Literally THE BEST BREAKFAST PLACE ANYWHERE! I'm giving 5 stars, which I only reserve when everything is phenomenal. Today was my 4th time coming here and it did not disappoint. We tried to get in yesterday but it was super crowded and we didn't want to wait amongst a lot of people (too much sickness going around). However, I wish we had gone, because our breakfast wasn't anywhere as good as today. I started with a Carmel latte which was really good. I had the croissant French toast which was utterly amazing! I have to say that I am NOT a breakfast person. I'm not a fan of eggs, but I will eat them and I hate to start the day with a sugar bomb! However, the croissant French toast was a true delight. It came topped with fresh, not frozen sugary stuff, beautiful juicy strawberries, a nice light whipped cream, and a not so sugary chocolate sauce on the side. It did have a lot of whipped cream so I loved that to the side. It was served with syrup but I didn't use any. The flavor of the croissant with the strawberries was enough for me. I barely dipped it in the chocolate. It was delectable! I've also had their Irish Benny on another trip which was amazing and the pumpkin pancakes. There is NO other breakfast place where I cannot make a decision because there are so many delicious items to choose from. And, I know that anything I choose is going to be utterly amazing. Their portions are big and their prices are very fair for what your get. I felt like I had a whole pint of strawberries on my croissant. My husband had the meat lovers omelet with oatmeal. He said everything was perfect. The staff is very friendly and very attentive. This is a typical breakfast place. It's not fancy but friendly and clean. And everyone seems happy! The kind of place I like. You have to get here early or you'll have a wait. I say the wait is well worth it. We went at 8:30 on a holiday and were able to be seated immediately. That's the first time that's happened though. I want to try their lunch, but their breakfast is so amazing, I would probably order breakfast for lunch which is something I NEVER do! Great portion sizes and food was very good. I was visiting the area with my parents and they both said they would return to this restaurant if they were ever back in the area. French toast or pancakes (rather than normal toast) were available as part of the standard egg breakfast that my mom always gets, and she loved the French toast which came as huge slices. Latte was also good, many specialty flavors available on though not explicitly stated on the menu and you have to ask the waitress. Small covered waiting area is available. This appeared to be a pretty popular restaurant, and the waiting area was not large enough for all the waiting parties at some times. read more

A great spot for excellent service and very good food! Parking is a little tight but don't let that discourage you. We had a few minute wait but not a problem! I love coming here and finding a seat at the counter. Forewarning, they always have amazing specials and it's always difficult to decide what to order because everything sounds delicious! When best friend, Hopalong Casualty, and I get together, it's usually memorable. Such was the case on this day. He Amtraked up from NYC; I drove down from Windsor Locks. We arrived at SSC during breakfast, and luckily snagged the last open table. Michelle greeted us and kept us well caffeinated. Eclectic menu. Hopalong opted for a short stack of banana nut pancakes (w/o nuts, haha). I had the Mighty Green omelet with a side of grits. My omelet contained spinach, avocado, asparagus and broccoli, and was perfectly prepared. For me, the star of the show was (were?) the grits. Smoothest I ever inhaled. This place is so freaking good! I'm a little bit obsessed with it. Every time I have been there, it is very crowded. Give yourself time to wait to be seated. Or just grab seats at the counter, there is usually room and that's first come first serve. The well done home fries from this place are literally heaven sent!. I was not a fan of my scrambled eggs because I like my scrambles lumpy. These were more like an omelette with no bits in the middle. The cinnamon roll pancake was out of this world! I know what you're thinking - "she's out of her mind, who gives 5 stars to a freaking diner!?!? " Fair. This is emphatically NOT a 5-stars upscale dining experience. What it is, though, is a terrific place for a very good lunch, seemingly to this food-snobby New Yorker in the middle of nowhere! We rented a car to head up to VT and NH for some hiking and R&R, needed lunch en route. Found this on yelp, thank you, not far off the highway. First surprise was people calmly chatting out in a little vestibule while waiting for a table. Went in expecting to be told there's a wait, but they do first-come first-served at the counter, so we happily took counter seats. Second surprise was how many vegetarian options there were, along with the obligatory burgers, pork roll, etc. Hubs ordered the tuna melt, small up charge for the sweet potato fries. I ordered the "veggielicious melt (or was it the veggie melt-a- licious?)" - whichever, it was fantastic, beyond expectations. And Brianna, our waitress, was just the BEST. I chose the coleslaw side, and we shared the sides. I must say my veggie melt, on black olive toasted bread, was messy, but Brianna kept me supplied with napkins. So good, with some balsamic dressing, ample amount of vegetables, just fun and delicious. Brianna pointed out to me that I could get the same filling atop a salad, so the next time we need lunch and we're in that area, I'm willing to even go a little out of the way to eat at State St Café! read more

We didn't even get the chance to try the food because our party was completely skipped. We called an hour before arriving to add our name to the waitlist since they don't take reservations. We checked in at 9:00 AM, but noticed several parties who arrived after us were seated before we were. When we followed up with the host, we were told that our name had somehow been crossed off the list. Only one staff member was managing the seating and crossing off names, and apparently our name was marked off without ever being called. We were the only non-white couple waiting at the time, which made the situation feel racist more than unprofessional. The only solution offered was to put our name back on the list and move us up a few spots, which didn't feel like an adequate response given the circumstances. It doesn't appear that a lot of State Street's assets and resources were dedicated to the dining room interior, which is basic and looks much older than its true age of just 20 years. You'll see counter stools by the coffee station, a few tables up front and in the back, and lots and lots of booths and benches throughout. When my brother and I arrived yesterday, a small table for two was the very last available table for our 10:30 brunch. And that table gave us a clear view into the kitchen, where State Street seems to allocate their assets because we saw five cooks working like demon machines cranking out plate after plate of classic diner comfort food for that jam packed diner. They're open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week, and although their two-sided menu has a lunch side and a breakfast side, our friendly server Michelle told us you can order anything at any time! The menu is a true work of art, with as many breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, Benedicts, omelets, French toast, waffle, pancake, salads, hot and cold sandwiches, melts, wraps, and burgers as you'll ever see. There're some cool items here -ever seen a pastrami egg and cheese sandwich? How about M&M Pancakes? The omelet section is pretty creative -with Loaded Potato (Potato, Bacon, Scallions, & Sour Cream), Spinach, Avocado, Broccoli and Asparagus, and "Big Mac" Options. Our meal was an order of chocolate chip pancakes ($10.59) and a Chef Salad ($14.99). Coffee was $1.99. My brother's pancakes were two enormous thick pancakes with plenty of chocolate chips and a layer of optional sprinkled sugar. He made a valiant try at finishing it but got around 2/3 done before he threw in his fork. My Chef Salad was incredible! A gigantic bowl with Oven Roasted Turkey, Ham, American Cheese, Swiss Cheese & Sliced Hard-Boiled Egg over Mixed Greens, Tomato & Cucumber slices. I couldn't even eat half of it, took the rest home so my wife and I could split the leftovers for dinner. Three servings for $14.99! We loved our experience at the State Street Diner. PRO TIP When we left the diner at 11:30, the dining room was still packed and there were ten customers waiting in the lobby for their table. No wait at 9am was amazing, and a good parking spot was also found (parking can get tight at this little eatery) I had a raspberry passion iced tea that was excellent. I also had a pancake special of carrot cake sweet potato pancakes they were phenomenal! The hubs had cinnamon roll pancakes which he loved, and we both opted to up charge and get real maple syrup. Breakfast at State Street Cafe was an absolute terrific choice! I had been here once before about 10 years ago and the quality of the food was just as good as I remembered. It's located right off state street and parking was easy and convenient. The place is on the smaller side so get there early or be prepared for a wait. But I promise it'll be worth the wait! The cafe offers a traditional and special's menu with a large variety of options. The specials menu did not list prices, but when the bill came it reflected reasonable costs for breakfast entrees. I ordered the breakfast tacos which included 3 flour tortillas each loaded with egg, cheese, steak, pico de gallo, and avocado served with salsa and a side of home fries. The food was delicious, and portions were generous. I ended up having leftovers to enjoy the next morning. We ordered:    *   2 passion fruit unsweetened iced teas    *   1 coffee    *   1 hibiscus unsweetened iced tea    *   1 smoked salmon benedict with waffle fries (subbed for loaded turkey bacon) For this basic breakfast, our bill came to $49.85 before tip. Nearly $50 for one - with no alcohol, no appetizers, and nothing fancy. Just tea, coffee, and one main dish. which is outrageous. While the server was polite, the food was mediocre at best - definitely not worth these prices. The smoked salmon benedict was average, and the portion didn't justify the cost. I've had better quality and larger servings for half the price at local diners. There's nothing about this place that warrants such inflated prices. This afternoon was a complete disgusting experience. Asking for 2 plain grilled hot dogs to be told we don't sell hot dogs but there's a special on the menu with hot dogs only to be told I don't make the rules ..2 min later we can make the hot dogs plain. I ordered a plain grilled chicken wrap with lettuce tomato and cheese Upon arrival the chicken has a Mexican salantro lime seasoning that is beyond overwhelming. The chicken was dry and FRIES over salted. When I ask if this could be addressed I was told that's how it is . When I ordered it I said I wanted it plain ..well everything gets seasoned with that here is what I was told. Upon speaking with the owner because the manager stated they would expect me to pay for everything regardless. I SPOKE W OWNER WHO informed me that people are trying to just get free meals when they order things different than how they are on the menu and she doesn't tolerate that. I have absolutely no problem with paying for a quality meal period. This food was inedible and the photos will show the oily fries covered w seasoning as though the lid was broken. Back again for a second time on our way home from New York. Had the same lovely waitress! Place is just as nice as the last time we thought a few weeks ago, is good, and service is exceptional. This is our new go to on the way home lunch spot. Kids get delicious milkshakes, the oatmeal is Cold, chocolate chip pancakes are excellent for my other two, and the sandwiches are a home run for me, the mama. I still prefer sandwiches with a lot less sauce and dressing and keep forgetting to ask for it on the side. That is my own personal preference, but very good sandwich I had today. The WTF sandwich with a steak sandwich with tomatoes, onions, lettuce, garlic aïoli, and garlic french fries. We came here with a group of six on a Saturday, and there was a bit of a crowd, but the wait wasn't too bad (10-15 min). From the table, the feedback was positive for the pancakes, sandwiches, and breakfast burrito. The chicken & waffles portion size was huge, but overall execution was a bit lacking (over-breaded chicken, under-spiced sriracha syrup). Was looking for a new brunch place without the wait of Bella's, particularly one that offered pancakes ( my favorite food). As the self-proclaimed best pancakes in the state, SSC did not disappoint. My blueberry pancakes were filled with fresh berries, fluffy, huge, and perfectly sweet thanks to the powdered sugar topping. We also got the Cinco de Mayo chorizo eggs benedict special which was good, not great, and a little odd because they were stingy with giving us packets of hot sauce. I do also have to dock a point because of the lack of price transparency for the specials menu since we were surprised to see the $20 charge for the eggs (which seemed a bit high given the portion of meat). We did go Sunday around 1PM which seemed like a peak post-church brunch time but while the waiting room was full when we walked in, we had to wait a reasonable 20 minutes (much better than the hour-plus wait at Bella's).
