While having a delicious "Miami Vice" at the lobby bar inside the Marriott Resort, the cool bartender told me to check out Cayo Caribe if I liked fresh fish. He said it was about a 10 minute walk and that I would not be disappointed.. Bet! The next day, while she was working, I took my little walk to Cayo Caribe and I'm sure glad that I did! It's a cool indoor/outdoor restaurant, with a nice sized bar and island decor. I ordered the Red Snapper and the server promptly came over with two for me to pick from before they cooked it to my liking. I chose grilled over fried. It took a little while for them to prepare it but it was well worth the wait. That snapper was freakin delicious!! So much so, I convinced her the next day to check out Cayo Caribe instead of Sushi. We came to Cayo Caribe in San Juan with our toddler and my husband's coworker for dinner. The restaurant had a nice casual vibe, and we were excited to try a mix of dishes. We started with several appetizers : queso frito, bacalaitos, and croquetas de bacalao. They were all enjoyable, especially the croquetas de bacalao which were crisp and flavorful. For the entrées, we ordered two red snappers -- one fillet and one whole fish. The whole fish was good and well-seasoned, but the fillet was disappointing. It lacked seasoning and was a bit dry. My family and a coworker picked this place after a long day of work. I was visiting PR for work and the local team recommended by i go here for dinner. We were able to sit down quickly after arrival and had time to view the menu. The appetizers were delicious and my wife and I shared the red snapper. This spot was recommended by our hotel and was just a 7-minute walk away, super easy to get to. When we arrived, we were told there'd be about a 25-minute wait. We were fine with that, and right as we were being seated, they let us know the food would take another 45 minutes. Came here with a group of five and maybe it was because we were in a group it was not the best experience. The place itself was loud, there were tables outside, but they didn't want to seat us out there, so we sat in doors. Did I mention it was loud? In any case it took a very long time for someone to take our orders and the much longer for the food to arrive. I ordered a veggie arepa and the crab empanada. It was at best ok. The crab was definitely the better of the two. They also refused to split the check into more than two parts or take separate credit cards. This seems typical for the area, though horrifically inconvenient if say, you're traveling with a work group. I also ordered a margarita and instead of salting the rim it tasted like they poured salt into the drink, even after I scraped all the salt off the rim. I would have said something if the waiter even came back to check on us, but he didn't. I don't know that I'll be back here. Between the food that was at best ok, the really mediocre drink and similar service there are better places around. read more

This was our first real meal in Puerto Rico. We visited San Juan our first day and this restaurant came recommended by Maria and her team at the visitor center. There were three of us so we ordered 1. Shrimp risotto - my coworker seemed to enjoy this. She offered for me to sample but it had cheese. 2. Paella - this was my meal. Honestly the rice was delicious and flavorful. However, the fish was dry, calamari was very rubbery and almost got stuck in my throat, and the musssel and clam shells were both empty. 3. Whole snapper - my sister picked out her own and it was delicious. The fish with seasoned well and was fresh. She also ordered fries and rice and beans with her meal, but only received the fries but honestly, the meal didn't anything beyond the fish. 4. We all ordered nonalcoholic piña colada drinks and enjoyed each of them. Overall, my recommendation would be to order the red snapper and share it at the table and skip the paella. read more

From the airport straight to Cayo Caribe for a first-time magical experience. To start, no reservations were made so we walked up and were seated in less than 5 minutes. The hostess wasn't as friendly but our waitress was and her welcoming attitude made the experience worth the while. Drinks: The Cayo Margarita is a must but opt out from the mango and go with the passion fruit. My mango drink wasn't as tasty and after taking a sip of my boyfriend's drink, I was sold on the passion fruit being the BEST there is! It offered just enough rum and fresh passion fruit flavor. It was good to the last sip! Appetizer: We started with the Arepas Menu name: Arepas de camarones, carrucho, pulpo, mixta (pulpo y carrucho), jueyes, spicy crab Translates to: Arepas: Shrimp, crabmeat, octopus, mixed (octopus and crabmeat), spicy crab Cost: less than $10 Shareable: yes, but you would want your own. This was SO divine! The arepa was crispy on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. And while it was topped with shrimp, octopus, and crab, it was not wet but maintained a smooth consistency. The seafood inside was fresh and perfectly prepared! This dish gets a perfect 10! Main dish: Menu name: Surtido de Antojos (Sorullitos de maíz, bolitas de queso, carne frita, chicharrones de pollo y pescado) Translates to: Sampler (Corn sticks, cheese balls, fried pork. fried chicken strips & crunchy chicken bites) Cost: $20 Shareable: ABSOLUTELY Favorites: EVERYTHING! There was so much culinary greatness on the plate that it was hard to say that one item stood out more than the other. The corn sticks were sweet and offered a break in between from the salty flavor of the fried chicken and cheese balls-yet they all worked perfectly together. We thoroughly enjoyed this meal. This dish went above and beyond so it gets 10, 10, 10! Might I add that the venue was so vibrant, the music was lively, and it was perfect for our day date. The rest of the dishes we ordered were just okay. The service was a little slow, and it took some time for our food to arrive, although the staff was friendly. A standout for us was the avocado salad. They topped it with a generous amount of perfectly sliced avocado, beautifully fanned out across the entire top. It must have been a big avocado because it covered the whole salad -- fresh, creamy, and absolutely delicious. But the true showstopper -- the dish that stole the whole night -- was the empanadas. I am an empanada snob, and these were honestly some of the best I've ever had in my life. The dough was flaky, moist, and flavorful, and both the beef and chicken fillings were incredible. Im honestly shocked to see this low rating. Everything here was utterly five stars. I came for lunch at about 2 pm. I guess service wasn't super fast. But it was very typical for an island, and the server was very friendly, spoke perfect English, and was patient with my broken Spanish (I usually try to speak Spanish as I need the practice). He knew I wasn't a great Spanish speaker but unlike most people he indulged me and didn't switch to English unless I was rally confused. I sat at the outside bar, which I love. They also had tables outside and inside bar and tables. My type of layout for sure! Ok the food. My order: empanadilla de carne, empanadilla de pollo, chicharrones de pescado, y un taquito de "crazy shrimp". (Small empanada with beef, small empanada with chicken, fried fish bites, and a small crazy shrimp taco.) The empanadas were flawless. I could eat them every day for the rest of my life. He gave me some pica de aguacate (avacado hot sauce), and it was delicious (note, nothing here is actually hot if you're used to Mexican or Asian food, but it's still yummy). Now here is where the surprises start. I don't really like sea food. I order it sometimes especially if near the water. I especially don't like shell fish. The crazy shrimp taco.. I figured "crazy" meant it was spicy. Nope, it was covered in crab! Had a little sauce that tasted like reduced soy sauce. Verdict? Freaking delicious! I couldn't believe it as I kept eating it. I asked what type of crab it was. He told me two types but the only one I remember is jueyes. Never heard of them. But it was great; Mild and sweet. Shrimp was crispy fried and it was served in a flower tortilla. The fish bites were also delicious! Fresh, crispy, and seasoned. Not sure what kind of fish, but I would guess grouper. Mild, white, and perfectly seasoned. Came with some mayo type dipping sauce. Total bill was $30 for 4 plates of food. Small like apps or tapas but still a great deal imo. Two empanadas, a taco, a whole plate full of fish bites I could not finish, Crowd was great. Everyone smiled. I got several "buen provechos" from other patrons. This is what I want when I come to Puerto Rico. So far, Ashford (Condado) has been so much better than Loíza or McLaren (Ocean Park) as far as food goes. I cannot recommend Cayo Caribe enough. Wow! Talk about fresh fish and a quick fry. This awesome restaurant allows you to pick your own fresh snapper and they'll fry it up in a matter of minutes. We just ordered appetizers that was a platter that included fried chicken, fried pork, chicken tenders, risotto fritters, and corn fritter sticks, and empanadas, and a four platter of tacos. The fried chicken was cooked perfect and the flavor was not bad. The fried pork was cooked prefect with great flavor and very tender. The empanadas beef inside was tender and the dough was nice and flaky. The tacos were huge with plenty of meat inside and the sauces were tasty. The drinks were a good compliment to the meals. Really enjoyed Cayo Caribe. Service was 10/10, we arrived less than an hour before closing and we seated within 15 minutes. The staff quickly took our order and dishes arrived soon after. We also ended up staying 30 minutes past closing and staff didn't blink an eye. May be more common in PR but really appreciated their positivity and friendliness. The shrimp turnover was stellar. Favorite items on the sample platter were corn fritters, fried pork, and chicken bites. Oysters were just ok, surprising considering it's a seafood restaurant on the coast. Entrees we ordered seafood Mofongo with a side of tostones. The seafood tasted fresh and flavorful, the Mofongo was great! I'm a big fan of plantain and this dish didn't disappoint. The restaurant is located under/next to the hospital so doesn't look like much outside but has a really nice vibe nice inside. Main area has bar and tables with small wine bar further inside. 2nd time I went there where I noticed the wait staff is not the most honest. We ordered a salad to share 2 entrees and empanadillas. We were charged for 2 salads, the entrees were not great and the empanadillas came out wrong and after we were done eating. Brenda the waitress did nothing to make her mistake right and did not apologize for ordering us extra food. It felt a little scammy but I also saw the other male server weighing the red snapper with the plate they must be pretty desperate for tips there. I will never eat at a table there again. Super fun vibe for a night out in San Juan! It feels very much like a bar vibe inside but the food here is amazing. I had some of the best fish tacos of my life here! Super crispy, flavorful, and fresh. Came here with a large group of friends and they were able to accommodate us very easily. They have a really varied menu with some traditional Puerto Rican dishes but also modern dishes too, so there's something for everyone here. Lots of excellent seafood options too. Service was also excellent.
