My wife and I wanted to try somewhere new, so we ended up at Pizza Cellar. We got there around 2 PM and apparently everyone else in town had the same plan. The place was packed. We didn't spend much time deciding. Pizza with Italian sausage, mushrooms, black olives and onions, three layer lasagna with a salad, and BBQ wings. I had a Diet Coke. Later I saw the piña colada and decided I had to try one, but non-alcoholic since I still had a long drive home. Everything hit the spot after a morning on the lake. The pizza had plenty of toppings, I really liked the lasagna, and the BBQ wings came with garlic bread and two sauces. I finished with a cannoli, which was actually my first time trying one. The biggest surprise was the price. Around $47 for two people with all that food, drinks and dessert. These days, I'll take that. And then there is the place itself. Pizza Cellar is literally downstairs in a basement. You can tell it's been around for a while, and that's part of what I liked about it. It's old, but not in a bad way. It has character. Nothing fancy, nothing trying to look new just for the sake of looking new. Just a busy local place full of people eating Sunday lunch. After a good morning of fishing, this was exactly where I needed to end up. Good food, fair prices, and a place I'll remember. Next time I'm fishing around here, I already know where lunch is.

First, the good: the sauce is nice, not too sweet and not too thin. There was plenty of sausage on my pizza. The not-great: I suspect the crusts are pre-made. While the thin was really thin, it was still soft in the center. The cheese isn't gooey, but more gloppy. The "hot" sausage is just Italian sausage; not spicy Italian, just Italian. The questionable: the menu says the toasted ravioli is filled with nacho cheese. As a native St. Louisan, that is unforgivable. The salad bar is offered at $2.99 for a one-trip with a meal, or $4.99 unlimited. The "bar" consists of very basic iceberg mix, some cheese, and an assortment of dressings. If the selection is that limited, it should be really fresh and inviting. It was not. All in all, I'll give them more time to get settled, and try again. We love supporting local businesses, and hope this place is successful.

We ordered the MR. GILBERTI'S SPECIALTY which was a deep dish pizza with Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, Black Olives, Mushrooms, Marinated Green Peppers & Red Onions. SMALL 28.50 * MEDIUM 34.25 * LARGE 40.95. This is not your typical thick bread Chicago style pizza that you're accustomed to. Instead this was a crust which is more dense and approaching a cracker like consistency around the edges. It seems that the cheese is laid down first with the rest of the toppings layered on top and the sauce is the last thing that goes on. It's like an upside down pizza. However if you think about it, it's brilliant because the sauce doesn't make the crust get soggy on the bottom since it is on the top. My wife and I both agreed that it was one of the best tasting pizzas that we'd ever had. And a small was plenty for the two of us. For dessert we ordered the strawberry cream cake which was made in the house by a culinary school graduate who just also happened to be the owner. The strawberry cake layers were separated by a cheesecake filling. It was to-the-moon delicious. This is one of those rare restaurant finds. It's the kind of place you just might drive by without giving it a second thought. But I'll tell you, we are so glad that we took a chance because the pizza was fantastic. Salad for 2: $20.75 and the salad is smaller than it ever used to be. Toppings aren't as plentiful as they used to be. And the dressing...the salad didn't have squat. And I paid 2.50 more to get a couple of sides of more dressing....and they're coming in the small plastic ramekin. Gee, give me a break with the nickel and dime junk...when you're already charging $21 for the salad. I have always loved this place.
