Sure you have the typos, occasional grammatical errors, and in-town backscratching going on, but sometimes the paper gets a really good scoop and the editors care very much about fostering new talent and generally keep a very open mind for stories. The newstalk section can be pretty funny sometimes and also gives you a good feel for the soul of old-time Somerville. I guess some people might call the paper more "conservative" than The Somerville Journal. Whatever. In my opinion, it's just more INTERESTING and you get the sense that the powers that be at the paper are invested in infusing it with some personality. Sure they've been through some missteps in the past, but I think they recognize the responsibility that comes with running a paper and are up for the challenge. Here's hoping that this independent paper stays the course and has many more years in business.

I see Spare Change News hawkers all over the city, every day…read more Recently, I picked one up and read it. *gasp!* I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the paper has some pretty interesting articles that are often better-written than some of those in big media newspapers. I didn't see any articles that pleaded and begged for money or anything. There was a great article on the New Bedford immigrant raid. Some interesting profiles and interviews. A friend said they read an interview with Noam Chomsky in one issue. This is a paper I'll probably be looking to keep up with.

The last couple of days, I've been stuck in the apartment all day so when I popped out for coffee, I bought a paper at the 7-Eleven. Obviously, much of it is slanted towards Massachusetts happenings and it seems to go a leeeetle bit liberal towards the current occupant of the White House. Other than that, the news is good and you can't beat the coverage of the Boston sports teams.

Beware of the Globe $1 offer. They are now offering $1 for 26 weeks for the digital subscription…read more But at the end of that "gift" subscription they start charging $27.72 a month. No notification that the subscription is ending. It's in their contract to bill for continuation. The supervisor Alan was not very helpful for a credit other than to offer a continuation rate, This Boston Globe issue has been reported numerous times in YELP. I have been a home paper subscriber for over 30 years and 4 years digital subscriber but they are losing subscribers with this bait and switch practice. The value is not there, so beware.
