I know some people shy away from chains but I have to say that this office has consummate professionals that have kept me coming back for years. Dr. Navy has the calm of a Buddhist monk, I swear. He welcomes all of my questions (answered most patiently) and has the most calming manner of any dentist I've encountered. His voice could be on a zen app, reading bedtime stories, I swear! I got my first cavity ever in my early 40s and was freaked out about novocaine and the process of drilling & filling. He put my fears at ease and handled my transformation from a 40-something to a 3yo in his chair without blinking an eye. Haley is my hygienist and will be for as long as she works in the field. I swear, I'll follow her wherever she goes, she's amazing and down-to-earth, knows all my sensitive spots (thanks gum recession), and takes care to be so gentle but still thorough. Visits for cleaning feel like visiting an old friend! Right now, I'm doing Invisalign treatment and Jose (orthodontic assistant) is hilarious and Dr. McQuattie (orthodontist) is great! I've seen Dr. Goldberg (sidebar consult about above-mentioned gum recession) and he was a cool guy, kept it real - which actually helped me make the decision to do Invisalign (I grind my teeth and was worsening recession). My experience was traumatic. I initially went to have a tooth looked at. As it had been a while since i had seen a dentist, I was told that a full evaluation and cleaning was necessary first. The office was clean and the receptionists were courteous and there was very little wait time. The first hygienist I saw was thorough. I was then told that i would be seeing a different hygienist the next time. It was bad but I was told it was necessary. Each successive cleaning was worse than the last. It became so brutal it felt personal. I was scolded for not using an electric toothbrush. When i purchased one, I was told i didn't buy the right brand. Then i wasn't using the correct type of floss. After much bleeding and pain, we had to stop. During my discussion I was basically told that I should not return because it would reflect poorly on the office if I did. Since that visit i have had constant, severe pain in several of my teeth. Even one they initially repaired. I can't chew anything on one side of my mouth and everything I eat, or drink has to be room temperature. While my teeth may not have been in perfect condition before, I had no pain in any of them prior to these visits. I sought another dentist after the third trip. Absolutely horrible experience. I had already submitted all of my information ahead of my appointment, but when I arrived they told me they didn't have my dental insurance card. I immediately tried emailing it to them, then sat waiting for over 15 minutes while they claimed they never received it. Instead of just writing the information down (which they eventually suggested after the delay), they refused to begin any treatment until the insurance was verified -- even after I explicitly said I was willing to pay out of pocket and just wanted the work done. The most frustrating part is that all of this happened after I was already seated in the dental chair. Why wasn't this handled at check-in? Why waste my time like that? Between long delays, poor communication, and rigid, inefficient processes, I ended up walking out without being treated. This is now my second terrible experience with Gentle Dental -- once in Seattle and now in Boston. It feels like a rented, corporate operation with zero regard for patients' time. Infections deep in the gums can increase the chance of heart attacks by 20%. I had or still have two infections in my gums. The one under a tooth I wanted extracted. I was told by the head-counter person and my dentist there Dr. Navy: "We don't do extractions." He never even got back to me to further discuss this. He is horrible in answering my questions--he just does not do it. For the other infection I was told I needed deep scrapings every three months at about $630 each time. Dr. Navy's name was on the document. I got one such scrapping from a staff hygienist and it was very good, but Dr. Navy never even came in the room to see how it looked. In the entire staff at Gentle Dental Dr. Navy is the only one that is covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield MA. Dental Blue. I just did an AI check on this Gentle Dental: This is what I found: "Accusations of overcharging." "Multiple users alleged that the practice recommended unnecessary, expensive, and extensive dental work, including fillings and crowns that second opinions found unnecessary." I was experiencing pain following a root canal treatment, and I took a walk-in emergency appointment at Gentle Dental to see if there was an infection while I waited for my regular office to open. They took me almost immediately with my dental savings plan, and they offered the full exam/cleaning deal for first time customers. The facilities were clean, the wait was minimal, and I received an extensive (very fancy) set of X-rays. There were no major issues detected with my root canal, but the dentist proceeded to list off what felt like more than a dozen of cavities/teeth of concern. I was becoming very overwhelmed, and they stressed that I had a very severe cavity that needed immediate treatment. I was moving out of state and started new insurance a few weeks later, so I made an appointment with a new dentist who recommended a modest filling on one tooth--and found absolutely no other cavities. I got a second opinion as well. Really astonishing to think that they had me essentially believe that all my teeth were rotting at a point when I only had a small cavity... Hi, I bought my parents for the first exam promotion. They were currently not insured and wanted a cleaning. The exam was done without a cleaning. I've never been to a dentist that did X-ray and no cleaning. The dentist recommends deep cleaning which is ridiculously expensive if you have no insurance. Then both were giving details of huge procedures that cost so much money. The point is this location is scamming patients. They don't even provide the basic cleaning that comes with your first exam. Meant to write this a while ago, but I was in school and got caught up. Please listen to the other reviews about them lying about cavities. I have had really bad experiences with dentists in the past doing unnecessary work, so when they told me I have cavities that "urgently" needed to be fixed, I was skeptical. The only time I've ever had "cavities" was when a dentist lied to me to get money. So I went to a different dentist, didn't tell them anything about what the first dentist said and asked them about my teeth. Perfectly healthy. I then asked if they could see any cavities and they laughed. A year later, I just had more xrays done at a different dentist in a new state because I graduated from school. No cavities. I moved to the area and chose Gentle Dental for their easy scheduling--that's where the positives end. The hygienist was rough and made my gums bleed despite my consistent oral care. Dr. Hraiz claimed nearly every tooth needed work, including a crown, which a second opinion at a smaller practice confirmed was false. I couldn't believe it. I had just signed up for dental insurance to start May 1 and that morning (thankfully after a good night's sleep!) I was awake early at 5am picking at the glue and/or tarter in the back of my implant cap (it had bothtered me the entire three years I've had this implant bridge)...and it totally popped out of my mouth! So now I had a huge gap with two scary posts sticking out! I couldn't eat like that and i sure didn't want anyone seeing me be toothless! i called the dentist's office and left a message at 6am. They called at 6:30 for me to come in at 8am, so I did. I never get up and out of the house to be anywhere that early, but I was motivated (it was an emergency!). So they cleaned it, replaced a screw, adhered it, and I made it to work just 15 minutes late. I am SO GRATEFUL to the team at Cambridge Gentle Dentle at Porter Square, Cambridge for making it happen!!! Just to echo what everyone said here, avoid this dental office. It took 1.5 years to get a bill settled with them. Dr. Navy told me 6 different things that I needed to have done and wanted me to get started on them that day. He also raged against insurance companies to me. I felt like I was at a crank mechanic's place and they told me everything was wrong with the car. It felt that seedy. I just saw a different dentist entirely and he had a totally different diagnosis after doing his own x-rays. I will never go back to any Gentle Dental and can't believe they are able to exist with these shady practices. 42 North Dental is the parent company so they should be held accountable as well. Avoid at all costs! I was overdue for a cleaning and had trouble getting an appt at other practices so I decided to try this one. I went in for the initial consultation and X-Rays. The person doing the X-rays had to redo them repeatedly, could not fit the device in my mouth, made the floor of my mouth bleed, and it hurt! The dentist briefly checked my teeth, said he could see that I grind my teeth, and I'd need three crowns and a nightguard. I was skeptical and waited to get a second opinion at another practice. My new dentist gave me a thorough exam, retook some x-rays because the Gentle Dental x-rays were blurry, and said my teeth were in great shape and I didn't need any work done. I asked about grinding my teeth and the nightguard. He said he could not see any evidence of grinding and would not recommend a nightguard unless I had jaw pain or tooth damage. read more

Avoid at all costs! After getting a root canal with them, they tried to charge me thousands of extra dollars when I went back for the crown. I told them that both myself and my insurance had already paid the quoted amounts in full, but the manager would come up with inconsistent explanations as to why I "owed" them money: from the insurance not covering a "$0" amount to them having made a mistake when giving me the quotations. They were willing to let me go without my crown and only caved in when I threatened to take them to court. The clinic staff was generally rude and unprofessional. Worst experience with the billing department, especially the manager. Before the procedure I was assured that the insurance would cover part of it. I paid my part, the Insurance declined to pay theirs, and when I called this place for help, no help at all. I had to do it all by myself. All they kept telling me was that I had an amount due. I called the insurance myself to see why they did not cover my claim. They explained that the claim paperwork was not properly filled. Called this dentist place again, they resubmitted the claim, but insurance was again rejected the payment, same problem. They did not fill out the paperwork correctly. I had to do a conference call with the insurance and the manager of this place. Finally, the form was properly filled and approved. It took 4 to 6 months of continues calls for them to help with this bill. If I have not called this would not have been fixed. I had to forced them to help me. Top of that, I ended up paying more than I was supposed to, according to my insurance numbers. When I asked the manager about the difference, he came up with different numbers. The charges on the insurance did not match the charges in their books. I was too tired to fight for the difference. Lesson learned, get the insurance approve your claim before they do the work. Once you agree to have the work, they don't care to help you with the insurance part of it. read more

The most unprofessional, inconsiderate, borderline unethical dental practice I have ever interacted with. Worst healthcare experience ever. Dr. Mancini did NOT listen to my concerns post-op, and the office staff repeatedly ignored my calls and failed to call back when I called to continue raising the issue for nine consecutive months, eventually resulting in me having to get ALL the dental work re-done less than a year later. They finally listened (and issued a full refund) but only AFTER another dental office threatened to help me REALLY hold them accountable. Funny how they started to pay attention more closely after that. I came here when I didn't have dental insurance since they offer a $59 new patient special for X-rays, cleaning, dental exam. Before my appt, I asked if I needed to send them my x-rays from my previous dentist and they said no if they were taken more than 6 months ago. PROBLEMS: 1) The facilities are pretty bare minimum and look old. You can hear the personal conversation between a patient + dentist sitting right next to you (no walls, no privacy). 2) There was an older women who greeted me and I thought she was the hygienist (she was not). She took 22 images, 17 of which are individual bite-wing X-rays. INSANE. I asked her why she was taking so many since I felt HIGHLY UNCOMFORTABLE being repeatedly exposed to radiation. I'm sure she took more than 17 X-rays because the images were blurry and she kept re-taking some. I have only ever gotten 4 MAX (bite wings) or a quick panoramic full-mouth at my usual dentist office. She claimed that the exam comes with full mouth X-rays and the panoramic X-ray (which takes less than 30 seconds) exposes you to "more radiation". She also took 5 random color pictures of my teeth (+1 of MY FACE so they "can remember [you] when we look at your file later" -- like WHAT?) using a dental tool that has a camera at the end. 3) Dentist Michael Navy arrived a few mins later & just sat and answered some of my questions about dental hygiene. I honestly don't remember him taking a look at my mouth, I think he just went over my X-rays and said I don't have cavities. He highly recommends I buy an electric toothbrush - Sonicare or Phillips. Then, he tells me I have to physically move down the hall for the actual cleaning w/ hygienist. 4) Lea the hygienist is very talkative and personable, but she applied a lot of uncomfortable pressure, resting her palms and fingers on my chin and front teeth. I have never experienced that before with a hygienist. 5) At the end of the visit they hand me a sheet with 5 or 6 items ($400+ a tooth) that I should get fixed. I consulted a dentist friend who looked at my X-rays and those weird color photos and he says I don't need to do ANY of those services. The WORST after-effect I've had for the last 6 months is using the electric toothbrush the dentist recommended & having unusual clicking sounds in my jaw like it is disjointed/not aligned normally, and I can't bite or clench all the way down. I did not have a good experience at this dentist. I regret going here, wasting an hour and a half of my time. The dentist told me I had to get a root canal and basically bullied me into trying to get one. I went to another dentist and they told me I had a small cracked tooth and it just needed to be fixed. NO ROOT CANAL NEEDED. A root canal was gonna cost around $3,000. The nurse at Gentle Dental was trying to comfort me saying to me that she had 11 root canals. I have been a patient of Dr. Mancini's for close to 10 years. He use to work in the Jamaica Plain Gentle Dentle office before moving to the Cambridge office. I like him and his work so much that I followed him to the Cambridge office and I know some of his other patients did also. It can be hard to find a great Dr. whether it is a Dentist, PCP or other specialist. So when I find one I like to stick with them. Dr. Mancini is a great dentist and very caring and always responds to people when something urgent comes up. I am a heavy grinder of my teeth when I sleep and needed some work on a couple of my teeth. He explained the procedure for a crown and root canal if it would be needed or not for each tooth. I have many fillings unfortunately. We talked about how to prevent some issues with my old fillings to save my teeth and he never pushed any procedures that were not needed. I usually ask for more because I want to prevent any bad dental issues from happening because tooth pain is the worst, for me anyway. Dr. Agha-Razi was the Endodontists in his office in Jamaica Plain and was also excellent. I have not had to have a root canal in the Cambridge office but I am sure whom ever Dr. Mancini has working there will be great. As are all the staff from the front desk to the hygienist and assistants and billing department. The Billing department has been spot on with the cost of any procedures I ask them about getting or have needed. I am writing this because I see that recently a couple of people have written negative reviews about the Gentle Dental and Dr. Mancini and I find them hard to believe. He is in my opinion a great person as well as a caring Dentist. When you are a great leader such as him the people around you will act the same and his staff represent him well. There are three sides to every story. On here you read positive and negative reviews. Last Friday I came in to see Dr. Navy since I was experiencing significant pain in the one of the teeth in the back of my mouth. He rushed through the exam and quickly decided that the symptoms were caused by a "gum recession", even though as I tried to explain the pain felt more like an infection or fracture, which I've experienced before. He insisted that it was the recession, and told me there was no treatment for it. When asked him how could there be no treatment for this level of chronic pain, he said, "teeth suck, you just have to avoid drinking anything cold" (for the rest of my life, apparently). When I mentioned that I saw another dentist that day (for a temporary crown), he said, "that doesn't make sense but whatever". Who talks like that to a patient? As an architect if I talked like that to one of my clients I would be fired, but apparently there is no such oversight here. I have never met a dentist who was this rude and completely dismissive. When I asked for some stronger pain medication he refused to give me any and grilled me on why I was asking for it when another dentist had already prescribed Tylenol (which was very weak). Maybe, Dr. Navy, you should concern yourself more with treating the symptoms of the pain rather than judging your patients. The whole weekend I felt completely at a loss and thought that there's no possible way that the pain I'm experiencing was something that couldn't be cured, and after looking up symptoms of "gum recession" I knew it couldn't possibly be the cause. Fortunately I was able to visit a better, more empathetic dentist on Monday, and they quickly identified that one of my teeth had a fracture, which Dr. Navy apparently missed in his cursory exam. I ended up getting a root canal the same day and now the pain is gone. The only reason I'm not giving this place one star is because the specialists that come in once a week, Dr. Koch (endodontist) and Dr. Goldberg (Periodontists) are fantastic and actually know how to talk to patients. However they go to other Gentle Dental locations four days a week, so this place doesn't get much credit for them in my book. read more

I receive botox from Dr. Li for migraine and tmj treatment. I've found that the botox makes a huge difference with my condition, it decreases both the number of migraines per month and the severity of each one significantly. Dr. Li is a great doctor and very experienced providing this service, I wouldn't go anywhere else for this! Additionally, I did invisalign with Dr. McQuattie and I found the experience to be perfect, everything from low wait times to her great expertise aligning my teeth (which, in addition to now looking great I believe is also helping with tmj) was top notch. read more

Do not go!! Whatever they tell you, get a second opinion somewhere else. I was told I needed a root canal and 10 fillings when I was having no pain and only needed one filling according to another dentist's office. I now have intense jaw pain from low quality fillings I didn't need. I shelled out too much money on services they insisted I do. I've gone SEVERAL unnecessary times over the past year and have hit my maximum insurance coverage, so I have to pay out of pocket to undo this damage at a different dentist's office. The front desk is rude, the entire staff is rude, and they spring hidden $100+ fees on you at the END of the appointment, when they tell you beforehand that everything is covered. Dental care is fine, I've had several cleanings and a two-session deep cleaning, as well as two of my wisdom teeth out. My issue is with their bait and switch billing. Under my insurance (blue cross) normal cleanings are free. I paid for my two deep cleanings in cash because I believe there was some type of "discount for doing so." I once inquired about wisdom teeth removal and was quoted my out of pocket cost would only be $200-ish dollars (May have been $220 or something). So I made the appointment. I get there, I'm in the chair and they hand me an invoice for $1200 out of pocket dollars. So I pointed to the guy who handed me the invoice and said "YOU quoted me $200 when YOU and I scheduled this appointment!" He then stated I had used up what my insurance would cover for the year (this was 2 days before Xmas so I was like "then we'll reschedule this for after the new year, I'm not paying that." He then said "hold on..." and came back and said that my top wisdom teeth are very "straight-forward removals" and would only cost me $99-ish dollars. (May have been $96, may have been $102... I forget). So I do it. Now I get bills in the mail for $400. I still have 2 impacted lower wisdom teeth, so I'm not sure why the bill is 4x what I was quoted, but this is now a pattern and I say SCREW THIS COMPANY AND THEIR SHADY, UNETHICAL BILLING PRACTICES. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I haven't had a cleaning in a few years, so I was overdue and decided to try out the Gentle Dental by my house. I scheduled the appointment for a cleaning and filled out my medical history online. I was 30 minutes early for my 6:30pm appointment, so I ended up waiting a while. But that was fine cause I was early. BUT about 20 minutes or so after I was waiting, another woman came in. And at 6:30 they took HER downstairs. I waited another 5 minutes, then was finally annoyed and asked how much longer. The woman at reception said something like, "It's only 6:37, they don't always start right at 6:30." That was pretty damn rude. She didn't apologize for the wait or acknowledge that they took someone to their appointment who had only been waiting a fraction of the time I had been waiting. Finally at 6:40ish they take me downstairs and I find out the cleaning I HAD SCHEDULED wasn't being done that day, just the exam. So I would have to schedule ANOTHER appointment for the cleaning, which is what I was there for in the first place. I was so pissed off, I just left. I came here once a few years ago for a routine cleaning and exam. Prior to the cleaning they handed me a sheet with pictures of mouth cancer to convince me to pay for an out of pocket test to check for cancer. I had never had this test done and agreed to do it, but afterwards realized how unnecessary this was and I didn't appreciate the scare tactics. I was shocked to hear that I had 3 cavities, when I have never had cavities before in my life. I was urged to schedule fillings right away. I left the office feeling uncomfortable and decided to get a second opinion. I was told I did not have any cavities. Since visiting Gentle Dental due to moving and switching jobs I have seen 3 other dentists who have not found any cavities. I have been going here for 20 years now, even though I've moved to a town 20 minutes away. Dr Van der Rydt is a gem. He has such a wealth of experience and such a deft touch and a keen eye. His staff are absolutely lovely. I've visited 3 times since Covid reopening, for a cleaning and a crown+filling, and they are awesome with precautions and safety. I hate to write a bad review, but I had a bad experience at Gentle Dental in Porter. I went awhile back, probably a year now. I did not have dental insurance at the time and planned to pay out of pocket. I had x-rays done for the first time in about a year. I was told I had 12 cavities! I was so upset because I had been taking very good care of my teeth. They drew up a bill for me and it was thousands of dollars. I couldn't afford to get the work done at that moment. Last week I went to a new dentist in Cambridge, now with dental insurance, and ready to pay and do what needed to be done. After X-rays I was told I had ZERO cavities. How in the world did Gentle Dental think I had 12 a year ago?! Did the dentist now know how to read the X-rays or were they trying to get money from me?! I have no idea. 5 years ago, I went to Gentle Dental to get my wisdom teeth (and another broken tooth) extracted. Yesterday, that decision tried to KILL me when my otherwise healthy right rear molar inexplicably split in half and lodged in my throat. Last year I had to have a root canal on yet another adjacent tooth he damaged. Gee, Dr. Dimwit, what did you think would happen when you pulled 5 teeth in 10 minutes of wrenching, yanking, twisting and playing demolition derby on my jaw with no regard for the rest of the mouth? Or that they charged something like $1500 for this short, brutal "service" during which he bitched non-stop about his receptionists for booking me in right before lunch? Really?! You demolished my mouth so you could get to lunch on time? Good god, even if you'd been really good with my teeth, your behavior is atrocious. You have complaints about your staff? Take it up with them - or your therapist. Not with your patient while you yank BITS & PIECES of teeth YOU BROKE out of his mouth SO VIOLENTLY that he couldn't turn his neck for a week. A WEEK! My jaw didn't feel better for an entire month! And what could I say about it? My entire mouth was numbed and bleeding out of 5 holes - every time I tried to open my mouth blood gushed forth. By the time I'm done fixing his fucking carelessness - no wait - MALICIOUS NEGLIGENCE - it'll probably cost me upwards of TEN GRAND in dental work - extractions, root canals, implants and caps, oh my. So no, I don't recommend Gentle Dental at all. Any of them, but especially not this one. I wish I remembered the specific dentist's name, because maybe there are a few good ones. Despite the mediocre 3 stars Gental Dentle of Cambridge recieved from Yelpers, I chose their services over the multitude of dentists in the Camberville area. Two very good friends recommended them as being good enough, fairly priced, competent, etc. From now on, I will believe Yelpers and not my friends. I called to make an appointment as a new patient. This not being my first time looking for a new dentist (I have moved a few times in the last 6 years), I expected a list of questions from them. They asked my name and that was all. I said I would like to ensure that they accept my insurance, so they asked what care I had, and I told them. They said of course, no problem. I asked if they needed the group number or subscriber number, and they said nope. I asked if I should have my old dentist forward XRays, charts, etc to them, and they said no. They said I would fill out paper work when I arrived for my appointment. Flash forward to appointment. I am given paperwork to fill out by the receptionist. I hold out my insurance card and ask if she needs to look at it. She says no, your insurance will cover it. I say, but you don't have my subscriber/goup number. She says, just fill out the paperwork. I do. Ten minutes later, I hand her the filled out forms. She looks at them and says, my insurance covers only 20%, but I could pay a $97 copay and get the deal of $57 for an initial visit, and my insurance would cover 20% of the $57. I say WTF?! She says that this is actually a pretty good deal. I say no thanks, I'd like the insurance to which I pay a monthly sum to cover 100% of my visit, with the exception of maybe a $10 copay.
