Cedar is one of my new favorite places, and definitely my favorite mediterranean restaurant. Their hummus is so good it makes it difficult to enjoy store bought hummus anymore. They also make their pita bread fresh on site, which gives it a wonderfully soft and light texture to pair with the fresh bread flavor. It's so good that I often order extra pita to enjoy with the hummus. My go-to main course is their gyro pita, which is fresh and provides a generous portion in their freshmade pita. This has become my favorite quick service Mediterranean resturant! My first try I had one of their Manakeesh flat breads - the Beef Lahamajeen. It was a light dish with enough spice and flavor to leave you satisfied yet wanting more. (I love cinnamon in savory entrees!!) This would be a great item on the go if you fold it like a pizza slice. On my second trip I had the Beef Shawarma Pita with strips of rotisserie beef, tahini sauce, lettuce, tomato and spices. It also included onions (not mentioned on the menu) which were fresh, crisp, and offered a nice contrast to the mild and creamy tahini. OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD!!! The pita didn't look like much when it arrived, but as soon as I picked it up I knew I had a fight on my hands. Do I eat it all or just half? Lemme tell ya, halfway through my breathing got shallow. The beef was smoky; marinated to perfection. It had a bit of crunch too, which may have been due to them giving me the last bits as I arrived near closing time. I didn't mind. They filled that sucker up and it was so good! The silky tahini sauce was tangy with a mild finish. I licked some excess off the plate. I would've licked it clean had I not noticed the kitchen staff was packing up. I'm already planning my next visit. I hope to bring a group so we can pass our plates around. Plenty of parking too which was nice on the busy Friday that we went. I cannot wait to return. Yummy! Went in January 2019 at an off time around 3:00. Got the vegetarian platter. Bit into the falafel and it was stone cold. I asked if they could make me a fresh batch. About 5 minutes later they brought out the replacement. Soaked in grease and only slightly warm. Tasted day old and stale. Obviously they tried to pass off old falafel as freshly made. Blatantly disrespectful to a regular customer. Frankly, I'm shocked. Up until this point I loved this place. Strangely enough, the first time I had this style of Med food is while I was abroad in Italy. I was SO excited to see this addition to the Rochester scene and I was super impressed after ordering takeout. The pita bread is to die for and worth the trip alone. I went with the gyro pita pocket and was full for the whole night. Loaded up with veggies, meat and delicious tzatziki sauce, I was the absolute happiest. Family behind the counter was incredibly friendly and helped me decide exactly what I wanted. Food came out quickly and was still piping hot when I got home - a huge takeout win. I am excited to return and try more on their menu, especially the falafel and schwarma. This spot is definitely more grab and go casual than an Aladdin's or Sinbad's - but the authenticity here is unmatched in the city. This place has been great for takeout during the pandemic. They're organized, very nice and of course the food is ridiculously good as usual. My favorite takeout has been the 'Shawarma plate'. I don't even know what's my favorite part! The meats are tender and delicious and I'm picky about that! Their Greek dressing is bomb. I've come here twice (so far) and both times the lamb shawarma was immaculate. A good portion of everything compiled into a fresh pita pocket is what you're going to get every single visit. My only regret during my second visit was not knowing the difference between the falafel appetizer and pita. My friend ordered the appetizer the first time we came (which comes with pita and hummus on the side), so I wanted to try it by myself. Family ordered some chicken kabob sandwiches and plates, one person ordered a beef shish kabob plate, and I ordered a grilled chicken plate (grilled chicken thigh sliced over salad). I love a BYOB! With a liquor store right next door. Super busy for dine in and take out on a Thursday. The falafel is moist, baba ghanoush and hummus were delicious. Chicken flavorful and tender. My only complaint is I asked what nut they used for their baklava and they said pistachio, but it was walnuts so I had to take a bunch of Benadryl and go to bed. Got good reviews from friends. Now please note I am not as in to Mediterranean food as I am in Asian. My experience with Mediterranean food has been primarily Greek restaurants (and a little Moroccan)... The place is small, seems a little like a diner. I fondly remember the location as a bookstore. Ordered via phone. The person answering seemed a little rough around the edges, but it's the food that matters. Ordered vegetarian platter, hummus app, and shawarma. The food was pretty good for the most part. I think it is hard making Mediterranean vegetarian options stand out, and frankly the falafel and hummus were good but not that much different than other Greek restaurants. I wouldn't go out of my way and drive by a Greek restaurant just for the vegetarian entrees. The shawarma was unique. The serving size was quite big, and it was well seasoned. The meat seemed more succulent than a chicken pita, which frankly can sometimes get kind of boring to me. So definitely worth checking out esp for the shawarma. This place is an excellent choice for the unapologetic meatarians and the militant vegans in your friend circle (I told you - food brings everyone together.) They have the best baba ganoush in town and it is not close. The texture is silky smooth and the flavour is a subtle combination of nutty-eggplanty-garlicky. The hummus is good too but the baba is stellar. Their soups, salads, and rice (!!) are all on point. You really can't go wrong. Their yellow lentil soup is vegetarian (probably vegan?) and is great with the rice. The falafels are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. You want those too. The manakeesh is my kind of "pizza" - less (or no) cheese, more flavour. Try the za'atar one for a light + tart flatbread that is coincidentally vegan. I usually go with the mashawi platter that has a great selection of their made to order kebabs (chicken, steak, shaped ground beef), a bracingly acidic Greek salad and hummus (that I always sub out for baba for an upcharge...because I am worth it) - with extra garlic sauce. Alternating bites of the juicy meat, crisp + tart salad, and silky/nutty baba will have you coming back for more. Also, can we take a minute to celebrate the garlic sauce? It is unapologetically garlicky and gives zero f**ks about anyone's need for subtlety. I love it and would like to carry a portable container of it to use with everything. Oh, and how could I forget their housemade pita? Forget the keto thing for this meal. Skip your next chain pizza mistake and double down on this pita. Fluffy and warm - I use it to scoop up everything I can here (every dip, salad, falafel, kebab, garlic sauce, etc.) The shawarma can be a bit of a crapshoot. My tip: Look at the swivelling spits of meat and pick the one that is not down to its last legs. (I understand the challenges of serving shawarma in Rochester where you don't have the guaranteed volume to keep the glistening meat fresh by serving it constantly.) Nevertheless I am always hopeful they will get the customers necessary to nail the shawarma thing eventually. The service is fast casual style. You order at the counter and take a table number. They bring you the food. They bus the tables when you are done. The owner is genuinely friendly and invested in making sure you love your food. The first Yelp review for this place was 20 months ago, and in that short period it's attained 220 reviews with 4.5 stars. Do you really need to hear more? My only tiny complaint about this place is that they need to make their menu more public, and at least have paper menus to take with you. Otherwise, this is a gold star Mediterranean joint. Aladdin's is better if you're on a date or something. But... well, I'm never on dates, so I'd prefer the noisy little deli environment. If you're lookin for that, then you'll also find a benefit in terms of food quality and wallet friendliness. You can see every little thing that is happening to your food at this place, and it's lovely to watch. The sheer quality of the pita bread allows them to forcefully CRAM ingredients into the pocket without worrying about ripping it. I've recently been on a huge Mediterranean kick, and I'm pleased to say that this is easily the best I've had in the entire city. It's so good in fact, I suggest buying mass quantities when you eat here and freezing the rest for use in place of anything you would normally buy from the grocery store. Magical. My girlfriend and I went into this restaurant with high hopes because of the amazing menu they have. Unfortunately, most of the menu was closed because "they shut down the oven" which means the majority of the food we wanted to try, we couldn't. We were off to a bad start but we decided to stay and have what was open anyway. It got worse from here. The cashier asked if we wanted to eat at the restaurant to which we responded yes. We were served food in styrofoam containers even though we said we would be dining in. We could have avoided the environmental impact from the take-out containers but I can only imagine the impact this restaurant has by serving customers food in unnecessary plastic. read more
