Dr. Nanelle Barash and her staff have been nothing but supportive, responsive and compassionate since my dog, Lilly, was diagnosed with the awful disease IMHA in June 2024. Advanced Veterinary Specialists is the closest vet to us with a canine internal medicine specialist, an hour and a half drive away. When Lilly was still in crisis after having 3 transfusions in a little more than a week, Dr. Barash was kind and accommodating when she was released from an emergency vet in Santa Barbara following her third transfusion and referred to AVS on short notice. We found Dr. Barash to be straight-forward as she carefully explained the disease, what they know about it, as well as what is still a mystery. Lilly had already been through quite a few tests and scans. Dr. Barash said there were several tests she could do but didn't think they were necessary nor did she want to put Lilly through anymore than she'd already been through unless we wanted peace of mind that her anemia wasn't the result of cancer. We were grateful for her honesty as well as sparing our pocketbooks, but did elect to have another ultrasound of Lilly's spleen. Because IMHA is a marathon and not a sprint, I have complete confidence in the excellent care Lilly will continue to receive from AVS and Dr. Barash, as well as their commitment to communication and treatment coordination with Lilly's primary vet in Pismo Beach.

It's the most heartbreaking moment for a pet-owner, having to say goodbye to a furchild who has brought so much joy, meaning, laughter and love to one's life. In those difficult moments of grief, it is a blessing to be surrounded by gentle, empathetic and expert veterinarians like Dr. Mohsenian and staff lending support. Such was my experience this past week as I was parted from my dearest friend. Rest in Paws sweet Murray.

    Cost of treatment

We came on a Monday morning because our dog has been shaking and weak in the legs for 2 days. Without an appointment we checked in and waited about 15 minutes before they took her back. The front staff was extremely welcoming and caring. Dr. Samar Mohsenian examined her (an emergency exam cost $150) and brought us into a room to consult with us on a treatment plan. She was fantastic at explaining what she found from the exam and the path forward. She explained the genetics of our dogs breed and the common problems that may lead to what she was experiencing. Samar was extremely knowledgeable and made us confident that our dog was in capable hands. We waited an hour for the X-rays to be completed and sent to the professional radiologist. The determined a treatment plan and took our dog home. All in all the time it took from walking in to walking out was 3 hours. And actually the price wasn't as horribly high as I thought it might come out to be.

AVS saved my rescue pup, Chester's life
    Richie D.

Over a year ago I adopted a rescue senior chihuahua named Chester. With the passing of each day, Chester has become more and more comfortable, at ease and at home. That was until he randomly spiked a fever of an unknown origin... I felt absolutely helpless seeing my little one moan and shiver more than when I found him helpless and nervous in the shelter. As a new pet owner, I knew he needed the best care as soon as possible yet I was uncertain of where to take him. Also it just so happened to be a weekend night requiring an emergency vet clinic open 24/7 during a pandemic! Thanks to Yelp, I came across Advanced Veterinary Specialists (AVS) and they saw him immediately while I waited anxiously in the car. The vet, Dr. Obledo, promptly came outside after stabilizing him with hydration, putting him on medications, and provided me options and the costs. In the end, I was ever so thankful for AVS since Chester has since returned to his happy self. I not only improved his life, but he has changed mine in return.

I adopted DollyParton but she saved Mee. This is DollyParton Selbor Sanchez
    Yaya S.

My DollyParton passed away April 17th after 4 months of struggling to gain back what she lost after being poisoned (drugged) by a jealous psychotic woman. She began having seizures and finally a heart attack. On the evening of the 17th my husband took her from Mee for safe keeping so that we may grieve. We agreed (his idea) that the next day we would drop DollyParton off at this office, unfortunately for Mee, that did not happen. My husband Eric Carlos Sanchez whom is a great manipulator and so charming when it comes to women, convinced one of the staff to exclude Mee from the process and updates only after I had already been in communication with this office. My husband hid her from Mee and on top of that I got no help from AVS. He was to drop her off and I pick her up when all is done. I explained and would have happily gone to show them Dollys paperwork that shows and proves DollyParton is 100% mine. I allowed Dolly to keep collar w/tag on till cremated. This office instead of calling my number on her tag and questioning why all of a sudden I'm not allowed any info, this office decided to keep hanging up on Mee each time I called. I wound up in hospital because of the mental anguish and torment this office caused Mee. I explain to them that my Folly is there to be cremated and the staff showed no compassion and definitely weren't willing to listen. To this day I have not been able to get possession of my Dolly because they allowed him to pick her up.

I looked for a place similar to his daycare where we are from and decided to give Dioji a try. Check-in and wellness check was great; he seemed to enjoy the staff and I did too. At pick-up on his trial day, it was explained to me there was an "accident" and another dog was let into the daycare area with canine HPV (dog warts) and were not examined properly so my dog "might have been exposed." Turns out he definitely was exposed and then got the very contagious wart on his mouth which ruined Christmas and New Years plans because when you have it, you shouldn't be around other dogs. Of course Dioji couldn't possibly be expected to help with the situation. He has a couple more visits in late winter after the wart fell off and he was no longer contagious himself. The visits were fine, though he didn't get photo report cards like they promise. Fast forward to two weeks ago, another "accident." I dropped him off in the afternoon for a half day. He was there for less than an hour and I got a phone call that he threw up but they did not know why. They believed that he may have just been too hot so they separated him. I told them to call me back if he did not bounce back and I would come pick him up. They did not call back so I assumed he was fine. When I picked him up at the end of the day, the person at the desk went back to get him and gave no indication that there was a problem. Then another different staff person came to greet me and tell me that my dog was "maybe" stung by a bee, and "had a little allergic reaction" but they looked for the stinger and couldn't find it. How do you find a bee stinger in a brown dogs fur?! My dog comes around the corner and looked like Thing from Fantastic Four, clearly shaken up. They also gave him Benadryl but didn't know how much. One person said the reaction had just happened, one said maybe it happened a while ago when he threw up. He was clearly having an anaphylaxis reaction, and I was not called or told until I came to pick him up. I called the vet immediately to get their advice, and they told me to call the daycare back to find out how much Benadryl he was given so I could monitor his care. Magically the staff now knew how much and then I got another (third) story about what or how it happened. Let me be clear: I do not blame them for a bee getting into the park. This review is purely based on the care or lack there of in a serious situation and that the stories kept changing. On top of that, I was charged for a full day that day instead of a half day (timestamp in 1:18 pm and timestamp out 5:17 = 3:59) based on my account receipt. Four hours or less is a half day. There are never "adults" there to talk to about what happens if there is an issue; it is all college age kids working part time jobs. In both of my situations, no one would take ownership over what happened and they have no idea what to say when confronted in person or on the phone. I'm not going back to Dioji, I'll try other options. FWIW, the 2 stars are because there has been staff person who has been great to talk to (Jake maybe?) and because of their flexible hours, multiple locations and toy/food options available.

(obviously racist) Today I stepped in with my mom looking for some supplies for my fishes.. We were wandering by the fishes area looking to find what we needed, we saw a white girl worker there but she didn't even hesitate to ask if we need something. I was talking in Spanish to my mom because she doesn't speak English, and I mean, that's wouldn't be an impediment to have helped us if I already asked her some questions before. At the moment we were on line to pay, she was attending a white guy, but at that time we paid, other person attended us. The second time we came back to get 3 fishes she was the one who attend us to get them. Once I had chosen my fishes she only took the bag with the fishes and headed straight to the counter without saying any word like "do you need anything else?, or can you follow me to the counter." My mom and I were confused, when we headed the counter she was the one who attended us at the counter this time. And the thing is... you know what was the difference between the white guy who she attended first and us? She was completely indifferent to us, she did not even said a single word to us except for asking me my phone number and that's it. Instead, she was using her phone and giving us her back, and nothing like "it will be with cash or card?" Unlike, with the white guy she had greeted to and was so nice to him. When we left I didn't say anything but mom noticed it and told me that I shouldn't come back to buy at this store again. This country is already messed up to Latin people lives with the government that their citizens chose, (not everyone) and you go out and make others feel worthless. Yikes petco, I know you care about the pets welfare, but remember that your customers are the ones who look for them. Watch out for the workers you hire.
