One of my primary concerns was that my $14,000 retainer check was deposited before I ever signed an engagement agreement or fee agreement. That immediately raised concerns for me. After ending the representation, I was charged over $1,000 for what I believe amounted to approximately one meeting and photocopying of my documents. I disputed the charges, requested that the invoice be revised, and attempted to resolve the matter directly. I was unable to reach a resolution, so I filed a complaint and fee dispute with the Oregon State Bar. My understanding is that the firm chose not to participate in the fee dispute process. I also became uncomfortable with the repeated discussions about the firm's use of AI in legal work and ultimately decided this firm was not the right fit for me. I cannot recommend this firm based on my experience. I encourage anyone considering hiring Rugged Law to carefully review the fee agreement before paying a retainer, ask detailed questions about billing practices, and make sure they are completely comfortable with the representation before proceeding.

Emails and phone calls would go unanswered for days, sometimes for weeks. When we finally did get ahold of them, they would not remember the details of our case. They repeatedly had to ask us to explain exactly what the issues were again. (And of course billing us each time for the explanation.) We would send advance documents for them to look over that went unread before the meeting. We would be told one thing at one meeting, and then the exact opposite the next time we talked. Finally we'd had enough and fired them. We asked for what was left of our retainer back. They said it would be in the mail that week. It took three weeks and two reminders for it to come. They also wrote the check incorrectly. These lawyers can't even write a check correctly. I asked around. Apparently this is a familiar story. It's hard to get their attention unless your case is "interesting." Avoid, avoid, avoid.
