This is an excellent trail for hiking, biking, skiing, and snowmobiling. It's obvious that the trail is well maintained as there are piles of freshly cut brush along the edges. I like to start at Rockwood Rd near Manitowoc and walk north from there.. the trail passes farms, fields, and woods. You will see all kinds of birds and other wildlife on a hike. This will become one of my favorite hikes.

The trail is mostly straight and has minimal elevation change (less than 50 feet over the entire 14.25 miles). While the views may not be stunning, they are quite bucolic. Rolling fields with grazing cows, lush farmland, wooden bridges over deep ravines contains bubbling brooks. There are small parking areas along the trail allowing for various start points. The main trail head is in Denmark and the other end is on Rockwood Road (near Big Apple (bar and grill). I recommend starting at Rockwood, packing a picnic, and taking a break at the Denmark trail head pavilion (which has restrooms).

We have the national park pass which we were able to use during our visit. We stopped by numerous overlooks and of course, the main one where you can see the two land mass/bear cubs lay and the mama bear watching over them. You can read about the lore and why this area is named sleeping bear dunes. It's a cute, albeit sad story of love and loyalty and never leaving behind those you love. Now on to the wondrous nature view you'll find here. Sand dunes, yes! But also a beautiful lake view unobstructed by modern buildings. Pure nature beauty. This really is a place to visit. Don't skip it if you're in the area! It is dog friendly. There was even a kind man up on top of the dunes overlooks giving treats to pups. Our pup enjoyed the treats and the attention and I enjoyed creating memories with her and my husband in the middle of nature. Go check it out!

Sleeping Bear Dunes is a must if you are nearby! There are beaches that are free to enter, but to…read morego into the actual park and see the big dunes, you have to pay $20 per car, or you can get in with a National Parks pass. Most of it is drivable once you're in, and you can park your car off to the side of the road and view multiple different overlooks. The dunes are huge I was surprised. They're much bigger than I am used to seeing at Indiana Dunes! We stopped at the Lake Michigan overlook. There's a parking lot with plenty of parking. To get up to the overlook, you'll have to walk up a smallish sand dune. It's easier if you take your shoes off. Once you get up, there's super steep dunes that many people attempt to go all the way down then climb up on all fours. It's extremely hard to get back up!! Walking through sand is not easy. There's even a sign that warns you of the dangers of doing so and the damage it does to the dunes. There was a firetruck and ambulance on sight ready to rescue anyone.

The staff is refreshingly positive and welcoming, making my visit a pleasure from the start. The atmosphere of the shop is relaxing, and I enjoyed a great cup of coffee as I perused the goods. I brought my "vintage" 1998 Gary Fisher mountain bike in for a tune-up and minor restore job. The team was able to quickly source hard-to-find parts and present me with a fine, like-new, finished product. They even put in some extra elbow grease and cleaned up some overspray on the frame. I have taken this bike into "high-end" shops in Denver only to be met with negativity or "buy a new bike from us" mentality. The Leelanau Trail was inches away from the shop which was incredibly convenient. The trail is a delightful mix of shade and sun, and very well maintained. The bike was in good shape and pretty fun to ride. My only complaints are the weight of the bike and no easily accessible water bottle holder. The heft of the bike made taking off a little bit of a challenge. So when trying to cross one of the many roads that bisect the trail it was a little stressful trying to get myself moving quickly. The bike did have a large saddle bag that held my water bottle and could have held a book, bathing suit, lunch, etc if I had been riding to the Suttons Bay beach (which is what I'll do next time!).

Nor Door Sports has consistently provided quality products combined with fast & friendly service. It is nice with an active family to know that my kids are on good bikes, that we have a place to go for bike info, and can stop by for repairs. There has been times when the bike(s) have had to spend a night or two, but a call or text to let me know the bike is ready, then I'm back on the road/trail. More often than not I'm in with a flat/minor repair & out before I've checked all my emails. Even during my triathlon days, when I bought a tri-bike, zipp tire & power tap, thru Facebook Marketplace, all I needed to do was bring in the bike for Lief to inspect in order to determine the correct conversion parts (rear cassette). A day or two later... Leif has ordered parts, re-assembled the components, and I have been on the road ever since (at least until I hung up the spandex for mountain biking shorts). It is not uncommon to see him helping out someone put on their car rack; as he did mine; that I purchased thru Nor Door; after helpful research by Lief. In short, good products + good service = great bike shop. Plus, Leif is a wealth of knowledge on road routes, off road trails & regional group rides. Btw - I bought a Stache 5 - 29er;with every ride, I am wondering why I didn't get one earlier! Plus I know that it is backed up by quality service thru Nor Door.
