We had dinner here over a month ago. The staff were great and we got to meet the owner. It is an expensive place to eat, but the food is just exquisite. EVERYTHING HERE IS AMAZING. I don't say that lightly. My husband and I made a pit stop for lunch here on our way to a wedding. We started with the buffalo wings which were huge and juicy and had just the right amount of sauce. The garlic ranch that was served on the side was mouth drool worthy. We ordered the Italian pizza. Roasted tomatoes, salami, and two different kinds of cheese finished off with a pesto drizzle on top. The crust. THE CRUST. I don't know what they put in it, but it might be the best pizza crust I've ever had. Buttery, garlicky a little salty... yum. I was not fortunate to hear about this place or try this place prior to COVID. Due to COVID making us get some cabin fever we have been branching out to visit new places. Boy am I stoked we tried here. The service was nice. The location is cute and the food is AMAZING. Yeah they are burgers made out of beef, turkey, chicken or fish. But they process a whole cow to make their burgers! Who does that?! And the buns are OUT OF THIS WORLD. Worth a drive to sit outside and enjoy nature. The one positive COVID has taught me. I was finishing up a very long trip back and was on the way back to Kansas City. I didn't want to suffer through some more fast food tripe off I-70 so I rassled up Yelp while was stopped for gas and discovered Catalpa. I worried that they might be closed and when I called the chef - I think Liz is her name - told me that they were indeed closing but that if I could be there in the next 30 minutes she could rassle up some food for me. I hung up and raced over! I had a delightful three course meal. She made a salad for me, then fried up a delicious fish and despite my being absolutely stuffed treated me to a dessert and coffee. I should very much like to bring my friends to Catalpa the next time I'm in the area, and sit at the Chef's Table where I had a chance to enjoy my meal for one. The restaurant is small, charming, and as authentic as they come. I read a bit about Arrow Rock and sometime when I'm not on a long road trip home I venture to say it might be worth checking out too. I was in Columbia, MO visiting family and we went to Arrow Rock to see a play at the Lyceum Theatre. My mom made reservations at Catalpa a few months earlier to get the chef's table and we all had a wonderful time. The food was all absolutely top notch and perfectly prepared and presented. The timing of the courses was flawless and the staff was friendly, helpful, and accommodating. There were four of us and we shared 2 appetizers, the spanakopita and the pork shank. Each of us had the salad, an entree, dessert, and a dinner roll. The sangrias and featured cocktail were also delicious. I had the roasted duck and the others had the lamb rack, tortellini with shrimp, and salmon. We shared two desserts, the lemon pound cake and the affogato. Everything was really great and I'm confident anything off the menu would be the same. Also, we had plenty of leftovers for a salmon and shrimp omelette the next day and I'm sure my mom will put the lamb to some good use. I loved my duck so there was none to take home! Our daughter had lived in Europe for many years, every time she is home, we eat Catalpa. She has stated that she has never had a meal as wonderful as at this charming restaurant. Arrow Rock is the historic village setting for this tiny gem. If you are somewhere between KC and St Louis, make the effort to get here and get in for dinner. Michelin defines a four star experience as one worth a journey, a three star as one worth a significant detour. It's one of these for sure. You decide after eating at Catalpa. If you don't sit at the copper covered chef's table, well, you don't deserve the experience. Liz is outgoing, and likes to converse about her food while cooking. She is generous with her attention and techniques. And if you bring kids here who only eat chicken fingers, please sit them still in a chair, and make them silently watch adults consume artfully, lovingly created food. Or, get them a sitter and a damn pizza. They will be happier, and so will you. For all that is holy, don't suffer unappreciative, overindulgent parents to permit their narrow minded offspring to occupy one of the precious seats. Sorry, I just had to let that out. Now that the unworthy rug rats are taken care of, order the duck. It is PERFECT. Like confit, but with crispy skin. The port cherry sauce is a beautiful partner. Oh my, it is good. I once had duck in Paris that was this good, but never again, including Les Halles in NYC, which was dreadful compared to Catalpa. Maybe Anthony Bourdain could stop in to be reminded of how it should be done. The sweet potato brule is so unctuous that it is a bit much with the duck, but alongside one of the beautiful steaks- ideal. And how does anyone make sautéed spinach worthy of such overwhelming dishes? Liz does with perfect amounts of garlic and much lemon. Very nice. The simple spinach salad was a bit heavily dressed, which is easy to overlook because the vinaigrette is perfectly balanced. The almond brittle and goat cheese further enhance the salad to a nice balance seldom achieved. I must say though, that spinach was being utilized a bit too freely. Spanakopita on a bed of spinach is redundant, and a spinach garnish after a spinach salad left even me concerned about oxalic acid overdose. House made everything is, to me, the minimum acceptable. But seriously, that many house made ice creams? I nearly cried. Get at least a taste of the lemon sorbet. It is what a lemon should taste like. I forgot to ask how long Catalpa has been here. I hope the economics are working out. Liz and her all lady all star team deserve long term success. And I mean that in the literal sense. They deserve it because they are earning it. If anyone understands that concept. In summary, open your wallet with joy, experience Catalpa and consider yourself lucky you did. read more

Dining here was a fun experience and we were made to feel fairly welcomed. We were a little taken back when the chef/owner Liz stopped at one table to chat with the patrons but not us. The room wasn't that busy either but it was a Sunday evening. Our salmon was melt in your mouth good as was the shrimp appetizer. Under the salmon was supposed to be a veggie chutney but we all three agreed the veggies were way over cooked and turned to mush. The salad was really good. The protein is the star of the meal and I think they need to work on their sides a little bit. The pricing is simple, you pay $45 or $55 for a meal which includes salad and bread. The menu is limited but the choices are excellent. They make homemade ice cream and frozen custard. We got the cappuccino ice cream and it had ice chunks in it but had a good flavor. Coffee is outstanding. I would give it a 5 star rating except for the items noted above. We'll be back maybe next time we take in the play at the local theatre. read more

Watch your check for over charges. You will be rushed, even with reservations so if you aren't done eating hold on to your plate. Don't expect a sear on your meat as they don't use a normal grill, chicken kabob was limp, mushy, and pale, steak was pink on the outside, not your normal brown and the spinach was burnt. I was totally blown away by Catalpa. For being in such a small town in the middle of nowhere, this was the kind of quality and presentation you would expect in a big city restaurant. I'm from Springfield, MO, which is a huge restaurant town, and Catalpa was better than most fine restaurants in Springfield. I had the filet mignon topped with brandy-glazed mushrooms and bruleed sweet potatoes and glazed carrots on the side. It was unbelievably good. My wife had the red snapper with risotto on the side, and she let me try it. It was also incredible. I felt like I was at a five-star New York restaurant. Also, the wine selection is great. To top it off, Liz Huff (owner and chef) was really personable. She came out to the dining room and talked to the tables. She seems like a really nice person. read more

Had dinner here last night. The food was plated well and tasty. In fact, I tried to get the recipe of the salad dressing. Not surprisingly, the creator of said salad dressing mentioned she would take the recipe to her grave! I don't blame her! Unfortunately, the Santa Barbara Pinot Noir we asked for ($40+/ bottle) had "turned." When red wine is supposed to be stored in the 48-56 degree range, I don't know how they can keep their wine and hope it will be good. The outside temperature was 96 degrees; the dining room temperature, with A/C blowing, was 89 degrees. With that much heat, wine won't last more than a day or so. I gave the young 13 yr old boy, who was helping, a $10 tip for himself. He never said a thank you or anything. They need to invest in a wine locker that has temperature control. read more

Food is amazing, and it's a quaint, small (very small) restaurant. Shrimp appetizer was so good, we wouldn't let them take the sauce away; salad was great with fresh fruit and candied pecans. Entrees and rolls were on point too. The night went sour with the service. Restaurant was busy (people trying to go to a play at the Lyceum) and the servers started by being attentive. After the play crowd left and it was only my table and one other they seemed like they forgot we were there. We waited, finished with our food about 30 minutes while the servers attended to cleaning the recently left tables and two new ones that had arrived. When they finally gave us boxes, we asked for a dessert menu. After setting a timeline for ourselves of 10 minutes (if the server didn't come back we'd give up on dessert), she still hadn't come back, so we asked for the check. While the food was good, when paying $55 for a steak I expect more attentive service, especially given this restaurant is in the middle of nowhere and customers are clearly tourists. The vibe made it feel like they were not focused on the cuatomer, but solely on turning over tables. As a side note, air conditioning was not working which got uncomfortable, especially while waiting so long between service. While I'm glad I tried this place, I don't think I'll be returning anytime soon unless waitstaff improves. read more
