Delicious food. Great service. Loved the snapper , octopus , seafood stuffed pimentos , mouse dessert. We were the only guests not from San Juan. Danced after dinner on the street in fun , beautiful , energetic placita de sancturce
This place was suggested by a local and we were not disappointed. It seems everything is fried here. But I must admit the fish was amazing along with the Pyala. Avocado was superb and the fried plantain was something I never had before. Just so nice to be spoil for a change.
Very cute seafood spot in La Placita, had pretty high expectations but overall average experience with food. Got a cod fillet cooked in a sauce with garlic and butter. Sauce was great but the fish was just ok, low flavor overall. Rice and beans and plantain as a side were ok overall as well. The energy and vibe was great in the restaurant though.
Very poor customer service, slow and aloof. We misheard seafood cup for $8 when it was actually $18. That's fine, accents and all make it hard to understand others sometimes. However, we were charged $22 and when we pointed out it should be $18, he took the bill away and returned it to say $20. What? Anyway, sardine peppers were good, drinks were good, plantains were good, and the seafood plate was sooo good... but service was piss poor.
Great Seafood place right in the middle of the party spots. Awesome start to my Friday night in "La Plasita" and go out n drink and dance. You do have to be patient, the food is made after you order. It is freshly made. It's best if you grab a drink while you wait. I sat outside at a table. You can see everything going on. It was like sitting at South beach, in Miami. Full of people, even though hurricane Maria had passed. Everything seemed to be getting on track.
We had a work dinner at this establishment. The service was not the best, server was a little rude and he was not enjoying his work, he got yelled by a customer from a different table at one point and management didn't seem to care. We had calamari for an appetizer and it was good a fresh. For main entree I had red snapper and it was perfectly cooked not greasy, not dry just perfect with a lot of flavor. As a compliment I ordered breadfruit (pana) tostones and they weren't that fresh. Finally, it was very pricey so I do not feel that I will be back at this place.
After spending a few days in Puerto Rico my friend and I were a bit eager to get out of the touristy areas and find some good local fare. Since Puerto Rico is an island we were expecting to see more seafood places, but there really didn't seem to be many options to choose from. So we relied on our friendly yelp app, and for a local spot with great seafood, Tasca El Pecador seemed to be the best fit for what we were looking for. We had rented a car, so we ventured into the heart of San Juan to find this place. When we found it, it was located in what appeared to be a small little square with other restaurants and shops in a residential neighborhood. Although the neighborhood was residential and not as high class as the area we were staying, we never felt unsafe. Parking was a bit of a pain, but we managed and find decent street parking. When we arrived at the restaurant on a gorgeous 80 degree sunny late afternoon, we got a table for two outside on the patio. We ordered the sangria , which was a tad too sweet for my taste. We also ordered the fresh seafood salad, which came out served cold. It was full of octopus, scallops and shrimp, green pepper and onion. The taste was surprisingly light, crisp and a tad sweet.. Next we got a small bowl of the seafood soup which was also very light. It was what I believe to be a chicken based soup with a touch of tomato and Spanish herbs with tons of fresh seafood boiled to perfection. It was very tasty!!!! For our main, we ordered the seafood paella which not only looked amazing but tasted amazing. The rice was cooked perfectly and the dish was ample enough to feed two people and they did not skimp on the seafood at all. the seafood was very tasty...the clam and the muscle were a tad overcooked for my taste but overall the paella was just as good as the best one I had in Barcelona. I didn't find this place expensive at all. The quality of the food and the generous portions make it a fantastic value, much cheaper than many of the other places in the more touristy areas of San Juan. In fact that had to be the cheapest best tasting Paella Ive ever had...it was 16 dollars. Id paid twice that where I live. The service was a tad on the slow side but that was perfectly ok for us. Who would want to be in a rush on a gorgeous sunny 80 degree afternoon on vacation while sitting outside on a patio enjoying the local spirit and flavors of the Caribbean? Not me! I happily would've sat there all day. This experience was worth of a picture in National Geographic. This is how I will remember Puerto Rico and when I come back, you bet you will find me here.
Not sure how this place has managed to rack up such great reviews... Let's start with the good stuff. FRESH fish galore. Look at the specials, if you can read them (the writing is horrible). I ordered the seared Tuna with grilled onions, and it was great. The guy at the cash register, possibly the owner or manager was awesome. Friendly, fun and took time to chat with us. I would come back here simply for that experience. Now, the bad. Service was HORRIBLE. WE walked in and were stuffed in to a back corner at the counter. We waited for about 10 minutes to TRY to get a menu...then waited another 10 minutes just to order, before we moved seats. While ordering, our waitress really didn't seem to give a rats ass about us. When our food came, my Tuna dish (mentioned above) was absolutely delicious, but the grilled mix plate that my buddy ordered was downright gross. The calamari was bone dry...rubbery and gross. No flavor what so ever. It almost seemed like they took calamari rings that were completely frost bitten and cooked them far too long. The Clam, was nothing but a shell. No meat inside. TOTALLY not worth the $22 price tag. I almost feel as though we were targeted as tourists and given a second rate service. We had a local turn to us and ask, 'how'd you find this place?" as it is off the beaten path...I mentioned yelp...which is exactly where they can find my review. BOOM!

Nice atmosphere, very cute and quaint vibe. A wide variety of menu options and it was hard to find a place that had both calamari and octopus. We got the sepia and the calamari and the shrimp with rice and beans. Calamari gets a 3/5, sepia was a 2.5/5. It was overall very mid seafood. I think the vibe is super nice and service is good but the food sucked. Also, their passionfruit mousse was $9 and store bought. read more
This eatery has energy and vibes. Big personalities, big fun, premium alcohol cocktails, wines, and beer. A good time is what they specialize in and their waiters and staff know it. A big 70 something family birthday was happening outside and a whole bunch of characters inside. A people watching paradise for me as a tourist. Ordered the paella, which was pretty good and a craft beer. My partner ordered the garlic shrimp as per recommendation from the waiter and it was good as well. Ultimately, food was good but the experience was better. read more

Exceptional food. Definitely recommend making reservations. The outside appearance can be deceiving, but cute with little cats hanging out front and the food is phenomenal. Recommend the lobster, empanadas, mushrooms and prawns. read more

I came here with my friend while visiting Plaza del Mercado, because a quick Yelp search revealed this place was moderately priced and had good food. We were seated in the outdoor dining area. We had to wait a while for our waiter to come, but it was understandable because the place was packed and he was super friendly and helpful and patient with us when he finally got to us. We ordered the empanadillas to start with, which came with this sweet red sauce (we later asked for hot sauce, because that's the way we like it). The empanadillas were good, filled with a chicken mixture of some sort. We ordered the seafood paella to share between us. It came with a side dish, so we opted for tostones. The waiter asked if we would like avocado as well. Assuming he meant it was a part of our meal, we naturally said yes. Later, we found out that the avocado was an extra $7. I mean it was good, but I'm not sure we would have paid $7 for it again. This was my first time having paella, so I had no basis for comparison, but I really did enjoy the paella here. It was packed with seafood. The tostones were crispy and tasty as well. I liked it with the hot sauce. Overall, I really enjoyed this meal. I guess we were a bit sour about the avocado, but that was partially our fault for assuming and not asking if it came with the meal. read more

Go. If you love fresh seafood its worth the wait (if any). Conch salad - so fresh. Cuttlefish in garlic and butter - mouth-watering app. Squid with rice in squid ink - a pyramid (try it!) of flavor. Servers are super friendly but busy turning over tables. Reasonable prices and excellent quality. Do not even try to drive here. If you need a cab ask your server to call one when you get the check - street outside is boisterous on a weekend night. read more
What an excellent find! Our hosts, Emeo and Esteban, at Andalucia Guest House in Ocean Park, recommended this as their go-to spot for excellent seafood. Located right in the fabulously obscure Plaza del Mercado, Pescador is the kind of place you have to know about in advance - you don't just stumble across it. There is outside seating (much preferred) and indoor, which seemed a little too casual for what we were going for. One of the negatives of this joint was how non-proactive the staff was. We arrived, and a waiter said he'd be right with us to set us up at the open outdoor table. He then...disappeared. During which time, a local couple came and swooped in upon our desired table. And you know we did not want to be "those American tourists", so we let it be and waited. After an eternity, a different waiter came out and said he'd set us up with the next available table. In all, we had to wait about 20 minutes, but it was fine. The food was delicious. To start, we had the fish broth. Any seafood joint that makes its own fish broth is proof that they are serious. It was good, really good. Then, our mains: my husband had the swordfish filet - absolutely HUGE chunk o' fish that was slightly seasoned and just divine. I had the fried red snapper (heard it was one of their best dishes) and loved it. They took me inside to where the freshly caught fish were (on ice), and let me pick out the one I wanted. Price for these catch o' the day babies is based on weight. The red snapper I had came out to $20. Pretty good. In all, a wonderful find. Romantic setting for dinner in the evenings (but they close at around 7:30!!!) with fair prices for excellent fish. read more
Yum! I don't think I have complaints about any of the food I ate in San Juan. My travel consort had done some research and read that Plaza del Mercado was a fun spot to visit so we took a walk over after spending a morning on the beach and then did a quick yelp search to find a place to eat. We stepped inside to a packed restaurant to alert the waiter of our arrival and asked to sit outdoors. We ordered tap water (we're penny pinchers) and then tried to decipher the handwritten specials. The penmanship was not great but we had the added disability of not being fluent Spanish speakers, but our waiter had no qualms about explaining the menu to us. We ended up ordering empanadillas as an appetizer and then the seafood paella to share. The paella came with a side (choice of tostones, amarillos, rice & beans, salad, and maybe something else I can't remember) so we chose tostones. The waiter also asked us if we wanted avocado, and we responded, "sure," thinking it was also complimentary... but it wasn't! The empanadillas were filled with shredded chicken seasoned with something red (maybe tomatoes and other spices) and came with a chunky red sauce that reminded me of ketchup. We asked for hot sauce to cut the too-sweet flavor of the sauce and the waiter brought out my favorite - habanero hot sauce. The paella was yummy (though I've had better) and the portion was really generous. It was full of flavor and had a decent amount of seafood. The tostones were crisp and delicious and not at all greasy. The avocado was just a halved avocado drizzled with olive oil and vinegar and there was sprinkling of onions and red peppers on top. It was really soft and yummy, but not worth the price. There was never a shortage of customers here (we even saw a few people forced to wait for a table) so you know the food is good. I'd recommend it (but watch out for costly avocados!). read more

The Rice with squid was fishy and salty. They gave a menu along with a piece of paper listing their specials that was difficult to read. Our waitress offered no explanations and assumed we could read Spanish, which I could but I still couldn't decider the writing. The only good thing is you can select your fish. Please ask price if your dish as some of the entrees don't list the price. I'm not returning. read more

It is situated in a historical plaza de Santurce. Multiple options for food, drinks and fresh vegetables & fruits. We were recommended to eat at this restaurant and it was an excellent experience. We ate buñuelos de bacalao, arañitas de tostones, arroz with habichuela & Salmon with a guava sauce. It was excellent, the service was superb. I had 2 glasses of red wine and they were reasonably priced. I highly recommend it! read more

I vaguely remember having heard the name "El Pescador" before arriving in San Juan, but it was quickly the top recommendation we received from locals when we mentioned we'd head out exploring in Santurce our first night in town. The Plaza de Mercado, while in a relatively run down neighborhood, is a hopping scene at night (bright lights, loud music, etc). It might be a bit hard to find without the aid of a gps (aka iphone), but perhaps not. Luckily, I read in the tour book not to venture on the streets of Santurce after dark AFTER doing so :) But, I digress. The walk from condado (only about 10-20 minutes) was well worth it. They are open only until 7:30pm as it's business is mostly at lunch time for local business men/women, and on a Wednesday night they weren't crowded. I'm glad that didn't deter us! The best items on the menu are on the handwritten specials list that comes on notepaper in your menu, and if you can't make out the writing or don't know what the items are, the staff will gladly explain. An aside - I think there were at least 10 people working at this place, and it's quite small - the service is great! We ordered the bacalaitos (cod fritters) to start, and they were fluffy and delicious served with tartar sauce. I ordered the salmon in guava sauce with a side of beans and rice, and my mom ordered the seafood crepes and a side salad. The salmon was amazing (a bit dessert like, which I loved), but the crepes - THE CREPES! Holy amazeballs I would have eaten a pound of them. They were like puerto rican seafood lasanga - I think I'm going to dream about them tonight. Also, the portions are huge at a reasonable price (entrees each come with a side, range from $15-25ish). Our waiter also asked me as he walked away if we wanted the avocado salad to share. I probably should have said no cause we had way too much food, but he asked in spanish and as i was speaking mostly spanish to him, i felt sheepish that I couldn't understand him so I said yes. For $6 the size of the thing - puerto rican avocados are huuuuuge! It was delicious, and though we ate only about 1/4 of it, i'm glad I said yes. We were too stuffed for dessert, but as it's christmas time they bring over (without asking!) a complimentary small glass for each of Coquito, the puerto rican version of eggnog. But - I must say - they make theirs with almond which is different from most, and it kicks eggnog's ass. Again, I will dream about this, and am quite sad that none of the bottles I find in the shops and the supermarket will hold a candle to theirs. Long story short (too late) - GO TO EL PESCADOR! read more

My sister-in-law and I walked up to the Plaza del Mercado from Condado and decided to have lunch. Tosca del Pescado wasn't yet open but we decided to wait, and it was well worth it. We had conch salad. Our waiter told us it was large enough to split and it was. It came with a side and he recommended the tostones. They were the best I had. My sister- in-law ordered the crema de pana. It was delicious. Our waiter then brought us some tostones de pana which were incredible. An excellent lunch with a lot of food. At our waiter's recommendation, we had the white wine Sangria. Amazing! Nestor, our waiter, gave us excellent service. All in all, a very pleasant lunch. read more
