The first appointment was canceled the day before. Things happen so I rescheduled for another day. During the initial appointment Dr. Rahman was dismissive when I addressed my concerns regarding ADHD treatment and options. She questioned the competence on my therapist and insisted that I was depressed even though I explicitly expressed that I was not. I had no feelings of depression or anxiety. She offered Wellbutrin and I declined. After a long drive to the Evanston Clarity Clinic location for a face to face appointment she reluctantly prescribed me 10mg of Vyvanse. After a week on the medication and doubling the dosage after a few days as she instructed, I had a follow up appointment were I explained how I hadn't noticed any change or experienced any of the previously mentioned side effects. At this time she responded "well maybe you don't have ADHD", and insisted again that I was suffering from depression or anxiety. She did not listen to me at all and showed a lack of consideration for what I was experiencing. I felt like this was a form of discrimination. I decided to see another psychiatric provider who gave me a formal evaluation that confirmed my original diagnosis. I have noticed a significant positive change since receiving proper medication management. It is unfortunate that Dr. Rahman made a diagnosis based on her personal biases without evaluating me herself or even adjusting medication.

On top of that, when all the staff in the child/adolescent program quit, they forced a new therapist from the adult program (who had no clinical experience working with kids) to take charge with little to no training. Some would say these decisions fall below ethical standards and are not in the best interest of the patients. You deserve better. If you are looking for an IOP or PHP program in the area, there are several other options.

Frustrated with being stuck waiting in little rooms for hours on end, my son was easily agitated. Rather than allowing me to intervene as he escalated (they insisted I "disengage") they allowed him to pick up objects which he then either threw or held up in defense mode, leading them to give up on him - obviously he was set up for failure. They also allowed him to run around hallways and ESCAPE from their secured area, leading to a 30-minute hunt for a 9-year-old boy throughout stairwells that lead outside near a very busy street. During discharge, they suggested a more aggressive medication for the sake of "calming" him, and suggested places out of state to send him to. Then they had the gall to charge me hundreds of dollars for THEIR negligent treatment of my son, and our family's further life disruption by keeping him kicked out of school. Fast forward to a year later, and we found a great local school for our son - a therapeutic day school that is designed for autistic kids. Thanks to a school that knows what they're doing, our son is thriving there, and he very obviously did not need to be institutionalized or over-medicated. Rogers... how dare you give up on a boy who needed help, suggesting that he needs higher-level institutionalization and more aggressive medication, and setting him up to have had his schooling delayed. DO NOT SEEK HELP FROM ROGERS BEHAVIORAL.

The next step was returning their call to set up an initial visit, which in that initial visit with Kaori, I got a great feel of what its like at 'Above and Beyond' during peak hours, plus I was introduced to several of their support programs (S.M.A.R.T Recovery, REBT - Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Art Therapy, etc.), and met several of their volunteers and staff. I felt overwhelmed, but excited at the same time because 'Above and Beyond' was so welcoming compared to the others that didn't even consider returning my call. Since that initial visit, I have dropped in at 'Above and Beyond' on a few occasions and even ended up moving closer to the East Garfield Park area, which was another huge plus because I put them as a high priority as my internship site. I highly recommend 'Above and Beyond if you are a client, volunteer, intern, or anyone looking for work because its facility is filled with diverse welcoming counselors and volunteers that keep its programs flowing.
