We recently moved from San Jose to Sacramento and needed to find a new groomer for our 3 year old Pomeranian. We had an amazing groomer in San Jose that we took him to regularly every month. His last appointment there was in November, and after moving we brought him to this salon in January -- so there had only been a short gap between grooms. Appointment 11:30AM. The business is new, minimal, as to be expected but not what I'm used to. We were greeted by Jordan & Noah (?) if I recall. They were cordial and we debriefed our Pom had proudly just recovered from an uphill battle with alopecia that randomly sprung up last year, so we asked them to be extremely careful and not shave him down as we don't know if the hair will grow back.. They thoroughly explained he had matting but would work through it slowly and do what they could. Great. Not a new encounter for us, it happens. 11:40 AM.10 minutes after leaving they called us back, and upon arrival my heart sank to my stomach. My Pom was panting and shaking, his left side was bald, raw and irritated, it appeared to be severe brush burn and looked like his hair had been pulled out.. The groomer tried to explain they used the tools available and hair "just kept falling out" that I should put him on "keratin supplements" and "seek a vet regarding his alopecia". Staring brokenly at all his clumps of fur on the table I was stunned and speechless, I scooped up my baby and left out the door. Alopecia refers to hair loss falling out over time, not hair being forcibly pulled out to the point that the skin is left red and raw. Photos don't fully capture the level of inflammation and irritation he had immediately afterward.. 3 weeks later I drove 2 hours to San Jose to take him to his original groomer, told them the story, and showed them the photos. They said what they saw appeared consistent with severe brush burn and that the groomer may have mistaken it for undercoat shedding, resulting in pulling out his fur during the process. They were able to groom him without issue, and he came out looking phenomenal -- the complete opposite of what we were told about what could be done at Happi Feet. I wanted to give this business the benefit of the doubt, which is why I waited and sought input from other professionals regarding this experience. While I don't think the owners are malicious, it calls into question the experience, credibility, and education of the individuals handling our family members. Something you should question too, before bringing your breed here. I've documented his condition immediately after the appointment and again after his follow-up groom in San Jose three weeks later for context.

My long-haired German Shepherd's grooming had unfortunately fallen to the back burner due to a rollercoaster ride of life, but Heather gave him the full works including working carefully through some matted areas and carefully shaved an area that needed it. It was not a rushed service by any means and I appreciated the time and care she gave him. He left looking so handsome and his fur was SO soft and fluffy. While I sat and waited for my dogs full service, I got to see and observe Butch with 4 other dogs and he was so attentive and sweet with the dogs he groomed. I got the chance to see him interact and groom 4 small dogs and he made it look effortless, one of them was giving him kisses and he just snuggled them back. It was really sweet to see that. Suzie at the front was kind and welcoming and was easy to talk to. She answered all my questions and definitely made me feel comfortable. Suzie was hopping back and forth between handling front desk needs, patients coming/going, and helping out with the groomers as needed. I think what surprised me the most was how all the dogs (even those waiting in the kennels) were calm and the place wasn't chaotic. I've been to other grooming places and it's always been stressful and the dogs look and or act like they're super nervous, or it's constant loud barking. Aside from my big guy "talking" it was chill. It's clear that Heather, Butch, and Suzie not only love what they do, but are really good at it too. This showed in the quality of their work and the warmth of their service. I was told that this would not be a problem because they do not require puppies to have a rabies shot for grooming. When someone called later to confirm my appointment, I asked again to make sure. I clearly stated that this was my puppy's first grooming appointment and that he still had not received his rabies vaccine. Once again, I was assured that it was not an issue. However, when I arrived for the appointment, I was turned away because my puppy didn't have a rabies vaccination. This was incredibly frustrating because I had already made special arrangements at work, took my lunch break later than usual, and coordinated with my daughter to pick up the puppy after his appointment. If this is your policy, that's completely understandable--but I should have been told that from the beginning, especially after asking twice. Instead, I wasted my time, rearranged my day, and left feeling very disappointed. Better communication and consistency with customers would have prevented this entire situation.

Then, once the appointment is confirmed (typically the next day), I receive a call and/or a text. The grooming service I get is called their Luxury Bath and it's very reasonably priced. It includes a bath, dry, nail cut, and ear cleaning. You can easily view their full services and pricing online. Both times my dog was ready in about an hour and when I picked her up she was happy, smelled good, and looked great! I'm happy to say that Woof Gang is our regular groomer now.

When I first met with the groomer, she asked me about several preferences that I didn't know the answer to -- something along the lines of "Do you want a lion's mane? How about saving the fur boots?" Not sure what I responded but the groomer ended up shaving the entire body while keeping the head, tail, and legs unshaved without any transition. I'm still processing how my cat looks. This is partially on me for not knowing what I was getting myself into but regardless, I can't fathom any owner wanting their cat to look like a hybrid between a black Puss In Boots and the alien from ET. I'm trying to express my disappointment, but I can't help but laugh instead at how poorly this groom had been executed. +1 star because the groomer was very polite and accommodated me despite being 20 minutes late from an emergency. Turnaround time took about 2 hours and came out to $110 pre-tip. I don't think I'm coming back here... at least, not until I know explicitly what I want my cat to look like down to the tiniest detail.
