Stopped by Castaways for an early weekday lunch. First of all--their patio. Gorgeous! If you're looking for a spot to dine on a pleasant day, I would recommend this spot without reservation. It's right on the lake and I felt myself immediately relax into the sunshine and views. If you look at my pics, it looks a bit hazy. Canadian wildfires were causing some smoke and haze but on a brilliant sunshiny day this spot would be outstanding. We arrived around 11:30am and were able to be seated straight away and order. As we sat, the patio definitely began to fill though! For my lunch I got their grilled salmon salad. It comes with grilled salmon over a bed of greens with cucumber, onions, tomato, and mandarin oranges with a side of ranch. All the ingredients were wonderfully fresh. OMG, NO, JUST NO!!! My friend and I go out to eat regularly. We happened to be in Webster and she heard of this restaurant and wanted to try it. First, we sat at the bar while we waited what the waitress said was 40 minutes (turned out to me much longer as people were clearly seated before us and came in after us!) The drinks we ordered were good but steeply priced at $12 for a small plastic cup loaded with ice. The bar tender was a little snotty at first but then lightened up and we liked him. Our 40 minute wait turned out to be at least an hour and half. Finally we were seated. We had already decided what we would try for dinner. I chose the coconut shrimp which I always get and love. I ordered it with cole slaw. We told the waiter we wanted separate checks which today with the technology is very easy. My friend ordered the fish fry with rice "pilaf" and coleslaw. We waited a long while for our food. We asked for water and waited at least 20 minutes and even though I asked for lemon and straws none were delivered. Another long wait as I won't drink from the glass directly. Finally got that and another maybe 45 minute wait for our entrees. The plate was bare and overly empty as 6 shrimp lay flat on the plate and a bowl of slaw sat on the other side of the plate. O M G. Have you ever eaten plain shredded cabbage with very watery mayo over it? No flavor at all and no carrots or anything extra just watery , inedible cabbage. Strike one. So I was excited to try the shrimp hoping it tasted much better than it looked. Nope. Cardboard with cooked wheat flour and a piece of coconut here and there enough to attempt to identify it as having coconut. Shrimp was dry as cardboard and tasteless. Not even enough coconut to get stuck in my teeth! The sauce to disguise the horrible flavorless shrimp was horrible so I asked for cocktail sauce which at least added some flavor. We were starving so we ate and did not see our server for at least another 45 minutes or I would have complained. Overall sincerely the worst meal I have EVER had. I would have been happier sacrificing the $32 that this pathetic entree cost by tossing it to the lake gods for offering us a lovely sunset. I won't talk about my friends fish fry. It was soggy and tasteless and the "pilaf" inedible as was the coleslaw. She wasted even more $ on her food (with a dessert) with the very mediocre key lime pie which was promised to be the best in the area. (Another big NOPE). She also had bruschetta which I tried and it was disgusting but again we were starved. I ordered the seafood bisque)we had these while waiting at the bar. The bisque was ok probably from a can and again the wait being so long I would have eaten saltines alone. Overall I can truthfully say for both my friend and I that it was the absolute WORST dining experience of our adult lives. I will NEVER return and will tell EVERYONE I know to stay FAR FAR AWAY!! You can go up on the berm and watch the same sunset. It would have been much more pleasant. Between us we WASTED well over $100. Everything fell wayyyyy short with absolutely nothing at all up to par. "Food" incredibly overpriced and I would not have been happy with my meal at half the price and I speak for my friend as well. Horrible service, horribly crowded, horrible excuse for what they call food. I call it something I would not even give to a pet. Obviously our advice is to find another place to spend all that $. Visited for lunch on 7/15. The orange look is not a fire but the effects of the Canadian wild fires. Castaways is tucked away overlooking Lake Ontario. Although the view wasn't as planned it was still gorgeous. The waitress was very attentive and friendly. The salad was ok. I had the blackened chicken and I wasn't a particular fan of the spices but it doesn't deter me from returning in the future. I'd say 11:30 when they open is a perfect time to get there for lunch as they were very busy when I left slightly before 12:30. read more

Let me start by saying the view at The Castaway on Lake Road is absolutely breathtaking and easily the best part of the experience. Unfortunately, everything else fell short. The food was just okay, but definitely not worth the price. When I'm ordering prime rib, I don't expect everything else to be served in plastic--even our drinks came in plastic, which really took away from the experience. The appetizer was especially disappointing: extremely expensive for a very small portion. Overall, the restaurant charges upscale prices but doesn't deliver an upscale ambiance or level of service. The service was subpar, and to make matters worse, our table was wobbly, which added to the frustration. I feel the need to warn others: do NOT order the salad from this restaurant. The $24 shrimp and scallop salad was incredibly disappointing. It looked like the lettuce came straight from a $2.99 bag you'd pick up at Wegmans, and it came with only four tiny shrimp and four tiny scallops--definitely not worth the price. To make matters worse, it was served in a wooden bowl that was so unappealing I wouldn't even let my dog drink water from it. Another person in our group ordered a pasta dish with a TINY BIT OF lobster that cost $50--yes, $50. Called to try to make a Father's Day reservation in advance and was told it was first come first serve. We decided to come at 4:30 and have time to wait for a table. When we got there we were told 30 minutes so we grabbed a drink and sat. After 45 mins we went to the host stand and were told 25 more minutes. We were fine with this as it is a busy day. This happened 2 more times. Finally the last time at around 6:20 they told us it would be at least another 45. We decided to leave. If we knew how long we would be waiting we would have gone somewhere else! Train the hosts to be honest. Very frustrating to have waiting so long and not even be able to eat. read more

Was looking forward to dinner at Castaways for a long time. Unfortunately it didn't meet my expectations. The server was abrupt, no eye contact, very curt. The menu selections were great as was the view. Nice seating indoors, outdoors under a cover with heaters, or right out on the open deck. The steak was overcooked and tough, a little of bites uneatable, vegetables luke warm, potatoes were not hot seemed like they had been sitting around. The Mediterranean haddock was very soupy and had a lot of feta to the point it was overpowering. I couldn't really taste the fish. We were told no reservation unless a party of 6 or more. When we arrived the wait was 45 minutes of which we waited patiently to be called. We noticed several parties that came after being seated ahead of us. After another hour wait we asked the hostess where we were on the list she stated one party ahead of us she seated at least 3 or 4 parties that she knew ahead so she lied. We left and went elsewhere. Come here during sunset just for the view as the food isn't that great and also pricey. There are chairs on the edge overlooking the lake, so you can come here for a drink instead of dinner. We came here for a date night. As you walk into the back, the view of the lake is gorgeous as you dine. To start off, our table had the Bruschetta Bread ($10) with 4 pieces of bread. The melted cheese on top was something different, but a nice starter. For my main course, I had the Seafood Saute ($39). This was essentially a linguine pasta topped with various seafood. The broth was salty, yet bland. It was also a bit messy to eat with the shells from the clam and the noodles splattering around with each bite. Because of how pricey this dish was, I managed to eat most of this dish even though it wasn't that appetizing. I did also get a side of vegetables that came with the pasta. I also tried some of the boyfriend's New York Strip Steak ($39), which was a bit overcooked. First of all, the view of Lake Ontario is the best anywhere around Rochester. This is the place to go for a summer sunset. The interior is a little dated, but the bathrooms were clean. The menu is seafood heavy, but 2 out of 3 of us are not seafood lovers and we enjoyed our meals. I had the Prime Pork Porter House Chop with mushrooms, roasted red peppers finished with a marsala demi glaze. I opted for no mushrooms and this was a delicious, perfectly cooked, tender and flavorful chop. I recommend the Shipwreck cocktail as a summer must-have. We split a slice of carrot cake which was delicious, since our first choice of Italian lemon cake was sold out. I don't know if desserts are made in house, but they're good. I wish I remembered to take food photos, but only took sunset photos. The food is good, but not the star of the show. read more

Castaways on the lake in Webster was the chosen destination for our date night dinner. We did not have a reservation so we did expect that there would be a wait time. We were told 20-25 minutes by the very young hostess and then about a half hour later I checked again where I was told it would be another 20-25 minutes by the same hostess . It was okay though as we got lucky and there were 2 barstool's available so I got a cranberry and vodka short which was $9.00 and my significant other just got a glass of ice water with lemon. The bar tenders were very busy but the older one was pleasant and took a minute to exchange pleasantries with us so that was nice. When we were finally seated outside the view was worth the wait. Our waitress came a short time later and took our drink, appetizers and main dish order. She was also very pleasant but very busy. Our stuffed mushroom appetizer came a short time later they were hot and tasted okay I have by far had way better stuffed mushrooms elsewhere. When our food came a short time later it wasn't worth the price. My significant other got the broiled haddock with the rice ( that was the best part of his meal) and a vegetable. Because his haddock tasted okay as the rest of his meal did. I got the vegetable cakes a vegetarian version of a crab cake. Which was good it could've been a little warmer and the Cole slaw was very good but the French fries weren't warm and were definitely not to my liking. Horrible service - restaurant management issue- We went around 4:20 when it was t very busy. And it took forever for the waitress to come and take a drink order. After taking our drink order the waitress said she was going to check in the specials and come right back. 20 minutes later, she came back and took our food order and we put in an additional drink order because of her lack of attentiveness he had ordered appetizers and after half an hour after we had ordered, nothing had come to the table when she did come she was carrying a tray with both of our dinners and the appetizer which was cold. She blamed it on the kitchen, but during that whole time we kept seeing her go to one table to another and not be productive at all, it was like she had a terrible case of ADHD. She blamed everything on the kitchen when we finally left it was packed and there were several people waiting for tables. I feel bad for Them. We walked out behind our waitress and overheard her say oh my God everyone's at a different stage I can't handle this. That's literally your job. The food was OK. It was mostly cold. We won't be coming back again unless we read the management is better. At the time we were there , my husband counted more than 15 people on staff and maybe 15 tables being served. Martini and Manhattan = $38. - just okay. 10 minute "wait time " turned into 30, seated / took another 20 minutes after asking if there was a server. Experience would have been better if I didn't have an uncomfortable experience with a racist staff member (warning). Today I went to this restaurant to treat my boyfriend and his dad to a nice dinner while enjoying the views of Lake Ontario during sundown. I heard of this restaurant prior to coming here since my boyfriend came here a few months ago to visit friends and family and they stopped and ate here/had a good experience. Just to give you the specs of my group this evening; my boyfriend and his dad are from western European descent while I'm Japanese/Korean. When I first arrived at the restaurant I wanted to wash my hands before eating since I had pet a ton of friendly dogs/ I also held the door open for people leaving as well as for my boyfriend's dad to come in. I went to the bathroom for just a few minutes and when I came out I couldn't see either of them so I assumed they were seated by the hosts. There were two staff members present at the entrance when all three of us walked in so I asked one of the staff members if they have seen where my boyfriend and his dad went and I immediately got a rude response back saying that she doesn't know, more specifically her saying, "how would I know". I think the other staff member noticed the rudeness and told me they were seated outside. Thank you other staff member. I found our table and I just sat there trying to comprehend what happened because there wasn't any reason why this lady was so mean to me for no reason (I wasn't blocking her way or the entrance, there was no line behind me, ect) so I assumed she was just having a tough night. I completely understand working in the food service industry can be tough and she might have had a bad day or something so I just brushed it off because I intended to have a good time with my boyfriend and his dad before heading off to NYC tomorrow. BUT then this is the reason why I wrote this review; the same staff member goes and talks near the bar to some other colleagues and says a racist joke about me; I clearly heard her say "so she didn't ask for Chinese food?". My appetite immediately went down after hearing that. I really tried my best to have positive thoughts on people but this was incredibly disrespectful. Thankfully, our waitress was really kind to us and the other staff assisting her. There was actually a time where the racist staff member briefly came when our food was ready and she yapped at a staff member who placed our food on our table instead of the table on the side before presenting it to us. I also heard this same lady complain at the bar again about a new guy mixing up drinks or something- instead of venting it in a place where customers can hear you everything you say I would probably just go and help the new guy out or tell this to them in a more "employees only" area where another staff member could help that guy out. I can honestly say I felt uncomfortable from this whole experience just by that one staff member treating her own colleagues and myself with such disrespect (now I know the difference between good and bad servers). I couldn't down my food but it might have been delicious if my appetite didn't drop from all of things I mentioned above. I wanted to write this post in case some other people have had same experiences with this waiter, I'll attach a photo (she managed to photobomb one of my Snapchat videos so I luckily got a photo of her) The plus side was that the sunset was beautiful, there was space for parking. So, let me start by saying that I own a restaurant in Toronto and i a loathe to slam a place knowing how hard this business is, but this occasion totally missed the mark when it Should have been properly handled. We had a 7:30 reservation for our friends anniversary who live in Webster and highly recommended this place after being there many many times. We came from Toronto to celebrate their anniversary with them and dinner was on us. It was very busy when we got there on time and after some cajoling we got a table outside. Beautiful view,, can't beat it!, We didnt see a server for 15 minutes but when she came we ordered drinks and an appetizer to start. 25 minutes later we got our bottle of beer, glass of wine and 2 margaritas. At the 50 minute mark, no appetizer had shown up yet when we had to ask the server if we could maybe order our mains??? One hour comes around and finally our quite cool mushroom app shows up. Although fairly cool they were quite good. Server didnt come back as she was in the weeds busy.... 90 minutes...that's right,,,an hour and a half later our food showed up...and it was wrong and incomplete.. mine was chicken French over pasta and it had to be removed and cool pasta shoved under it.... The stuffed haddock had no potato with it for 10 minutes as they didn't have any...the server did bring rice tho which my friend didn't want. Now I get it after being in the business for 17 years, but here's what I don't get.... Firstly... they were busy when we came in and perhaps the hostess should have advised us there may be a delay in getting food...but no... not a word The server might well have mentioned the kitchen was rammed and have patience... by the time we got our food the place was very empty.... I got up from the table and asked the longer haired young. man bussing to ask the manager to come see me.... Server told us the owner and manager knew about what happened,,, ok, great... The bill came and they had taken a margarita and a glass of wine off our bill, and had comped 2 desserts, but NEITHER the manager NOR the owner bothered to show their faces to apologize for ruining my friends anniversary.. Sorry.... That kind of behaviour in a supposed higher end restaurant is totally unacceptable. This could have been handled very differently and they would have not felt bad recommending the place nor having their anniversary tanked, Sadly they live in Webster so I can bet a lot more people are going to hear of this completely shitty restaurant owners behaviour, What the heck is wrong with people. You own a business, you messed up badly..and you can't be bothered to say sorry. We won't ever be back and sadly our friends, who were your neighbours and customers won't be back either. Where to even start? It's just bad. The view is great! The food is horrible. They could have a goldmine here if they served great food, cleaned the place up, and hired friendly staff. It's so dark and dingy inside, the bathroom was filthy. Calamari is bad, had some of the worst flavorless mussels I've ever eaten. 2 appetizers and 8 drinks (4ppl) and it's $175 ?? The table wasn't cleared after the appetizer, food was brought out at very different times causing some people to have their food while others continued to wait after already waiting awhile.
