My husband and I have been wanting to check this out for a while and finally got a chance to last weekend. Thanks to the San Mateo County Parks Department, this Sunday road closure to motorized vehicles really creates such an awesome experience for cyclists, runners, snd even in-line skaters (saw a couple of those). From the main entrance to Filoli to Highway 92, the closure covers about 3.8 miles along Cañada Road in Woodside. You get scenic views of Crystal Springs Reservoir along the way, and pass the Pulgas Water Temple too. The great thing is that they open the pedestrian gate to the temple so we were able to ride our bikes in and walk around the water temple before hitting the road on our bikes again. There are porto-potties in their parking lot as a friendly FYI. You could also ride into Filoli and grab a snack at their cafe or park your bikes and check out the gardens there (with paid admission). Once you pass the Filoli entrance headed southbound on Cañada Rd, cars are back on the road so definitely watch out for them. We noticed quite a few drivers who seemed to be looking for Filoli and driving like they were lost or just unsure, if you know what I mean. Keep to the shoulder/bike lane when headed back toward Edgewood Rd. Bicycle Sundays road closure is 9am-3pm every Sunday except for holiday weekends. I have been coming here almost weekly. The official Sunday bike ride is closed, but the bike lanes are still open. There are plenty of cyclists and hikers who come here to get some exercise in. Canada road has some small rolling hills, the incline is around 3.8 %, great place to train and for beginner cyclists. There are only 2 stop signs so you don't have to stop that often either. You can stop at Robert's market to get some food and drinks, turn around, or continue on to Palo Alto, Kings Mountain Road ( for a fun climb), or where ever else you would like to go. Heading back is slightly more of a climb than heading south, so save some energy. Have fun and stay safe. read more

Yeah! I finally got a chance to make it out here on a Sunday and what a beautiful setting for a bike ride. From 9am-3pm on Sundays, a 3.8 mile stretch of Canada road is closed to traffic. I'm not much of a biker so the idea of a closed road to traffic had me sold. We were able to find parking quickly just on the side of the road at the cross section of Highway 92 and Canada. You'll see lines of cars right before the street closure. I saw lots of families with their kids, rollerbladers, as well as more pro bikers who are using the road to train. The views are beautiful with the water. The elevation gain isn't bad at all and that's coming from me a lazy biker, although we did have to bike against some wind on the way back. Highly recommend packing a picnic lunch and stopping to eat it at the Pulgas Water Temple. Makes for a great pit stop. Happy biking! read more

Although I didn't come here on a Sunday where they close all the roads, I'll review just the path itself. My friend brought me here for a ride and I loved how quiet and peaceful the road was. There is mostly a dedicated bike lane for bikers to ride and cars are pretty friendly when there is a shared road and don't crowd you. There is also a nice flat path for about 15-20 mins which you can choose to extend longer up a huge 2000ft climb or skip it if it's too hard. The entire path has pretty decent roads without too many pot holes. Overall, I'd love to come on a Sunday when everything is closed! read more

STAYING FIT IN CALIFORNIA! The beauty of living in the Bay Area is that our "hibernation" period exists for only a brief moment in any year. During this time, we find ourselves eating and sleeping more, and of course with that, comes a few extra pounds needed to be shed. Any form of exercise is great, however, if you enjoy cycling, specifically road biking, Cañada Road Bicycle Sundays is a perfect choice. Slightly over 5 miles roundtrip, from the stretch of Cañada Road between Edgewood Road and Highway 92 and back, this loop provides a wonderful beginner to intermediate ride. Besides the slightly rolling hills alongside the picturesque scenery, this AMAZING ride is closed to all vehicle traffic from 9:00am-3:00pm, every Sunday, except for Winter Sunday Holidays and inclement weather. Ride with confidence and without the fear of sharing the road with other motorists. With this sense of freedom, you can now envision yourself as Lance Armstrong, Greg LeMond or Miguel Indurain, as you pedal onward to your goal...you against yourself. Since this road is not completely devoid of traffic, be sure to watch for young children on bikes and other cyclists. Riders here are quite considerate as you'll hear the occasional, "On your left," as they pass. When starting from Edgewood Road, one will find 2 slight climbs, both less than a mile each. The turnaround point is at Highway 92, where one will find vehicles parked to signify the road closure. The return ride to Edgewood is slightly easier. Although there are less cyclists on the road in the afternoon hours, the wind can pick up slightly. Traveling downward on the return route, we often find ourselves riding between 25-28 miles per hour. My husband calls this, "Free speed!" It feels invigorating, but with the wind and speed, be sure to hold onto your handlebars! No time for drinking water or adjusting your gear here! If inclined, there are restrooms at the Pulgas Water Temple. One can even visit Filoli Gardens as it is along this route as well. We love this gem of a loop! We often ride 5 loops, totaling 30 miles. As this ride becomes easier, try to challenge yourself by decreasing your times. You'll eventually want to challenge yourself even more, by migrating to other locations with steeper hills (with motorists), but until then, this is a great place to begin! read more

I used to live in the Bay Area and biked a lot. This is one of my favorites. It is super nice to close canada road every Sunday for "Bicycle Sunday". This is relatively flat and great for intermediate bikers. It is also good to go to Filoli where there are so many flowers. read more

my running friend told me about this weekly event, when they close canada road to vehicular traffic to allow cyclists, runners, and pedestrians to enjoy the stretch of canada road between san mateo and redwood city. this was a bit of a hidden, locals secret since i'd never heard of it before....surprising given how many years i've lived & run in the bay! we arrived around 730 in the morning to find very few cars parked here, however, noticed that the road had not yet been blocked off....it wasn't until we started running that we noticed the sign that said the road would be closed from 9.00-15.00. whoops! but parking was free, all along the west side of the road and a small makeshift/unofficial parking lot on the east side of the road. even though the road would be open for another 90 min, there weren't many cars at this hour on sunday morning, so we were still able to run on the road, mostly on the shoulder to be safe. for certain portions, i ran along the dirt road, adjacent to the shoulder, since it was softer on my knees & feet. the terrain had some gentle rolling hills and allowed for a view of the crystal springs reservoir. we also passed by filoli gardens and the pulgas water temple as we headed south. although we turned around after 4 miles (8 mi roundtrip run), one can easily run about 7.5 miles, from san mateo down to woodside, before turning around...something to think about if you need a long training run for an endurance event! there are no water fountains, restrooms, or shade along this trail, but this wasn't a problem for us on this day since it was very cool and overcast, with a slight breeze. i didn't even need to bring my hydration vest since it was so cool (even in august!) . however, for those arriving later in the day, esp when temps are warm, i would highly recommend bringing water/hydration, wearing a hat and/or slathering on the sunscreen to protect yourself. definitely recommend checking this out if you're a cyclist or runner, wanting to explore something a bit different on a sunday morning! read more

I came here for my first ride after purchasing my bike 2 years ago. It's a great place for beginners and even intermediate cyclists to get some saddle time. On Sundays, they close off part of the road so there are no cars to worry about for those that are new to road biking and get nervous around approaching vehicles. Parking can be pretty scarce in the morning. It gets pretty windy here so during overcast days it can be pretty chilly in the morning, so a light windbreaker will help. Normally I ride here during the summer and the peak hours of 12-2 can get rather hot in the areas without shade, however there usually is a breeze which helps. I'd recommend you check the weather for that day so see what you need to wear. It never hurts to pack a light windbreaker. The climbs don't surpass 5%, so it's a great place for riders of all levels. I usually start on the corner of Canada and the 92.. ride all the way down to Robert's Market, hang a right and once you hit the T in the road, make another right, keeping to your left the entire time. Eventually you will hit another T in the road where there is a small cafe in a plaza on your right hand side. That's where I usually turn back around for a nice 27 mile ride. Remember to save enough energy for the last stretch back as it can be rather tiring if you are unprepared. Pack snack bars and enough water if it's a hot day. Even though the incline % is not very high, the headwinds can make it seem like you are not moving at all, that combined with your fatigue. All and all, I think this is a great spot to ride recreationally or to train in general. You can pick how far you'd like to go and is just challenging enough to feel a sense of accomplishment. Probably one of my favorite places to be on a Sunday morning. Canada is a wonderful cycling destination in the Bay Area - wide bike lanes, bike-only Sundays, family friendly... You'll see cyclists of all levels riding on Canada. There are roller skaters, equestrians, kids too... runs the gamut. Relatively flat road cycling path, around 15 miles round trip, that makes it great for beginning cyclists and seasoned veterans training. Parking is easy to find along the northern side of the road (near the lake) and all along the middle. Note that the car-free Sundays only applies to a segment of Canada, not the entire road. Make sure to stop by Robert's Market at the end of Canada for a bite to eat, quick Gatorade refresher, water refill or potty break. If I had a car, I would come cycling here way more often! read more

I'm reviewing this for runners, not bicyclist or for Sundays. Canada roads runs from Woodside 84 to Highway 92. There is a dirt path alongside 90% of the road. However, from 84 to Edgewood road it is open and exposed and relatively flat. There are a few little uphills and a good downhill from 84 to Edgewood. Edgewood is where the "real running" starts. From Edgewood to 92 (a little under 4 miles) the trails is quite rolling and can be a difficult workout. Be very watchful for poison oak. It is all along the trails and is not that well maintained. You have the option of running in the bike lane, but it is not as beautiful and scenic as the tree covered trail. You cannot take your dog on the trail from Edgewood to 92, but you can take them on the road. I would avoid running on the road during bicycle Sunday. There is no water on the entire route that I am aware of except at the intersection of Canada and 84. To enter the trail you will need to go behind the stone gate on the west side of Canada. For those adventurous types you can run through huddart and out to Canada and run for a total of 14-20 miles. If you just want to run Edgewood to 92 and back that is a little under 8. 84 to Edgewood is 3.4 miles Edgewood to 92 is just under 4 Starting at Woodside and Canada (Roberts market) and going all the way to 92 is a long run where you will clock ~15 miles *Note - If you are running from 84 to Edgewood you will see Runnymede Rd. (BEFORE YOU GO UNDER 280). Go down Runnymede (heading North on Canada this is left onto Runnymede from Canada). There is a big metal statue. Runnymede turns into a dirt trail alongside 280. This trail is much nicer than staying on Canada and is highly recommended. Runnymede will drop you off about .2 miles before Edgewood. Stay on the trail and go around the stone pillars to the left to stay on the trail instead of heading down the road read more

I can't believe we have a road like this, essentially in our backyard, 12 months out of the year. I travel so much for work and am stuck in places like Dallas, Minneapolis, Chicago, DC, ATL, PHX and they do not have pothole-free, relatively car-free roads replete with fresh air and foggy breezes from the Pacific. I have almost wrecked because I got distracted looking at the 100's of birds descending to Crystal Springs, or seeing the coyotes, deer, hares and other critters appear on cue on this beautiful road. read more

This wide open road is great for biking, even if it weren't closed for Bicycle Sundays. The bike lanes are generous and visibility is good so you can coast & climb the many hills safely. Starting out near Hwy 92, where there is plenty of parking, there are great views of the reservoir. We even saw a whole family of deer grazing on the green by the water! :) We also stopped at the Pulgas Water Temple for photos. There are water fountains and restrooms there -- I believe the only ones along the trail. As we rode closer to Woodside, we started seeing pretty gated homes (and lots of open house signs) and ranches with horses, where the dear bf excitedly insisted on petting the horses that came up to the fence. When we started our final descent towards Robert's Market and other cute old-town shops of Woodside, the feeling of success was sweet -- even if we just had to turn around and do the ride in reverse. My only complaint is that there wasn't much shade, which can be a killer on a hot day (the norm in that area). read more

Since Moving to the Peninsula, i've found out about this place through a co-worker and was I happy. First off as much of a cycler I am, this place or should I say Road gets closed just for cyclists, joggers, runners anybody to use for 4 hours on sundays. I've beeen trying to go here every Sunday but with my work schedule it doesn't help much. I'll usually start at 92/Canada Rd. and cycle down to Palo Alto Hills and back. The ride is nice with very littlle hills and takes you through a small town of Woodside and on. It can get busy with families and cyclists in the beginning parts but after mile 3 it is free forward. It's good to have things like this. Makes me happier paying my local taxes. read more

Be advised, this is not a family friendly environment. We tried to bring our two year old daughter to learn how to ride a scooter and were yelled at to "get out of the way" by cyclists riding like they were in a competition. There is no parking on the Filoli side (except a lot 1.5 miles down the road or the actual Filoli parking lot). Might be great for cyclists but not good to bring children to. read more

I think the location should be Belmont, but could only locate the Redwood city location. One end of the official Bicycle Sunday starts on the Canada Road exit on highway 92. The other ends on Edgewood Road on Redwood City. I don't recall the time the gov. official block off the road. This place is safe and offer a couple of hills. Lots of cyclist, walkers, and bladers gather here on any given Sunday (especially during the Summer). On Sundays, only ped/cyclist/blader are allowed on this road. It is pretty safe. The only things to watch out for are the downhills (need to control your speed if you are cycling) and keep an eye on other bikers. I did see a few accidents here before. This bike trail connect easily to the Tom Sawyer trail on the north or to the other bike trails (redwood city's canada road and old whiskey hill road) on the south. FUN FACT: This is part of the last leg of the Tour De Peninsula fun ride. There's this water tower or some water statue along this ride. I have not seen this and don't know what this is. This is such a great place to be on a Sunday. Over the years, have been a pedestrian, a rollerblader (on the flat land, that is) as well as a leisure biker with 1000 other people doing the same in Summer/Fall. Note: If you are very serious biker, keep heading South because the amount of families here might be alarming to you. I very well may teach my lovely superkid niece how to ride a bike here! From 280 you can see the large beautiful body of water. When I moved here, I told myself that this place would get me motivated to start riding again or it will haunt me, because I haven't been on my bike for over 5 yrs after the bad crash and it finally took more then a year after moving here, seeing all the riders near my house. For that year, I could care less about bicycles, how my cardio, which had been envied by others, my minds sharp focus still after riding 4 hours, how my body felt, violently shaking and some puking because I've gone over my limit, which to me was a certain high, like a drug and I made sure I reach it because it was my addiction, I fully admit I took cycling to the extreme. That year I didn't even watch the Tour de France even though I was offered a coach to get back in shape. But, after seeing a group of riders one day in front of my car, I followed them down to Canada on a Sunday, there were cyclists, bladders, runners totally doing their passion. It reminded me of this picnic loop in Houston where I would do my spinning and groups of bladders would draft behind me because they all knew I kept a constant pace and spinning a fast rpm, allowing them to keep up. I knew this amazing scenery by the water, with soft rolling hills would one day tell me it was time to get back on the bike. I'm a planner, a schemer in every way. I'm glad I still know what motivates me. It took awhile, but it finally did, now if I could get back to my 118 lb. racing weight, that will be the real trick. If you're a cyclist, this is the place to be, they close the street to traffic on Sundays and have a person in a truck on watch and most of the time, drinks and such on tables for cyclist, bladders, runners. Family's bring their kids here, last week this couple was trying desperately to teach their poor crying young girl to balance on her first bike. She was saying, I can't, I don't want to try any more, between her pouting, and the parents was saying, you must, don't give up. I felt really sad so I looped around, stopped next to them and said while pretending to drink, I remember my first time, I fell on my butt so many times, which wasn't true, but I did remember teaching my brother how to ride and I let go and he hit a light pole and was crying and threaten to tell our parents that I promised to not let go and did. That day he did learn to ride because of my lying so I thought it would help this day too. Canada leads into Woodside, the Mecca of cycling in the peninsula, it's where you'll hear things like "do you have everything you need" if they see you off your saddle on the side of the road, where you'll see the Velo Girls http://www.velogirls.com/ holding class group rides for new female cyclist. It's where everything cycling in the peninsula. Fun fact: Someone said this house near here is the house they shot the outside ranch house of that old sitcom Dallas. The place to be if you're training for a triathlon!! Lots of rolling hills, straightaways and if you want to tackle a big climb, take King's mountain road near Woodside. Lots of cyclist of all skills. Portions are closed to cars on Sundays but it's not hard to bike without the closures. Very scenic, breathtaking views, almost forget that you're torturing your body while your legs and lungs are burning! read more

A late Sunday afternoon ride up Crystal Springs/Polhemus to 92 and Canada. This is the hardest part mostly because you have to be super alert about passing cars. If it's a prius, sometimes I have difficulty hearing them. The rest of the ride is super smooth and fairly level. Be super careful about the stop sign at Jefferson. You can easily get a ticket (moving violation.) Big intersection at Woodside road is also known for getting tickets. I actually love getting a sun tan when I ride. Makes my teeth look whiter. Buck's resturant at Woodside and Canada is the BOMB! Lots of bikers willing to talk it up. read more

A blast! It's a good place to teach kids how to ride because they block off the first 2 1/2 miles. It's also a good place to take a beginner cyclist because it's not a difficult ride and most of the locals are very polite and watch for cyclists. It's also very beautiful. Beautiful ride. We started from the Filoli end - it starts out slight uphill. The block off starts from that attraction - there are a few speeding cars which is not cool - so be careful. Great for kids. We went all the way to the other end at 92. It's a beautiful view overlooking Crystal Springs. And windy. There was an opportunity to get on the Ralston trail - we did try as it goes over 280, but it's a steep one. We had to walk our bikes, as my kids are still young. It's a noisy crossover though. There was an erroneous posting about how signs were covered up and this Sunday event is no longer available. It seems to be incorrect - but Yelp doesn't provide such a button. Great ride, family friendly, good for getting back on the bike without cars around too. Gets a little crowded at times. Be sure to stay to the right if you're going slower than the others. Water stations at either end of the closed section of road with very friendly park rangers. If you want a longer ride, it's about 7.5 miles from 92 (northern end of closed section) to Woodside, where you can hit a cafe or bakery. Beautiful scenery, rolling road, the best 5 mile (or so) biking for Sunday. A lot of hardcore riders park here to start their longer rides, so parking can be tough. Get there a little early to be safe. There is more parking at Edgewood and Canada (a few miles south of the closed portion of road). read more

Rode it for the first time last weekend. Rode up Crystal Springs/Polhemus to 92 , Canada all the way to woodside road. It was a fairly great ride. The road is in fairly good condition and has a couple of nice rolling hills. I rode on it at 11am or so and there were lot of people but not enough to interfere with my riding style (slow and even slower up the hills) . It's nice not having to worry about cars zooming by. read more

Love to go out Canada Road and enjoy the no cars but watch out for the roller bladers! They can really get down in a tuck position and fly down some of those hills! It's great! If you go decide to leave the flat lands and go up Old La Honda....be sure to watch out for UPENUF Road....you're close to the top at that point! read more

Nope I did not ride a bike but I went running here instead. Boy I can tell you I was happy and very scenic. Well not to mention you can see miles from where you are heading. If you want to hit it a little harder always park on Ralston side just across I-280 by Highway 92 ( cause going back is going to burn - serious ascend) I ran 'till Edgewood and back total of 9 miles I like to run on the opposite road so I can see clearly who is coming in and not guessing who is going to pass me sorry bikers just give way for me the road is big enough for us to share since I like to run in the middle of the road more flat than bike lane. Believe me its bad enough running on concrete and triple the pain when the road is not flat serious shin splint pain. If you want to hit trail there is one on the side of Filoli I might hit this trail if bicycle is closed due to weather. Not a lot of runner and I don't know why since this is a good place to run. All I can say is I will be back for more and will try to hit Woodside a serious 16 miles back and forth if I can touch it. "Keep on Truckin" read more

Great idea, close off a long stretch of road on Sundays. If you're into high speed runs, would recommend doing this route (& continue further south) really early in the morning on weekends (pre 8 am) so you can go faster with less traffic (car/bike). By 9 am, this gets crowded. Or you can do the route just before sunset. Again, less bikes and car traffic. Stay safe and enjoy. read more

I cycle up and down here without a worry of oncoming traffic. Great when you're tucked into aero and can't always reach for the brakes. Good location and close to the other cycling roads in Woodside. Trial running is right off to the side to get those brick workouts in. Now I feel lazy writing this instead of being out there. read more

Canada Road is a great place to ride your bike. Nice weather, somewhat varied (but not too hilly) terrain, a fairly wide shoulder, and no cars to compete with on Sundays. I used to ride Canada Road at least once a week during my SF to MV commute, and I loved it. read more

Took my 5 1/2 year old nephew here to ride his bike with training wheels. We made it to the first gate and back. It's nice to go with such great views and no cars! The only draw back is toilets. I know, it's a road so don't expect a place to go to the bathroom for some time. read more
