I was really hopeful that another visit to the shack would be an opportunity to up my review. Unfortunately quite the opposite occurred. They attempted to seat us at a postage stamp sized table barely bigger than the napkin holder sitting on top of it. No thanks. The food quality has taken a steep decline. My "sea" scallops were tough, chewy, and hard like small bouncy rubber balls. The clam chowder was "off" if that makes sense. Didn't quite taste fresh and had a lot of gritty texture to it. The garlic shrimp was quite paltry. Tiny tail-on shrimp that quite honestly reminded be of a bag of frozen from the supermarket. This is our second time here and what a disappointment. The first time we came was amazing and Melissa took great care of us!! Unfortunately, this time was so bad we will not be back. I was disappointed to learn that there weren't any local oyster options left the night we went. We sat at the bar, and the bartender was attentive. My brother-in-law asked for a Miami Vice, though the bartender wasn't familiar with that drink, he made his own version of it. My sister found the drinks to be a bit too strong. In terms of the food, we enjoyed the oysters even though they were imported. There were some unique options like a grilled oyster topped with kale. I got the ceviche, it was great! My sister got raw oysters, and loved them with the house made hot sauce. My brother in law said the lobster roll was delicious. Food and experience here was OUTSTANDING! We arrived around 12pm on a Saturday and it was busy but we were sat right away at a patio table. Shortly after, an amazing 3-man reggae band played live music right next to us. We let the waiter guide our oyster order. We got the half dozen east coast oysters, 3 each of 2 different kinds, and loved them. We also got the mahi mahi ceviche and garlic butter shrimp. I am not a shrimp person at all but LOVED this dish. The mahi mahi ceviche was hands down the favorite - it was soooo fresh and flavorful. The ceviche came with plenty of yummy chips but the garlic butter shrimp could've used an extra 1-2 pieces of bread. We had to eat the last 3 shrimp without bread. At first glance the prices seem a bit high, but the portions are large to justify it, and the quality is absolutely top notch. My boyfriend and I shared the 3 dishes and were completely full. The inside is also so incredibly charming with tons of cute decor and lights. Walked by this place the prior day and it looked like a cool spot to grab a bite to eat, so after reading the positive reviews, the wife and I decided to give it a shot. We were warmly welcomed and quickly seated by the hostess with our server arriving promptly. She too was very engaging and professional. Where to start with this place--just go! The pico de gallo was easily the best I've ever had. The mushroom side dish was incredibly garlicky and packed with flavor. The warm octopus appetizer was huge and unbelievably tender--it's rare to find octopus cooked that perfectly. The crab cakes were also delicious, served in a rich, well-seasoned broth. The clams were sitting in an absolutely perfect sauce, but since I'm not a big fan of larger clams, I wasn't able to enjoy them as much as I would have liked. Loved the ambience, very nautical! Let me start by saying I don't like oysters. I know, I know... Hear me out. That's not exactly true. They're okay fried. I prefer them charbroiled. But never have I enjoyed them raw. Until today. I had a taste for fresh seafood but I wasn't sure what I wanted, so instead of committing to one dish I ordered the Fisherman's Stew.... A delightful combination of clams, mussels, calamari, mahi mahi, and shrimp cooked in butter and garlic and served with a side of the most delectable coconut and lemongrass broth. Oh. My. Goodness. The seafood was so fresh. I was especially surprised at how large the clams were! The broth was heavenly. I'm surprised they don't serve it on its own as a soup. It's divine. I was chatting with the bartender about raw oysters and he gave me a crash course on them. I shared with him my aversion to raw oysters, and after hearing my concerns he introduced me to one with a flavor profile that he thought I would enjoy. He instructed me on how to eat them for an optimal experience and offered me one, no pressure. Feeling adventurous, I obliged... And it was freaking awesome! The oyster he gave me was from Anderson Bay, Washington. It had this crisp vegetable flavor note to it which was weird... but in a good way! I'm used to oysters tasting like "post-nasal drip" with hints of "a mouth full of spare change" (that metallic taste has always been a deal-breaker for me). The bartender explained that the reason I encountered these rather harsh flavor profiles from the previous oysters I've eaten is because of the environment that they were caught in, and how the West Coast oyster that he offered me has an environment very different than the ones I was used to. If nothing else will convince you to give this place a try, just know that in the course of an hour, this amazing bartender converted me from a raw oyster hater to someone who would happily try that particular type of oyster again. Highly Recommended :D We were talking about coming here a couple days before we actually went but the day we drove by it was jammed packed and we couldn't find a place to park. So the night before we left the island we walked here from the place we were staying since it was a little less than a mile away and the weather was great. Wow! The best lobster bisque we've ever had, loaded with ingredients and full of flavor. My husband loved his whole snapper and I am still thinking about my scallops I ordered. The server was quick and attentive even with a packed restaurant. The inside of the restaurant took me by surprise since it looks like the inside of an old pirate ship with all the little gadgets like lamps and boating tools. We tried The Oyster Shack for dinner during a recent stay in San Juan, PR. Unfortunately, it did not meet the hype. First, the food.... The oyster selection was disappointing... we had the Bluepoints, served room temperature, no hot sauce, just a quarter teaspoon of horseradish in a dollop of cocktail sauce. The oysters were also small, several not much bigger than a nickel, not shucked very well either. The seafood medley was good, malanga chips on the side. The handful of chips served ran out about 1/2 way through the dish, we ordered more, and were charged for more (maybe because we received a full order the second time)... bad form. We had the mani-mani hot plate next.... We tried to order several crudo plates (sashimi) only to be told they only had about three things on the menu left for the evening... It was about 6:45pm in the evening. The waiter said something about a generator issue in the kitchen, who knows. Perhaps true, since the oysters were served warm, and our bottle of sparkling wine was served slightly chilled and required an ice bath for an hour to be palatable. On the up side, the mojito was great, one of the best ever! Second, the service... halter skelter at best. From our observations, no real training provided. Multiple servers taking orders, delivering food, apparently no one person responsible for a specific table. Service was generally slow, not "island time" slow, just slow, and periods of 20-30 minutes without anyone stopping by our "seats." We had "seats" at a counter because many of the tables in the dining room are so uneven and wobbly that it's impossible to have a meal at them. It was interesting to watch the host continue to seat people at the same tables, and couple after couple would move themselves to other tables, often moving multiple times to find a stable table. The restaurant was generally in a state of poor upkeep. We found it very interesting to observe all these things when the owner was present. He came in on his bike, with dog in tow, while we were having dinner. Aside from coming out front and bussing a table every 1/2 hour or so, seemingly oblivious to the issues with the operation of the place. Having been in the business for many years, the owner should be THE most visible employee in the house. This review is not intended as a slam against the place... it needs work: training, quality, upkeep, etc. Perhaps when you exist at the whim of tourists, the incentive isn't there to be the best. That said, in today's connected world, the net will doom your business, even if it's just a "tourist place." Improve the product, we may return. As always, we'll be watching reviews! read more

It was sweet and easy to drink, loved the nutmeg rim and felt very authentically Puerto Rican. I tried the oysters charbroiled - at $23 it wasn't cheap (goes by weight not by # of oysters but mine came with 5) To be honest i was pretty disappointed. They were so overcooked the cheese on top was burnt to a crisp and all the flavor left the building. I tried the lobster roll too and the lobster was good quality but they put it in 2 little Hawaiian rolls and it doesn't stay together at all. They didn't toast/butter the rolls either. If the flavors were there I'd say more but it kind of also fell flat for the price. All in all i spent a hundred bucks on a dinner for 1 and left disappointed. We ordered the Grouper Ceviche as our meal. We wanted a dish that was cold and fresh especially with the humidity and unseasonable hot temperature. The dish was good. The freshly diced grouper was large and tender. The lime and herbs worked its magic to "cook" the fish. Only thing to make it better would be bread so it can to soak the sauce. Our server--a larger guy with black-framed glasses--made it abundantly clear from the moment we sat down that he absolutely did not want to be there. When I asked if they had any local oysters, I received a flat "no." When I asked if they offered steamed oysters, I got another flat "no." He offered zero alternative options or recommendations, completely shutting down the conversation. The most bizarre part of the experience was when he left the menus at our table, disappeared for a while, and then actually gestured for me to get up and bring the menus over to him rather than walking back to our table to take the order. To top it all off, he literally stood there shaking his head while I was paying the bill. I still left a tip because I understand that people have bad days, but this went way beyond a bad mood. As a paying customer, you shouldn't be made to feel like an inconvenience for simply trying to order food. If you don't want to work in hospitality, you probably shouldn't. read more

Listen I love oysters, came to this place only because the name obviously hints seafood. I was surprised to see how many options they had for the oysters such as Rockefeller, Charbroiled, and Raw. I felt like being a fatty and going with Charbroiled. The oysters were good but I definitely have had better. The lobster roll now that was the real winner! A solid 9/10 only reason I say 9 because for me I prefer my lobster to be so soft it almost melts in your mouth. The sauce however on that bread really made it special .
