Wow! I'm amazed that Cedar River construction doesn't have more reviews on Yelp. We contacted eight different contractors to just get a fence quote and only a handful of them actually got back to us. One even gave us a quote and when I called to book the job, they never called back. We found Steve's website online and he called us back within a day, was out to do the quote with in a few days after that and started the job within about a week! He was prompt, professional and not afraid of technology (I.e he knew how to respond via email--which was great because then we didn't play phone tag.) He used quality lumber from a local company, got the job done on time and delivered high quality work. His quote was just a bit less than other quotes (yea!), but generally all the quotes we got were in the same ballpark. So it was really his promptness, communication and professionalism that sold us. The site was clean and orderly after they left and we came home to a beautiful cedar fence. I especially like the gate design. If we ever re-do our deck or extend the fence line, Cedar River will be our first call. I'd recommend Steve's work to anyone! read more

We wanted a new back yard fence, and also needed to have a wood deck refurbished. We obtained quotes for each project from several contractors. Steve Taylor did a good job of clearly describing the proposed work in his quote, provided good follow up, and answered any questions in a timely manner. Though he didn't have the lowest proposed pricing, we selected Cedar River Construction for both projects as their pricing was fair and Steve earned our trust through the quote process. Cedar River Construction did a great job on both projects! Alfredo's fence team removed our old fencing, built our new fence, and was eager to satisfy us. Adam's deck team did a great job of removing our old painted deck boards and deteriorating wood handrails, completed minor repairs and upgrades to the existing support structure, and installed beautiful new Trex deck boards and handrails. We hired Cedar River Construction to repair a section of fence that had fallen. There were two panels and a gate. A post had to be replaced also. I'm not sure how I can explain the complete lack of customer service this young man has. He appears to do things they way he wishes to do them and not the way the customer requests. The panels as well as the rest of the fence rests on either gravel. the top of a rockery or both. There are not wide gaps between the ground and the bottom of the fence. Well at least not until Cedar River Construction "repaired" a portion of the fence. When they were done there were gaps between the rockery and the bottom of the fence and gaps between the post and the adjacent gate. One of the two panels they repaired had split boards lining the top and bottom of the vertical planks. Instead of 12ft boards Cedar River Construction used bits and pieces of shorter 8ft boards to line the top and bottom of the planks. The original fence had solid long boards on the top and bottom of that section. Cedar River Construction butted boards together over the length of the section. It looked piecemealed. On to the gate. That was a horror. There was a big gap between it and the post to which the latch was attached. A chunky 2x2 was placed over the gap. Again piecemealed. The 2x2 was cracked on the bottom where they had screwed into it. The latch could not be secured from the inside of the fence which was a huge problem because we have a public trail that runs behind that gate. My husband and I let him know that this was not acceptable and he came back a couple of days later and screwed another chunk of wood onto the gate and slapped a hasp on that. The end of the hasp entered into the 2x2 screwed to the post next to the gate. All it would have taken was a strong push and the 2x2 with hasp bolted into it to be compromised. We attempted to reason with him on the gap at the bottom of the fence and the problem with the gate but he would not be moved to make this right. His attitude appeared to be that he uses what he uses and that having a gap at the bottom of the fence is the way it should be. It didn't matter what we wanted or what we paid well over two thousand to have done. He would not fix the issues that we had with the fence. His general demeanor appeared to be that he would not do anymore work on this project. Honestly, I am really glad he did not! It was a nightmare. They left wood pieces strewn behind the fence, they knocked loose pavers near the post they put in and left pieces of wood strewn in the yard. The fence section looked like a first timer tossed it together. We hired another company to repair the repair that Cedar River Construction had done. I would recommend staying far clear of this company. read more

Builders were on time, did a great job, quality of the lumber was excellent (my neighbors even commented on the quality of the wood used) they use real 4x4 posts (measuring a true 4.125 inches x 4.125 inches) unlike the 4x4s you get at Home Depot or Lowe's which are like 3.75x3.75. Tl;dr - Buyer beware - owner refused to correct issues that he admitted were his workers fault. Our story - we recently hired this company to build a simple cutoff style fence - and because we have pets we requested the fence go all the way to the ground. Upon completion of the fence one entire side was anywhere from 1"-8" off the ground (see pictures attached). We called the owner to ask him to resolve the issue. Owner said they raised the fence off the ground to maximize the height - per the other neighbor (which neighbor says they never talked about). They never consulted us, never called, he said they knocked on the door once but I was home all day and the only knock was at the end of the day. When I asked the owner in what world would a fence sitting off an uninstructed ground be acceptable - and he said of course it's not acceptable. After many phone calls with the owner Steve he admitted fault but only gave us 2 solutions. 1 - put an ugly trim board at the bottom that only went across part of the fence and didn't match the style of the rest of the fence for free. Or pay $$$ to have them come out to install longer boards so that the fence would go to the ground as we agreed upon. He admitted fault but still wouldn't fix it. Be warned.. DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY for any specialty or required quality work. This companies estimator promises work to be done verbally, in text, in email and writes contracts incorrectly with NO follow through with her estimate and confirmations. **after the agreed estimate and contract we we're told when we brought our grievances to the owner, Steve, that " we don't build those type of fences" ! So a HUGE waste of time and I did not get the fence for my dogs as requested and had to pay more because the estimator measured improperly. Make sure to watch over everything they do so they cannot say "I'll let you know when I'm done", mismeasure and come back with an extra 1k charge. Plus double charge for the agreed upon work that was not properly written in the contract, if I still wanted it. An extra 5k. Absolutely NOT. Work is not done to agreed upon specs and the owner of the Company is NOT willing to fix anything. Be warned: the contract better have EVERYTHING detailed, down to where you want a screw, where you want soil to be placed and understand and question anything written on the estimate. Have the contract rewritten as many times as needed so there's NO MISSING COMA. Do NOT trust them to take proper measurements. Make sure to recheck! Should there be a problem, * caused by them *, they will use the contracts "we do not do landscaping work" to put responsibility on you. They will also say "let the job manager know the day of work" ! This is a lie and they use this as a way to say "NOT written IN THE CONTRACT" although the contract tells you to do so. I am writing this as it's not worth it to take them to court and sue, for us, but I'll also be contacting the BBB and hope to prepare others should they move forward with this company. Extremely awful customer service from Steve, the owner. Mirissa promises work and wastes your time when making the estimate and contract as their lies with no follow through. Even when you have them on video tape, text messages and emails saying otherwise and stating one thing they do not hold up to their work. Be aware and be prepared!! read more

I'm not sure why there are negative reviews about customer service, my experience with Cedar River Constructions customer service has been nothing but stellar. I obtained 5 bids for the replacement of a fence that was rotted and falling over, and even though they were the lowest, I took my time to look up other reviewers of their experiences. Price isn't the only thing to look at, best value is the goal. The team arrived early both days, ready to work. We did have a misunderstanding on the placement of some posts, but Steve was very responsive and we worked it out quickly. The fence is shared with three neighbors and everyone is very impressed and happy with the final product. I'll be calling on Cedar River Construction again when the time comes to have a second story deck installed. read more

TLDR: DO NOT GET YOUR FENCE DONE/REPLACED BY CEDAR RIVER. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL OWNER. As you starting thinking of mending your fence this spring, you might be tempted to consider Cedar River. You might even be taken in by the soft spoken Marissa (who *is* professional and patient). However, once they have your contract you have to deal with Steve, the owner. Steve is a thoroughly unprofessional person. He took half the money from us 3 neighbors, tore down the fences across 3 houses, and stopped work for 3 weeks. Just refused to show up. Further, he got into a shouting match with us, and demanded an apology before he would return. In all, it took them 6w to finish the work that they promised would take a week. There are 3 dogs between the 2 houses who had to be kept indoors for all that period, which was clearly mentioned multiple times before, during and after signing the contract. But Steve didn't are. It looked like they had found a better contract elsewhere and could not wait to get out of doing the work. And after all that, the work was absolutely shoddy. Thin, cheap wood that already looks like it's ages old, slats already swinging in the wind, and the bottom of the fence was open (we had to get extra wood from Home depot to cover the gap. His crew left bags of dirt that they dug up in huge garbage bags, and Steve demanded $500 extra to have it spread around the yard. We had to finally move that. They also removed tiles from the walkway and left them unfinished, claiming they didnt have the tools to cut them to size and fit them back. They crew also left soda cans and food packets strewn around the yard. This happened in early 2022, and the overall behavior of Cedar river, and Steve in particular *STILL IRKS*. Very poor workmanship, our fence is not level or straight. We were promised a cedar fence but a great deal of it is made with pine and it is already rotting and falling down after only 8 years. They used nails instead of screws and many of the boards are also split. We are so disappointed. We paid them a lot of money for a poorly constructed fence made of poor materials. We got a quote from cedar river construction to come and replace the fence between us and our neighbors. Their team came and assessed the site multiple times and gave us a quote and planned start date. They took 50% of the cost up front and then showed up to work only for 1.5 days. They broke down our old fence and then dug up holes for some posts and then refused to show up to work after that. Despite multiple calls to reach them, we have limited to no response back. Then we receive a text message from the owner Steve that they need more money to lure his workers back and pushed out our construction by 2 weeks. This is a trap where they give a quote to get the job and then take your deposit money and then just don't show up to work; after demolishing your existing fence, putting you in a very vulnerable position. Learn from our mistake and AVOID this company at all costs. They are NOT professional nor reliable. read more

I reached out to CRC to schedule an estimate and was thrilled when they suggested 11am the following day. I was surprised but impressed that they suggested a definite time rather than a window. The next day, at 10:40am, I was wrapping up a community meeting held in my home, when Steve arrived early. I let him know that I needed 15 minutes but would be ready by our 11am time.. I ended my meeting and came outside at 10:50am looking for him 10 minutes before our appointment - but he'd already left. He sent me an email saying "sorry we can't wait", which was baffling since our appointment had been for 11. I emailed him back to say thanks but that the experience was a red flag; he responded to say that I was a red flag too. So... that happened, and I'm still kind of baffled by the whole thing. Probably best to have a bad experience early and just move on to the next contractor. I would give him a one star but don't want to tank a small business's rating for one instance of bad customer service. read more

AVOID AT ALL COST!!! Horrible customer service! The job was simple, replace fence exactly as it was with a door. Unfortunately, he could not follow direction and decided to build it however he felt like. The old fence had a diagonol slab of wood on the inside (not facing the main road), Steve decided that he would have that slab of wood face the outside (to the main road) for some unknown reason. Weeks later, I get a call from my HOA stating that it needs to corrected. I email Steve and basically, says that its too bad he doesn't care and says that if I want him to come out to fix HIS mistake that I need to pay $400. This company is a joke and customer service is the worst I have ever seen. Does not know how to do a job as needed and has a terrible attitude. read more

Josef, lead on job, answered all my questions as fence removal and replacement done. Impressed Steve checked in on job and pitched in digging post holes. Used quality materials including stainless nails, heavy pressure treated posts and #1 cedar boards. Josef even came back after job done following day to address concern had on gate hardware and brought solution. Clear quality work and in demand based on lead time, but once on schedule all proceeded as planned. Don't see this fence coming down like neighbors already has in less than year. Can't speak highly enough of these folks. I have had 3 prior fence installations at other houses and would rank CRC best of them all in terms of service/cost/value. We have a large yard needed over 550 linear ft of fence after spring winds finally knocked down the one the house came with. I got 3 bids (1 big outfit, 1 small outfit, & CRC) and CRC was best price for value. For what other's asked (or less) for basic fence, with CRC we got pipe-in-post and an extra cross rail for extended durability in wind and weather (at same or less than basic fence with other bids). All cedar, beautifully done. Gates are STURDY. Crew was on time, polite, professional and a joy to work with. The appraiser/scheduler was prompt, communicative, answered all questions and helped alter small additions along the way (adding some pressure board to sloped dirty areas, etc). Any delays or changes were communicated to me in timely fashion. Work was started about 4.5wks after downpayment/contract. If you are looking for a great looking, high value fence from a local company doing great work who communicates along the way and has a great crew look no further the CRC. read more

Steve responded to my inquiry within a day, and came to estimate the fence repair work that Saturday as promised, very punctual and polite. The following day, I received his quote and shared it with my neighbor since we were splitting the cost. My neighbor thought it was a very reasonable price. Since Steve is quite busy, we had to wait a couple of weeks to get his opening. His team showed up this Wednesday morning as scheduled, finished the work in an hour. Horrible Job, see all reasons bellow: - Many of the boards installed for the fence were missing nails. - Several of the boards were put on top of each other and needed to be removed and replaced. - Many of the post caps were split. - Nails, cement chunks, staples, trash and metal wire clippings were left all over the yard. - Found out from my neighbors later that they knew two of the guys of the 3 man crew as locals at home depo. They went to school with the guy a few years prior. This was disappointing considering the prices and promises of quality. - Workers were not provided adequate tools and were using a circular to cut fence board standing up, holding them with their hands. One of the workers sawed into his finger during construction. HUGE liability! - They promised delivery on a certain date and were a week late. - Tried to correct some of the issue with the owner Steve but he immediately acted like everything was my fault even for inconsistencies with their company I had in writing. After opening a BBB complaint he promised to remove one of the charges in dispute. Feel sorry for his employees. On the final bill the item was there again. Hope it was worth it getting black listed on the tech contractors list! read more

I scheduled a time for an estimate, Steve came at the designated time and date. Received my estimate the next day. Tried to get bids that fast from other local companies. He was the only one who responded in kind, like my job wasn't too small for their company. I waited a few weeks before I scheduled the work, then had to wait a few more as he's so busy. Bait and Switch on Bid. They responded quickly to a request for an estimate to provide a cedar fence and provided a competitive estimate with a proposed start date. I immediately accepted the bid and asked them to confirm the start date. Then the problems started. They wanted to push my project out 6 additional weeks - unless I agreed to pay an additional 15% fee to "expedite" my job to the date they originally proposed. When I declined to pay the additional 15% fee and asked for a start date at their original estimate price, they weren't interested anymore. Lack of integrity at the beginning of a project makes it hard to trust to do the work. read more

He advised he would send me a bid by the following day. I didn't receive a bid, so I texted him to inquire about when I would receive his bid. I never heard back from him. This company gets more than one star for replacing our fence because they gave us an estimate quickly and responded promptly to emails before the job. Also, the fence looks great. However, when the time came for them to start the job, they didn't let me know until the night before that they would have to start the next week. They kept pushing it back last minute. I had to wait at home for them to start so it made it hard to schedule anything. I would have just let it go and not written a poor review about that, but then 2 months later I got an email saying I still owed the tax on the job. During the estimate Steve said that if we paid in cash/check he would waive the tax. When I called to ask why we got an invoice saying we still needed to pay the tax, he told me that that only applied if we made the check out to him instead of Cedar River Construction. I know that that wasn't made clear to us during the estimate because if it was we wouldn't have done it, as it sounds sketchy to write a check directly to the person instead of the company. Steve said that I'm the second person this year to have that "misunderstanding", so he needs to do a better job making that clear.
