Kate the owner is an absolute doll, and the food is fantastic. When I ordered breakfast, I thought she had put a cup of ketchup on the plate for my potatoes. This is after I said I didn't want ketchup, I shrugged and just went with it. Turns out it's not ketchup. It's HOMEADE STRAWBERRY JELLY FOR THE BUSCUIT! Dude! Extremely kind service. I ordered the day's special and was wowed. Excellent burger with cheddar cheese, onion rings, and barbecue sauce. The bun was nice and toasty, and the food was out was very fast. The outside may not look like much, but the inside is nice and cozy. For a diner, they certainly don't seem overly eager to feed us. With all the five star reviews, I'm thinking this will be a place "where everyone knows your name and they're always glad you came"...you know the place. It's exactly like that, but our waitress seems to despise the fact that we ordered food and seemingly knows us by names you only utter under your breath. "We're really busy," must be the diner's slogan. We've heard her reiterate this mantra for each table. "Can I have extra cheese?" "You get what you get!" "I'll have the number 5." "No you won't. We're too busy to make pancakes. You can have the number 2." Our waitress is so ornery, it's actually kind of funny. It appears that she's not only annoyed by her customers, but hates her job too? Once the food came, you could tell it was fresh food and the cook, who may be the owner, puts out food she's proud of as she later came to check on the patrons. Jam was homemade, eggs are farm fresh, food is homey and seasoned... Kate, the cook gets 5 stars for food and personality, waitress gets a 1...that it a solid 3 in my book. read more

We stayed in a cute little house in Riggens, on our way home from Montana . We chose cattlemen's dining for breakfast. They didn't greet us...we looked around & sat ourselves. No menus, after sitting for a few, I got up and asked for them myself. The server (older lady) acted like she hated us the minute we walked in the door..it was weird. She was rude to my husband & I when we ordered. The food took forever even though it was just our family of 4 & one other party there. My plate had a long white hair in it. one employee (maybe the owner, not sure) was nice & complimented our family... but overall the experience was awful. We walked across the street to the coffee shop right after breakfast & ordered a white chocolate mocha. It was yummy & the kid was nice there. read more

If your table is near the kitchen don't be surprise if Kate pops her head out of the window to see how you're doing. Hubby had the mushroom burger, I had a cheeseburger. Sooo good! The tots were nice & crispy. Fortunately the couple we bumped into as they were leaving advised us to order the huckleberry cobbler "since they're almost out". Great place for breakfast or lunch at a small town place. Right off HWY 95 with parking in the back. Came during brunch so I had breakfast and husband and kids had lunch. French toast was really good and bacon was perfect. Coffee cup was kept full. My husband had a Philadelphia cheese wrap and fries. Kids had grilled cheese, burger and BLT. They said it was great. The food here is incredible. Garden fresh! We loved the space and really loved the food. We had the French dip and the grilled cheese. Followed by the triple chocolate cream pie with homemade ice cream. Wow! It's not often you get homemade ice cream. This is just okay for me. Passing through, needed a cheeseburger, they were open. Definitely locals joint, waitress talking asking about grandkids and fly fishing. Burger came and it was nothing really remarkable it wasn't quite a gourmet burger and it wasn't quite one of those side of the road ive bat burgers either. We enjoyed an excellent breakfast at Cattlemen's. The atmosphere is homey with a cozy feel and friendly waitresses. The toast was served with delicious homemade berry jam and our coffee cups were kept full. The basic breakfast of eggs, hash browns and toast hit the spot and it was nice to have the no meat option. Food was fantastic but service was interesting. My sister and I just got done camping (we love Riggins) so we thought it would be great to get a meal before our drive back home to North Idaho. So we stop in and were directed to a table for breakfast. Ok great! The lady throws items onto the table. Ok, maybe she is having a bad day. We'll just move past the rudeness because we had a great time camping. New customers arrive and every single one of them were greeted with a warm welcome but for some reason we were not. Items were practically tossed onto table including plates and drink cups. We were polite and had easy food orders. If I wanted treated like that, I should have stayed at work this week. Anyone who has reviewed this place as "unremarkable" doesn't seem to understand what they're dealing with. I've worked in the restaurant industry almost my whole life. I'm 40 now. I've never worked or eaten anywhere that has this level of care put into the food. Everything is homemade. Everything! The toast, English muffins, pastries, jam, ice cream.... I wouldn't be surprised if the ketchup was made from scratch (I didn't try it, but the fry sauce seemed to be). This is a real gem and the people of Riggins are lucky to have Kate here cooking for them. If you come early in the morning when she's working by herself you'll probably catch some customers pitching in to re-fill coffees. If that doesn't tell you how much they appreciate and love this place I don't know what to say because no one is helping out at your local Waffle House. I feel lucky we got to come here and experience such old fashioned hospitality. Kate and her husband are remarkable, generous, and wonderful people. I've traveled all over the US and met a handful of folks I know I'll never forget because they have that special something. These folks are those kind of people and the food can't be beat! Stopped off here on the way through town. It has a fun family cafe feel to it. There are probably 10 tables but most are just 2 or 4 seaters so probably would not work well for large groups. Options for breakfast until noon and sandwiches/burgers/salads for lunch. Tasty, home cooked style food. We came to town with a jet-lagged baby looking for breakfast at 5:30 am. Kate gave us a warm welcome, with plenty of fresh healthy treats for the little one. Her food is delicious, fresh, and local. Make sure you try the toast and jam, which she makes in-house. And it does feel like you're being welcomed into someone's house for a delicious high quality meal. Read the reviews and of the lower ratings I can only say this: If waiting 15-30 minutes for organic, fresh, tasty food is too long to wait, well, I think you confused this place with those other joints that are known as "fast food" establishments. Some reviews said food wasn't "fancy" enough? Not sure what that means, you can't get this kind of true home cooking with care product from any restaurant anymore - not even the "fancy" ones. Here late Feb. passing thru for lunch. Nice Cook/kitchen Mgr/Owner came out to confirm our breadless (gluten-free) order, we ordered the Reuben's on lettuce bed instead of the bread. She suggested Spinach instead which sounded great . The patrons at the table next to ours commented to us that they could smell our Rubens and they were going to order it the same way the next time they came in. The food is very much home-made & excellent as if I were at grandma's house. Both the cook/owner and waitress felt like aunts, older yet self-actualized and comfortable with whatever comes along. It appears locals eat here otherwise. Approx 8 tables for 4 or 6--some are put together from 2 smaller tables for 2. Still have kids' pics on the wall behind the register. We will definitely stop here again the next time we pass through! 4 stars not 5 only because it is not very fancy, is limited by location & resources I suspect. They know the regular customers there (could hear the cook/waitress conversations about the orders--all professional, mind you) and what those customers will want. read more

My husband and I stopped in at Kate's for a quick bite as we were passing through Riggins. Our server Lynne was very sweet, service was great and the food was delicious. We had a patty melt, very tasty and not greasy and a chicken wrap with homemade pesto and fresh spinach, tomato and avocado.
