To be honest, after I walked in the cafe on a stormy day, I am quite a fan of the place, just for its decoration and ambience. However, after I ordered a cup of coffee latte, I waited almost 15minutes at the counter to get my drink. The guy before me orders a glass of juice and I couldn't understand why it took ages for the waitress to just make that... The owners make this place a true gem. I had avocado toast with egg and juice. I initially ordered orange juice (they were out of oranges), then grapefruit juice (out again), and then pineapple juice (not enough fruit). (They freshly squeeze all their juices so they were out of the fruits, but was expecting more delivery later that morning). Finally I ordered a small size apple juice mixed with carrot juice and that was fantastic and it was even better that the owner gave me a larger size as a service. The nutty yet soft multigrain bread complimented the creamy avocado well and a hint of lemon juice and red pepper flakes gave enough kick to keep the toast exciting. Of course, fried egg on top makes everything better. I would like to try their other juices when I go there next time... Maybe I'll try some of their muffins too. Walked into this coffee shop while I was trying to find a different coffee and donut place and was sad that I couldn't find the other place but this place did not disappoint! I'm honestly happy that I found this place instead because the service was exceptional! I ordered a pumpkin mocha iced coffee which they don't have and they made me a special coffee melted chocolate chips for me and really went above and beyond. This place is your typical cozy coffee shop (not in a bad way). It's got a more modern feel though. For example, they use yoga balls as seats for some of the tables. Another unique aspect of this place is that they allow dogs! Prices are a little high and service is a little slow. I came here to meet a friend for lunch this week after finding it on yelp. I had a pleasant, if unremarkable experience. The ice coffee was good, as was the balsamic chicken wrap. They also seemed to serve local ice cream, but I didn't get a chance to try it. Staff was nice and they let us sit and talk for 2 hours without bothering us. It's a little out of the way for me, but I would come back if I needed a place to sit and work quietly. read more

This was a random find while driving north to visit family. A search for cinnamon buns found me stopping at this place for breakfast-- alas no cinnamon buns today but they did have a limited hot breakfast menu with a variety of egg sandwiches, Belgian waffles and açaí bowls. They also has tea, smoothies, coffee and various pastries. The avocado toast was pretty good with the creamy avocado, crunchy toast, the runny yolk, a touch of heat from the red pepper and the tart from the lime juice. The English muffin sandwich the boy ordered was also pretty good; a bit on the messy side as the cheese and bacon looked to be escaping the sandwich on first glance. They did cook this on the flat top I guess so the sandwich was a bit pressed. I like my egg sandwiches with either a sunny side/over easy type egg or scrambled. This egg was over hard-- so not my favorite. As this was the boy's sandwich we didn't ask if they could do it scrambled so perhaps that was on us. They also had speciality lattes and teas we each got a speciality latte. They can adjust sweetness if you ask them to. My dark chocolate caramel latte was good but perhaps a tad too sweet for me. Family owned, delicious, quaint interior, outdoor seating in the summer This is a cafe I frequent because of its quaint character which is a nice break from all the Dunkins and starbucks that exist throughout new haven. Their coffee is superb, they even have nitro brew on tap! Very reasonable prices for millennial style food like avocado toast or just your go to egg sandwiches. I haven't eaten here for lunch yet but they have plenty of lunch menu options. The inside has paintings from local artists that are for sale. They have a giant window spanning their storefront giving the inside a lot of natural light. They have a bar table and stools facing the window making a great atmosphere for studying, reading, reflecting, etc. In the summer they have outdoor tables on the sidewalk where I've brought my dog many times. They even bring out a dog bowl of water when they see you have a pup. There was one day when it rained in the morning but cleared up later in the afternoon. As a result the outdoor tables were not set up. When I arrived with my dog and asked if they were going to put any tables out, they gladly set some up outside for us! This is an adorable little cafe in the 9th Square area of New Haven. The owners are really warm and welcoming, and the cafe is a great spot for studying, since they play the music softly enough. I can't speak to their other food, because I have become completely addicted to their egg sandwich and cafe mocha, and have it every single time I'm in New Haven. Initially we ordered an iced latte, a mocha, an açaí bowl, and a belgian waffle with nutella and bananas. The latte turned out to be almost entirely water, while the mocha was unremarkable with waxy chocolate shavings. We asked to replace the latte with another, this time hot to avoid the complete lack of flavor. The new drink was equally as bad, sour and barely tasting like actual coffee. The belgian waffle was soggy, having been drenched in a frankly sickening amount of nutella. The açaí bowl was bland and tasted like it was made from a cheap bag of powder. I really don't see how this place has 4.5 stars. Edit: A response from the owner has been posted. However, we don't drink at Dunkin' Donuts and didn't make any comments comparing the two. The latte's issue wasn't that it was thin, it was that it tasted like water. The chocolate shavings had a very waxy texture, even if it was real chocolate. Additionally, the waffle was eaten immediately after taking it out of the cafe, and regardless of the sogginess, it was still way too much nutella. I have been frequenting Cedar Hurst Cafe for about three years now. The owners, are great people, really down to earth and personable. The atmosphere is very comfortable with seats ranging from bouncy balls, to big arm chairs. It is perfect for a work meeting, or to meet up with old friends. I stopped drinking coffee about 7 months ago (I will likely start again, but thats another story) but when I did cedar hurst was the first to introduce me to both Nitro coffee and Cold Brew. Both very smooth and great. Nitro coffee ends up looking like a tall glass of Guinness, which threw everyone at work for a loop when I walked in. Since I have stopped drinking coffee I will often get the Acai bowl with coconut, granola and strawberries. It is excellent. Cedar Hurst always has whats new in healthy food, whether it is a yogurt bowl, a matcha tea or a smoothie. They are always up to date on the latest trends in health foods! If they are having it in Hollywood or in a trendy New York Coffee Shop, you will likely see it there eventually. When I was a carnivore I would often get the bacon egg and cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread. It was probably one of the best bacon egg and cheese sandwiches you can get in the area. I am not sure what it is, but the way they butter the bread, and the cheese they use is tremendous. It all just works. Throw a little lettuce and tomato on that bad boy and it works double time. If I was to go there for lunch I would grab the Tuna melt. It is on the same bread as the bacon egg and cheese, and again the way the bread is seasoned and the cheese they use is what makes the sandwich. The tuna is not to dry, with just the right amount of Mayo. I would highly recommend Cedar Hurst to anyone in the area. walked in ona Sunday 2/11! place was not packed but a little busy. placed my order for a latte and avacado toast! Had a seat, was on the phone when I entered establishmen. And continued my conversation while I waited for my order.My coffe came out 15 minutes after I ordered and I went back to my seat to continue to wait. While noticing I had been there for close to 30 minutes now I approached counter inquiring about my order and was told it would be another 5 minutes, they were busy. by this time the restaurant had cleared out! And I had to go, so asked if I could be refunded for the avacado toast as I didn't have anymore time to wait. I was told by the gentlemen that he only works there and doesn't know how to issue a refund, but he could call a manger which would result in the same amount of time that it would take for my order to come out. Stopped by this morning with my wife and parents for a late breakfast and had a great experience. Great food, great coffee, great service and the kind of laid-back, friendly atmosphere that makes you want to be a regular. We were waited on by (I think) the owner and his wife, both were extremely friendly and helpful (and patient) with the four of us. We had an avocado salad, an egg sandwich on an everything bagel, a tuna melt, waffles with fresh fruit and several different coffee drinks. Everything was made fresh to order and tasted great. Addition of mango to the avocado salad was unexpected but worked really well and is something we may try ourselves at home. The waffle with fresh fruit was just sweet enough, didn't really even need syrup. We don't live in New Haven but travel through occasionally and will definitely stop in again. read more

My absolute favorite coffee shop in New Haven-and I've pretty much seen them all. The ambiance is terrific, with great tables and nooks for chatting or studying. The management is so friendly, warm and accommodating. I asked to have them fill my water bottle with tap water and instead they took one of their plastic water bottles that was for sale and used them to fill my bottle for free, just so that it would taste better than the tap. So considerate! The coffee itself is wonderful. Their pumpkin latte with soy milk might be the best latte I've ever tried.
