Started with a lemon drop martini, it was good but they forgot the sugar rim on the second one. The food was very good during the private party and it consisted of truffle mac n cheese, beef short ribs, and salmon, with sides of mushrooms, asparagus, and mashed potatoes. We visit Next Door a few times a year, and every time we're reminded why it's one of the best dining experiences in Rochester. Honestly, we should go more often because everything -- the service, the atmosphere, the menu -- is consistently impeccable. The menu changes periodically, which means some favorites come and go, but they're always replaced by new standouts. On our latest visit, we enjoyed a leisurely dinner on the beautiful patio near the wood fireplace, and the experience was perfect from start to finish. The miso soup was unique and deeply flavorful, with shrimp, tofu, and luxurious shimeji mushrooms. The baby gem and watercress salad surprised us with its creamy wasabi-cucumber dressing and refreshing crunch -- unexpectedly delicious. The grilled zucchini, glazed with honey soy and tarragon miso, was fantastic, especially where it had a bit of char. The sushi rolls were all incredibly fresh and perfectly balanced -- from the spicy yellowtail with serrano chili to the tempura shrimp with toasted coconut, to the inventive veggie and red dragon rolls. And for dessert, we tried the Chocolate Sensation, which honestly deserves a better menu description -- the sobacha, hazelnut, miso milk jam, and white chocolate ice cream combination sounds unusual, but it was outstanding and should not be missed. Next Door remains at the top of our list for high-end dining in the Rochester area. If you haven't been, put it on your list -- it really can't be beat. We were pleasantly surprised when we came back to dine at Next Door, and found that they had revamped their entire menu as well as the interior decor. I love the new gold accents, from table lamps, to wall paintings, to chairs, to plants and even their plates. Service was excellent as usual and the food was amazing. We started off with the tuna tartare which melts in your mouth. Paired with the rice chip, avocado and yuzu sauce, it was like eating a symphony in your mouth. Just like Remy in Ratatouille said, when you combine two things, new flavors are created. Next we're the seared salmon, seared, scallops and seared wagyu. When I say they melt in your mouth, I mean they MELT in your mouth. My favorite was the salmon, followed by the wagyu and then the scallops. Honestly they were so good. Then came the roasted eggplant and they had the coolest bamboo sticks that you use to consume in one bite. The crispy rice on top complemented the eggplant so well. A delight with every bite. Finally we ended our meal with the grass fed ribeye which was savory, flavorful, tender and grilled perfectly to medium-rare. I loved how we were able to order so much and share them between each other. We were full and very content with our meal. I'm a frequent flyer of Next Door. A big reason is because we have a wine locker, so there isn't any corkage fee for us. The ambiance is upscale and It's a nice place to bring guests, especially out-of-towners They have renovated and changed their menu. Unfortunately, I like their old menu better. I used to always get the Bento box, which is no longer an option. There new food items are still good, but like others have mentioned a little on the pricier side. I am still a fan because the service at Next Door is top notch, even though you pay a premium for it. They also host wine pairing dinners (Merry Edwards, Moet, Roederer, Chateau Margaux, Chateau Lafite) that I enjoy attending. So yeah, maybe for the special occasion. The no corkage fee for having a wine locker is the biggest draw for me. read more

Next Door by Wegmans offers a valet service. I don't think it's necessary since it's the only restaurant there but sure. The doors open to 2 walls of Granny Smith apples, different. It is dimly lit and you can see into the wine storage areas. I made a reservation and our table was ready when we arrived. The waiter informed us they had recently remodeled and now the menu is meant for sharing. The first item we ordered was the tuna tartare, it was very refreshing and light. The crispy rice served as a voyager for the tuna tartare. I remembered from last time that the nigiri had wasabi underneath so I ordered it without it. Next up we ordered the nigiri; shrimp, scallop, salmon, and yellowtail. The shrimp was cooked, I was expecting sweet raw shrimp. I wouldn't paid have for cooked shrimp over rice if I knew that. The scallop was nice and sweet. The salmon, salmon roe, and yellowtail was okay. It's very expensive, 3 pieces for $18-$24! We ordered the Chilean sea bass with tomato curry broth to share, $46. It was good, pan seared served with salad. Our dining experience was okay, I've been here a few times but it is very overpriced. For being that expensive, I expect the best quality seafood. read more

Glad I got to try this place before I moved since we had been meaning to come for years and years. I would say we had a very good experience as we were able to reserve/somehow got counter seating in the back where all the magic (cooking) was happening. It was really entertaining to see all of the food being smoked, chopped, cooked, etc and felt kind of like an omakase experience. Prices are definitely hefty hear but it did feel like an upscale experience. We really went for anything we wanted and ended up getting some delicioius nigiri (including lean tuna, a scallop and seared scallop truffle and a salmon), eggplant lollipops, grillled fish, a steak and a chocolate dessert and a few rolls. The total was over $315 for the 4 of us but it felt well worth it. Everything was very nicely cooked and tasted great and it was a tasty dining experience. When you hear Wegman's and think of the grocery store, this is completely different. Worth coming here for a special celebration/treat. read more

Over priced and not worth what you pay/the trouble/hype. We used to love this place. We don't like the recent changes to the menu, pricing, and decor. This isn't a "Next Door" or Grill menu. It's Asian fusion and I know better Japanese restaurants in the area. Now you pay for sides separately and prices have gone up. 15 bucks for half a sweet potato that wasn't good at all. $15 for a tiny lava cake with a thimble of icecream. Portioning on the miso soup is half what it used to be. The steak was good but price went up. Truffle fries and service are the only reasons to go back. The bill was $250 for me and my wife by the end. If you want cocktails and good truffle fries sure... beyond that if you want fine dining and ambiance I feel you should look somewhere else. read more

The steak skewers were pricey but insane. Buttery rich meat that melted when chewing. The servers make this place truly special. I picked the chicken dish as it was starting to get a bit pricey but it was delicious crunchy and paired amazingly with the complex sauces that somehow had 4-5 flavors one appearing after the other in sequence like it was arranged that way. Sauce alchemy. The desserts were to die for as well. The shareable cheesecake was so good even me a lactose intolerant took the plunge and suffered the aftermath. We were in town for my niece's graduation and were looking for a nice place to celebrate. The food, service and experience were all top notch . We had the beef tenderloin, ribeye, salmon, zucchini, sweet potato, truffle fries, cheesecake and chocolate tart. Filled with soft, dim lighting and cozy booths, the interior is romantic and intimate. We each ordered a bento box - one with miso salmon, and another with the slow cooked short rib. Each box came with a small side of salad, six pieces of sashimi, pickled veggies, and half a red dragon roll. The salmon and short ribs each sat on a bed of cooked white rice and sesame seeds. The salmon was incredible. Extremely tender, juicy, and cooked to the point where it melted in my mouth. The short ribs were also very flavorful, but the portion was smaller than the salmon. The sashimi was cut beautifully and tasted very fresh. The red dragon roll was delicious as well. The pickled veggies came with mushroom and eggplant and were smothered with a delicious garlic sauce. The bronzini Mediterranean fish, similar to Sea Bass in flavor was one of the market specials on a Tuesday night. It was the whole fish which you could either have served as such or filleted. I opted for the fillet and I was very pleased. It had a crisp sear on both skins and the meat was flaky and flavorful. It was served atop roasted Brussels sprouts and potatoes, mushrooms, and drizzled with a red beet bearnaise, all for $27. The cocoa nib brownie dessert was deliciously rich. It came with a small scoop of butterscotch ice cream. I wasn't a fan of the crunchy topping which had somewhat of an 'off' texture. Not sure how to describe it but it was slightly offputting. There were drops of raspberry compote on the plate as well. A lot of different flavors for sure but I really wanted more butterscotch flavor and caramel would have been nice, too. I made just a quick stop into Next Door for happy hour, but this gorgeous spot made quite an impression! I met my boyfriend after work and we ordered some cocktails and two sushi rolls, with the total coming to ~$25! An awesome happy hour deal (only available in the bar) in a beautiful setting. Can't beat it! My moscow mule was beyond tasty, and the sushi rolls we sampled were great. We opted for the spicy tuna, which is not overly spicy and did not skimp on the raw fish, and the crazy roll sub avocado for cream cheese. The crazy roll would obviously be better as intended, but the cream cheese (and the option to substitute) was much appreciated. I had no idea this space was so moody! Brides on a Bachelorette party venue hunt: I would HIGHLY recommend doing the classy/early portion of your evening in one of the bar "cabanas." I can't say enough good things about our Igloo dining experience last weekend! What a great idea, especially during these trying COVID times! Next Door has 3 igloos, and they only do 2 seatings a night. FYI - they're booked out through March already! (we were lucky to get in so early!) The Igloos are very sturdy and wonderfully decorated. Each igloo is constructed on a platform (not directly on concrete) and has 2 heaters inside so it's toasty warm! Our waiter, John, was amazing! He was funny, courteous and attentive. About out meal: - They are not doing bread service now during the pandemic. So I ordered the vegetable salad and it was soooo good! It was a very generous portion and Kevin and I split it. - Drink menu is good! They have speciality cocktails, wine, beer and liquor. We thoughly enjoyed our beverages. - Our dinners were simply amazing.... I had the Next Door Bolognese. Pasta was well cooked. Portion was great (took it home for dinner the next night) Kevin had the ribeye steak. It was cooked perfectly and you could cut it with a butter knife. It melts in your mouth. The only issue I had with that was the price. $45.00 for a ribeye is a bit overpriced, as you get a little bit of mashed potatoes and some brussel sprouts with it. But it was totally worth it. - They had an option of 2 desserts so we took one of each to go (I was too stuffed from dinner!). Service was above standards which is hard to find these days. The cashier Wegmans look for the servers needs to go as I felt like I was eating in a grocery store. Amazing!! I was visiting from NYC and blown away by this restaurant!! The decor, the food, the overall experience was incredible!! Perfect for a romantic date night or elegant dinner! Complimentary valet service parked our car and the hostess checked our coats. On a Saturday night we were able to get a 7:45pm reservation. I was immediately in awe of the decor! They have wine lockers (in a locked room) for rent where people can store their wine. The bar area was pretty big with a few TVs. Private sitting lounges that looked comfy were off the side of the bar. We entered the main dining area which was huge; over 50 tables with a eat in counter as well (see pics below). Our server was good giving us recommendations. We ordered lots of sushi, the duck dish, and crab and avocado salad. Everyone was fantastic. The sushi was some of the best I've had. Most rolls range from $10-$17 in price. Entrees run between $20-$35. I thought the portion sizes were fair considering the presentation and quality of the food that was being served! After dinner, I walked around to see the other areas for the restaurant. They offer a test kitchen area for cooking classes and cooking demonstrations. They also have private dining rooms that can be closed off from the main dining area; perfect for business lunch/dinner meetings! Bathrooms were elegant and impeccably clean! Came with a group of friends and found the service to be very on and off. We felt rushed to put in an order but then waited forever for food to come. One member of our party had to leave early and I had to leave before her food had even arrived. Once we started eating then we felt very rushed again with service staff clearing plates while we were still eating. Then when we got the bill we had to lay down our leader to get him to come and take it and cash us out. We all have sushi which was good but since this is a Wegmans owned restaurant it's hard to pay a lot more for the same thing you can get freshly made at the store. read more
