We stayed at a nearby AirBnb and noticed the cafe and decided to have lunch there before settling in. We quickly became regulars during our few day stay in New Haven. For Lunch we both ordered sandwich specials, they were fresh and flavorful and the wait wasn't too long even considering it was a pretty busy Friday Afternoon. I also ordered a vanilla Latte, which was very good. Later that day I met with a client back at the cafe, I ordered a Crown smoothie and it was fabulous, fresh ingredients and they offer a variety of items (such as protein powder) that you can add in for minimal charge.The base price of the smoothie is a little higher than you might see other places, but with the super fresh ingredients it's 100% worth it (you aren't getting a mix or pre-made smoothie). My client ordered a latte, and we got a small baked good for her daughter - all wonderful. The next day (again, we became regulars) I went down to the cafe and grabbed a latte, a smoothie and two breakfast sandwiches to bring back to the AirBnb for my husband and I. I had a wonderful chat with the owners, who were very nice (much like the rest of the staff). The breakfast sandwiches were very good, fresh made and not super tiny like most places. Overall the place was wonderful and look forward to visiting again if we are in New Haven. It was clean, bright, full of natural light. The staff was all very friendly and attentive. Cedarhurst is a great neighborhood coffee shop that doesn't really excel at anything, but will meet pretty much any need. While not a "third wave" spot, the coffee here is really good and comes in generous portions. The food menu is pretty standard for a coffee shop, but they have some nice touches like being able to add prosciutto to your breakfast sandwich, which also comes on a delightful wheat bread. There's quite a lot of seating for such a small cafe and the service is pretty good as well. read more

Darling local independent coffee shop in New Haven. A bit of a walk from campus but close to downtown and the Omni. Have the classic espresso based beverages as well as trendier coffee drinks such as nitro cold brew. Friendly service. If you want a place where you can have a fresh and light breakfast, Cedarhurst Cafe truly is a great spot to go to! It has a cozy feeling on the inside! The food is fresh, so it may take some time to get to you. Their freshly squeezed orange juice is amazing, although expensive! This place can also be a little pricey in general, for not a lot of food. Then again, I'm not a CT native, I was just visiting Yale, so it may not be as pricey as I think. Pit stop on our way to MA from NY. We got a dark chocolate peanut butter latte and two tuna melts. The latte was great, very natural and not super sweet. Today was my first visit to Cedarhurst Cafe and the experience was a pleasurable one. The staff is very kind and talented with making all of the delicious treats they offer (which is many). Tranquil atmosphere, making it a perfect environment to relax and get some classwork done if need be. My girlfriend even had a minor issue with one of her orders and the staff didn't hesitate to compensate her with a new one! A perfect representation of what great customer service looks like. Ughh, counter help rude. Egg sandwich was probably first in my life I couldn't eat. On some type of herb bread, eggs rubbery and cheese not melted. Saw the most amazing thing, on a different order counter handed customer wrong coffee, the customer drank from it ...counter help realized they made mistake grabbed it out of her hands and handed to the correct customer. For starters, the quality of fare is really decent. Don't think I knocked off stars for that. And the interior is charming. But I really don't understand this business. The owners took it over from previous shop and didn't change a thing (besides the name, which probably lost them a loyal base). The only thing that really changed that I can see is customer service. After 3 visits, it takes 15-20 minutes to get almost anything. One person isn't enough to fully man this location, it's a catch 22 I assume: being prepared for customers costs money. Not being prepared costs customers. If you want to be apologized to- more than once per visit -- cedarhurst is the cafe for you. read more

We got the Belgium waffle with dark chocolate chips and the egg sandwich. I was a bit disappointed with both selection especially since it took 20-30 minutes for our food (wasn't busy either) and when we got it, the waffle with chocolate chips was literally just sprinkled on the waffle as if it was an afterthought. Other places I get waffles with chocolate chips, it's cooked with the waffle not just sloppy sprinkled on top. The egg sandwich was dry and bland and best. For food, I'd give it 1/5 for atmosphere and cuteness of the cafe and for the service, I'd give it a 4/5 and as for speed 1/5. The place is cute and I can see myself studying or reading here with a cup of coffee/espresso but I wouldn't come here for the food. read more

Cedarhurst Cafe is one of my new faves. It's been open since November, but I just stumbled on it this weekend. I had a coffee--the dark roast was delicious on its own, although they do have various milks to add (like hard-to-find-in-a-coffee-shop almond--yay!) also $2-something for a large, which is not bad at all considering prices of other shops downtown. The food is really good too. You can tell they pay attention to quality and where their food is from. The owners are from Milford so a lot is sourced from there (like Kathy's biscotti which is the size of your head and Walnut Beach Creamery ice cream which is the best in Southern CT!)! It's great for lunch. I had the sriracha chicken wrap with mozzarella and greens on a whole wheat wrap. Yummy and healthy! $7 for a humongous wrap that also came with their potato salad, which was very tasty, and I don't even like potato salad! Looking forward to their prosciutto & egg sandwich on a NY bagel next time I'm in. They have awesome fresh pressed veggie and fruit juices too. The celery/ginger/cuke/lime was so refreshing on the hot afternoon I was there. I agree with what other reviewers said about the owners--a sweet, kind couple that treats you like a regular and genuinely seems to love what they do! The atmosphere is very cool--the music isn't too loud and there are various seating options, including exercise ball chairs. It's the perfect place to sit and chat with a friend or study. It's a bit quieter there and everyone--staff and patrons--are friendly and smiling as opposed to the jaded employees and self-important vibe of some other shops downtown. It's way down on Crown St., across from Firehouse 12 and Cafe Nine. There is always a parking spot in front--bonus!! A great, homey coffee shop. Owners Teri and Tom are the nicest people, who took over Greenwell back in November. It's a great place to get work done, with good, healthy food & smoothies (and probably the best coffee around). The new owners have also added to-go foods (muffins, bagels, etc), so it's easy to swing by and grab a quick breakfast (though I recommend staying for the egg sandwich w/ veggies). Instead of going to the Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts up the street, walk a few blocks down and support this lovely local spot. And if you used to go to the old Greenwell, come back to Cedarhurst. It's the same friendly spot, with less pretension (no dry spaghetti to stir your coffee, sorry) and more of that local neighborhood vibe. read more

Dog-friendly is an understatement. The owners (and quite a few of the diners that day) LOVE dogs. My puppy and I sat in the comfortable dining room. There is seating for every preference - exercise ball, comfy armchair or straight back. I had the avocado toast, a cappuccino and an orange juice (fresh-squeezed!). All delicious! The bread used for the toast is amazing. I wound up getting one of their huge biscotti and an egg sandwich with bacon to go. Both were yummy and the egg sandwich may be the best I have ever had. I came here because of its high Yelp rating and its proximity. We were looking for a place that served breakfast and had outdoor dining so we could eat with our dog. It was a pleasant surprise to arrive and discover that our dog could actually join us inside of the establishment. It was a good thing too, because it was over 90 degrees outside. We ordered waffles, with sides of bacon, an iced salted caramel latte and a chocolate biscotti. The severs were super friendly. They gave us a cup of water for our dog and a nice sized treat for free. The waffles were delicious! I could've done without the bacon but our dog enjoyed it. The latte and biscotti were great too. The bathrooms were clean. The set up was nice. The curve of the main chairs were tight and not good for a person with hips (haha). Luckily, they had plenty of seating options, making it great for a small group dining or people just grabbing a coffee while they work on their laptops. read more

I became a regular of this shop under its previous owners (when it was called Greenwells). I admit that, last November, when I heard that the shop was getting new owners and a new name that I was apprehensive -- what else was going to change? Thankfully, the new owners (Tom and Teri, who are incredibly friendly and quick with a joke) kept everything that was already perfect with this coffee shop (now called Cedarhurst Cafe), and improved everything else that needed work. My favourite thing about Cedarhurst is the ambience. This shop is like a little oasis from the stressful bustle of downtown New Haven. From the central tree pillar to the yoga balls to the wood tables, the cafe has a very natural, very hipster-chic feeling about it. The rotating featured artwork helps to keep the interior fresh, too. Although I don't really have time to do it as much as I used to anymore, I still love to sit on the yoga balls for a morning coffee and laptop session whenever I can. There's always plenty of seating (which is shocking, considering how wonderful this place is), with lots of outlets and free wi-fi. The coffee here is some of the best I've had in New Haven, and now I try to make a detour and swing by the shop at least once or twice a week to pick up some of their light roast coffee to go in the mornings, even though the cafe is no longer on my morning route to work. The smoothies are also really good and made fresh on-the-spot; I like the Tropic Thunder best. As for the things that Tom and Teri improved: my chief complaint when the shop was called Greenwell's was their lacking food menu. Tom and Teri not only addressed this problem, but their solution actually has become another highlight for the cafe: this shop has some of the best muffins I've ever had! The muffins are baked fresh on the premises most mornings, and they are AMAZING (particularly when you can smell them baking from the sidewalk). I can recommend the cranberry, the carrot, the blueberry and the chocolate chip muffins. The chocolate chip cookies are also really great, particularly when they come straight out of the oven! The egg, cheese and prosciutto sandwich is another highlight, although you should prepare yourself for a bit of a wait (~10 minutes or so) if you order it, since I think they make it from scratch in the kitchen. In conclusion, Cedarhurst is still my favourite coffee shop in New Haven. Definitely worth checking out. read more

I discovered this charming cafe yesterday and fell in love with the ambiance, the people (Tom and Teri plus the rest of the staff are super friendly and helpful), the *smoothies*, the *chai latte* and the wonderful breakfast sandwiches (try the avocado, egg, red pepper flakes Toast!). Oh my God - the bread is good! If you want a charming, friendly, healthy, yummy experience at a cafe, Cedarhurst is it. I've been living in San Fran this year -- the capital of Cafe experiences and Cedarhurst in New Haven is my all-time favorite. Such a great little cafe! Their coffee is well-priced and they have a great food selection which varies from grilled cheese sandwiches to smoothies to yogurt and fruit to muffins). I'm partial to the egg sandwich with veggies - super delicious for less than $5! The space is very pleasant, bright, not too loud, and clean. I came on a week day afternoon and it was quite quiet but was bustling and busy on a Sunday morning. AMAZING!!! My only regret is that I didn't have time to eat here more than once and try more menu items. I had the Egg Sandwich on an eight grain toasted bread with Veggies. It was unique and yummy! I also had the Dark Chocolate PB latte. I would love to try the Spicy Vanilla next time. The owners were super nice. The customer service was excellent. Cedarhurst is the best coffee shop in New Haven, hands down. Their breakfast sandwiches are always hot, fresh, and delicious (I recommend the bacon, egg, and cheese on a bagel). I really enjoy the iced lattes there, but the nitro iced coffee is also good. The owners are extremely nice and want to make sure that you have a wonderful experience every time you eat at Cedarhurst. This is definitely my go-to breakfast spot. Popped in for some lunch while on a trip. The food was lovely and the service even better. They made my British family feel very welcome.

The cappuccino I had here was just what I needed after a hurried and hectic day in New York. I got back to New Haven, took a deep breath and looked for a new place to try. The atmosphere was quiet (a few students, soft music etc.) and the place was clean and inviting. The front of the space is a large glass window overlooking the street where there seems to be plenty of parking. The cappuccino was rich and hot and well put together. Often I need to add some sugar or cinnamon to a subpar cappuccino to help get it down. This one required no such assistance. The small and the medium sizes both have two shots so you can decide from there how much foam/ milk you want while still getting a nice kick. The "chillness" of the atmosphere was a little too much after a while and I'm glad I ordered my drink to go. I felt a little bit like a drunk who's wandered into a library. But that's fine. People need to study, and in New Haven you have almost no choice but to tailor your business to the tastes and proclivities of the local students. There are a lot of nice cafés in the area, this one shouldn't be overlooked. read more
