We drove an hour from Mt. Hood to visit the winery. We were only in town for a few days. We came with our two small children and were turned away because of our "minors". Mind you, this was the day before thanksgiving, the winery was completely empty, and they have a huge field with tables. We weren't allowed to have a tasting, buy a bottle and sit outside, or even stay on the property. This was so hugely disappointed. At least we got a recommendation to go to a better, more welcoming winery (Phelps Creek). Having worked in the industry, I've never had my children turned away especially in an accommodating type of location. read more

I am remiss to have taken months to do my review. My friend Erin has a membership with Cathedral Ridge and she booked four of us in for a barrel tasting. I'd never had Cathedral Ridge Wine before except a sip at Erin's house from a bottle she had open. We booked a weekend trip to Hood River basically just for this barrel tasting. I cannot emphasize enough how GOOD this was. Anna was our host for our barrel tasting and she was absolutely wonderful. I've had a lot of good food and wine that I've reviewed but I honestly would give this 10 stars if I could. We had SUCH an incredible experience. We learned about the wines, vintages, AVA where they were grown, history on Cathedral Ridge itself and of course we drank! The photos really don't do it justice. The barrel tasting room is cozy and welcoming. It felt luxurious in a way like Joanna Gaines had come in and styled it. We had one GF (with a severe allergy,) and one vegan so we were allowed to bring in a couple of snacks. They were so accommodating. I felt like I could have spent all day there drinking CR wine and relaxing. It was for all four of us the epitome of a perfect girls weekend. The winery is very nice, clean, I LOVED the bathroom, and the wine. Oh the wine. We all bought 3-6 bottles. It is fabulous wine. Great bold reds don't do it justice but they are bold reds with BIG flavor. I selfishly want to make this an annual girls trip because everything about it was perfect. And no wine lived up to this once we had this experience. I cannot recommend Cathedral Ridge more. And Anna was pinnacle to us having a truly wonderful experience. Got here on a busy Sunday early afternoon but there were still plenty of tables available on the patio as well as on the picnic area tables. However, we could not order a tasting flight since we did not have reservations, but we could sit and have a glass of wine if we wanted. A friend and I were visiting the area and saw great reviews for Cathedral Ridge! We made a reservation for a tasting to make sure we would get a spot, but luckily, going in the middle of the week in the morning meant we had the entire winery to ourselves The lovely woman who took care of us let us choose anywhere we wanted to sit, so we sat right by the windows looking over the vines towards the river. It was a magical spot because partway through our tasting a rainbow spread across the entire sky and stayed there! It was breathtaking! The wines themselves were very tasty. I'm a white wine drinker myself, but I could definitely appreciate how tasty the reds are here too. The tasting allows you to choose from a wide variety of options so my friend and I each chose different wines to try. The tasting is generous and a great experience. Highly recommend! They had me at Big, Bold Reds! In a state known for Pinots, it was refreshing to find a winery that had such a great selection of bigger reds across many price points. And the view of Mt. Adams from their vineyard is spectacular! Along with stellar service, Cathedral Ridge is a great place to start your day of wine tasting. I say start because they are one of the first wineries when you take the first Hood River exit coming from Portland. We loved the Necessity Red - and agree with the name! Perfect drinking wine for a charcuterie board and so many meals. We also really enjoyed the Cabernet and Syrah. The tasting room inside is small and a bit too dark for me. The gem is the side yard where in the summer, flowers cascade over trellis and overflow from pots, with views of the vineyard and Mt. Adams to the west. It's beautiful any time of year, but April through mid November is best. On your way out, make sure to look up and catch a gorgeous view of Mt. Hood. Around every corner there is such beauty in Hood River. read more

Decent spot! First time wine tasting in Hood River area, we did the reserve tasting which came with a tasty chocolate selection which honestly was my favorite part! We were able to choose our wines and our server generously poured us an extra when we weren't fans of a certain wine. We weren't the biggest fans of the wines themselves, and couldn't sit outside to enjoy the views due to the wind (the views were the main reason we wanted to come!) and at times the service was a bit slow. I have to start the review by thanking my kindest friends Martina C and Dave for sharing the barrel tasting experience with us .Martina had spoken so highly of the barrel tasting she did last year with friends ,that I had been looking forward to it since .It was so much fun that I did not even think of taking pics (which is sacrilege when you are a Yelper ) .The experience is very different from the usual wine tasting and you learn so much about the wines and grapes etc. The property is great and has a very rustic charm. The outdoor yard is gorgeous and with spring here , everything looked spectacular .The Barrel tasting though happens in the room indoors and it had a really unique vibe .Our sommelier was amazing and made the whole thing super fun . The tasting started with Sampling 4 wines thieved directly from barrels in the tank room where they are hand-crafted and bottled. It was followed by slightly more maturing wines and we also got to taste a yet unopened old wine that was for sure a crowd favorite . The wines were as good as it gets -I am a fan of the bold reds and that's what they specialize in. The pours were generous and tasted excellent. The Cab Sauv ,Zifandel and the Barbera were my favorites. I also got a bottle of Cab Sauv to go home with . Stopped here on a Saturday afternoon with no reservation and were able to sign up for a tasting no problem. We were greeted very warmly and felt welcome right away. It was not the best weather day, so no sitting outside, but the tasting room inside was charming and well appointed and we were happy to sit and enjoy the wine and the view of the trees blowing in the wind and rain outside our window. We signed up for our tasting and our lovely wine hostess talked details about the wine with us and never rushed us through or made us feel pressured to buy bottles or join the wine club. We received chocolates with the reserve tasting and also ordered the snack board, which was full of yummy little meats, cheese, pickled veggies and nuts that all went well with our wines. We each enjoyed a glass of wine after our tasting and bought six bottles to take home. We would go back again, and really liked the fact we visited on a whim, and did not have a reservation. Place is cute, they have wonderful red wines, the staff is very accommodating and simply wonderful in describing the wine and allowing us to sit back and relax in their property. LeANN treated us wonderfully and even gave us a tour of the facility. The killer was the last wine we tasted - a library Pinot Noir. A 150 year old for $10 retail the Very Best Tasting Pinot I've ever sipped in my life! Ooops. Sorry . It's a 10 year old $150 retail. Yeah messed up my gray cells, that one! Lively place. Lots of visitors this Labor Day weekend. The sommelier gals managing tastings very well as a team and all the wine we selected tasted great. Our very favorite was their Barbara reserve and our very least favorite (not because it was bad just bland) was the Bordeaux. They have many beautiful areas outside where you can picnic if you like. This gorgeous winery was our first stop on our winery tour with G-Limos. We walked through a lovely tasting room to arrive at a beautiful covered patio adorned with huge hanging baskets just bursting with colorful petunias. As if this place wasn't darling enough, there's a nest of baby birds up in the rafters chirping their little heads off. The Pinot Gris was my favorite, very crisp, fruity and refreshing. The second wine we tasted, the Halbtroken, a rosé was a tad too sweet for my taste. Some folks said they didn't find it sweet at all. But the name itself does mean "half dry" in German, so based on the name, some sweetness should be expected, right? I really enjoyed all of the reds that we sampled as well. Two of them were very peppery, interestingly peppery yet still so drinkable. Nice location, and they do have nice wine. I will absolutely drink there wine in the future, however this review is focused on the tasting room experience I'm giving 2 stars because the staff were not exactly welcoming to all the people who came in. I love wine tasting, and I love going to wineries, however I have little patients for when the employees overtly treat people differently... They were not that busy, so the staff did not have a reason to be rude or curt, but sadly that was the case for the people who were next to us and obviously not wine drinkers. They were essentially asking for help and overwhelmed, but not get much help or even respect in the situation. I feel I was treated average, however it just felt like the employee was trying to spend her time with the older couple who it felt like she was trying to make a bigger sale to. That's fine I guess if you want to run the business like a used car lot, but it's an unfortunate way to treat people, and the reason why I think some people don't like the wine culture. It should be inclusive, and you should be excited to share your wine with new people, not trying to push them out of the way to make a few more dollars. In my opinion, There are other wineries in the area with great wine who are more accommodating. read more

Cannot say enough amazing things about Cathedral Ridge. We made very last minute reservations and they accommodated us so generously. Their Chardonnay is a unique take on a typical white wine leaning more towards a citrus taste. Highly recommend. We come to Hood River at least once a year, for the sun and for the wine. Cathedral Ridge has been one of our two main favorites for the years (10+) that we've been coming here. Nicely made reds (we don't drink whites or roses). There is a large tasting list and you are not limited only to what is open that particular day. The staff pouring the tastings are friendly and fairly knowledgeable. They are pretty low key, as is the winery which is interesting to me as the wines are more sophisticated. Wineries these days are becoming "destinations". Do you get the wine or the experience (usually one or the other, not both)? Cathedral is nice in that it hasn't gone all posh. The grounds are exceptionally beautiful and the staff are extremely knowledgeable about the grapes as well as the wines Tell them what you like and they can pair you up with wines that match you. A nice little side trip on our day in Hood River. It was towards closing time the day we were there so it was a little on the quiet side which was great. Gravitating towards reds like do this was a good place to come. $15 for the standard tasting of six wines and we weren't disappointed in anything that we had. Big fan of the Cabernet Sauvignon. I like bold in your face reds. We were here during the summer and the person giving the tasting was a college kid (she had never heard of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc). She was quite nice though. Didn't really care for the wines. Tasting was expensive; 6 tastes for $15, and they waive only $5 if you buy 2 bottles. Price point was $26-$58, which I thought was high for the quality of the wines. They had lots of outdoor seating, but were not dog friendly. Found other wineries in the area with lower tasting fees, waived with a one bottle purchase, and nice quality wines with dog-friendly patios. read more
