I stopped by this shop while in town over the weekend while there for my 29th anniversary and talked to the owner about my frustration with my $9000 e-bike I purchased elsewhere. I paid to have it tore apart and serviced, at another shop and my creaking issue has continued driving me crazy! He explained that he had encountered a few similar issues only to figure out the seat needed tightened and I can't believe this was my issue. My Bike is like new again - ready to log some awesome miles this Spring and summer! The entire crew could not be cooler, just there to help, no pressure... just great helpful people! From the moment I walked in, I was met with indifferent staff and a general sense of disarray within the shop itself. What should have been a straightforward transaction turned into a frustrating ordeal defined by missed deadlines, poor communication, and ultimately, a failure to address the basic maintenance issues I had requested they fix. The primary issue stemmed from a profound lack of communication and technical expertise. I was initially quoted a one-day turnaround time for the service. When that deadline passed without a phone call or update, I had to repeatedly chase the shop down for information. On the third attempt, I was finally told my bike hadn't even been looked at yet. When I eventually picked it up on day four, the initial problems with the shifting were still present, and a new issue had appeared: the front brake was now rubbing severely, a clear sign of rushed work and a lack of basic quality control. The customer service was equally disappointing. When I politely pointed out that the work was incomplete and a new problem had arisen, the mechanic I spoke with became defensive and dismissive. There was no attempt to apologize for the delay or the shoddy work, much less an offer to correct the issues on the spot. Their attitude suggested that my concerns as a paying customer were an inconvenience. This interaction escalated my frustration from a simple mistake in service to a genuine feeling of being undervalued and disrespected. The outcome of this terrible experience was that I had to immediately take my bicycle to a different, more reputable shop to have the work done correctly. This not only doubled my expenses for a basic tune-up but also cost me valuable time and caused me to miss a planned group ride over the weekend. The initial shop's incompetence and lack of professionalism had a tangible, negative impact on my time and wallet, creating unnecessary stress and hassle that could have been entirely avoided with proper service standards. In conclusion, the combination of technical ineptitude, poor quality control, and the utterly unprofessional customer service has ensured that I will never step foot in that particular bike shop again. A business that cannot deliver on basic promises or treat its customers with respect does not deserve my patronage. I feel like I definitely "got got". $330 for a tune up, 1 new tire, a cassette, and something else minor. What really irritated me was the fact that they threw in another $75 worth of fixes without calling me for approval. And then there's the fact that my bike was running like shit just a month later (several gears made noise by constantly grinding the chain on the de-railer.) Never really worked as well as it did before the tune up. The people were very nice, but in the end I still feel bad about it a year later. Today, the de-railer fell off the bike with chain and all, reminding me to post a review. read more

This is a newish bike shop, and I'm so glad they are here! I believe they were previously a mobile repair service, but now Straight Wheel has two locations: one in Half Moon Bay and one in San Mateo. They are a true community gem, as they lend their support to a local nonprofit that aids Coastsiders experiencing homelessness. Straight Wheel offers bike and accessory sales and repairs. I went there in search of a lock and found a good variety available. Service was attentive and friendly, unlike my experiences at another local bike shop. I'll definitely return soon for a tuneup. My e-scooter (an obscure Chinese brand, Niu KQi3) had a flat tire and Straight Wheel Cycling fixed it by replacing the (unsalvageable) tire for me. Customer service is friendly. I'm fine with the charges ($60 labor + $44 for the special-order tubeless tire). I am withholding one star though because it took nearly two weeks to fix it, despite assurances at various times that it would be done the next day (it wasn't). read more

We had a wonderful experience renting from this little shop. They had a tandem bike that my 8 year old could ride on behind me or my husband. They also had a 15" cruiser that my 10 year old could ride. They included helmets and a lock. They were located one mile away from the coast, which actually worked out for us since we were staying at a place literally across the street from them. Our only complaint is that the handlebar started to loosen on one of the cruiser bikes, so my husband said it was tricky to ride back. The bikes otherwise were easy to ride on the flat terrain that we rode (along the Coastal Trail), and had wide comfy bike seats. The coaster brakes were a bit tricky for us adults, since we're so used to hand brakes, but we managed! read more

SWC recently open a shop in San Mateo on El Camino Real. I took my bike in for a much needed tune up & to address a couple of issues that had me concerned. Tony gave me an estimate and time frame. I decided to bring my bike back a few days later as I needed it. Christian did the repairs. He did a great job. Both Tony & Christian were very friendly/customer oriented. On the first day of a bike mini-tour down the coast from SF, I fell victim to a pretty bad chain suck incident that left my chain bent, my frame damaged and my bike in a pretty sorry state. I limped in the next morning right after they opened and they took amazing care of me! Their mechanics quickly diagnosed my underlying issue (inner chainring wear sucking the chain up and into the frame + derailleur). They came up with a solution to get me onward to Santa Cruz for the day, setup the new chain and replaced the apparently very worn rear brake pads and I was back on the road before lunch time. Excellent, friendly staff, that were patient enough to explain the issue, come up with creative solutions, and charge a very fair price. Cannot recommend them enough! read more

I have a gracefully aging Trek race/road bike from the caliper brake age. Brought the machine in to have rear wheel spokes checked. Turned out the wheel was cracked; Understandable after 20 years of AIDS Life/Cycles, wine country and coast miles. I sourced an original replacement wheel and SW put it on in respectable period of time. The difference between this shop and others was in the handling and process for both bike and customer. They gave my bike a once-over and offered to re-tape the handlebars; it was time. The wheel arrived and the mechanic checked the hub bearings before he installed - good move because though the wheel was solid, the bearings were not. Got the bike back with non-slip rubber taping, perfectly adjusted gearing and a squeaky-clean rear cassette. Communication and respect for my time were both excellent. I'll be back. This is a review for the San Mateo store. My friend told me that Christian Parker is now working at San Mateo. Christian has many cyclists that go to him for his great work. I went in today to get my rear wheel trued; tubeless tape applied and tubeless tire mounted. When I arrived, I was greeted by Tony, who said that Christian is off today. Explained to Tony what I needed done. He took it from me and started working on it. I have taken my bikes and wheels to many bike shops and not impressed by how they work on it. Many of the techs don't do as good a job as Tony. I watched him carefully work on my wheel. Making sure that the old tape is removed carefully and cleaned. Trued the wheel and double-checked it. He even cleaned the spokes and hub while he was working on my wheel, that I don't see too often. He takes great pride in his work. He charged me a fair price because he did it right away. I was expecting to pick it up the next day. I do have my number 1 mechanic in Palo Alto, but if he is out. I have no problem taking it to SWB to have Christian or Tony work on any of my bikes.
