Physically, a very nice place - a view over Irondequoit Bay at some tables. It really needs some sound bafflers, though, because the noise of talking in the bar area is overwhelming. Good parking and really nice waitstaff. The wine was a generous pour, which is always nice... but then we ate. Our first course was a "shrimp cocktail", which was six giant shrimp that had long outgrown their flavor, and a cocktail sauce that was extremely heavy on the horseradish. Second course: I had the Italian Wedding Soup. Husband had a side salad which he said was just fine. The soup was a large bowl of soup, and by the time we got halfway through, our entrees arrived, so we set the entrees aside to finish our sides. The soup was fairly tasteless; in fact it was very similar to the Progresso canned soup of the same name. I couldn't eat it all. A cup of soup would have worked much better. And then we turned to our entrees. Mine was Chicken Parmigiana and husband had spaghetti with marinara with a chicken cutlet. The amount of spaghetti in the big white bowl was - and I am not exaggerating - about the size of a soccer ball, with the chicken riding on top. The marinara on my husband's pasta tasted like tomato sauce without much of anything else. The Vodka sauce on mine was better. Cardinal sin of Italian dining: there was water in my husband's pasta that mingled with the sauce until it was like tomato soup. But why am I complaining about too much food, even when it wasn't that tasty? Because it didn't feel like dining, it felt like feeding time at the zoo. I suggest they concentrate their portions a bit and add flavor. I hope their $58 steaks are better. We brought home our leftovers, but we're going to add some veggies & spices to them. I've been to Capitano several times now, and it's consistently a solid spot for a relaxed meal by the water. The food has always been good across the board. I've worked my way through a few of their pasta dishes, but the spicy rigatoni is easily my go-to. It has the right balance of heat and flavor without being overwhelming. The setting is a big plus as well--being right by the bay gives it a nice view and a laid-back feel that makes it great for both casual dinners and slightly nicer nights out. The only real downside I've noticed is that service can be slow at times. That said, it feels more like they're understaffed than an issue with the servers themselves, who have always been polite and attentive once they get to you. My wife wasn't quite ready as we just dat down. 10+ minutes latest we ordered drinks. From that point on, service was awful. Other people were getting orders in, drinks delivered, and cashing out. Our server seemed overwhelmed and pissed to be working tonight. We'll be back in the spring/summer. But we'll sit at the bar from now on. Wow! Just wow. We decided to try Capitano's for the first time last night, and I can confidently say it's one of the best dining experiences we've had in a long time. From the moment we walked in, we were treated like regulars. The service was absolutely top-notch--attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable without ever being intrusive. We started our evening with some cocktails, which were creative and perfectly mixed. A great sign of things to come! For an appetizer, we went with the calamari, and it was cooked to perfection--lightly crispy and not at all chewy, with a delicious dipping sauce. Next up were the wedge salads. It's a classic, but they do it right here. The lettuce was crisp, the dressing was flavorful, and the toppings were generous. For our main courses, our table got a variety of dishes, and every single one was a home run. Spicy Rigatoni: Had a fantastic kick to it! The pasta was perfectly al dente, and the sauce was rich and clung to every piece. Hot Honey & Pepperoni Pizza: The perfect balance of sweet and spicy. The crust was amazing--chewy with a great char. A must-try for pizza lovers. 7-Layer Lasagna: This was a masterpiece. You could taste the care that went into every single layer. It was rich, cheesy, and incredibly satisfying. I wanted to give it FOUR STARS. The service was perfect. The food was perfect and when I say perfect, it was the best red clam sauce I've ever had. The waitress was just as good as you would ever hope. The problem was a few things. First of all, it was extremely loud, so loud almost every conversation I had to ask what the person next to me said I asked the other three people at my table and they all agreed. Second problem it was very cold. They had extra heaters, but I had a feeling it was probably about 65°. It was even colder the one time I went to the bathroom. And then finally, although not the waitress's fault it took very, very long with the spread between the salad and the entrée. Granted everything's these days are expensive, but for $250 before tip, the problems I mentioned should not have happened I'm looking forward to coming back, but I probably would want to eat outside when the weather is good because of how loud it was. Went to Capitano's for an event and it was very nice. This location has changed names throughout the years so you may be familiar with it, located right by the bay in Webster. The service was good, food was surprisingly very good and very large portions. I ordered the lobster/shrimp risotto, tried the pizza (very good) and picked on calamari. I had dinner at Capitano Steak and Seafood last Friday and ordered the gnocchi, which the staff highly recommended as being made fresh and served with marinara sauce. Unfortunately, it was one of the worst Italian dishes I've had in a long time. The meal itself was very underwhelming, and later that evening, I became sick with what appeared to be food poisoning. I called the restaurant twice afterward to explain what happened. Both times, the staff were apologetic and told me a manager would contact me, but I never received a callback. What stood out most was how sharply my experience contrasted with the other reviews. With so many outstanding Italian restaurants in Rochester, I would confidently recommend Tony D's, Mr. Dominic's at the Lake, or Compane Trattoria over this restaurant. read more

We were in the area for 3 days- 2 of those days we chose to eat at Capitano's. The restaurant is very clean and has an amazing water view. Our server Tiffany was the best of the best! She gave us recommendations and knew the menu well. She was the reason we came back the next day. Everything we ate was delicious. The brownie cheesecake dessert was delicious and the lobster bisque has huge pieces of lobster (served on Saturdays) many people comment that the restaurant is loud and it was hard to hold a conversation, we did not find that to be true on a Friday or Saturday night. The portions are huge and worth the price. Plenty of leftovers to enjoy later. We will definitely be back on our next trip and hope to see Tiffany again. read more

Do not recommend. They charge premium prices but this is far from fine dining. We sat on the outdoor patio which is a lovely spot, great view of the bay. But the tables were not set, there were no napkins or silverware. There was one waitress for the whole outdoor seating area. The drinks were served in plastic cups. Price for a chopped salad is $26, for an arugula salad, $24. They served our dinner salads and we didn't have any silverware. We asked for some, and after waiting for over 5 minutes, I got up and got it myself. I had a seafood pasta dish, and it was served with home made pasta that was mushy, and tasted like egg. The sauce was good, but why serve seafood with egg? My wife's pasta was completely overcooked. Overall, very disappointing. read more

The food was great. However it took an hour and a half to get it. For a party of 2. I have never complained in my life but I think I would still be waiting for our drinks and food if I hadn't. It was 30 minutes before our waitress came over to greet us, an hour for us to get bread. At one point, I waited 30 minutes for a glass of wine and when we said something our the manager suddenly appeared with food and drinks but the food had clearly been sitting under a heat lamp for awhile. Obviously there were some seriously major service issues with our server and I just wish both the server and the management had handled it a little bit differently. A simple sincere apology admitting that our situation was less than ideal would have been great honestly . People who were seated a half hour after us were already done and leaving before we even got our entrées. But the biggest problem was that it took 3 hours for our food to come. They were very good about adjusting the check because of that. I had lunch with several co workers. It was my first time here and I planned the lunch so I was especially happy that everything was so good. All my friends really enjoyed their meals. I had the fish fry and a house salad with the lemon vinaigrette. Both were excellent. I loved the dressing on the salad. A couple of my friends had the chicken French sandwich. They thought it was great. I tried the sauce and I agree. I will definitely order Chicken French when I go again. It had a great combination of lemon and sherry.
