Customer service is top notch here. I've been here a few times and this is what keeps me coming back. It's exactly how it sounds - a neighborhood cafe. It's not fancy, no frills with the cutlery and paper plates, but has exactly what you need in terms of food and a great place to just chill and eat without a lot of hoopla. The first time I came here to check this place out was with a friend to catch up. We wanted a mix of sweet and salty and the waitress was able to help us pick out some breakfast and lunch options to accommodate. The next time we came with family from NYC. Mind you my cousins have 5 children ranging from ages 1.5 to 13. Their menu is extensive. They were able to get everyone's orders in a timely manner and were patient with all desires from the kids - the cinnamon roll pancakes were a hit This most recent experience was my husband's lunch meeting. He wanted fries with his sandwich. Since they don't make fries, the owner suggested he get his fries someplace else and eat them at THEIR restaurant. How kind - No one does that these days! Not only was that supporting another business (without fear of business loss), but that's how much they wanted to ensure his happiness. It seems small, but it's not. Lastly, he ordered the supreme veggie sandwich. He said it was tasty (it looked delicious). They didn't have honey mustard sauce so they offered to mix honey with their mustard. Starting this off by saying this was my first time here, and this is my first ever yelp review. I have never decided that a place was so bad I needed to review it until today. I got the simplest sandwich known to mankind - it was a chicken cutlet sandwhich, with lettuce tomato and onion. I genuinely do not know how you mess it up - but they found a way. Let's start with the chicken "cutlet". When you order a chicken cutlet, you'd think it would be an actually breaded chicken cutlet, not a frozen chicken patty that tastes like it's from the dollar store. Next, the tomato was cut so weird I genuinely do not get why they did that. It was in weirdly large and odd shaped pieces... a tomato is a circle, just cut it in a circle!! It would actually fit on the sandwhich! Besides this, the onion was diced and so just completely fell off the sandwhich when I picked it up. My girlfriend got a chicken parm sandwhich. Just as bad. Chicken cutlet was the exact same thing, a flavorless frozen piece of chicken fresh from the freezer isle at dollar tree. The roll also tasted like it was from dollar tree, and the tomato sauce tasted as if they poured a can of tomato paste in a pan and watered it down to look like a sauce. In all, the best thing we got from the place was our bags of chips and sodas - the only two things they didn't make. This place has the aesthetic and the look of a cute fun establishment, and the food of an underfunded elementary school cafeteria. read more

So glad to see this place back, as they make a really good pancake, which I can't do at home no matter how I try. And it's such a cute little Vermont-cabin of a restaurant! Hot food is prepared from scratch, and they seem to get a ton of phone orders, so yeah, if you haven't phoned ahead, expect to hang out for a bit. It's intended as a place to relax, have a cup of coffee, have the sandwich you don't want to buy ingredients for, feel less pathetic about all the time you spend at home with your head in a book, etc. Everyone is super-nice, and there is both a fireplace and a patio, depending on the weather and your mood. I'm going 4 stars instead of 5 partly so people will read and adjust their expectations. This is not a cuisine experiment where the chef is out gathering ramps (I enjoy those places, too!), nor is it a deli where they hurl breakfast sandwiches at the slavering crowd at high speed (I also enjoy those). This new cafe in New Haven is EXACTLY what the neighborhood needed. First of all, it looks like a log cabin, complete with a massive, cozy, working fireplace. The owner is kind and welcoming. Their prices are also really reasonable compared to the surrounding options (Coffee Peddler, ERC, even Romeo's). It's the perfect place to come and get work done by myself, and my boyfriend and I like to stop in when we're running errands to warm up. read more

A quick search brought us here and I'm happy we came here! It was much more spacious and cleaner, and I appreciated the seat-yourself and ordering at the register system. It was much faster. Although the cinnamon roll pancake isn't quite as thinner and flatter and aesthetic as Pantry's (nor does it have the cool sugar swirl), it was still fluffy and delicious, and all the prices are comparable anyway. Three people were working behind the counter and not a single one had a mask on despite New Haven still having a mandate. They kept repeating my order back to me with errors and then acting like I was the one who said it wrong. It was a bizarre experience, as my order was small and very straight forward. At one point, one of the women working there just started staring at me, perhaps because I had a mask on? I wanted this place to be good. It should be packed all the time. But I've given it multiple tries and have been disappointed each time. My most recent experience was the worst. I popped in at 11am hoping to grab a quick breakfast sandwich and coffee to go. About half the tables were occupied, so it wasn't overwhelmingly busy. When the person in front of me ordered a breakfast burrito, she was told that it would be a 10-15 minute wait because there were two families that just ordered (not sure why that would cause a holdup, I feel like dealing with families should be typical of a Sunday morning). Despite knowing there could be a 15 minute wait, I ordered a breakfast burrito anyway. I also ordered a coffee. They were out of regular coffee. I don't know how that happens at a breakfast place. I then waited for 40 minutes for one breakfast burrito. 40 minutes. My girlfriend called me ask if I was still alive. I have seen places 3 times as busy and never waited more than 10 minutes for a breakfast sandwich. I don't know if they don't have the right equipment, if it's disorganized, or something else but it's absurd to wait that long for two eggs wrapped in a tortilla. Other times I've gone there always seems to be something. It's never easy. I always have to ask them to top off the coffee because they leave two inches of space for fix ins (not a big deal but it's the same even when I say "just a tiny bit of room for cream"). Happens every time. I've also had the owner taken my order while she was on a personal call. She continued her call while I ordered. Didn't even stop to say "good morning" or "what can I get you". When I got home, the order was wrong. You always feel like you're in the way there- like you're inconveniencing them. I was hoping that it was just growing pains. Hopefully they get themselves organized, it could be a great addition to state street. read more
