeah, I don't even remember writing it. Dr. C: It was so hilarious. I spent 20 minutes just staring at it, trying to decipher what you were trying to say. H-dude: Yeah, they should make phones that know when you're dru- uh, when you shouldn't be writing text messages. Aside from that everything was professional and relatively painless. I felt a bit rushed through it, though. I guess when someone spends so much time in your mouth up to their wrists, it inevitably feels a little cold when they show you the door. read more

I have been going to Casey B for a couple years now. He has always been very personable and funny, and definitely makes the whole dental experience more relaxed. He doesn't seem like the typical dentist...I can honestly say I have never laughed more when I am at the dentist. They care a great deal about their patients, and I find the office to be run very well, and the staff are very friendly. i am surprised that i haven't known about dr casey cook before. i used to goto central sq dental and man were they horrible. so yelped and saw casey with gr8 reviews. i had to do 2 fillings and 1 cap done. during the procedures he was really nice and was took into consideration about my pain levels. also, he explained to me in details why i need a root canal...i like docs that provide good information to help you make decisions. he recommended endodontics to perform the root canal. overall my experience has been great.. i highly recommend him read more

Horrible experience. I chose here because of the good review. However, the doctor was kind of cold moody, and did not want to explain things in details. He used silver for my wife's filling without even ask. Nowadays, it is very rare to use silver because of the obvious reason. Even worse, he did not complete the filling, just put a temporary one there. This place might be OK 10 years ago, but is definitely not up to standard now. If I can, I will choose ZERO star. First went to see Dr. Cook after 5 years without visiting a dentist to get an emergency procedure done (very shocking given the long layoff without a dentist). He re-worked his schedule to see me on short notice, and he was able to save a tooth that, in talking to dentist family members, was a 50/50 proposition at best. Haven't even thought of seeing another dentist since. The best thing about Dr. Cook is that he does great work with a smile -- never makes the patient feel guilty about any dental problems and is always realistic and constructive in discussing preventative measures to take. Everything you've read about Dr. Cook is 100% accurate. I only wished I had found out about him years ago. Like most folks who's only had painful and unfriendly dental experiences, I had put off going to the dentist for a few years. Dr. Cook never judged me. He made me feel welcome and informed me of my options with pros and cons and I was able to make a choice that made sense to me. I'm not one to write rewiews however when a dentist gets you a temporary tooth made in about 3 days and comes in to the office on Christmas Eve to install it and to make sure you're satisfied most certainly deserves one. I know the office doesn't look like much but would you rather pay for all the fancy office and surroundings or just honest and high quality dental work? for me the answer is simple. I'll take the dental work at a fair price over all else and the lack of MUZAK makes it even better! read more

I've been going here ever since my senior year at Tufts (4 years - *gasp, I'm old*), and I recommend it to everyone. It doesn't look flashy on the outside, and it's not flashy on the inside, but that's the way I like it. The staff is young, energetic, and super friendly. They play Radio 92.9 24/7. They'll work with you to find the right time for your appointment and are helpful if you have to cancel last minute - they'll put you on the cancel list and get in touch when there's an opening. Casey himself is awesome - not your typical 50-something awkward dentist who only talks to teeth. He loves getting to know and chatting with his clients. Seriously, people, Dr. Cook is the best darn dentist I've ever had (and I've had some good ones). Dr. Cook doesn't believe in unnecessary procedures and he always has his patients' best interests at heart. He's not going to recommend expensive cosmetic work just so you have a weirdly perfect mouth--he's just going to do everything necessary to make sure that your teeth are taken care of! Other reviewers have mentioned Dr. Cook's sense of humor, and I can't overstate how wonderful it is to have a Dr. with such a great personality and ability to make you feel at ease when he's drilling away. My friend who also sees Dr. Cook and I were talking yesterday and we decided that part of the reason why we love to see him is that he makes us feel special. He always remembers what's going on with our lives and knows the right questions to ask and things to say to get a chuckle out of us. It's not quite fair that he's always cracking me up while I've got a dental dam in my mouth; I end up drooling on myself. The hygienists at DSD are so gentle that they do take some getting used it if you are accustomed to walking out of a cleaning with sore gums or a bloody mouth, as many of us are. I think we've been conditioned to think that this is what clean teeth should feel like, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that sore gums are not healthy gums! Simply put, Casey is the best dentist I've ever had. I wish I still lived in Somerville so I could go to Casey. And this coming from someone who dreads going to the dentist. But like many of Casey's reviewers have said, he puts you at ease, and instead of needless and unnecessary scolding, tries to formulate a plan with you instead of going off on his own dictating policy on your own teeth. About five months ago, I was having intermittent pain in one of my molars which was getting worse, so I was researching dentists in the area. I had a bad experience with a dentist when I first moved to the area, so I hadn't had a checkup in two years. I probably would have put it off a bit longer, but I broke a tooth as well and went to Dr. Cook based on Yelp reviews. When I went to Dr. Cook, the receptionist was very nice and even gave me some change for the meter. I definitely felt welcomed. When I met with Dr. Cook, he was detached and seemed uninterested. He checked out the X-rays and said I needed a root canal and cap for the broken tooth. I asked if there was any way to save the tooth, but he said I had broken off more than half the tooth. This didn't seem quite right, as I wasn't having any pain from the broken tooth and to me it looked like a sheet of enamel had come off. I am not a dentist, so I thought, "What do I know?" The main reason I was there was for the painful molar, which I was very concerned about because it hurt. Dr. Cook looked at the X-ray and didn't see anything. He told me it probably had to be capped as well and mentioned several cavities that needed attention as well. He wanted me to set up a series of appointments for the broken tooth in 6 months, followed by a series for the molar. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of waiting that long for a remedy for my painful molar, which would throb while I was trying to sleep. Six months was too long, so I made an appointment with my old Dentist in CT. I saw him the following week and was surprised. He repaired the broken tooth in about 10 minutes, saying a cap would have been 'very aggressive'. As for the painful molar, I had a fracture in the tooth. It isn't obvious on X-ray and turns up on examination. He repaired it in about 30 minutes. I did have a couple of cavities, but there wasn't any rush to fix those. It cost me roughly 200-300 for the repairs, rather than a couple thousand for root canals and caps not to mention the pain and time commitment. I wanted to wait a while after I had the work done before I posted a review to see how it all turned out. The pain literally went away right after he repaired the fractured molar, and the broken tooth looks like new and has felt perfectly strong and sound since the repair. Overall, I will not be returning to Dr. Cook. It's a bit of a drive, but it's worth it for me to make the haul to CT until I can find someone closer. read more

I've had lots of dental work done in the past and knew I had some old cavities. Also, like many people, I get anxious when I think about going to the dentist. All of the great reviews I read on Yelp were accurate. Dr. Cook was very professional, informative, and nice. His staff was equally as nice (and funny)!
