Castro's is a gem in Polk City. The atmosphere and the people are very warm and welcoming. They offer a variety of fresh pastries and breakfast burritos. They have an extensive drink menu, but my go-to is the coquito latte. It's a delicious mixture of evaporated milk, cinnamon, and espresso. The ambience invites you to sit and enjoy your coffee, even grab a book from their library and read for a while. The service is quick. Today I was given a sample of a future breakfast item, the oatmeal. It was creamy and had a great touch of cinnamon. We stopped in here for a quick cup of coffee, for the road, and we're glad we did. Not only was the coffee fresh and good (albeit very hot), we got tempted to purchase a bacon/egg/cheese breakfast burrito, which was delicious! The breakfast burrito was probably one the best I've had, and I've had plenty over the years. They had some outrageously awesome looking pastries available, which we plan to try the next time we're in (which will happen). The shop is very cute, if I'm allowed to use that term. Cute spot to go for a quick pick me up. I wish they were open every weekend or later in the evenings, as my schedule doesn't always allow me to grab a tasty treat. But when I have been everything was freshly made and the prices are great. It's family run and you can tell by the care and love they put into their food. Castro's Cafe is a must try for all in Polk County. Upon entering you are greeted like family. You can see they take great pride in the cleanliness of their cafe. Castro's makes a solid Tampa Cuban. I like their version with pulled pork instead of roasted pork and sliced. They had a wonderful seasoning on the pork that was subtle and appreciated. There was a line of 5 when we came in but the line went fast and the sandwich only took 5 mins. I didn't even dent my Coke before they called me. I figured the wait was at least 15 mins. You can see the guy at the press leaning on it to speed up the Cubans. They had a full crew of staff cooking and making all sorts of fancy coffees, etc. I don't think you could add much more staff in that size space. It was clean and new so can't tell much from that. The staff was friendly. Polk City is kind of a food desert unless you like bad pizza so Castros is greatly appreciated. I'm going back for sure. The Tampa Cuban was $8.50 and filled with meat. I thought the price considering Bidenomics was fair. My wife was interested in the coffee so we already have a return trip planned They are new to the community and we hope you try them because we know good food and people trying hard. My colleagues have been raving about this place so I had to give it a try- and now I'm sorry I didn't try it sooner! We ordered the Castro's Special sandwich (a tripleta) and they had a special for pulled pork with rice and beans. The pork was seasoned perfectly and the sandwich was absolutely scrumptious! Service was really quick a fb I love the overall atmosphere (Bigfoot on the wall is especially fun). This place is a little gem. We ordered muffins, a Cafè con leche, and an iced latte. I've also seen pictures of their cubans on Facebook, so I knew we had to try those. The cubans lived up to other reviews and their pictures. They were so delicious! And the coffees were amazing too. The people behind the counter were also so friendly and helpful. Came for their Grand Opening. I ordered The Cuban. As a Cuban I have to say it was delicious. The bread was toasted perfectly and the meats were full of flavor. The layout of the location was nice with multiple seating options. They got my specifications to my order correct. And on a super busy day for them (the line was to the door) they nailed it. Great place! I've been here twice now- once with my 19yo daughter and once with my husband. My daughter got a cookie iced latte which was so good I ordered it the next time I was there. Husband got the lemonade and really enjoyed it with a small yummy cupcake. I also tried the coffee and a small ham/egg/cheese breakfast sandwich which was plenty big for me and delightful to eat. Clean, well lit, extremely fast and friendly staff. There were a few people ahead of me but I didn't wait more than 5 minutes at either visit. They are only open 2 Saturdays a month and closed on Sunday- hoping as time goes by they will be able to expand their hours and still maintain their level of excellence. The shop is a few blocks from the local bike trail which we ride on weekends. It's in a small strip mall- I might have missed the sign the first time (would respectfully suggest new or bigger sign in the future - I drove past the shop twice before I found it, lol.
